I wonder if Carlos is regretting his decision NOT to play Davis Cup?
Spain is down 0-2 after the first day!! They didn't even put Nadal in
the singles! Can't believe Feli Lopez lost to Karol Beck! :-(
Let's hope Nadal & Costa win the doubles today ...
If Spain loses, it will be a repeat of when they won in 2000, then
went out first up in 2001 ... as did Australia in 2003 - they beat
Spain in the final , and lost to Sweden first up in 2004! (on home
ground too!)
Moya's girlfriend, Flavia Pennetta, has won the women's title in
Acapulco. She beat Ludmila Cervanova (Slovakia) in 3 sets: 3-6, 7-5,
6-3. That should make Carlos happy! :)
Rafael Nadal is the Mexican Open Champion - he beat Montanes is 2
easy sets, 6-1, 6-0!!
And Moya's girlfriend, Flavia Pennetta, is in the women's final in
Acapulco ... doing better than Carlos I'm afraid! (I wonder if he's
giving her a few tips??)
NADAL BREEZES PAST MONTANES TO WIN MEXICAN OPEN February 26, 2005
ACAPULCO, Mexico (AP) -- Rafael Nadal mixed blistering groundstrokes
with a soft touch around the net to sweep past fellow Spaniard Albert
Montanes, 6-1, 6-0, and win the Mexican Open on Saturday.
The 18-year-old lefty was aggressive from the start, keeping Montanes
off-balance by alternating between power and soft pushes that just
floated over the net and landed loaded with top spin.
Montanes looked intimidated early and tired from then on. He double-
faulted in the first set's second game to let Nadal break his serve.
Montanes, 24, went on to take just 14 points the entire first set,
and two of those came on four straight double-faults by Nadal, who
also had two aces in the early going.
The second set was merely a formality for Nadal, who won all five of
his matches in this Pacific Coast resort city without losing a set.
It was the second tournament victory in as many weeks for Nadal, who
won the Brazilian Open on Feb. 19.
The championship for Acapulco's WTA tournament will pit top-seeded
Flavia Pennetta against Slovakian Ludmila Cervanova on Sunday.
It's the second consecutive Mexican Open championship game for
Pennetta, who got there by breezing past fellow Italian Antonella
Serra Zanetti, 6-2, 6-1 on Saturday. Cervanova upset fifth-seeded
Madagascan Dally Randriantefy 2-6, 7-5, 6-1 in the semifinals.
Pennetta fell in last year's final to Iveta Benesova of the Czech
Republic. This year she's made a better start, winning in Bogota last
weekend for her second career title.
She overpowered Serra Zanetti in 68 minutes, and showed no sign of
leg problems that slowed her in Friday's quarterfinal victory over
Lilia Osterloh.
''I was more concentrated and making fewer mistakes than yesterday
and the game started off very well,'' Pennetta said.

Andy Roddick and Carlos Moya have added their names to an all-star

the Indian Wells Masters. Other participants include Roger Federer,
Marat Safin, Tim Henman, Guillermo Coria, Gaston Gaudio and David
Nalbandian.
"It's not surprising that Andy and Carlos have joined the line-up as
they both have demonstrated over the past several years a strong
commitment to charity work," said ATP chief executive officer Mark
Miles.
"Andy, through the Andy Roddick Foundation, has done amazing work for
children and others in need while Moya's decision to provide UNICEF
with his entire prize money winner's check from Chennai after
capturing the tournament title there on January 9th was an
inspiration to many of his fellow players. It's great to have them
both on board."
A portion of proceeds from ticket sales will go to charity.
The format of the exhibition will include a combination of singles
and doubles matches, including a Super-Tiebreak played between
Federer and Safin.

Nadal is playing Puerta right now. (Puerta is the guy who beat Carlos)
Scores are 5-4 to Rafael, who came back from 1-3 down in the 1st set.
Now it appears to be going on serve.
Let's hope Rafa beats him (and gets revenge for Carlos, dehhrr).
VAMOS RAFA! Kick down the "Door"!!
Oh no, just as I thought ... *sniff* The door closed on Carlos ...
aaarrggh!! He just can't seem to handle Puerta ...
Final score: 6-4, 3-6, 4-6.
Someone on the Men's tennis forums said: 'it was a very close match,
Carlos could have won it but he didn't take his chances and Mariano
was good enough to break Carlos's serve once at the last 2 sets, that
was enough'.
I wasn't over-confident of Carlos winning the tourny again, but I was
hoping for (at least) a Moya/Nadal semi ... Very disappointed ...
adios ...

This is not looking good ... Moya lost the second set, 3-6, and is
down 2-4 in the third ... he has been broken again. I have a bad
feeling about this match... the "door" is going to close on you
again, Carlos - FIGHT BACK! NOW!
I think I will have to leave ... :(

Carlos has won the first set, 6-4. But it seems he has dropped his
serve in the second ... scores are 0-3!! Fight back, Carlos - you
have to take revenge on this man!
Moya opens strong in Mexican Open February 23, 2005
ACAPULCO, Mexico (AP) -- Defending champion and top seed Carlos Moya
of Spain defeated Nicolas Lapentti of Ecuador, 6-4, 7-6 (4) Tuesday
in the first round of the Mexican Open. No. 2 Argentine Gaston
Gaudio withdrew with an injury after splitting two sets with Tomas
Zib of the Czech Republic. Gaudio took the first set 6-2, but lost
the second 7-5 before withdrawing. Eighth-seeded Rafael Nadal of
Spain defeated Alex Calatrava 6-4, 6-4. The 18-year-old Nadal used a
dominant service game on the clay court to defeat his countryman.
Carlos Moya snapped a four-game head-to-head losing streak against
Nicolas Lapentti.
"I played well today specially at the end of the match," Moya said.
"I really served well in the tiebreak. Finally I managed to beat
Nicolas. He is one of my best friends and I am happy for him to see
he is playing much better now. I wish him all the best of luck."
[Carlos, as usual, speaks well of his opponent. I didn't realise that
he had NEVER beaten Nico before ...]

YAY! Carlos won, 6-4, 7-6. It took him a tie-break second set, but he
did it! Now go beat the "Door" (Puerta), don't bash your head against
him ... and keep going on. Gaudio is out, there's only Rafa to worry
about. Adelante!

more game to go ... aaargh, no ... 5-5 now ...
Venga Carlos!! Win this in 2 sets!

Carlos is the No. 1 seed for the Acapulco tourny ... he has to play
Nico Lapentti first up (can you believe Lapentti has been reduced to
a qualifier?), then the 'Door', Mariano Puerta again if he wins!
Puerta has already beaten Garcia-Lopez, who would've been another
worry for Carlos...
And even if Moya gets through to the semis, it's quite possible he
could meet Rafael Nadal there ... and Rafa is hot off winning in
Brazil ....
[VAMOS CARLOS ... and stay focused - you are the defending Champion,
you need to do well here!]
Puerta (the guy who beat Carlos) got to the final, and Gaudio beat
Nadal and got to the final. But Puerta's luck ran out in the final -
Gaudio won the title by beating Puerta, 6-4, 6-4.
Here are a couple of quotes after the Moya/Puerta match. Note that
Carlos himself admits that he didn't play well:
1. "Puerta's powerful baseline drives wore down Moya, who played
badly and made more unforced errors."
2. "He deserved to win. The match was very easy for him," Moya
said. "His style of play didn't surprise me, but what did surprise me
was how badly I played."

Carlos Moya defeated Peter Luczak, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5). Bueno, but he
should've closed out that second set at 7-5. Next opponent is Juan
Monaco.
[Also Nadal beat Calleri. Muy bien. :-)]

Carlos plays today against Peter Luczak, an Aussie ranked around 170
in the world. Moya should win in straight sets, but we better not
take this too lightly ... it is an afternoon match, after J.I. Chela

Yes, Carlos is supposed to play Bs. As., Argentina 2 weeks before
Acapulco. I think I was mixing that tournament up with Brazil, which
he's not playing - it's between the other 2 tournaments. He probably
wants to rest in between Argentina and Acapulco.

Congratulations to Marat! He played a beautiful match to beat Hewitt
after starting the match pretty badly. His shots were amazing and
his resolve became evident from the 2nd set on. I'm so glad he
finally won in his third AO final. And I'm happy he beat that
annoying, nasty Lleyton Hewitt. I'll bet every player on the tour
was rooting for Marat. Hewitt has few friends in the locker room.
Marat is so much more likable. And he especially deserved to win
after beating the "unbeatable" Roger.
Carlos is probably quite pleased that his friend, Marat, won as well.
