Where are the homers?   Message List

Hey everyone...

Jose's off to a very slow start this year. In 56 at bats, Jose has only
one home run and three RBIs. He was robbed of another homer when it hit
one of the catwalks in the Trop. He seems to be healthy... I guess he just
hasn't gotten hot yet. Hopefully he'll snap out of it soon.

If you'd be interested in purchasing some one of a kind Jose art, check out
http://home.earthlink.net/~zakw/index.html. If you're interested, email
Zak at zakw@.... He's asking for $150, including shipping.

Below you'll find all the latest Jose news...

Take it easy,
Mark

Rays flop at the Trop
Tampa Bay allows three homers, 15 hits and six walks in a drubbing by the
Indians.
By Marc Topkin
April 8, 2000

...Three innings later, Jose Canseco clubbed a monster shot that struck the
B-ring, which is some 150 feet above the field, but that ring (second from
the top) is in play. Canseco was lucky to get a double out of it, but that
didn't stop stadium workers, desperate for something to celebrate, from
briefly setting off the new lights and sound effects....

...The hitters, meanwhile, couldn't do much against Wright. After
back-to-back doubles by Dave Martinez and Canseco in the first, they didn't
get another hit until Canseco struck the catwalk in the fifth. And it
wasn't until the score was 13-1 and former Ray Bobby Witt was mopping up
that they got their fourth hit, a sixth-inning pinch-hit homer by Bubba
Trammell.

"It was a pretty bad night for us all the way around," Canseco said.

==========
From the Tampa Tribune:
Even when things went right for the Rays, they went wrong.

Jose Canseco hit the 16th fair ball off a catwalk in Tropicana Field
history. Unfortunately for the Rays, Canseco's blast hit the ``B'' ring,
which is 150 feet above field level as well as a live ball. The ball
ricocheted off the catwalk and landed in shallow left field for a double.

From the St. Petersburg Times:

SLUGGING FOR CHARITY: Jose Canseco made a $50,000 donation to Tampa's
Hispanic Services Council before Saturday's game. Canseco earned the money
by winning a home run hitting contest in February in Las Vegas.

Who knows how many home runs Jose Canseco has lost to injuries in his
career. Now, Canseco is healthy and he's losing home runs to his own
stadium. Tropicana Field has four catwalks above the field, and they can
play havoc with homers.

When a player hits one of the lower two catwalks, the ball is ruled a home
run because the catwalks are behind the wall. When a player hits one of the
upper two, it's ruled a double because the catwalks are in front of the wall.

There have been 17 players in the last three years to hit catwalks, but
there could be a good number more who do it this year based on the first
four home games.

Canseco, Greg Vaughn and Cleveland's Jim Thome have already hit catwalks.
Thome hit a lower catwalk and the ball was ruled a home run.

Canseco hit one off the second-highest catwalk 150 feet in the air but the
ball was ruled a double. Two nights later Vaughn appeared to hit the same
catwalk as Canseco, but the ball was ruled a homer. Canseco has had two
home runs taken away by Tropicana Field in the last two years, and more are
sure to follow. When the stadium was built, it was said a ball could not
reach any of the catwalks.

From the AP:
Caseco's brother signs
The Newark Bears of the Atlantic League signed Jose Canseco's twin brother,
Ozzie, on Thursday.

Canseco, a 35-year-old first baseman, has a major league career batting
average of .200 with four RBIs in parts of three seasons with the Oakland
Athletics and St. Louis Cardinals.

Canseco played last year for the Mexican League's AAA Tabasco team, hitting
seven home runs and driving in 38 runs in 48 games.

Jose Canseco reaches another milestone

Fourteen years after winning the American League Rookie of the Year Award,
Jose Canseco is still one of baseball's most feared power hitters.
On this day in 1999, Jose Canseco became the 28th player in Major League
history to reach the 400 home-run plateau. He hit a 386-foot shot in the
the third inning of Tampa Bay's 7-6 loss to Toronto. The Havana native
finished 1999 with 431 career home runs, 25th on the all-time list and the
most by any player born outside of the United States.

==========
From the St. Petersburg Times:

FUTURE NO. 2 HITTER: Forget the home runs. Jose Canseco has a future as a
situational hitter.

Canseco, who has one home run, perfectly executed a hit-and-run play in the
first inning, leading to Tampa Bay's first run.

On first base with one out, Dave Martinez broke for second and Canseco
bounced a single through the hole when second baseman Gregg Jefferies went
to cover the bag.

"I've been hitting so terrible, I figured I should just try to get the bat
on the ball and get it through that hole," Canseco said.

"I had to laugh because I could hear the pitcher cursing the whole time I
was running to first."

QUOTE OF THE WEEK: "How do you write a laugh -- Hahahahahahahaha?" -- JOSE
CANSECO, oft-injured DH, on the idea of playing outfield every day in the
National League

==========
From the Tampa Tribune:

...Rays fans should look forward to moving to the NL, and not just because
it will bring new teams to Tropicana Field.

First, it will mean the end of the designated hitter at home games. Yes,
there is a downside as it will spell the end of Jose Canseco's days with
the Rays. A reality that should be met with a heavy heart as the big guy
has performed well and has been a delight to watch. His charisma will be
missed.

The Big Four in Tampa Bay's lineup haven't been half bad. Greg Vaughn and
Jose Canseco have been hitting, while Fred McGriff and Vinny Castilla have
not. Castilla returned to the lineup after missing the first seven games of
the season with a strained muscle near his ribcage. Because of the injury,
his slow start was understandable. Castilla went 0-for-10 before getting
his first hit. Castilla is one of the best fastball hitters in the game,
but can have trouble with breaking balls. Because the injury was to his
midsection, breaking balls could continue to give him trouble for awhile.
McGriff, meanwhile, has had a sore foot, but it is not believed to be
serious enough to affect his hitting.

McGriff has simply been struggling. During the second week of the season,
McGriff had an 0-for-15 stretch where he hit just one ball out of the
infield. After a 3-for-4 performance on Opening Day that included a grand
slam, McGriff's average was .188 after nine games. Vaughn, meanwhile, had
four homers in 10 games, and drove in the winning run with a 12th inning
single on April 13. Canseco hit safely in eight of the first nine games of
the year and had a homer.

From the Detroit News:
Gooden shuts out Tigers
Detroit can't solve team that allowed 94 runs in last 10
By Tom Gage

...Comerica Park, which has yielded home runs in just one of its five
games, has hitters thinking, though. Jose Canseco, for instance: He
actually singled to right in the first inning.

"I don't think I've ever seen him do that before," Manager Phil Garner said.

"He has no business hitting the ball there," catcher Robert Fick said.
"That's not him."...
