Kyle,
My involvement in AR started with a passion for outdoor activities and
endurance events. From time to time CAARA does offer training events for
new racers. For 2008, our goal is to increase the number of
training/educational activities directed toward newer racers. You should
sign up for the CAARA list serve to receive information on upcoming events.
You can also go to our website http://www.chicagoadventureracing.org
<http://www.chicagoadventureracing.org/> and check the event calendar for
upcoming events.
This spring CAARA should be offering a training event which will include
"mini-sprint" race in Lincoln Park. The idea behind the event is to learn
some basic skills and be able to practice them in a race-like environment.
We are hoping to provide each team with a mentor (more experienced racer)
for the "race".
AR can be an expensive sport if you are just starting out. The costs of
equipment can be tough on the budget. I was fortunate to have most of the
necessary equipment before starting AR. If you have participated in a
number of outdoor activities, chances are you might be fairly well equipped.
If you want to brush up on orienteering, you should go to the Chicago Area
Orienteering Club's website http://www.chicago-orienteering.org
<http://www.chicago-orienteering.org/> to check out their schedule of
events. They usually have a short class before every orienteering event to
help brush up on your skills.

Neil,
I pulled yours and several other Chicago Adventure Racing board members
information off from the web-site - I hope that is okay?!
A couple of friends and I would like to begin participating in adventure
racing in the spring of 2008.
That said, we have been involved with outdoor activities for most of our
lives, but need to brush up on some basics (i.e. Orienteering, etc..). Does
your group offer any classes/seminars/courses (enter learning forum here)
like this in the greater Chicago, Illinois area? If so, what are the costs
associated? When? How can we participate?
This is something that at least two of my friends and I would like to get
into - we would appreciate any guidance you can offer!
Please let me know if you can be of any assistance and/or point me in the
direction of a local that I might find helpful.
Thank you,
Kyle Kilcherman
