Hey Canseco fans...

I'm going on vacation tomorrow and probably won't be near a computer until
sometime next week, so I wanted to send this poll out before I leave:

Jose needs your vote. Follow the link and vote for the Sox to keep Jose
next year. Hopefully Jose will get a lot of votes, which will show that
the Chicago fans want him to stick around.

Sox Notebook
Williams offers hints: Vets aren't his pets
Thursday, August 30, 2001
By Joe Cowley

DETROIT - White Sox general manager Ken Williams spoke with the media
before Wednesday's night's game, the main topic being the changes in store
for his club for 2002.

Judging by Williams' comments, Sox fans can say goodbye to veterans Harold
Baines, Jose Canseco and David Wells.

"Harold and I have talked, and he understands there is no fit for him next
year," Williams said. "He expressed to me that he is not planning to
announce any type of retirement."

Williams said Baines has been offered numerous jobs within the organization
over the past couple of years, but that he declined to accept any of them.

Baines, 42, was hitting just .133 this season before going on the disabled
list in June with an injured right hip flexor. Baines is expected to be
activated Saturday, when major league clubs can expand their rosters to 40
players.

Canseco, meanwhile, has been with the Sox since June 20, when he was signed
as a free agent. Through Tuesday's action, Canseco, 37, was hitting .281
with 12 home runs, providing a power presence in the lineup.

But with Frank Thomas expected to return from his torn right triceps injury
next season and be the Sox's designated hitter, there wouldn't appear to be
room for Canseco, who wants to be an everyday player.

"I've sat down and made 1,000 different lineups," Williams said. "Unless I
get special exception from the commissioner's office, I can't get two or
three DHs in the lineup.

"I don't think you could ever have too much depth. (But) I don't think we
could get him enough at-bats."
