Anyone up for a cold, early morning paddle this weekend?
I'm planning to debark from North Beach at 5:15-5:30 am Sunday morning.
Misery loves company, eh?
Bring your own kayak, wetsuit, and lights. We'll have the whole lake to
ourselves.
Call me so I can keep an eye out for you. Not that there'll be any other
idiots out there J

3.5 Days, 300 Miles,
103% Pure West Virginia Adventure
The recent competitor newsletter revealed that the epic proportions of the
upcoming 18th edition of the FIX will likely be compared to those of past Beast
of the East race courses.
***Registration closes next Monday, March 30th. Join us & Experience Adventure!
(Register @ https://www.raceit.com/Register/?event=195)***
The full course offering of almost 300 miles will serve up 80,000' of elevation
over the 3 and ˝ days - a significant sampling of southern West Virginia's most
rugged, beautiful terrain. Course designer Joy Marr and race director Ronny
Angell are working hard to see that racers are richly rewarded for their efforts
by showcasing the best the area has to offer.
Multiple trekking marathons will be juxtaposed with paddling legs covering over
50 miles of West Virginia water. Some careful preparation will be merited as the
letter also revealed that racers will be navigating Class I-III rapids with
their bikes strapped into the 16' canoes. It's unlikely the recently removed
riverboarding sections will be missed as racers soak in the full vista during
their 200' foot rappel. Fair warning was given about an 80+ mile mountain biking
leg that will encompass 21,000' of elevation gain and loss - and most certainly
breathtaking views and fast descents.
Need an endorphin fix to kick off your adventure racing season? Odyssey can and
will deliver.
From the FIX athletes themselves:
"I am still not sure if you, guys, are still on my Christmas cards list, but I
am really grateful for the experience. It was TRULY OUTSTANDING." - Alexandra,
FIX08
" I cannot say how much our team enjoyed the course, great scenery, pain and
sense of accomplishment. This was a true adventure race and the extended day was
a great addition." - Bryce, FIX08

Renee,
Any of your adventurous souls interested in racing LBL Challenge in 2 weeks?
Fees, travel, meals, hotel are all paid by sponsor. We leave Friday morning
(April 3rd) am & return Sunday night (April 5th). All they need is a mountain
bike. We can hook them up with everything else if needed. We are doing the race
just for fun, sun, and a bit of exercise.

Hello everybody! Long time no talk to most of you. I am living in the Bay
Area of San Francisco these days, working as a Sales Rep with Adventure
Medical Kits. If you ever find yourself visiting the Bay, shoot me an email
and we can go for a run, ride, paddle, etc. I wanted to pass this
opportunity on to those people I know that are the 'real' users of outdoor
gear. If you have the time, participate; if not, hit the trails! Feel free
to forward on to your contacts as well. THANKS!

some SWAG as a thank you for your help)? YES? Then read on... *

Joel
Greetings Racers,
CAARA has once again partnered with Lake Shore Athletic Club
to offer an Adventure Racing climbing clinic. It is taught by an
instructor who knows the needs of Adventure Racers
and has a great way of explaining the basics as well
as more advanced techniques. Lake Shore is located
at 211 N. Stetson in downtown Chicago and has one of
the best walls in the area (see below). Feel free
to join as a refresher or learn from scratch. The clinic is being offered
for $30 (paid to Lake Shore Athletic Club when you arrive). See details below:
   * Saturday March 14th-10:00am-1:00pm.
   * Also come at 9am for a discussion of AR, what the sport is, local races
and how to get started.
   * Items covered at the clinic: climbing safety, rappelling with
a prussik backup, repelling with a
pack (bring your own), ascending demonstration and much more.
   * Please bring a harness if you have one. If not, we should have extra or
you can borrow and you will gain the knowledge to go out and select an
appropriate AR harness for your next race.
   * Sign up by March 9th.
   * Please try to be prompt to gain the most from the clinic.
   * Space is limited, so sign up soon.Â
   * Please send me an email if you’re interested or with questions. And

Gold Rush Adventure Races wants everyone to know that the Gold Rush Mother Lode
four day expedition adventure race has no intention of pulling the plug on our
event. Gold Rush Adventure Races provides top notch "Grass Roots" adventure
racing. We are not dependent on cash sponsors to make our event a reality.
While other promoters are canceling their expeditions, the Gold Rush Mother Lode
is going strong. You can put the Gold Rush Mother Lode on your event calendar
for November 4-8, 2009, and be confident that we'll have a great event laid out
for you when you get here.
Gold Rush Mother Lode had some new partners this year. We are very excited
about Drymax socks. This is not another wicking fabric sock. Drymax is the
next quantum leap in sock technology. Drymax Socks feature two different fiber
technologies interwoven in a dual layer system. The inner layer is water
repelling and instantly transports the moisture to the outer layer to
evaporate. I recently used these socks on a mountain biking trip that involved
quite a bit of pushing my bike through the snow. As I pushed snow fell into my
well ventilated mountain bike shoes. My feet never got wet or cold, it was
amazing and I am convinced that Drymax is the ultimate sock for adventure
racing. The Drymax website has a really cool video demonstrating how Drymax
socks work. Check them out at drymaxsports.com, or buy yourself a pair at
zombierunner.com.
We are also receiving support from Royal Robbins, manufacturer of clothing for
outdoor enthusiasts. I frequently wear Royal Robbins shorts for racing or when
I'm out scouting trails for Gold Rush Adventure Races. They are extremely
durable and it's always great to have pockets for easy access to food and gear.
Take a look at the Royal Robbins on-line catalog at royalrobbins.com.
Zombie Runner.com is returning as a sponsor. They have a great selection of
shoes for AR, tasty coffee, and a wide selection of hard to find foot care
products.

Hi Deb,
I moved here about a year and a half ago and I love to mountain bike but I
haven't been since i moved here. Do you know of any good single track trails
around Chicago? I just got a car so I can drive somewhere to find some too.
Thanks!

Is anyone planning a bike ride (MTB, CX or road) in the Chi area this weekend?
Looking to get in 3 hours on Saturday or Sunday and don't know the area well
enough. I will be in the NW suburbs (Wheeling) but am willing to drive somewhere
worthwhile.
If there are no rides, I would appreciate any input as to where I could get this
bike time in while in the area this weekend.
Thanks for any help!

So wondering what and where people are training in the greater Chicagoland
area, especially on the west side (I55 corridor / Plainfield area). Anyone
have any good singletrack they trail run or mountain bike on? How about
paddling, orienteering, etc...
Anyone looking for an occasional training partner for runs, etc?
Thanks
Chris

You can take the Metra to Palos on the Southwest Service line (SWS) or the
Heritage Corridor (HC). It takes less than an hour from Union Station. I
don't think either runs on the weekend however.

Deb,
Wheeling is right by the Des Plaines river which has a trail that runs along
side. It's pretty flat and not very exciting, but you can really bag some miles
on it. There's also Deer Grove which is about 15 minutes from there
(http://cambr.org/SMF/index.php?action=home). I'm pretty sure you have to go
out of bounds for the good stuff there though. Like Niel said below, Palos is
definitely the best single track in the area and it's about 30 minutes from
Wheeling. You can also check the CAMBR site (http://cambr.org) for current
trail conditions and maps... this time of year, if it's not frozen, it's
probably not ridable. Also, as Jason said, Kettle Moraine (southern unit, not
Frozen Otter norther unit) has great single track but will also likely be closed
due to conditions. The cool thing about Kettle is if the trails are closed
(call first 262-594-6202), there are fantastic road rides to be had there. A
local bike shop has a bunch of routes
pre-mapped for you too (www.backyardbikes.com/). Only problem is that's gonna
set you back over an hour drive each way. Let me know what you decide, Heather
and I might want to join you... we're up in Mundelein.

Jason,
I've never taken public to Palos. I would assume it could take most of a
day to commute there and back. Try calling public transit info

The only decent single track in the area is located in Palos.
How to Get There.
Pulaski Woods Grove #2
From I-55, exit at LaGrange Road (Route 45) south. After a mile, turn right
onto Archer Ave and go south for about 3 miles. Past the cemetery, turn left
on 95th Street (east). Go past the next stop sign, then take the next right
onto Wolf Road. The MTB Staging Area is in Pulaski Woods #2, which is the
third grove on your left.
From I-294, exit at 95th St. Go west about six miles to Wolf Road. It is
between Flavin Road and Archer Ave. Turn left and head to the third grove on
your left.
Swallow Cliffs
From Interstate 55 exit LaGrange Road (Route 45). Go south on LaGrange Road
for 6 miles. Look for a large steel framed bridge that crosses the Cal-Sag
Channel. The next Intersection is Route 83, exit on 83 west (don't cross
back over LaGrange Road).
Park at the Swallow Cliffs toboggan run parking lot, which is less than 500
yards from the intersection.

Thanks

Hi Deb,
I moved here about a year and a half ago and I love to mountain bike but I
haven't been since i moved here. Do you know of any good single track trails
around Chicago? I just got a car so I can drive somewhere to find some too.
Thanks!

Hi Jeremy! Is thee any way to put the max adventure training on the calendar?
We are really trying to bring more beginner women into the sport. Any help you
can give would be great!
Thank you Renee

To Chris and others -
CAARA is working on the details of the event calendar for this year. We
have the basics up on the CAARA website www.chicagoadventureracing.org
Check it out, there may be some cool events in your area.
Highlights include:
March - Ropes Clinic
April - IL C2C, High Profile Adventure camp
May - Fat Otter Adventure Camp, Nav & Foot Care Clinic, Whitewater paddling
June - All-Nighter (yeah baby!)
And more to come after that.
All best,
Jeremy

So wondering what and where people are training in the greater Chicagoland
area, especially on the west side (I55 corridor / Plainfield area). Anyone
have any good singletrack they trail run or mountain bike on? How about
paddling, orienteering, etc...
Anyone looking for an occasional training partner for runs, etc?
Thanks
Chris
