I would definitely look into the Chicago Area Runner's Association (CARA)
training program. They have SEVERAL training groups that run in various
locations in Chicago AND the suburbs. The training program is a bit pricy,
but well worth it for fully supported training runs... time-paced running
groups all following the same training mileage program... and ESPECIALLY for
access to the CARA tent on the day of the event (so you have a place to put
your stuff, don't have to wait in lines for the porta-johns, and can get
massages without the massive lines). I've already done the program (and
usually run with the Lake Zurich Alpine Runner group), but I'm probably
going to sign up myself just to get access to the tent. Check out their
website for more info:

We are located in northern Illinois and may even have an opportunity

The dates for our 2-day clinic have changed to June 15-16. We have
also reduced the cost to $195. The clinic will be held at Devil's
Lake Wisconsin, which is known as one of the most scenic areas in the
Midwest. The course is intended for beginner to intermediate racers
who are interested in learning or sharpening the skills necessary to
compete in any adventure race, from a 6 hour sprint all the way up to
a multi-day expedition race. The course will cover the basics of
navigation, roped progression, kayaking/canoeing and adventure race
strategy. The course will be taught by expereinced racers who have
competed in many of the world's top expedition races. Cost of the
camp is $195/person and includes 2 nights camping, boats, PFD's,
paddles, great food, expert instruction and a good time for all. The
course will culminate with a 4 hour mini adventure race, where the
skills learned the previous day will be applied. For details contact

I am 18 years old but have experience in rock climbing, mountian biking, hiking
and navigation. Though I am young I am full of energy and am a machine with a
pack on. I have no experience in adventure racing but I am looking to gain
that. I have stamina, endurance, a great "never quit" attitude, and have no
problem pushing to and breaking through my barriers. I will make a great
addition to any team if given the chance. I am only 18 but what I lack in age I
make up for in desire.

Columbus, Ohio, USA – Expedition Ohio, North America's richest
adventure stage race, announced the participation of Ian Adamson as
the lead Race Advisor and the addition of Team GoLite/Eco-Internet to
the entry list. Join us as the world's best adventure racing teams
set out to conquer a course that proves to be intensely challenging
yet picturesque.
Mr. Adamson will be providing his expert knowledge on a consulting
basis to ensure that Expedition Ohio is a world-class adventure race
in its inaugural year. Participants can expect a race that satisfies
the appetites of the best adventure athletes on the planet. The
unique aspect of Expedition Ohio's stage racing is what fueled Mr.
Adamson's involvement.
Participants have the opportunity to race along side Ian Adamson's
Team GoLite/Eco-Internet (possible team members: Mike Kloser, Danelle
Ballangee, Michael Tobin, Robert Nagle, and Sara Balantyne) and other
world-class teams from around the globe. Now is your chance to race
with the elite teams as they try to tame the remote and hilly terrain
of central and southern Ohio.
The start location for this inaugural event will be Columbus, Ohio.
Teams will travel south to land that has been untouched and unscathed
by the glaciers. Making use of twisting park trails, participants
will pass through deep ravines and dense woodlands. Towering cliffs,
waterfalls, spectacular gorges, and caves will greet the athletes in
areas referred to as the foothills of the Appalachian mountains.
These rugged ridgetops and wooded valleys support a host of natural
wonders. Whoever said Ohio is flat is in for a rude awakening!
The Expedition Ohio Adventure Stage Race will take place August 29 –
September 1, 2002.
The world's top adventure racers have confirmed their participation
in Expedition Ohio, which race organizers have promised will be the
dawn of a new era in stage racing. It features $50,000 in prize
money, a rough-and-rugged course through central and southern Ohio,
and excellent athlete service.
A true test of human courage and endurance, Expedition Ohio will
feature teams of four (coed, all male, or all female) racing 12-18
hours-a-day for 4 days across a challenging 240 mile course requiring
mountain biking, orienteering, paddling, fixed ropes (rappelling,
ascending), trail running, horse ride and stride, day/night
navigation, and inline skating.
To officially complete the race, teams must finish with all members
together, with the winning team taking home the lucrative first prize
of up to $22,000. Additional cash prizes will be awarded for all
teams winning a stage. Any team that has a member who is unable to
finish for any reason will be disqualified. Teamwork combined with
the unpredictability of nature is what makes this event so compelling
for racers, sponsors, and the growing worldwide audience for
adventure racing.
The exact details of the Expedition Ohio course have not been
disclosed and will remain secret until the pre-race briefing, to be
held the day before competitors line up at the starting line. Only 50
teams will be allowed to race this year, so sign up your team now
before there is a waiting list.
Expedition Ohio and its advisory board are made up of athletes and
expedition race enthusiasts, including Ian Adamson, Shannon Kurek,

Hey everybody
Again we beg you to sign up with our e-group at Yahoo! Groups :
caaralist. Our current method of communication via e-mail at AOL is
very unreliable. Each time we send out e-mails many get returned. Plus
our e-list at Yahoo will allow us to communicate with each other and
not just you all getting e-mails from us.
The way it works is when an e-mail is sent to the Yahoo address, by
anyone in the group, it goes out to everyone that is signed up as a
member. Any responses to an e-mail is also sent to the entire group.
So, for example, if someone asks a question about a race, everyone
gets asked and can respond and everyone will get the answer. It's like
a big round table discussion. If you don't want a bunch of e-mail's in
your mailbox just sine up to receive e-mail's in digest mode. That way
you will get 1 e-mail with all the letters of the day all in one.
We will most likely start to use this as our only form of
communication by summer so please sign up.
Thanks

CROATIAN OLYMPIC CENTRE BJELOLASICA PRESENTS:
ADVENTURE RACE
BJELOLASICA 2002
CROATIA
09-14 JULY 2002
Dare and Discover!
AFTER THE SEVENTH DAY OF GENESIS, GOD DIVIDED EARTH AMONG PEOPLE.
HAVING COMPLETED HIS MISSION, HE SAW A LITTLE BOY CRYING.
-I AM A CROAT. I WANT A PIECE OF LAND FOR MY PEOPLE. - BOY SAID
-BUT I HAVE NOTHING LEFT FOR YOUR PEOPLE. - GOD SAID.
THE BOY TURNED AWAY HIS TEARFUL EYES. AT THAT MOMENT, GOD SAID:
-WAIT! DO NOT GO! TAKE MY PIECE OF EARTH. AND TAKE CARE OF IT!
WELCOME TO THE MOST BEAUTIFUL EUROPEAN ADVENTURE!
WELCOME TO CROATIA!
Dear friends,
We are proud to present you the third edition of the spectacular
adventure race "Bjelolasica 2002", Croatia. This year the course will
take competitors through some of the most beautiful and diverse
terrains in Europe. More than a thousand islands, numerous wild
rivers, tempting mountains and thick pine forests make this divine
land a magical place for adventures, one of the last remaining
untouched wildernesses in Europe. The race hosts 40 international
teams that are given five days and nights to conquer the 320
kilometers of very attractive and treacherous course. In order to
reach the finish line, competitors will negotiate demanding challenges
of sea kayaking, river canoeing, mountain biking, hiking, fixed ropes
climbing, canyoneering and coasteering. All forms of civilization will
be avoided, forcing the competitors to rely on their survival skills,
teammates, physical abilities and mental preparedness. Navigating
through the entire course, each team will need to plan all things
necessary for survival: food, equipment, movement tactics, resting and
sleeping. Two days before the start, the entire course with maps and
instructions will be revealed to the competitors, giving them a little
time to adapt to the upcoming challenges that lie ahead. Some will
celebrate, some will fail, but everybody will experience adventure
that will be remembered for their whole lives.
The competitors will awake ghosts of the past by travelling through
historical places that have for centuries presented a great obstacle
for many conquerors. At the peak of their power, glorious Roman
legions have never suppressed the rebellion of hostile Iliric tribes
that were living here. The Mongolian invasion has stopped at the foot
of the Dalmatian strongholds. The Republic of Venice, the greatest
naval and trading power in the medieval age, has never succeeded in
conquering the glorious Uskoks of Senj, a town on Adriatic Sea below
peaks of Velebit Mountains. For five centuries this region defended
the Western Europe from the Great Turkish invaders. For its merits,
Croatia was named as "Eastern shield of Europe, the Defender of
Christianity". In its most recent history, this area was an invincible
bulwark for Serbian aggressors that attempted to conquer the heart of
Croatia.
Slavic tribes of Croats arrived in these territories in
the 7th century AD. Having seen the Adriatic Sea they probably thought
it was Paradise. There are few countries that have such natural
beauties on such small territory like Croatia. More that thousand
islands, numerous wild rivers, untouched mountain peaks and thick pine
forests make this land a unique place on the European Continent.
Through the challenges of adventure racing we will get to know this
country in a magical way and become a part of its extraordinary
beauty. The voyage will be hard and demanding, but everybody will stop
at least for a moment to enjoy the clearness of the Adriatic Sea, the
strong winds below rocky peaks of Velebit Mountains, scent of thick
pine forests in Gorski Kotar and raw beauty of the stone in Dalmatian
Zagora. At the finish line feelings will not be as they were at
beginning: everybody will take home a piece of Croatia.
Welcome to adventure!
