Hey Cansecoites,

I hope you're ready, because Jose is about to get hot. He only hit four
homers in April (compared to ten last year and eight in 1998), but he's
playing pretty well. In his last two games, Jose is 5 for 9 with a homer,
two RBIs, and 3 runs scored. He's batting a respectable .284 now. May is
full of games against Jose's ex teams, and Jose typically plays well
against them. Jose has hit more homers against the Red Sox (40) than any
other team, even though he played with them for 2 years. Next on the list
is Texas (39) and then Toronto (38). 12 of the Devil Rays next 15 games
are against those teams, and the other three are against the
Yankees. Guess where they fall on Jose's career homer list? That's right,
fourth - Jose has hit 35 bombs against the Stankees...

It's going to be a great month. You heard it here first (you'll hear it
for the second time later in this email if you read to the end).

Get ready...
Mark

JOSE FANSECO
Earlier in Billy-Ball we talked about what it means to be a fan, a BIG fan.
Meet Mark Petrillo. Billy-Ball subscriber and self-described as Jose
Canseco 's #1 fan. Now, quite frankly Billy-Ball thought that the Dade
County Police Force was Jose's #1 fan but it appears that Mr. Petrillo and
his Cansecometer take the cake. His newsletter is filled Canseco insights
such as Jose's all-time favorite movie is Jaws I and his favorite breakfast
cereal is Frosted Flakes. The only thing missing are mugs shots of Jose.
Check out the original Bash Brother at http://www.canseconet.com.

From the Tampa Tribune:

Say, Jose: With a stolen base Thursday, Jose Canseco needs three more
steals to become the eighth major-leaguer to have 400 home runs and 200 steals.

==========
From the LA Times:

...Hill struck out Greg Vaughn, and catcher Molina threw out Martinez
attempting to steal second for a double play. But Hill left a 1-0 fastball
up to Jose Canseco, who belted a 420-foot, two-run homer to left-center,
bringing his career average against Hill to .469 (15 for 32) with four
homers.

==========
From the St. Petersburg Times:

Suddenly, the focus of a season that began with such great expectations has
changed. The talk about a potential playoff run has been replaced by a more
meager, yet still somewhat challenging, goal: of getting back to .500. "You
hate to say that, but yeah," Jose Canseco said. "We need to turn
that around next month and go 15-9. That would be good if we could do that."

...Saturday marked the first time three of the Rays' big four of Vaughn,
Jose Canseco, Fred McGriff and Vinny Castilla homered in the same game....

==========
From the Orange County Register:

...The Devil Rays were the ones shaking their heads. Edding's
interpretation of the strike zone drew occasional glares from Devil Rays
sluggers Greg Vaughn, Jose Canseco and Castilla and one confrontation with
Vaughn.

Bottenfield struck out nine (one short of his career high), getting Vaughn,
Canseco and Castilla on called third strikes a total of four times.

From the Sports Ticker:
Five to Watch: Jeter, Tatis, Cirillo, Canseco, Floyd
May 2, 2000

New Jersey (Ticker) -- Every week, SportsTicker will take a look at five
players to keep an eye on.

Jose Canseco, DH, Tampa Bay Devil Rays
One of baseball's premier sluggers, Canseco has yet to put together one of
his torrid streaks. Tampa Bay has not played well but offense is not really
the problem. The Devil Rays score runs even without Canseco getting hot.
But the Cuban power hitter should have a big week with series against two
of his former teams. Tampa Bay hosts Texas, against whom Canseco hit .359
with with five homers in 39 at-bats last season. The Devil Rays also travel
to Fenway Park in Boston, where Canseco has 46 homers and 134 RBI in 595
at-bats.
