Carlos lost to Andrei Pavel in his first round at the Aussie Open, in
5 sets, 4-6, 6-7(5-7), 6-4, 6-3, 4-6.
I see nobody has been reporting about Carlos since I left for
Melbourne tennis ... now I'm back & still no reports! So here's mine:
I was there to suffer with Carlos in person ... so disappointing
after he got back from 2 sets to love down ... he fought very
bravely, but actually lost this match with errors on his own serve at
5-4 in the 5th set!! He has played better in the past, definitely ...
and I think he was still carrying that injury from Sydney.
But I don't think Carlos would have beaten Santoro in the next round,
however. Fabrice has played really well at this tournament and only
lost in the quarters to Nalbandian. The guy who beat Carlos, Andrei
Pavel, got 'wiped' by Santoro in straight sets.
I also watched Carlos play doubles with Zabaleta (they lost), and
then the mixed doubles with his girlfriend, Flavia Pennetta, against
Aussie Wayne Arthurs & Ai Sugiyama. They lost that match too, and
Flavia was beaten in her 3rd round singles. (but she already HAS her
prize, Carlos ! :-))
So I DID see Carlos 3 times, although it would have been great if
he'd won something!! Aaaargrh, can't do anything about it. I am back
from Melbourne now & watching the rest of the Aussie Open on TV.
I am enjoying that Cyprus boy, Marcus Baghdatis ... I see he has
gotten to the final, just like Carlos did in 1997. It's like 'deja
vu' for me ... Carlos was, like Marcos, unseeded, 20 years old, had
beaten top-seeded guys on his way to the final (such as Boris Becker
& Michael Chang), just like what's happening this year. And Carlos
played the favourite in 1997, Pete Sampras, in the final, who beat
him in straight sets. But Carlos became an 'overnight sensation' in
this country then, and I've been following him ever since. Carlos
kept rising, and won the French Open the following year.
We'll soon see if the favourite THIS year, Roger Federer, does the
same to Baghdatis. I will be cheering for Marcos, but I can't get
this 'deja vu' thingy out of my head ... and if Marcos loses, keep an
eye on him next year at Roland Garros ... ;)
I'm still a faithful Moya fan, but I'll follow Rafael and Marcos too
now.
