The "Make It/Take It" Rule was put into place to encourage teams to
utilize their women. Amber, I realize that you may be confident in
your own abilities to play ultimate as a female; however, ultimate is
a team sport. Unless there is an incentive to throw to a female, the
majority of new players just do not do it, regardless of how good
that female may be. I've played in leagues in both Columbia and
Atlanta, and it doesn't take a genius to understand this. Seeing as
this is a new players league, I would really like to push the
involvement of women so that they'll keep coming out.
Additionally, one of the side goals of this league is to promote the
growth of ultimate within the female community at USC. As of right
now, the Men's Club Team has enough to field 2-3 teams. The Women's
Club Team has yet to reach that point. I do not see the harm in
instituting a rule that will promote the utilization of female
players in a fall league--particularly new female players--so long as
it helps develop the ultimate community at USC.
Finally, if you look at other co-recreational sports that are
intramural at Carolina, you will find that the rules cater to women
(4-pointers in basketball for one example) not because they are in
some way inferior but because female participation in athletics is
not nearly as booming as male participation and it helps promote
female involvement.
To put it another way, why would a female want to come back out for
ultimate if her team fails to get her involved? It would be great if
rosters had a 1-to-1 male-to-female ratio, but they don't. We will
be playing with more men on the field than women, and the "Make
It/Take It" rule helps get that minority of women involved.
If you have any other problems with the rules, you can e-mail me
personally.
