Hey everyone,

I added four new photos of Jose from Spring Training to the Photo
Galleries. Check 'em out.

There hasn't been an abundance of news yet, but so far, it sounds like Jose
is fitting in nicely with the Angels. All the latest news is below...

==========
From the Orange County Register:

...Scioscia said Jose Canseco must be ready to play in the outfield this
season. Canseco got his first chance Tuesday. Garret Anderson was held out
of the intrasquad game because of mild tightness in a groin muscle.

Canseco started in left. In the first inning, he called off shortstop Benji
Gil at the last moment to make a running catch.

"We would've had a shortstop crisis if he didn't call him off," Scioscia
said. "Benji would just be coming to."...

Newcomers Make Good Impressions
By MIKE DIGIOVANNA

TEMPE, Ariz.--After more than a week's worth of bullpen workouts, batting
practice and fielding drills, the Angels got their first taste of
live action Tuesday during a 7 1/2-inning intrasquad game.

New pitcher Ismael Valdes made a good first impression, new designated
hitter Jose Canseco showed he can play a little outfield if needed, and
outfielder Darin Erstad and pitcher Brian Cooper picked up where they left
off in 2000....

...Scioscia was relieved when the 6-foot-4, 242-pound Canseco called off
Gil, the shortstop, in plenty of time to avoid a collision.

"Otherwise," Scioscia said, "we'd be talking about a shortstop crisis right
now."...

From the LA Times:
Always Count on Canseco to Make It Home Safe
By MIKE DIGIOVANNA

TEMPE, Ariz.--You will not find this statistic on Jose Canseco's lengthy
playing record, which includes 446 career home runs, 1,358 runs
batted in, 1,811 hits and 1,140 runs.

But it is worth noting that in 1,811 major league games over 16 seasons,
the 6-foot-4, 242-pound Canseco never has been thrown out at the plate when
trying to score from second base on a hit. "I get real good secondary
leads, good jumps and hope for a lot of bad throws," said Canseco, who in
1988 became the first player to hit 40 homers and steal 40 bases in a season.

"The funny part is I never get held up [by the third-base coach]. I don't
like to go station to station. I don't like to stand there on the
basepaths. I like to make things happen."

Canseco was thrown out from second in a spring-training game last year, but
it was a play on which he blew out his hamstring and calf. He never has had
a collision at home with a catcher.

"They tend to give me the back part of the plate," he said.

Of course, Canseco never had a chance to run into his current manager, Mike
Scioscia, the fearless former Dodger catcher who was famous for blocking
the plate.

"Oh, that would have been a nice impact," he said. "I'm glad he was in the
National League all those years, and I'm glad he's not catching any more."

==========
From the Angels Official Site:
3/3

...Jose Canseco got a warm welcome from 4,404 fans at Phoenix Municipal
Stadium, even though it has been nearly 10 years since his last impact
season (1992) in Oakland; Jose then went 1-for-3, with a first-inning
single....

3/5
...Jose Canseco made his first appearance of the spring wearing a fielder's
glove, and was tentative but mistake-free in left field....

==========
From the LA Times:

...Jose Canseco's right shoulder and lower rib cage were wrapped in ice
after a morning workout, but he said there was no cause for concern. "I'm
just sore," he said. "The first two weeks [of spring training] are the
worst."...
