Stanford Off to Strong Start in Fall Season

Cardinal reaches final of USC Tournament

Nov. 12, 2009

STANFORD, Calif. -

The Stanford men’s volleyball team went 4-1 at the USC Fall Invitational last weekend, its initial competition of the academic year, losing to the host Trojans in the final 21-30, 34-32, 15-12.

“I was very pleased with our matches in the tournament,” Stanford coach John Kosty said. “Everybody played well.

“It was good for the guys to go down there and prove how good we are, each individual. I thought all 15 guys we brought down did that. We were able to get guys some experience, play some other teams and compete on the floor.”

The following are the results from the weekend, with impressions from assistant coach Ken Shibuya.

Friday, Nov 6
Match 1: Stanford vs. CSUN 38-36, 30-16, 15-10
Starters: Kawika (S), Brad Lawson & Jason Palacios (OH), Evan Romero (Opp), Charley Henrikson & Garrett Werner (M), Jordan Inafuku (Libero)
Subs: Erik Shoji (Defensive Specialist), Garrett Dobbs (Opp), Ian Connolly (OH).
Highlights: Lawson 15k, .565; Werner 9k, .667; Romero 8k.
In the fall season debut for both teams, Stanford started off VERY slowly but came back to win the first game in extra points. From that point it was all Stanford as the offense and transition game led by Lawson and Werner dominated the Matadors.

Match 2: Stanford vs. UOP 30-28, 27-30, 16-14
Starters: Evan Barry (S), Ian Connolly & Garret Dobbs (OH), Romero (Opp), Gus Ellis & Max Halvorson (M), Inafuku (Libero).
Subs: Dylan Kordic (OH), Jake Kneller (Opp), Erik Shoji (DS).
Highlights: Romero 7k, .385, Ellis 5k, .667, Kneller 4k, .333, Dobbs 6k.
Against a newly rebuilt Pacific team, Stanford mixed up the lineup and put in sophomore setter Evan Barry to run the show. This group put up a gritty fight and played its best at the end of the first set to win. In the second set, service errors, poor passing, and an inability to slow the Tiger middle attack led to the 27-30 setback. The young group with Kneller inserted at opposite and Kordic at outside turned the tide in the deciding third set. Barry and the offense found a rhythm and fought their way to an exciting final set win showing that Stanford has some great depth in its roster.

Match 3: Stanford vs. USC 30-27, 32-30, 12-15
Starters: Kawika (S), Lawson & Dobbs (OH), Romero (Opp), Ellis & Werner (M), Inafuku (Libero).
Subs: Erik Shoji (DS).
Henrikson & Palacios started the third game in place of Werner & Lawson.
Highlights: Lawson 12k, .588; Ellis 8k, .889; Werner 5k, .833, Romero 9k.
In the feature contest of the day, USC hosted Stanford on the Galen Center Main court directly following the UCLA-USC women's volleyball match. With the women's match going a long five games, the men got off to a late start at 9:45 p.m. A nice crowd of over 1,000 fans was present to watch their first men's game of the year. It was a hotly-contested match between the Card and Trojans with both teams looking very sharp. Stanford led for most of the first set and had to fight from behind in the second set. In the end, the Stanford offense, led by Kawika Shoji, was too much for USC. Lawson led the way with 12 kills while hitting a .588. What was just as important was the play of the two middle blockers as Ellis and Werner combined for 13 kills with both hitting above a blistering .800. The two teams played a third game to 15 despite the already determined outcome of the match with reserves in the game.

Saturday, Nov 7
Match 4: Stanford vs. Long Beach 25-30, 31-29, 15-12
Starters: Barry (S), Kordic & Palacios (OH), Werner & Halvorson (M), Dobbs (Opp), E. Shoji (Libero).
Subs: Inafuku (DS).
Henrikson & Romero started in the third game in place of Halvorson and Dobbs.
Highlights: Werner 10k, .750; Kordic 7k, .667; Palacios 7k, .308; Dobbs 6k.
Against the starters for the Long Beach 49ers, Coach Kosty put in a mixed lineup so that the reserves had a chance to work against a top quality opponent. In the first set, CSULB showed why they will be a contender for the MPSF title by running a fast offense with dynamic hitting from all points of the net. The Card had trouble keeping up and succumbed to Andy Read's team by the score of 25-30. In the second set, Kosty's team regrouped and pulled off a hard-fought 31-29 second set victory behind the dominating performance of Garrett Werner. In that frame, the Card’s improved ball control and tougher serving slowed the 49er's dynamic offense. Outside hitters Jason Palacios and Dylan Kordic caught fire and combined for 14 kills to lead the Card. All of a sudden, it was Long Beach that was not able to keep up, and the young Stanford team pulled off an inspiring three-set victory.

Match 5: Stanford vs. USC 30-21, 32-34, 12-15
Starters: Kawika (S), Lawson & Connolly (OH), Werner & Ellis (M), Dobbs (Opp), Inafuku (Libero).
Subs: Erik Shoji (DS), Kneller (OH), Henrikson (M), Kordic (OH).
Highlights: n/a.
In the "Championship" final, Stanford used its speedy offense to take the first set easily. Lawson was again dominant but was also matched by the contributions of Werner, Ellis, and Connolly. The Card jumped out to a solid lead behind a big service ace run by Kawika Shoji to start the second set. Stanford had a comfortable lead going into the final stretch of the game and started to mix up the lineup. Stanford was still very much in control as it fought its way to match point at 29-25 but USC went on a service run of its own. Some shaky passing led to shaky offense and the Trojans took advantage of hitting errors and dug balls to win in a comeback of 34-32. From there it was a competitive third and deciding set in which USC used the previous game’s momentum to win the match.

Stanford next plays at the Long Beach State Fall Tournament, on Saturday.

Here is Stanford's schedule:

Saturday
Stanford vs. Long Beach State, at West Gym, 8:30 a.m.
Stanford vs. UC San Diego, at East Gym, 10 a.m.
Stanford vs. UC Santa Barbara, at West Gym, 12:30 p.m.
Stanford vs. Cal Baptist, at East Gym, 2 p.m.

Teams involved: Stanford, Long Beach State, Cal Baptist, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara.

No. 7 Stanford Volleyball Downs No. 16 Oregon

Junior Cassidy Lichtman led the team with 16 kills in the win over the Ducks Friday.

Nov. 13, 2009

STANFORD, Calif. -- The No. 7 Stanford women's volleyball team took out No. 16 Oregon, 25-23, 25-16, 25-23, Friday at Maples Pavilion in front of a crowd of 2,712. The Cardinal improve to 17-7 on the season and 10-4 in Pac-10 play, while the Ducks fall to 16-7 overall and 6-7 in conference action.

Junior Cassidy Lichtman led the team with 16 kills, 14 assists and seven digs, picking up her team-leading 17th double-double of the season. Junior Alix Klineman pitched in with her seventh double-double of the season with 14 kills and 10 digs. Junior libero Gabi Ailes finished with 22 digs, while senior Janet Okogbaa went 11-2-16 to hit .562. As a team, Stanford posted a .378 hitting percentage to Oregon's .298.

Neither team was able to establish momentum to start the match as the score was tied eight times before Stanford used a 4-0 run to take a 12-8 lead. Klineman tallied two kills and Cook put down an ace for the Cardinal during that stretch. Trailing by five, Oregon used a 4-0 run of its own to cut the Stanford lead to one at 14-13. The Cardinal would maintain a two-point edge for the remainder of the opening set, earning the 25-23 victory. Klineman led the team with seven kills, while Ailes totaled 10 digs in the first set.

Stanford jumped out to a 5-1 lead to start the second, forcing Oregon head coach Jim Moore to call timeout. Klineman, Lichtman and sophomore Stephanie Browne all picked up kills during the scoring run. The Cardinal would pull ahead, 13-7, as it continued to spread the offense around. A 4-1 run by the Ducks cut the Stanford lead to three at 14-11, but the Cardinal responded as Browne drilled another kill and senior Janet Okogbaa recorded a solo block and a kill. Stanford would cruise to a 25-16 second-set win as seven different Cardinal players registered kills in the set. As a team, Stanford hit .500, while holding Oregon to a .281 clip in the second.

The Cardinal fell behind early to start the third, 7-3, but errors by the Ducks and back-to-back kills by Klineman and a block by Okogbaa and senior Alex Fisher tied it up at seven all. A 3-1 run gave Stanford the lead 10-8 as Fisher and redshirt freshman Jessica Walker each picked up kills. Oregon would not go away without a fight as it came back to take the lead, 16-15, as Sonja Newcombe recorded a kill and an ace for the Ducks. Lichtman tallied her 14th kill to put Stanford back on top, 17-16. Oregon stayed close, tying the set at 23-23. Out of a timeout, Okogbaa drilled two straight kills for the 25-23 third-set win to complete the sweep.

Up next, Stanford continues conference play as it hosts Oregon State, Saturday at 7 p.m. in Maples Pavilion.

High school volleyball playoff preview

http://www.mercurynews.com/sports/ci_13759065

The
playoff brackets for Central Coast Section girls volleyball have been
released — and Division II features the toughest field again, with the
top four teams in the Mercury News Top 15.
Archbishop Mitty is ranked No. 1, followed by St. Francis, Presentation and Palo
Alto.

Mitty
(33-0) is the favorite to win its 17th section title and seventh in a
row. The Monarchs are ranked No. 1 in the country by ESPNRise.com
and are defined by their balance and star power. Setter Joan Caloiaro
has an array of weapons, including Stanford-bound senior Rachel
Williams and Kristina Graven (Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo) as hitters. The
Monarchs' defense is also one of the best in the nation behind Ryan
Shaffer, Kaitlyn Connolly and junior Ronni Lewis. Mitty was tested by
the country's top teams at the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions
and the Durango Classic in Las Vegas. It is aiming for its eighth
state title.
"Some may think we maxed out in Santa Barbara,"
Mitty coach Bret Almazan-Cezar said. "But as a team everyone keeps
improving individually. We've got high expectations."

Palo Alto
(33-3) earned the No. 2 seed after reeling off a 31-match win streak.
The Vikings won their fourth consecutive De Anza Division crown with a
12-0 record. The Vikings are led by senior outside hitter Marissa
Florant but have a stable of standout young players, including
sophomore setter Kimberly Whitson and sophomore
middle blocker Melanie Wade.
"Everyone
is healthy, and we've been getting better and stronger in the second
half of the season," Palo Alto Coach Dave Winn said.

Presentation
(31-7) is seeded third. The Panthers have a young squad, with just four
seniors, and feature a balanced offensive attack. Junior Sarah Cole
leads the team in kills, averaging 2.5 per game. Emily Sklar (2.3 kills
per game), Sarah Blach (2.0 kills per game) and Katy Tagart (2.0 kills
per game) round out a diverse group of hitters for setters Veronica
Bither and Brigette Hoffman. The Panthers beat St. Francis in two of
three meetings this year but lost to the Lancers 3-0 last week in the
WCAL semifinals.

St. Francis is the No. 4 seed but should not be
discounted. The Lancers have a formidable squad, led by dynamic hitters
Jordan Shaw (Saint Mary's) and Shaina Olsen. St. Francis has been hot
lately, knocking off Presentation last week before losing to Mitty in
three games in the WCAL final.
In the Division III playoffs,
Aptos earned the No. 1 seed, with Saratoga (21-10) seeded second and
Valley Christian (27-8) third.

Saratoga had a big win against
Mountain View last week behind Nicole Gragnola, who had 29 kills and 23
digs. Hanna Nielson and Chelsea Sabella are also key components for the
Falcons, who tied for third in the tough De Anza Division.

Valley
Christian is led by senior Rachel Alvey, who is a top setter and
hitter. MacKenzie Beveridge leads the defense, and Megan McKinley is
another big hitter for the Warriors

"Big Henry" mesmerized masses in '60s and '70s

A beach icon, Henry Bergman won nearly half of the tournaments he entered.

Henry Bergman, a physical phenomenon known to dominate Santa Barbara beaches before the likes of Karch Kiraly and Todd Rogers, will be remembered by friends and admirers later this month. At 65 years old, Bergman passed away Oct. 5, ending the life of a legend.

Bergman stood out as a star in the volleyball world during a playing career spanning 1965-1973. An icon in the era before the sport offered professional competition (the first commercially sponsored beach tournament occurred in 1974), he never attained the fame and fortune athletes of similar skill have since come to know. Although Bergman’s career winnings total $0, he belongs in the top echelon of the all-time greats.

Known for booming hits that petrified opponents, “Big Henry” won 15 of the 33 “Open” tournaments he entered. Also known as “Mr. Automatic,” Bergman was just that in 1970, when he won six of his seven events. Bergman won seven titles apiece with Larry Rundle and Ron Von Hagen. He also won with Ron Lang.

Of the 18 events he didn’t win, Bergman finished second eight times. He never failed to finish in the top five of a tournament.

Rundle and many other contemporaries from Santa Barbara High School, the beach, and all walks of life will gather to share memories on Saturday, Nov. 21. The memorial service will take place at 1:30 p.m. at Café del Sol, located at 30 Los Patos Way in Santa Barbara. Everyone is invited to attend.
