Note From Jim
Hi
The sun will shine again (well the sun is out right now) summer is kicking into full speed. Lots of cool stuff and fun events to do. Graduations & fathers day behind us 4th of July (the REAL kick off to summer) ahead. Water temps are coming up 67F in the ocean over 70F in the bay. All we need is some sun to bring back the fabled thermal winds on Lakes bay. I must admit though we've had some fun frontal wind sailing this whole time.

One "happy" note is with all these low preassure "distrubances we've had some fun surf. Nothing huge or "EPIC" but steady fun surf. Which we might be crying for come mid summer.

All in all the weather may not be "Chamber of Commerce" weather but to those in the know there is some fun to be had! And isn't that what summer is all about...FUN!

So what's in the newsletter
  • NJWWA (New Jersey Windsurfing assoc). Plus other Important Local notes below
  • Killer deals on Windsurfing & Stand up Paddle boards & Closeout sails
  • Masts/Booms Carbon vs Aluminum WHY?
On a local note:
1) I would highly encourage ALL New Jersey windsurfers, kayakers, SUP's & Kiters to join          New Jersey Windsurfing & Watersports Association
This is a hard working group to be sure windsurfing & other non powered watersports persons are heard in local & state wide issues concerning water access and other related issues...BUT it is MUCH MORE They are running social and race events to bring the us together as a community. PLEASE SERIOUSLY CONSIDER JOINING It could mean the world to you now and down the road

2) Note: Date change for our SUP Clinic & Demo THIS SATURDAY (6/27/09) 5pm meeting at the shop anyone interested needs to contact me if you will be demo'ing at karabaszJP@... This event is FREE come try out the most versitile watercrafts ever...Just Amazing! We'll have experienced instructors (Petra, Terry, Ben and yours truly) It will be a fun evening for all you non early risers SUP are still fun at dusk as they are at dawn or anytime for that matter.

Carbon vs Aluminum why/when you need more of it!
Ok in this day & age everything is made of carbon fiber. but not all carbon fiber is the same (neither is the resin or construction method) I don't wanna get to technical (because there are many more who know MUCH more about carbon fiber than I do.) but also because we are talking about windsurfing not the space shuttle technologies.
Anyway, the question may cross your mind Why can I buy a carbon fishing rod at Walmart for $20 ish, and the new carbon mast or boom  I want is is listed over a thousand dollars.

There is pure economic factors. How many carbon fishing rods are produced for every carbon mast or boom? economies of scale. Very boring so that is enough of Econ 101.
Windsurfing components use "High Modulus" carbon filiment. More like the filiment that makes up the cloth in the Airbus jets (oops didn't one of them go in the drink recently?) and even the space shuttle (let's not revist space shuttle disasters) I think you get my point even the best carbon fiber in the most tested applications  fail.

So why use this it is not exactly a "GREEN" Alternative. Well, unfortunately carbon just plain works better than anything we can find right now. This expensive, fallable, non green substance has 2 redeeming qualities.

1) Most important by far. Fast reliable reflex response...but you thought the main advantage of carbon was weight savings? weight is saved but reflex response is why sail designers LONG AGO went to designing sails on carbon (as opposed to aluminum or some fiberglass hybrid construction). So what is  Fast, reflex response. Technically speaking it is the time it takes (in hundreths of seconds) for a load to be equalized to a static position. In windsurfing terms when the sail is rigged (and carbon components are under load) a gust can be stabilized faster with carbon components than any other type. Sails feel more balanced & controlable. I.e. Feel better more lively.

2) The old favorite Carbon is lighter by linear foot. I can't tell you how many time folks come by the shop to talk about a carbon mast or boom, and do the old "lift test" to select the lightest one. Easy, fast and relatively correct method but totally missing the major point (refer to #1 above). But it feels good so we do it...Except you can have to much carbon in the mast. WHAT YOU SAY? To much of a good thing? Yeah in the past few years companies like Fiberspar, sailworks, Maui sails, Gaastra came out with ULTRA high modulus carbon masts. They don't work on every sail. Some they are a dream, sometimes these mast are IMPERATIVE, and sometimes they just screw up a perfectly good sail that only needs a 55% to 75% carbon mast.

Let's jump over to carbon booms a relatively newer developement in windsurfing. Windsurfing masts deflect to leeward causing drag. Booms deflect vertically underload allowing the center (CE) of effort to move erratically higher making the rig less balanced and again aluminum reflexes slower (returning to a rigged condition) than carbon. Alowing the rig to feel "out of balance longer. Yes tenths of seconds can mean the difference between planning & just pulling or catapulting or planning off.

OK enough science what is the story about carbon When do I need what & how much? Simple rules

1) When possible use the mast the sail is designed on. Race sails MUST HAVE THE MAST it was designed on (big pain) Freeride 7 Wave sails will work on any mast with the right characteristics. (Big guy trick here if a sail has an option Say a freeride 7.5 is designed to be rigged on a 460 with an alternative of 490 GO WITH THE STIFFER MAST) Freestyle sails use the softest mast possible (forget the above big guy rule)

2) The best return (fun) is to put more carbon into your  rig you sail the most (unfortunately this tends to be your biggest rig

3) Sails 6.5 and bigger GREATLY benifit from carbon boom. Do not over extend your carbon boom it negates the carbon advantages

4) Do not over extend your mast it will slow its reflex response. If you sail calls for a long extension use a carbon long extension for best results

5) Last but not least...MAKE SURE your mast ferrule is completely inserted into the top section as this WILL cause mast failure. The best way to do that is to assemble the mast completely outside of the luff sleeve. Wrap it 1X with electrical tape then insert & rig...This will also keep sand out making dis assembly easier too. (My Friend Augustine's trick)

So you don't need carbon everywhere (although I must admit once you do you never go back to aluminum) Use these perameters and I'm sure that when you add carbon components you will get the best "Bang for the buck"

5. Operational Notes / News
Ok it's SUMMER now. The thermal winds are/will be back!

This is it These are the days we long for all winter long forget the excuses and get out and WINDSURF, KITE, PADDLE

The shop at LAKES BAY is now OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK 10 am to 6pm for windsurfing, Kite surfing SUP Lessons, rentals and retail sales. Our warehouse ships all over the USA if you need something we got it at a GREAT price

A fun thing to do is plan a sailing trip to Lakes bay then set up a "Day Use" room at the Baymount Inn on site. They are VERY CHEAP during the week (weekends are still busy after all we ARE in ATLANTIC CITY a resort area) So you can sail real hard leave your rig on the beach step into a hot shower relax get warm. get some coffee. (JoJo's delivers enjoy a nice Italian meal in the day loby of the hotel with an inside view of Lakes Bay) Then go out Derig (or hit it again) and go home warm, relaxed & comfortable. With a GREAT day of sailing you didn't expect to get in this time of year.
It's like having a home right on the beach without the expense or hassle. Great way to enjoy offseason sailing without the uncomfortable wet cold ride home...Try it you'll like it!

Please contact us at the warehouse (484 515 5758) for all your windsurfing, Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) & kite questions & Equipment needs!

NOTE: We are FORCED by dealer Agreement to post on our website ONLY Suggested Retail Price Call the warehouse Shop or email us directly at karabaszjp@...
(it's not our rule we just have to deal with it)

Sorry for the late notice (AGAIN)

We had a GREAT swap meet last weekend lots of stuff sold and nice wind both
days.

This weekend we are hosting a STARBOARD & SAILWORKS demo weekend. Roger Jackson
& Ellen Faller will be running this at Lakes Bay (right at our shop) They'll
have the latest designs from both companies and most importantly know HOW they
work for you and get you set up to go out and see the difference.

"Back in the day" every manufacturer ran (or tried to run) a Demo clinic tour.
All but Starboards & Sailworks have fallen by the wayside, and this is due in no
small part to the energies, knowledge & hard work of Roger Jackson & Ellen
Faller. I personally would like to commend Roger& Ellen as well as Starboard &
Sailworks. These folks and the companies they represent do not hide behind slick
marketing or fancy paint jobs. Starboard & Sailworks bring their products out to
you the consumer and PROVE (beyond slick marketing) that their products will
improve your windsurfing experience (BTW We (EW) have a good amount of DEMO
Starboard SUP's for you to try as well)Come on out and see for yourself...IT IS
FREE!

Demo start each day at @ 11am and run to 6pm might be earlier on Sunday

I look forward to seeing you this weekend

Folks, I did some work over the winter and have updated my website WindsurfResource.com to include a number of middle peninsula launches (i.e., Mathews, Middlesex and Gloucester counties in VA).  I've opted to omit some of the launches that are privately owned (e.g., York River Seafood), and to refer to James' blog for the 6 Gloucester Point launches.  A big thanks to Paul Dovel for taking the time to discuss these launches with me last fall.

You can view them at http://www.windsurfresource.com/northern_neck.htm
Please check it out.  Please let me know if there are any errors or omissions.
Sincerely
Matt

Quick Update

First an ommission by me on next weekends Starboard & Sailworks demo Roger
Jackson will be joined by the LOVELY ELLEN FALLER They both have lots of
insights on both Starboards & Sailwork come by and say HI!

Petra (Kanz) President of LBRA and all around great gal both in & Out of the
water. She informed me that the LBRA in conjunction with Egg Harbor Twsp are
having a township wide clean up. The LBRA folks are starting down at PT Point
(the kite launch)at 9am where they pick up TONS of trash the past springs, but
Petra asked me if we would like to participate. I thought this was a GREAT IDEA
since we are in EHT too and a part of the community.

I thought I would take this one step further (maybe some might say one step to
far) Since Petra is bring the trash bags over in the morning I offer this
challenge
The Person who collects the most trash by weight during the swap meet (all day
Sat) from our beach and ajoining properties (putting said trash in the dumpster
after inspection)will get a FREE EXTREME WINDSURFING TEE SHIRT

So come on out help us clean up, get some KILLER deals on swap meet equipment
both in and out of the shop & WIN A TEE SHIRT What more could you want from a
Saturday???

Oh Yeah there is a swell at the beach...NOW THAT IS LIVING!

Well, this was the atmospheric set up that I eluded to last week.

In short from last week:

I see the potential for a 3 hour SE at Buckroe….

It would be nice if this thing would stall as I pick up the mother in law tonight.

YES, I may be able to sail for the next few weeks.

The bad news is this one (front) is kinda a weak tit and I don’t think it will blow 30.

However, if we get lucky and it turns on for anything more than an hour…

Buckroe goes off.

SE is without question the BEST direction for Broe.

…

At this point all forecasts are crap shoots,  too much going on, nothing seems to be dominate.

However, if the low stalls, high moves off and stops losing all it’s energy….

We could still possible see the SE.

..

I know, I’m adding a bunch of HOPE to my chop-cast.

Maybe it’s the Obama thing or maybe it’s just cause I want my first sesh back

To be really EPIC.

PS

It’s MOT going to be windy enough for a 4.7, maybe 5.2…

And if it’s 6.2 or 6.7 weather I’ll just do yard work.

Couple years back a guy died - right off of Ocean City.

Was paddling a kayak, wearing a dry suit... but with nothing
underneath.... fell in the water.... perished before the eyes of
onlookers.

I did not wear any cloths underneath, except for boxer shorts. HOLY SHIT! are you nuts? The Drysuit itself has no isolation. I find Under Armor & Fleece the best this time of year They got wet because I had to re rig with the drysuit on because of the lost mast cap.  During this rerigging, I was actually hot and sweating. Put on the UA & Fleece maybe a jacket. Rig, set stuff by water go back get into the OR suit, booties, Hood & Gloves if nessary. THEN GO SAILING  While sailing, I was just fine.  When the winds calmed down later, I sailed to PT point and back, and that is when I started to cool down too much. The Above procedure should help here too!

I never was gasping for air, but when it came time to take it off, yes it was a bit scary.  Yeah I should have put in my reasons for not getting the neck off 2 more points 1) PANIC & 2) Inexperience getting into & out of DrysuitsWhen I couldn't get my neck out, I went into my car, started it up, turned on the hot air, and tried to warm up.  After that, I gave it another shot and, with difficulty, it worked, I got out.  A tough undertaking, especially for the first time.  I probably was a combination of too cold and too tired.  After being in my car, I had enough strength and will to pull it off without destroying it.You handled it perfectly OR another idea is ask for help from spectators.   Thank God.  Maybe I should bring my baby powder next time? Baby Powder is ESSENTIAL to getting into the suit easily BUT does not help getting out particularly when any part is wet. Wet Baby powder has an adhesive quality. It is a DRY lubricant.

Note From Jim
Great Deals
2009 Event schedule for Lakes Bay
What's up in Stand Up Paddleboards 2009

GREAT PRICES, Friendly Service & NO ATTITUDE!

Note From Jim
Hi Everyone,
I think we have winter "on the Run" now. Windsurfing, Standup Paddle Boarding, kiting are just around the corner. For some of us it is just a change from winter frontal sailing/surfing to the fabled thermal fun @ lakes Bay!

I got to beg forgivness to my "pure" windsurfing readers. I've reined myself in on my exuberence for the new SUP stuff & What is happening in that area. Please don't read into this email that I've abandoned my interest in windsurfing. THERE COULDN"T BE ANYTHING FURTHER FROM THE TRUTH. It is just that I've found Stand Up Paddleboarding as a perfect compliment, NOT A SUBSTITUTE.

The feeling we all know, the excitement of planning in the straps, jumping & NOTHING matches the Gforce feeling of a planning jibe. As a matter of fact SUP's are a real pain in windy conditions. Although they sail nice and open up some REAL wavesailing opportunities. ANYONE who says SUP's are high performance substitutes for a real windsurfer is kidding themselves.

Windsurfing & Stand Up Paddleboarding are COMPLIMENTARY. SUP ROCK when windsurfing doesn't and visa versa. So let's get to it!

Couple of quick notes...PLEASE NOTE

Correction on the NJ Launch info it should be http://www.windsurfresource.com/. Great resource for traveling windsurfers around the state of New Jersey... Thanks Matt for all your effort!

The Hotel on site has a new name Baymont Inn & Suites Wyndham Family. No changes that directly effect windsurfing activities at Lakes Bay

Before we get to far into this, an easy request in the effort to avoid this newsletter being considered by you guys as worthless spam.
If you receive more than one copy of this (like I picked up 2 or more addresses for you ) Please email me what address needs to be deleted...This also keeps my costs down the group has grown to almost 1000 which would be more expensive. So help me be less of a pest to you

SUP's What is NEW for 2009!
Jim's Winter Adventures
I've been stoked about writting this all winter (I'll probably do a real hatchet job on it but I'm giving it a go!) I've been in the icewater of NJ this winter testing drysuits, wetsuits (yes even an amazing 3/2 that worked in super cold water) Paddles, fins. Probably to much testing of the leashes and some limited board testing.Thirty some degree (faraenheit) isn't a place to cut loose when you gotta the serious threat of a hypothermic death. I tell my wife all the time if I had to choose of a way to go Hypothermia would be a good choice. My wife retorts "Don't worry I (meaning my wife) can collect on your life insurance if you die from Hypothemia...I checked"
So with the lure of cheap (read free) accomidations and almost cheaper airlines I went on a 2.5 week Surf Safari. Not exactly Bruce Brown style (Endless Summer) but it got me out of bobbing around with the rest of the ice cubes in NJ.

First I went to sunny San Diego to see the new C4 warehouse & a lot of their new boards & paddles. It didn't cross my mind (yeah...RIGHT!) that they are in the same town as one of my favorite California waves, Cardiff Reef and up to Swami's. A nice reef and a Point break all within paddling (That is SUP paddling) distance of one another with a smattering of beach breaks to stop at in between. I drove by the C4 warehouse (looks big) so it counts as a "business" trip. After my time here I felt I was getting warmed up.

So with another invite from some friends in Hawaii and no reason to go home (cold/wet  EC winter) I was off to the North Shore. It was (for me) Big & Hairy got out on the North shore a couple of times, but in reality I had to drive round to find more reasonable surf. I had to be careful as I was not looking for an introduction to the BoyZ in the Black Trunks (Da Hui, not guys you wanna meet alone) and I found my way around to Makaha which is usually a no go spot for lone haole's looking for an easy surf. The BoyZ under the tree at the picnic table are, well let's just say they are more local than the Hui. However, I gotta admit at Makaha everyone was cool. As I took an overly mellow approach to the line up. Well, I guess not exactly everyone. After taking a rather good beat down in the inside soup. I pulled myself out of the water and was trying to catch my breath and muster up enough nerve to go out again. A Hawiian couple came up to me and said "I've heard of people looking like their dog...but not their surfboard". I was ridding a Starboard WHOPPER 10' X 34" wide. That kinda motivated me to get back out there and also later that evening to go easy on my "Blue plate" dinner.

So what have I learned about Stand Up Paddleboarding

Boards
I gotta give credit where credit is due My "Old Buddy" (that is a joke I don't even know him) Warren (WARDOG) from Surfing Sports in SB, CA said something like this            " We know what is to narrow width wise, but we need to experiment to find out what is to wide." I gotta say I totally agree. I find boards under 29" widths more work than fun and I've been ridding a Whopper 34" and I don't think that is to wide but then I think we know I'm TO WIDE! But for the average guy (size & ability wise) 30" wide seems to work the best for everyone. There are some Wahines (girls) out here ridding 24" and surfing/paddling around me, but they are less than 120#. Then there are "big time"team riders out here trying (and doing OK but working REAL hard)  Sub 27" wide board. The guys that were real impressive were ridding sub 8' boards @ 31 or 32" wide. But They were inside the lineup (scrapping for waves) with the regular surfers..not what I'm looking to do on an SUP.

Length seems pretty simple for great glide board lengths from 10Ft to 12FT seem to work best for a  around use. Although I had a GREAT paddle one evening with a 12'6" Starboard in Kialua waiting to get a ride on a Naish Glide. Which has a lot of advantages in flat and rougher water. I spent most of my time in some kind of surf. I got to admit the Starboard 11'2 "BLEND and the 10'5 DRIVE just rock in most size waves. Both get down the line with speed the 11'2 might be better in smaller surf & nose rides AMAZING (even with me on the nose) The DRIVE just turns on a dime (give you 9 cents change ) very reactive particularly with paddle turn (Paddle assisted turns) Personally I'd put the WHOPPER in that same group, but I have to admit it doesn't have a sleek/sexy surfboard look, but very much the Ugly Duckling (you know the book Ugly Duckling Grew up to be the swan)  I rode smaller boards but I gotta admit I had to cheat (Knee paddle out, Jump up catch/ride a wave) The C4 9'3 & 9'8 Sub vector & the Naish 9'3" were great. The stand out performance wise was the C4 9'3" Sub vector in a quad fin configuration it was fast down the line & rail to rail rode like a shortboard REALLY! I don't think I rode the shorter SUP's with enough agression to REALLY put them through their paces. One thing I found interesting was the use of QUAD fins. I have a real soft spot in my heart for Quads I was one of the first ASP surfers to ride a quad in competition (June 1985) They are FAST LOOSE and have great projections down the line So the C4 Subvectors (9'3 & 9'8")  were my favorite (in a quad configuration) The Naish 9'3 & 9'8 were great too but I think they took more getting use to.Shorter SUP's. I must say I had to lay off the paddle and just surf the board, as the quad was as loose as could handle surf wise.

One thing I gotta say that is being almost abused is the Rail configuration & rail volume. Some mfg are going with BEEFY (thick) rails. Although this improves narrower boards balance it makes wave ridding (any size) a "mushy experience" The Thinness of the Starboards really stands out as sharper more precise board control on the face of the wave.

Paddles

First of all I've worked on a new stroke (for me) More of a "D" rather than a long outrigger type paddle stroke. I got to paddle (in the surf) one of those (outrigger) for the first time Mahalo Kim, Clyde and the rest of the Boys from Waihanai) But anyway back to paddles

First of all we are talking carbon. Aluminum is cool, durable and cheap they work but once you use a carbon paddle EVERYTHING else just doesn't add up. Although I gotta admire the Kinimaka custom paddles. They are works of (WOOD) art & they work but they are NOT a carbon paddle.

Anyway, I used some C4 products the XPR flatwater paddle is amazing cut 10" taller than you it just flies a BIG difference than a surf paddle. If you are doing a good bit of Flatwater it is worth it. I also tried the C4 Stendy Fiberglass extendable paddle (on the fly) an "interesting" option in small surf (longer paddle when you are paddling out & catching the wave shorter while ridding) But I'm working on getting (using) my paddle as a pivot point on the wave face.  Plus it flexed a lot so that is not for me. But if you only have one paddle to share it is a good way to go.With the round grip (as opposed to the palm grip)I found myself looking at the paddle more to see where it was .
The standard. 8.5"blade C4 carbon paddle is still the state of the art paddle.

Although I've been using a POWEREX paddle since last July and LOVING it .I had to find a POWEREX to check out the new SUPER Durable edge. And I gotta say I met a real character, Joel (owner of said POWEREX paddle) he was more that happy to SMASH the edge against the road surface and showed me the paddle, not a nick! I took it and paddled out (not surfed) Wiamea bay. If felt just like mine at home (handled carefully no SMASHING)  But just so you know both the paddle and I got back in one piece. Joel was waiting for me to come so he could SMASH this paddle on the parking lot for the next disbeliever. Joel BOUGHT this paddle (no Bro deal, no freebie) although he had boards in his truck, he seemed to be hanging out in the parking lot at Wiamea park beating the POWEREX Paddle for fun ...it takes all kinds. I loved his bumper sticker "Make Rice Not Ice" North Shore '06.

I also tried a QuickBlade with a built in edge protector (Joel wasn't beating this one) real nice paddle but I like the bigger blade of the POWEREX and of course Joel.

So besides my new stroke technique, what I learned about paddles this winter breaks down to 2 things Blade Size and Flex.
Blade size I'm a big guy I like a big blade I can power it through the stroke and it makes "Sculling" paddling in one place i(e waiting for a wave in choppy conditions) much easier. Here the POWEREX shined.
Flex there is a lot of talk about paddle "pop" Flexing and releasing. Again I'm on the bigger side I like the solid feel of a stiff shaft like the C4 & POWEREX. I can see the advantages of a flexier paddles for
1) Lighter paddlers
2) Less powerful strokes
3) Folks with Shoulder & Back issues
The Quick blade and the Aquaglides fit this bill! While still working well for all sizes of paddlers.

Other Things You REALLY Need

Like I said in the beginning I started "testing" (that is meant in the broadest sense of the term NOTHING Scientific) Leashes. I broke them in EVERY conceiveable way/part. I tried straight ones coiled ones even retractable ones. yes, beacuse I broke so many I even went out WITHOUT a leash. Here is what I learned

a) Unless you are brain dead or want to become brian dead or inflict the same on other water users WEAR A LEASH all the time, every time, no matter what...Do us all a favor PLEASE! I'll get off the soap box now.
b) The ONLY leash I did not break (all though I seemed to lose several of them after loaning them out) Dakine Kainui. Beefy 5/16" Urethane cord (I replaced the rope it came with to Spectra rope downhaul rope) and a strong cuff with a key feature a cut loose pin (rip cord) Seems counter to point (a) but I've saved my body & board several times. It did however contribute to several LONG swims after.

Next is FINS I've just "dabbled" in this area and I'll be doing even more this spring and summer but having a flatwater (bigger vertical profile fin) is REAL nice to both Paddle & windsurfing. Beyond that I found switching from a 2 + 1 set up (2 smaller fide fins 1 larger rear fin) to a Thruster (all the same size fins) helps in smaller waves. Quad fins wow bigger in front smaller in the rear or visa versa? size? shape? cord? is going to be even bigger questions as the sport contunues to grow. There are even fins for your paddle???

Other helpful things, I'm never traveling without a Mule (carrying system not the four legged kind. Although I could use a Sherpa that doubles as a board caddy) I carried my Mr. Easy (12' X 32") into Upper Trestles (a mile or 2 felt like 100 miles) one day.
Sufice to say THAT WAS NO FUN! Deck Dots (EVA cutouts) used to cover board decks that don't have EVA. Wax is just a mess. Another thing I saw a lot of in CA & HI was waxing your paddle shaft to prevent your hand from slipping...YUCK! sticky gooey mess on everything your hands or paddle touch. I love the C4 Paddle Grip eliminates the need for wax on your paddle plus if you lose it (like me) in a wipe out the colorful grip makes it easier to find (as long as you don't pick green camo) The Aquaglide carbon paddles come with a built in lower grip...NICE! Lastly, I got to say the loose fit rashguard from C4 is really nice as a sun covering in Hawaii. The Victory Wetsuit rash guard is real nice as it sheds water too.

So that is more than most have cared to know about the state of SUP's from my meger perspective. If you got this far and you are not totally disgusted with my grammer, spelling & sentence structure I hope this rambling was of some use, or at least amusement.

Remember too we are offering FREE SUP Clinic/Demos through the year (check the Calendar for dates). Sign up check all this out for yourself. I'm SURE you going to be as STOKED as the rest of us are on Stand Up Paddleboards. SUP's the most versitile water craft I've ever found.

5. Operational Notes / News
Ok it's WINTER now. BUT NOT FOR LONG!
Be careful only go out in conditions you are confident in. sailing/Paddling, kiting buddy is CRITICAL this time of year...WHEN IN DOUBT DON"T GO OUT!
Winds are now generated by fronts and are more NE & NW winds

The shop at LAKES BAY is closed so make sure you are sailing with a buddy or at least someone on land knows where you are and when you plan on getting back. If you need anything just give our warehouse a call we can deliver anything anywhere.

2. Ocean Drive, across from deep channel in Corson Inlet esp for NE'ers;
3.  N. Dorset Ave, Ventnor Heights into Lakes Bay for N, NE winds;
4. U.S. 30 at u-turn into Absecon bay for NE, N and NW;
5. Ocean City Ocean side 42 to 59th; and

Some places that we have sailed from

Brigantine North and South end(a four wheel drive helps)

Ocean City from 46th to 59th

Strathmere is pretty regularly launched from I think it’s E Putnam(great on a NE wind)

The other side of Lakes Bay on North wind days( N Dorsett ave) there is a park there and a great place to rig up on grass)

Then there is Absecon Bay … again on anything out of the North … not much room to part(you could probably get 6 cars or so in there

Pete, you seem to windsurf all over geographically, perhaps you could tell me if I've included all the nj windsurfing launches on my website www.WindsurfResource.com.

I currently have 1) Lakes bay, 2) Corson Inlet, 3) Kennedy Park (Somers Point), 4) Bayview Park (Brant Beach), 5) Harvey Cedars, 6) Seaside Park , 7) Lavallette and 8) Sandy Hook (Lot C).

I still plan to add 1) Trixies ( Berkeley Island Park ), 2) Hereford Inlet, 3) Cape May and 4) Brigantine.

I plan to omit 1) Port-au-Peck ( Shrewsbury River ), 2) Spy House (Raritan bay), 3) Sandy Hook (Horseshoe cove) and 4) Spruce Run Reservoir ( Clinton , NJ ).

Did I miss anything?
Do you agree with my plans to drop the above 4 launches?

Matt

Wonder if anyone can identify this windsurfer. We inherited
it. Called Curtis Hawke Freestyle. The rudder is not attached or is
the sail or the part that you hold on to and we do not see how to
attach it all together. Is there some place we can contact to see
what is missing for the rudder to attach and how the sail and the
oval hand hold is attached.

Hi Kameran,

I believe there is a yahoo email listserv called "more downhaul" where people from Baltimore and DC discuss the windsurfing in the area.

You should be able to find it by navigating to www.windsurfbaba.org

The folks that are part of this club have races, and schedule annual trips to the outer banks among other things. Very nice folks.

Let me know if you have any trouble accessing this!

This is an article about a windsurfer who had to be rescued. The article states
why he needed to be rescued (the wind died). I would love to hear other such
articles of windsurfers being rescued and the reasons why and circumstances
leading up to the rescue. That way, I and others can be better informed
windsurfers. Thanks

What is NEW for 2009!

It a new year, new president excitement in the future abounds and that excitement is not lost here at Extreme Windsurfing at Lakes Bay!I wanna stress here that not everything that is new is a "Big Ticket" item sometimes...well a lot of times you can add "heaps" of fun to your windsurfing, paddling time with the simpliest (cheapest) upgrades. Yeah I'm going to talk about boards, sails, carbon booms and yes, they will add a lot of fun to your time on the water but read through there are some "gems" that won't upset your spouse. Which makes (coming home from) windsurfing and paddling even MORE FUN!

I will refrain from reviewing the NEW SUP stuff now. BUT I'm TOTALLY STOKED on the new boards from Starboard, Amundon, C4, Naish. Paddles from POWEREX (absolutely amazing) C4, Aquaglide, Werner & KINIMAKA custom wood paddles. Not to mention MULE transports,NEW SUP Leashes, Fins WOW just tons of amazing new stuff. Catch those next time sorry I just get TO STOKED!

Boards (just the highlights)

There are a bunch of new models out (as always) but I must say the real standout this year is the Starboard KODE
This is the "State of the Art "Freestyle Wave board. Don't let the high tech name fool you. These are the style of board most of us are looking for in medium to higher winds. Easy to sail, comfortable, reasonably fast. Freestyle Wave boards (or at least good ones) sail like you are on "Auto Pilot". The KODE comes in sizes to fit everyones quiver from 68 Liters to 122 liters. Check out the outstanding write up in the latest issue of Windsurfing Magazine.
Not to be overlooked theStarboard FUTURA although not exactly new. It came out last year, and in its first year out this board quickly became the benchmark Freeride board for Early Planning, Fast & comfortable sailing. Well, they improved it even more this year, by flattening out the rocker a bit (improve early planning & top end speed) and moving some width around the mast track The FUTURA will rock the freeride board designs again in 2009.

Fanatic is a board you hardly ever hear of but when you do it is GREAT! This year. They have an outstanding line returning with the Freestyle SKATE (98 to 108L)as the most comfortable freestyle board to just sail. The HAWK ( 93 to 135L) a Fast Turny board you can jibe this board with your eyes closed it is so easy (please don't)and still blow the doors off anybody in a straight line. The Freewave (77L to 113L) has been an outstanding Freestyle wave board. The shapes are HIGHLY refined as Fanatic is the only mfg. using a CAD design system for true progression. The NEW model this year is the RAY a Freerace board that is perfect for what most of us do (go fast in a straight line Jibe and come back (hopefully w/o falling) The RAY (93 Liters to 135 Liters) has the speed of the raceboards and the comfort (thru control) of a Freeride.  What impresses everyone is the construction quality you get a custom lay up (lightness/stiffness at a great production price, and super durable to boot.

There are some outstanding boards from JP (Excite Ride & Freestyle Waves) New for us this year is Exocet, and of course BIC, Mistral & Tabou. More on these another time.

Sails

Big news in sails are the two  EZZY wave sails The Wave Panther is designed along the more modern SE Waves Lots of power, draft forward, Lighter and even more bomb proof with the inclusion of TECHNORA fiber.  The Panther is a higher aspect.  In deference to those who liked the flatter Ezzy's of "yesteryear" the Freestyle Wave a Flat faster wave sail. The Freewaves incorperate the Technora fiber to make this sail indistructable..well almost.
Ezzy made a big "splash in the Freeride market last year with the FREERIDE model a G a bomb proof sail with great lowend power and top end speed. The Freeride remains basically unchanged but the addition of the Technora fiber further improves durability while reducing weight...all at a great price!
Ezzy also offers a nice 2 cam recreational sail called the INFINITY and a super charged Lightwind performer the ZEPHYR as a no cam (7.5 only) amazing sail!

Sailworks Flagship design is the RETRO This sail continues to be the benchmark of no cam freeride sails. Full scrim construction and a HIGHLY REFINED design adding a boom cut out to reduce swing weight. Sailworks this year has worked at shaving off weight while keeping performance and durability. The reduced the head area and lowered the center of gravity. To set the 2009 Retro as the Benchmark of Freeride sails.

If jumping and speed are your interests w/o the hassle of race sails or cams The Sailworks HUCKER is the ticket. This is the "Power Riders" dream a tight leech cool graphics. This sail ROCKS. Sailworks has one of the nicest Wave Freestyle sails in the REVOLUTION and if you are looking for a Junior Rig that will excite your kids the RIPPER is the call.

I'm also excited about The Severne line particularly the GATOR which is a more handling oriented freeride sail. Also Maui Sails, Gaastra, Naish & Aerotech.

Components (masts, Booms, extensions UJ's)

Mast, still the developement is in RDM Skinny mast. They are far more durable with equal performance to std. diameter mast. The only drawback is they trap less air inside, so they aren't as "Floaty" as a std mast when water starting. RDM seem to have the advantage in 460cm and below. Longer than 460cm it seems to have a dimishing return .

The REAL EXCITEMENT is the carbon booms by MAUI SAILS. These are the lightest stiffest most amazing booms on the market MauiSails® Carbon Boom detail. Not to mention DURABLE. From the outstanding boom head easy to use and super stiff. Through the Pre-preg reduced dia grips and the monoque tail piece that has the smoothest adjustment. I wish I could say it is inexpensive but I can say it will be MUCH LESS EXPENSIVE here at Extreme Windsurfing.

Extensions are well extensions carbon?, aluminum? Euorpean std pin or US cup       (still my favorite but I'm kinda old school guy) You need what you need long, med or stubby.

Univrsal Joints (UJ's) These are kinda over looked until they break. Here is a simple rule if you have ones (rubber or Tendon) over 3 yrs old they need to be replaced. I'm NOT trying to pump up sales I'm just being real Breaking a UJ IS A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE and can have severe consequences in certain sailing conditions/situations.

Performance wise why one over the other? I'll give you a simple overview

RubberJoint Traditional design, proven. Dampens most vibrations. Since the "old" Windsurfing Hawaii AIR foot went defunct Worked like truck air shocks didn't help the rigs feel much but that is another story. Rubber joints fail from the inside out (hard to know when they are going to fail.)

Tendon Joints (Smaller rubber joint) Popular in the 80's & 90's when foot height of a sail was considered critical to topend speed. (proven not to be any factor as sail testing/design got more sophisticated). All the same short comings of the std Rubber joint but aplified by it's smaller mass. It did lower the foot height minimally.

Mechanical Joints They go in and out of popularity for various reasons. But design wise they are FAR superior to rubber joints. Much more durable, Easy to see wear (Failure) fixable and repairable. Mechanical joints transfer almost 100% of the rig power to the board/fin to generate speed. Lastly they layover and don't want to spring the board upside down when waterstarting.

Accesories (cool Stuff to enjoy windsurfing)

First of all if you sail sails 7M or bigger you are missing out on at least 15% of your sails range by not using an ADJUSTABLE OUTHAUL. It is a bit of a pain to rig the first couple times but once you have it you'll be AMAZED at what your sails can do in both early planning & top end speed. They Run about $50 and can in some quivers reduce the need for one whole sail size in ones quiver.

Can't get excited about uphauls? Check these 2 out. Dakine has an easy grip Uphaul called POWER UPHAULS it is a std uphaul (4 Knot type) with EVA Grips built in. BUT If you REALLY want to make uphauling big sails easy NJ designed EASY UPHAUL IS THE CALL. No need to use your arms and beat up your hands. Let your legs and weight lift it for you. VERY COOL set up.

I'm also a BIG FAN Of Sailworks QUICKTUNE LINES. These are Truely on the fly adjustable lines that the mechanism hold up to corrosion. Plus The components of the QuickTune lines are repair able So it will be the last set of lines you ever need. They Run $39Chinook also makes a bombproof adjustable line that seems to work too. These Run $59.

If you are a fan of fixed harness lines the new DAKINE : MONO HARNESS LINES revolutionized ease of operation durability and most of all BALANCING THE RIG. This Improvement comes at a REDUCED PRICE $18 set. WHAT MORE CAN YOU ASK FOR?

Last but NOT least a wetsuit that does it all Warm (water temp as low as 45F) Flexible, durable made specifically for windsurfing and SUP's Even distributed right here in NJ. I'm talking about the HyperFlex MOJO Suit details It is by far the warmest 3/2 suit ever. Easily as warm as any 4/3 around but is SUPER flexible. and it is only $149.

There are tons of othe things that make windsurfing fun. FINS are a whole topic unto themselves having 2 or 3 fins (0ne comes with just about everyboard) can really add range to your current board (Fins cost LESS than boards). Things as simple as tiedown straps have improved. Stop by or give me a call 484 515 5758 youi'll be AMAZED there is even more fun (w/o spending a ton of money) than you !thought

See you on the Water!
