John Hager, longtime Cajon Speedway crew chief and crewman, passed
away Tuesday, May 22 at Kaiser Hospital due to complications from
diabetes.

John started working on cars at the track back in the 1970's. Over
the years he assisted Bobby Guest, Benny Carver, Tex Kimbrell, Lanny
Pemberton, Ed Hale, and Gary Tamborelli among others. He was crew
chief for Tamborelli during his three Cajon late model sportsman
championship seasons in 1997, 1998, and 1999 as well as the
championships Tamborelli won in super late models at Orange Show
Speedway in San Bernardino in 2001 and 2002.

John always had a smile on his face when he was at the track.

John will receive his checkered flag at the clubhouse at the Bradley
Park West condominium complex (363 Compton Street, El Cajon, CA
92020) at noon on Saturday June 2, 2007.

John, who was 54, is survived by his wife Barbara, who ran the pit
tower at the track for almost as many years as John worked on stock
cars, and his daughter Julie.

Condolences and memories of John can be posted here or sent to
Barbara Hager at bjhager@....

On the same day (June 1st) that John Hager's photo obituary appeared
in the San Diego Union-Tribune obituaries, also was Dennis
Heffernan's.
Dennis raced my car at Cajon Speedway in the 80's and was also
involved in working on several other cars there. He was just 45 years
old. Dennis suffered a heart attack while doing some work over at his
parents, Ken and Dorothys, house in Lemon Grove. The Guest Book for
Dennis can be viewed at www.SignOnSanDiego.com
He was a very funny guy and will be greatly missed as will John Hager.

Lauri and I moved to Phoenix last year and are trying to get the one
remaining cars put together so we can race at either Canyon Speedway or
Manzanita Speedway here in Phoenix. It's great to have two race tracks
locally to race at one on Friday, the other on Saturday. Joey
Summerhays has moved to Dallas and bought a SIMMS Modified which he is
racing at Cow Town Speedway. We surely do miss all of the friends we
made at Cajon Speedway, Irwindale Speedway, Route 66, and Barona
Speedway.

If anyone wants to drop a line my e-mail address is lopinelee@...

Also, I know probably most of you out there have heard of
classmates.com. I recently sent them a suggestion about adding a Race
Track section to their website like they did for Military Service and
Employers so that us racers who had our tracks shut down can locate and
keep in touch with each other using one site rather then several forum
based sites. If anyone seconds that idea maybe a suggestion to
www.classmates.com would make it happen.

Ron was at Orange Show on the 6th ,i beleive, qualified the car and could not
go ,Also if you watched the Super Late Race this evening the #2 Mike Hagerman
car that Ron normally races came in 38th, driven by Cole Whitt. The Race was
part of the Toyota Nascar Show Down, Ron Esau got caught up in a crash damaging
the front clip.

Speaking of Cajon Speedway alumni, David Beat missed the race having been caught
up in a practice crash, but that probably meant nothing to David. It is my
understanding that David is donating a kidney to a friend in this off season,
but is sure to be back next season. Most of us know that David is an awesome
guy, outside of racing. It was great that Speed Channel talked a bit about what
we all already knew. God Bless David!

For those of you who remember Gary "Jesus loves you" Jenkins, some
bad news:

EX-INSURANCE AGENT SENT TO PRISON IN FRAUD CASE

UNION-TRIBUNE

7:01 a.m. February 8, 2008

EAST COUNTY COURTS: A former El Cajon insurance agent has been
sentenced to two years in prison for defrauding an elderly couple,
who have since died, of nearly $300,000.

Gary Michael Jenkins, 59, also was ordered by El Cajon Superior Court
Judge William J. McGrath to repay more than $291,000 to the estate of
William and Dolores Marleau.
"It was everything they had in the world," McGrath said at a Jan. 16
hearing.

Jenkins was convicted in December of theft from an elder dependent,
grand theft of personal property and forgery.

Deputy District Attorney Victor Barr said in court that in 1994, the
Marleau couple chose Jenkins to manage their finances and turned over
nearly $300,000 to him to invest.

During the next nearly 10 years, Jenkins took the money for his own
use rather than investing it as promised, Barr said. When Jenkins'
actions were discovered by a member of the couple's family, Jenkins
forged documents in a cover-up to show the money had been lost in bad
investments, Barr said.

"At the end of their lives, they had nothing," Barr said.

Jenkins said he was "truly sorry" for what he did to the Marleaus.

"They trusted me to watch over their assets. I let them down,"
Jenkins said.

I was curious if the Cajon Speedway site has been developed yet? Last
time I saw it, it was a big field.

Have to wonder how much business some of the fast food places lost
since the speedway closed. We used to see lot of Subway bags in the
stands and pits, so I suspect there must have been some business
losses since the track closed.

The last time I went by, which was last week, it was still a big pile of weeds.
Nothing at all has been done to it as the Airport has run out of funds to do
anything at all with it. And several of the businesses have moved or closed. In
and Out will allows be there and Subway is still in it's spot. Grandstand Pizza
I think moved. BUt they now have a Starbucks over there and a Weinerstizal... It
sucks they took away our only asphalt racetrack for some weeds.

Hard to understand why they made such an effort to tear everything
down when it appears there was no concrete deal in place with the
airport. At least, if the track, motocross track, driving range, and
soccer field were still there, they may have found promoters to bring
in some income.

My guess is the racing haters just wanted their little victory.

I still find it hard to believe that they could not have let the track

start until late 2010.

As is the case for almost everything, politics had everything to do
with closing the track. Let's face it, how many times the Union
Tribune cover a race? How many times did ANY local elected
officials grace the fans with their presence? Six years of income
versus six years of no income, great decision San Diego. Now I know
why the local economies are all in the red…

Ivan "Doc" Harrison passed away on February 9, 2009.

There will be a celebration of his life at the Coronado Playhouse at
noon on Saturday April 18th.

"Doc" and his beautiful, super friendly wife Ro, were two of the
mainstays at Cajon Speedway during that last two decades of Cajon
Speedway. They got introduced to auto racing by George Behlman during
the mid 1980's. Doc's first race was a factory stock enduro. Doc then
joined the bomber stock division and went on to become the track
champion in that class in 1996. He then moved up to the street stocks
where he competed until the track closed following the 2004 season.

Doc and Ro fielded a car every night their division competed for the
last 18 years that Cajon operated. That matched the feat turned by
Mark Norris during the super stock years.

In a way it was appropriate that Cajon closed following the 2004
season. That way both Mark and Doc remained unmatched in this amazing
string of not missing a race.

Two of my personal memories about Doc stand out from all the rest
from this wonderful guy. He was the only man at Cajon Speedway who
ever kissed me. And the second was his and Ro's story about the day
Ro came home from work and found Doc tearing down a wall in his house
so he had a shop to work on his car inside his house!!!!

Doc was a native of England. He and Ro became United States citizens
in a ceremony many years ago at the starting line at Cajon Speedway.

Doc, we will miss you. Ro, we will always love you.

Bob, thanks for the email. I had heard that Doc passed earlier in the week.
What a shame. Another great racer and person added to the track in the
sky. If you have an address for the location that would be great. Take care
and stay strong, hope all is well for you.

Thanks,

The Playhouse is located at the north end of the City of Coronado
Community Center, 1835 Strand Way, Coronado.

This just one block south of the Hotel del Coronado.

From San Diego, take the Coronado Bay Bridge.
Turn left on Orange Ave.
Follow Orange Ave through Coronado and go 1 block past the Hotel del
Coronado.
Orange Ave becomes Strand Blvd.
Watch for the Coronado Recreation Center on your left.
Turn left at the traffic light on Strand Way which parallels Strand
Blvd.

Robert - tis a shame that about the only time we Cajonians communicate
is when we lose someone or when we run into someone at Irwindale, OSS,
or Vegas. I know many people moved up the hill to Barona. But I'm
having too much fun playing golf and doing the occasional "Near Live"
for Racing West. Hope to see you at some track soon.

I just received word that Earle Brucker passed away early Saturday morning

his passing was a blessing. Thoughts and prayers go out to the Brucker family.

Earle Brucker Jr., the longtime promoter and owner of Cajon Speedway, passed
away peacefully early Saturday morning. He was 83 years old.

Earle's dad obtained a 50 year lease on the land that was to become Cajon
Speedway back in the 1950's. The plan was to develop a spring training facility
for the Detroit Tigers. Those plans never came to fruition.

Instead a facility for high school football and a motorcycle track was built. In
1961 San Diego's Balboa Stadium was closing down. The elder Brucker was
approached by El Cajon business and racecar owner Tom Jackman about putting in a
¼ mile track. Cajon Speedway opened on July 15, 1961.
Earle Brucker Jr. was the mainstay at the track during the first 25 years that
Cajon Speedway operated. In the late 1980's he turned the day to day operation
of the track over to his son's Steve and Kevin.

Even after Steve and Kevin took over day to day operations, Earle Brucker Jr.
was still there. He regularly came down to the track and walked around the
speedway for exercise. During these walks he would pick up any debris he found.
It was his track and he wanted it perfect.

I had the pleasure of being associated with Cajon Speedway and the Brucker
family for some 40 years. I always found Earle fair but firm. There were times I
wrote things I probably should not have written. Earle always let me know in his
own way when I crossed the line. But the Brucker family, headed by their
patriarch, was always extremely loyal to the racers, employees, and fans of
Cajon Speedway.

Services will be held, but will be private.

Rest in Peace, Earle and God Bless your family.

In 1961 San Diego's Balboa Stadium was closing down. The elder Brucker was
approached by El Cajon business and racecar owner Tom Jackman about putting in a
¼ mile track. Cajon Speedway opened on July 15, 1961.

My best to the Brucker family for their loss.
And thank you Bob. You and Tom McGrath really know how to say things.
It seems that the only time there is any communication here it has do to with
someone death.

Marty Wells, who was the Cajon Speedway track photographer for about ten years
during the 1970's and 1980's, passed away yesterday in El Cajon after a lengthy
illness.

Marty was the sister of long time Cajon stalwart Mark Norris, who drove super
stocks, late model sportsman, and Grand American modifieds at the 3/8 mile paved
oval. Her dad was Warren Norris, who assisted his son's racing career and was a
board member and president of the El Cajon Stock Car Racing Assn.

Marty is also survived by her husband Bill and daughter Stacie, who worked
alongside her mom taking pictures at Cajon for several years.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Wells and Norris families.
