Subject: Launching a foil on ice?
troy_bezanson@...
Send Email Send Email

I've been out on the ice about 15 times so far this winter both on skiis and my buggy(with blades of course).
I'm having a great time.  Most of the time I'm by myself.  Which leads me to the question...

What tips and tricks do others use to launch their kites when by themselves?

I use a 3.3m foil made by HQ,  I find when the wind is blowing hard, I spend a lot of time trying to get the thing in the air.
This afternoon, I was wearing ski boots so I used my winter boots by sitting each one on the ends of the kite.
Worked great, but my boots were a little cold to put on at the end of the session (3 hours of awesome wind)

A plan to make a tube shaped beanbag.  I think having that stretched out over the trailing edge should solve all my problems.

I'd like to know what the rest of you do.

Good winds to all,
Troy

Hello All...
Just found out I will be off work for the above dates.
The "Intellicast Snow Cover" page says the area East of the Georgian
Bay has around 16 to 24 inches of snow (Is that true??). I was hopin
to find others in that area next week that are interested in Kiting
(Snowboard, skiis, or whatever!). I have a Quadrafoil XXL, an F-One
9m STW,and a Skytiger Hi-30. I also have a Naish 11.5m AR5, and a
Wipika 11m AR3.5 (will those inflatable kites work in the cold??). I
am more than willing to let someone try my kites out (I would also
like to try others too). I am heading up there this Sunday morning.
Any advice from this group would be greatly appreciated!! Please
contact me if you have some of that time free!!
Thanks .....
Ben

This is a message mainly to the traction fliers - there will be another
posting to kite fliers in general.
This saturday Feb.24 is the Puslinch Lake kites on ice festival hosted
by the Wind Climbers Kite Club. It is the Premier Winter Kiting Event in
Ontario - and that's not just because it is the only winter kite
festival.
Puslinch lake is on the east side of Cambridge, 2 minutes off the 401
(just "roughly" 36 1/2 min. from Toronto airport)
The conditions on the lake are perfect for kite skiing right now and the
recent very thin crust of snow still gives enough for snow boarders to
hold an edge.
There are quite a few types of kites represented by local fliers and
many types of kites can be purchased through the 2-3 members
representing the different manufacturers - this would include kites,
buggies etc.
The festival is part of Winterfest on the lake which involves drawing
awareness to the lake and the effort to raise funds to help the dredging
program. The event is free to anyone. A booth for hot chocolate etc is
set up beside the skating rink for kids. There is the Old Marina
restaurant right at the point we access the lake which makes it handy to
go in to get warm, have a drink and bite to eat.
All types of kite fliers and non-kiters are invited to come out for a
day on the lake. There will be single line, stunt and traction kite
fliers out for the day.
The club has reserved the front room by the fireplace between 4-6pm to
hold it's annual post-fly raffle. Tickets will be sold at a cheap price
inside once the items are assembled for the raffle - donations of any
type of item for the raffle are greatly appreciated.
The raffle and group meal inside is usually quite a bit of fun - some of
the donated prizes are listed on the web site along with directions to
the lake.
There will be other prizes and give-aways the day of the festival.

http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/Track/8336/puslinch.html

If the weather is good, people start showing up by 10:00 am, but
officially the festival is from 12:00 - 4:00.
If you want to come out and kite ski with us - please join in.
At this point the event is totally recreational and fun - just show up
and fly - it's the largest winter gathering of fliers in Ontario.
Let's hope there is wind this year, see you there!

I think the key to your message is found in the statement "I got rocked"!
If you get a smaller "trainer" kite it could well be a while (and more
kites) before you are "rocked" again. I just started kiting last summer
with a Skytiger hi30 and for me its those over the top, scary outings that
make it rock. I've learned to respect the power traction kites generate.
It's that fear / respect thing that keeps me coming back. I was out today
kite skiing for the third time and I've got to say there isn't much about
this activity that doesn't rock! Get the big kite. Scare yourself!
anything less would be - boring.

I don't know how "strong" they makes the trainer kites, but it's
probably better to buy a small kitesurf kite as you can also use that in
stormy days or for kiteskiing.

Do you suggest getting a trainer kite to start out with - I have been
reading about the Slingshot trainer...

Hi guys,

I'll be out with Gordon Cook, Stan Woodman and others on Saturday
here in Kingston. Forecast looks really, really good. If anyone wants
to make the trip, we'll be launching out of the Water Filtration
Plant. If the wind is sketchy, we might head to Stan's secret spot on
the island. Give me an e-mail or call if you're interested in coming.

Hello Dima,

how are you?

You see I must tell you that everything will work. From 1.20 to 2.30

But every skis will work better in certain conditions.

When I do Course racing and long distance, I look to have very good upwind
capability and stability.

So the best is : Almost straight sidecut , 2.10 +, Heavy skis with very
sharp edge at 88°.

Sure base preparation is very important.

Actually, I have Salomon , Downhill 2.12 m, with special plate under feet +
Anti-vibration system.
It's the best I have never had. Go upwind crazy and I can relax on it
because the skis take most of the energy.

You are right Ben's and me having used Slightly carve skis last year.
It's new GS skis about 1.90, 1.95 m = to a 2.10 old generation. Technologi.

But carve skis are not the best, have to woork a lot more to go upwind, and
are not stable as straight cut.

Always remember that when we do kiteskiing, we look to go fast and keep
straight line more as we can.

When it's 10-15cm snow deep, then I will use my carved skis , but they are
still very stiff compare to intermediate skis.

Are the old classic stiff competition skis the best choice? YES,YES,YES

and it's cool because we still can find it in ski store for almost nothing
because it's not "fashion" :0)

Take care pure Ice, We do melt our base often in less than 2 hours
practice...

White base are a bit less fast but will last longer.

Have fun.

I forgot to mention it on my previous message.
Sunday I was out with my TRACTIONtm EX'S 1.7 sq/m hihihi :0)

Wind was about 45-70 km/h and surface was perfect ice(after 2mm of icy rain)

To tell you how the wind was strong, sometime I was going 50 km/h cross wind
and I was lifted for a second :0)

2 hours of it and training was done.

Hello Michael's ,

We often test our speed on hard pack snow or ice... and I can insure you
that we easily go at 70-80 km/h.
We know that we break the 100 km/h sometime.

Few years ago, a policeman told me that he took one of the 3 we were on ice
at 134 km/h.

You know when you are going so fast that your 2.10m skis are flaping on the
surface.

What is your equipment?

do you know peoples that will be in Saskatoon for the WISSA 2001?
http://www.conceptair.com/english/ski/ski_eve.htm#1

there we will have a speed cup if conditions permit it, also here next week
with the Kitesurfing Winter Tour, I will keep the list informed

Hi All,

Just wondering if any of you kiteskiers out there have done runs with a
GPS or checked speeds with Radar?

A number of us, here in Calgary were out a couple of weeks ago and did a
few runs with the GPS strapped on us. The runs were approx. 3 km's in
length (out and return) the GPS read average of 35 km/h and a top speed
of 49 km/h. This was earlier on in the day. After that the winds really
picked up and we were having so much fun, shredding up the ice, that we
didn't stop to grab the GPS and get anymore readings.

By my assumption we were going much faster than when we took the
readings. Pretty sure that the top speeds reached 60 km/h or higher.

It would be interesting to see how that compares to other's speeds?

Hey Pascal,

I live in Montreal, and I go kiteskiing(kitesnowboarding, if you
prefer) every weekend when there is wind...We were not so lucky for
the last month and a half though...I am the owner of the group mike
told you about(kitesurf-Quebec), there is not a lot of people yet
because we mostly talk over the phone, but I check my emails daily,
so drop me a line if you come to Montreal(or if you live here). We
are a lot that kiteski near Oka, but we are just a couple to kitesurf
in the summer. If you are open this weekend, I will be in Magog with
the Concept air team sat. and sunday...

My thoughts exactly.

This is a guy that I met on the weekend. He has a line on a used wipika 5.0 and I know it's not the kite for purpose. I just wanted some facts to back up what I've already said.

Thanks,

Bonjour Michel.
yes, I've already visited your new website - priceless!
There's a couple of pictures of you and Benoit in my extreme sports magazine
(of which I'm still the editor) - unfortunately on both pictures you turned
your backs to the camera ;-)
As to the St. Petersburg champs I'm afraid there was no Conceptair within
the first three: the two Conceptair canopies we bought from you in Finland
were present, but not in the hands of the best kiters unfortunately ;-)
Local kites came first: Hornet, Dune and Batwing (you saw that one in
Finland - Benoit even made some nice comments about it).
As to the photos, on Saturday the conditions were horrible as I've said
(-24C and 8-13 m/s) and gloomy - couple of toes and fingers got frozen ;-) -
no photos. And on Sunday we took some pictures but I had to cancel the day
due to lack of wind - good job we completed 3 races the day before. It won't
be difficult to send some over as they were taken with a digital camera.

Meanwhile I'm organising the Russian Open 8-11 March, as coming to Canada
would be way too expensive (I'd have to sell my flat to afford it). I'd
invite those Europeans who don't go to Canada but don't know where to look
for them - is there a place on the Web where I can find any European
kiteskiers?

A couple of words about "the Imandra project". It's a big lake of the
longitudinal orientation which means either south or north wind along it.
Last spring a friend of mine went over there and tried to cover some
distance. He may not be the most experienced kiter, but he's a good skier
and high class alpine climber with balls made of steel which is IMO even
more important. He spent 5 days on the lake (took his tent with him) but
never got anywhere, even though he managed 30 km upwind in 9 (!) hours (he's
quite strong and motivated). So I don't really feel the "project" is
feasible. Don't you have any illusions ;-)
But if you fancy coming to Russia (I remember Benoit was rather reluctant by
the idea) - I'll gladly put you up.

Dima

there is a email group just like this one but called Kitesurf-Quebec. There
are only 4-5 people on it (including me!) but I think they are mostly from
Montreal. Maybe you can give that a try... I am not from Montreal but will
be moving there in May. Maybe we can hook up then.

Hope this help.

Bonjour Michel,
bonjour Benoit!
This is Dima from the Russian team whom you generously gave your priceless
kiting tips during the last World Champs.
I'm proud to report the 2nd St. Petersburg Kiteskiing Open I've just
organised has been a success. In spite of the conditions (temperature -24C,
wind 8-13 m/s) 14 competitors turned up (must have been some 30 but the rest
just chickened out because of the cold). Two TV channels (federal - 150 000
000 viewers and local - 13 000 000 viewers) came to film some of the event.
The organisation was much better than it was during the World Champs in
Finland. Particularly I made the judges by the buoys write down the exact
time a competitor passed the buoy so that even if one judge made a mistake I
would still se the true picture having the documents from all the judges in
front of me. Even the prize cups were much taller than those you were
awarded in Finland ;-)
Slava and Andrei you met in Kajani took the first and third places
respectively. And a 17 year old boy got the second - we started a children's
kiting school (free of charge) at our paragliding club.
Would be very nice to see you guys again but going to the Saskatchewan
Champs is way too expensive for the poor Russians ;-)
How many kiters do you expect to turn up for the World Champs?

He needs a very big wipika........like a 15 (not sure of the
increments).....a 5m Wipika would do for a 150 pounder in 25 mph winds.......

Hi All,

A friend of mine is looking at purchasing a used Wipika 5.0. He's 225lbs
and will be riding a Wakeboard. Just wondering what the windrange will
be? Anyone out there have any insight in this matter? I'd like to relay
all the info to him.
