Well, Carlos couldn't do it! He lost to James Blake in the final, but
he was certainly not disgraced. He fought hard especially in the
second set, but must have been exhausted in the end.
Final score was 6-3, 5-7, 6-1.
Report from Medibank International site:
SYDNEY, 13 January 2007: James Blake has become only the third
different player and the fourth overall in the Open-era to win the
MEDIBANK INTERNATIONAL in consecutive years. The third seeded
American joined Pete Sampras and Lleyton Hewitt, who has done it
twice, with that achievement.
In a stunning final Blake scored a 6-3, 5-7, 6-1 victory over Carlos
Moya who was playing his third final here and for the third time was
denied the taste of victory. This was their ninth meeting and while
Blake has now won the last three matches, Moya still holds a narrow 5-
4 head-to-head advantage over the American.
"That's pretty good company to be honest," said Blake. "It's amazing
when I hear last year being compared to Arthur Ashe and this year to
be compared to Sampras and Hewitt, its staggering to me.
"I still feel like the same kid who is five feet tall and nervous and
self conscious going into high school and worried if I was ever going
to grow and whether I was ever going to stop wearing that back brace
and to think that I am now thought of in any kind of scenario with
those kind of player is crazy for me."
Blake, who gained the benefit of a walkover in the semifinals,
certainly came into the final fresher than Moya. The Spaniard had
worked his heart out from the first round with every match he played
going three sets and in the first two rounds saved a total of six
match points, plus he defeated two seeds en route to the final;
number four Marcos Baghdatis and number six Richard Gasquet.
Blake got off to a quick start when he broke serve for 3-1. He had a
set point at 5-2 but Moya saved his service game, but it was
prolonging things as Blake whipped a superb forehand winner on his
third set point to get the advantage.
He struck again in the first game of the second set and broke for 1-0
and then again for 3-0. The games were running away from Moya, who
appeared weary as Blake went up 4-0. But Moya managed to stop the run
when he got a bit of a second wind and reeled off three consecutive
games.
The eighth game produced breathtaking rallies which resulted in the
capacity crowd giving the players a standing ovation. Blake served
for the match at 5-4 but incredibly Moya broke back and the crowd
went ballistic. His spirits were lifted as he came back to level the
final. But at the start of the third set Blake steadied himself and
broke to lead 2-0.
Moya managed to pick up two games in the set as Blake maintained the
even keel to the finish line and his first title of 2007.
Incredibly Blake and Moya will next meet in the first round of the
Australian Open which starts on 15 January.
"I don't think I have to forget this week, I am feeling great and I
felt good playing again," said 30 year old Moya, who was aiming to be
the oldest champion at this event in the Open-era since John
Alexander in 1982. "He's been playing great tennis but I am proud of
how I played today and this week.
"If I lose playing this way, it doesn't matter. I gave it everything.
Maybe I will lose again to him and if I play like this and lose to
him, then I lost to a great champion."
