I found an online article by Carlos about Rafa's upcoming No. 1
ranking:
MOYA POINTS WITH PRIDE TO MALLORCAN TENNIS POWER
Wed, 30 Jul 2008
Cincinnati, Ohio - Carlos Moya can't wait for the big day when he
hopes former protegee Rafael Nadal will take over the number one
ranking from Roger Federer. And the 31-year-old will be bursting with
pride if his compatriot from the island of Mallorca can follow him to
the top of the ATP table.
"When Rafa becomes number one he will totally deserve it," said Moya,
1998 French Open champion who stood at the top of the rankings for a
fortnight in March, 1999. "He's been close for three years.
"But until now but until now, Federer has been playing out of this
world. He's more human now, and Rafa has improved a lot."
Moya took Nadal under his wing in the early days as the talented
teenager made a move onto the tour. But before that, as a ranking
professional, Moya often had hits with the then-14-year-old Nadal, a
decade his junior.
"I can't say that I really helped Rafa so much - maybe a bit when I
was 24 and practising with him. That motivated me, you don't want to
lose to a kid."
And Moya added: "He's helped me to be a better player by his intensity
in training and his desire. He knew he could ask me questions and I
could answer him."
Moya is quick to mention a fact of life in Spanish tennis which
reflects well on his and Nadal's tranquil Mediterranean homeland.
"I don't know what it means, but of the three guys who have been
Number 1 from Spain, two are from Mallorca."
