Hey everybody, I just learned that there are now three (3) new windsurf launches in Anne Arundel county, MD.  As a result, I have added them to my website!!!  The descriptions include directions, Photos, fees, hazards etc.  Check it out at now at  www.WindsurfResource.com!!!
Or, click on the following links:
1) For the Fort Smallwood launch, click on: http://www.windsurfresource.com/fort_smallwood.htm
2) For the Downs Park launch, click on: http://www.windsurfresource.com/downs_park.htm
3) For the Jonas Green Park launch, click on: http://www.windsurfresource.com/jonas_green_park.htm

To find out about other launches in the Northern Chesapeake, including the Baltimore area, check out http://www.windsurfresource.com/upper_chesapeake.htm

And another reminder to potential buyers of gear, now is the time TO GET MORE FOR LESS!!!  We are in a recession, in an imploding sport, and in the Autumn, there is always more supply (sellers) of gear than demand (buyers).  So go out there and get em!

Tomorrow (9/14), is the Lakes Bay Swap at in West Atlantic city, NJ and Sun (9/21) is the EOM autumnal swap.

The way the van tent fits around the back of the van is pretty good
but can't be as mosquito tight as a ground tent.

Yes, it seems to keep the mosquitos out. I say, "seems", because the
mosquito population was not terribly thick the times when we used the
van tent. We had a few, very few mosquitos in the van tent. I can't
be sure whether they came in while we were putting up the van tent or
through opening the other doors while getting in the van or whether
they came in somehow around the edges of the van tent.

We've used the van tent in moderate temperatures when mosquitos are
less active.
Since it is off the ground and we have the van around us on three
sides it is warmer than a ground tent. It is also quite good at
keeping us dry when it rains at night. Water doesn't seep in a tent
that is more than a foot off the ground. The box the van tent comes
in is about 12-15 inches square so it doesn't take up much storage
space.

Looks like it includes a drop-down mosquito net.

Ever slept in it with the back open, covered by the mosquito net
- which mosquitos in the area?

Did it keep them out?

My 2005 Honda Odyssey is long enough a Mistral Equipe (372 cm or about
12'4" long) fits inside with the nose on the dashboard (which
eliminates nearly all seating except for the driver). But a 285 cm
(about 9'4") long and 40 inches wide formula board fits inside on it's
side in the center with room for the driver and several passengers.
Either board will also fit on the roof rack.

Gas mileage with a full load of camping and windsurfing gear plus the
formula board inside plus the driver and a passenger and with the
Equipe on top is about 23-25 mpg on the interstate at about 65 mph.
The same load without any board on top, but pulling a 650 to 800 lb
trailer gives about 20 mpg on the interstate. Both mpg figures are
from 5 to 8.5 hour trips on relatively flat midwestern interstates.

There is room for me to sleep in the Odyssey on one side while the
formula board is still in the van too. The windows on the 2nd set of
doors go down about 2/3 of the way. We use magnetic window screens on
the 2nd set of door windows.

We also have a Dac Explorer 2 "van tent" we got through the Campmor
catalog which covers the rear lift gate and provides a huge amount of
ventilation. There are other models of that "van tent" which cover
different varieties of vehicles.

Matt,

1) Did you sleep inside your van?  If you did, how did you stay cool on a hot summer night?
I did sllep in it with the windows open. I had 60/40 w/pop out windows, same in rear. These had screens that I probably got from JC Whitney

2) How do the Chevy or GMC .75 ton vans compare and contrast with the Ford Econoline?
Can't say. I never had an issue with the Chevy/GMC so never had reaso to consider switch. I had three from '80 - '98 when I moved to Oz.

3) What kind of highway gas mileage did you get?
I actually didn't pay that much attention to it. I just refer to the stats from the maunfacturer.

4) About how many miles did your odometer read before you moved to Australia?
First van was about 150,000, bought it used.
Second was about 110,000, had for 10 years.
Last one I only had for 3 years before I moved, around 70,000 I think.

5) Last van I had customized up front. The day I went to the dealer, a rep from a conversion place was there and overheard me describing the type of customization I was looking for and he said he could do it for me. Front was all custom, carpet, captain's chairs, etc. Eterior had custom sport package, running boards and all. The back was wide open and I built racks myself mostly from PVC. I got floor liner from JC Whitney. I'd do it differently today but still do it myself. Boards Magazine, UK Windsurfin' mag, has ads for some pretty slick racks made of metal that attach to the side of the van, check www.vehicle-racking-systems.co.uk/pages/plans.

Hope that helps.

Hi Matthew,

Before I moved to Sydney, Australia 10 years ago, I had either Chevy or GMC .75 ton vans with long wheel base. They are fantastic, mileage may suck but all your stuff fits INSIDE. I used them for 15 years before the move. If I moved back to the US the first thing I'd do is get a new one.

Dear Pete Cresswell, Paul Landau and Ed Hart, thanks for the info.  For each of the 1) Honda Element, 2) Toyota RAV 4, and 3) Subaru Forester respectively, I would like to know the following:
1) do the boards go on a rack or inside the vehicle?
2) if the boards fit inside, do you have to remove a seat, like the front seat to fit the boards inside?
3) what kind of highway fuel efficiency do they have?  What kind of fuel (what octane) does it take?
4) Can they be used for driving on the beach in Hatteras?  Generally, you need a 4 wheel drive vehicle with the tires deflated to do so
5) Do any of you sleep in the vehicle?  If so, how do you stay cool on a summer night?
6) Do any of you have an extended warranty for your vehicle?
Pete, could you answer the following for the Honda Element, Paul, could you answer the following for a Toyota RAV 4 and Ed, could you answer the following for a Subaru Forester?  Your answers will not only help me out, but also any windsurfer in the future who may be thinking of getting a vehicle.  Thanks!

First, This coming weekend Aug. 23 &24we are Hosting our LAST DEMO of the year Starboards & Sailworks Roger Jackson & Ellen Faller will be at our site on Lakes bay to answer question and get you out on the water. It is definitely NOT to late in the year to pick & enjoy a new board from Starboards or one of the great Sailworks sails. There will e limited demo boards for sale at AMAZING prices. The best stuff goes early so come by and stake your claim. There will even be SUP's on sale great way to get into this very cool sport.

Secondly, For the first time ever Extreme Windsurfing will be hosting a SUP (Stand Up Paddle Board) Clinic (Flatwater & wave) on SUNDAY SEPT 7th. This is a FREE event. For everyone weather you wanna try SUP's or if you're already own one and want to expand your SUP experience. 2 of the area's most experienced SUP ridders our own Ben Schnaibel & Terry Junker will start you off right at the shop at Lakes Bay and after getting your feet wet (for real) we'll head out to one of our wonderful local beaches for some ocean paddling & wave ridding. It is going to be a fun gathering in a non competitive situation to enjoy a different day at the beach. I'm sure enlightening as to the possibilities of the SUP locally.
All we ask is that you sign up before hand by emailing me karabaszjp@... to let me know you are coming and if you have an SUP. If you have equipment and are willing to "share alittle" for this event please let me know as there will be a special gift for you.....

Little Things to make Windsurfing more Fun

It is easy & fun to focus our thoughts on the BIG things in windsurfing, Boards, Sails even mast and booms can be intriguing...Well, to some of us. These are BIG bright colored things non windsurfers say "Man that looks cool! And they are cool but there are a lot of over looked little things that can make a big difference in ones windsurfing fun factor. Mundane things like....

FINS yes more learned and important people than I have written VOLUMES on Fin design and relivance. Can't afford a new board or rig this year (probably your stock fin on the board you bought a couple of years ago is all ground down and beat up anyway) simply adding a fin or 2 to your favorite board will give it a "SPARK" you never knew it had. In a simple statement consider the importance of fins by looking at them as "UNDERWATER SAILS" Which in a lot of ways (create lift, twist off to control ect...) They are!

How about something as simple as "Harness Lines" not exactly a "sexy" item.We use the ones on the boom until they break. Then we get other ones that look the same. Which is "OK" but consider the value of a good set of Adjustable Harness lines. Like Sailworks. These on the fly Adj. lines have an amazing influence on rig balance & ease of sailing in different conditions. Or if that is to much to deal with how about the NEW Amazingly simple Mono Lines from Dakine. You can balance a rig with these lines in seconds and be out on the water sailing effortlessly. Imagine no more rig wrestling (I think I've got that in the London Olympics as afull medal sport) or restting lines every time you sail or change sail size.

There are a bunch of other equally basic NON sexy items Like Spectra Downhaul line last up to 5X longer than that old dacron stuff that will break soon and leave you stranded (really) or Downhaul cranks not exciting I admit (lives in the bottom of your gear bag with who know what???) but man lose that "Tug Cleat" save your back & elbow (trust me on this I KNOW) and rig your sails RIGHT & effortlessly. Don't get me started on the JOYS of Adjustable Outhauls...let's just say it's one of the cheapest WOW factors I know of.

So next time you are in the shop or talking to me on the phone or net let's talk about some not so exciting stuff it will be worth it!

4. Operational Notes / News
We have a new addition (at least for a little while) Petra Kanz will be running Extreme Windsurfing while she heals from a hand injury. I know we all wish her well and I know she'll be back in the water as SOON as she's better. There is no better time to stop by and get her ideas on what will make your windsurfing more fun.

Also importantly I've met with the new owners of the Hampton in Tabby & Gary(Sonny's daughter & her husband) Absolutely lovely folks (their 4 boys are learning to windsurf) They are as excited as we are to continue windsurfing & Extreme Windsurfing here on Lakes Bay for many years to come.

** NEW PROCEDURE:

* Water temp PLENTY WARM Spring suit or Trunks

* WATCH OUT FOR DEHYDRATION THIS CAN SEVERELY HAMPER YOUR COORDINATION ON THE WATER WE HAVE A SNACK BAR ON THE DECK WITH WATER & DRINKS ( sorry non alcholic only)

* The Shower is gone. Hotel will not permit it to be rebuilt I suggest brining a sun shower. We SHOULD have water avail to fill sunshowers (Bring the Sunshine (warmth) too!) ONLY No equipment washing permitted.

For any of you who are interested in windsurfing at the Olympics, I have found the following links: 1) http://www.nbcolympics.com/sailing/resultsandschedules/rsc=SAM102901/index.html for the men’s RS:X results and 2) http://www.nbcolympics.com/sailing/resultsandschedules/rsc=SAW102901/index.html for the women’s RS:X results.  Alternatively, go to http://results.beijing2008.cn/WRM/ENG/Schedule/SA.shtml and then click on the results for RS:X men’s and RS:X women’s.  There are probably many other websites that also have schedules, results and photos, which can be found by googling “Olympics”, then looking for the schedules and results for the genre of sailing and then the sub-genre of boardsailing or RS:X.

I noticed that each of the men’s and the women’s RS:X has 10 races and a Final, 2 of the 10 races have already been completed.

Jim, how do they calculate the winner, 2nd place etc from the above 10 races and the Final?

For the men’s RS:X, Benjamin Barger representing the US was 21 out of 34 in the first race and 22 out of 35 for the second race.  For the women’s RS:X, Nancy Rios is representing the US, and she placed 25 out of 27 for the first race and 24 out of 25 for the second race.

Jim, being such an affluent and powerful nation that the US is, why can’t the windsurfers representing the US at the Olympics make a commensurate showing?  Why do we place near the bottom in windsurfing?

it is looking like a nice afternoon today it is already 19 with gusts to 23 at LBI

here is the forecast from iWindsurf

S to SSW winds increase Saturday into Sunday. Potentially strong SSW flow by Monday.
A few adjustments to the forecast mainly for Monday this morning. Slow start to the weekend with a high dominating the area, but this should change by Sunday as the high moves offshore and next front approaches from the west with building southerlies for the afternoon. Trend is to slow down this front as it moves in from the west, meaning a better shot at some moderate to strong SSW winds by Monday.

Saturday:
Light W to SW winds to start. Afternoon seabreezes top out in the low to mid teens along New Jersey and eastern beaches of southern Long Island. Hudson river should also see at least some low teens work northward during the afternoon.

Sunday:
Light SW start again, but things should pick up for the PM. Widespread upper teens develop along the NJ coast, with Lakes bay and LBI hitting some low 20s with sun. Long Island also sees mid to upper teens favor the eastern half of southern Long Island beaches, though Plumb and Jones may see some low teen action as well. Better chance for mid teen to funnel up the Hudson as well.

Monday:
Front holds well west of the region now. Potential for widespread 20s with some mid 20s possible into southern NJ and eastern tip of Long Island.

Forecast above prepared by meteorologist Kate Looney.

and the Marine Forecast from Weather Underground

Extreme Windsurfing    -    July 15, 2008    609 641 4445/ 484 515 5758

Extreme Windsurfing GREAT PRICES, Freindly Service & NO ATTITUDE!

  Hi Everyone,
Summer is in full swing here at Lakes bay. Weathers been warm & dry, water is balmy & we've had wind (planning) 3 plus times per week. New stuff's been flying in & out of the shop. New personel on site, and I JUST got  back from a GREAT SUP wave session.  So I'm STOKED!

Just a BUNCH of stuff to talk about but first I gotta thank a customer/freind of mine who offered some proffessiional writting skills to me. Huck Fairman and his wife Pam were kind enough to look over my news letter, and offer some suggestions (like be more concise... I know I'm ignoring that suggestiion right now but I'll try) but in reading their work (or rework) I got 2 other ideas

ONE, we the windsurfing community are kinda like a "tribe" and alot of us have products & services that others of us might need from time to time. Kinda like Huck & I. I'm proposing to anyone who is interested to put up a page on my website with the names email or tel # of anyone or company assoc. with windsurfing that would like to be listed (FREE) I'll just provide a list not references or details but putting one windsurfer in touch with another everything from painters mechanics ect to guy like Huck providing consultive services. Even if you have a website or blog like our friend Matt put up an informative website bw_windsurfing : Baltimore Washington DC Area Windsurfing I know I'd prefer to deal with someone like me than pull out the yellow pages.
Basically if you are interested in listing all I need is your service, name, email website and whatever you want listed Remember I'm trying to keep this basic!

SECOND, Back to my buddies Huck & Pam's suggestions. They suggested I put my MOTTO at the head of my newsleter. Which got me thinking Extreme Windsurfing is kinda like a windsurfer it goes where the wind blows as opposed to say a big corporation is like abattleship parting the ocean on it's way. Pam offered some ideas and they got me thinking. Particularly This one (Extreme Windsurfing) GREAT PRICES, FREINDLY SERVICE & NO ATTITUDE! This got me thinking about WHY Linda Hodecker (my previos partner) started Extreme Windsurfing. Of course we saw that SNJ needed a good shop (2 had just closed 15 yrs ago) and with Linda around you can't help but get a FREINDLY reputation, But both Linda & I experienced a better than you type of attitude while buying windsurfing equipment. Both Linda & I were experienced & knowledgeable windsurfers, but we were commited that at EW we would listen and help our customers select equipment THEY wanted, not push what we thought was COOL.

I hope you'll see that motto not just on our Newsletter
Now, actually taking the adviseI I was given (Keep it Short)

 Lots Going on SUP wise

We've been getting new convert pretty much daily and the Starboards ability to be sailed, paddled & surf  along with their killer designs has them the most sought after SUP's. The 11'2 and the 9'8 FISH seem to be dominating in the waves, but ther eare plenty of 12'6" devoutee's in both surf  & flatwater. Sailing (surf & Flatwater) seems to favor the 12'6. Personally I love my 12' in the surf & flatwater but I can feel the difference in glide.

I've been perfecting riding river waves & whitewater, been playing on boat wakes. Bunch of customers raving about sailing SUP's in flat & waves. Tom's talking about doing a moonlight cruise (w/o the booz I hope)

Speaking of Flatwater paddling 5 intrepid paddlers paddled in the Donny Row on Lakes bay in june. When we got to registration at the Pleasantville Yacht Club we were greeted with 15 mph head wind and big chop out on the bay. 4 of us seemed ready to settle into a great breakfast and forgo the whole paddling thing. But Tom Huetter said why not do a mile half downwinder from PT Point back to the YC. So we had to delay our breakfast order and we all (Ben Schnaibel on a 12'6, Terry Junker on a 9.8, Mark Hawks on a 12', Tom Huetter on a Mistral Pacifico 11'6" & me on a 12'6 PLUS Pete Creswell on a sea kayak)piled into vans drove up to PT point paddled as a group all the way down to the Yacht Club. Arriving to inquizical looks and questions about "Those Surfboards" Joining the interpid paddlers were Pat Smith (ground crew for the paddlers driving a car for us to get back to PT point) Murray "Burger Boy" runner & Linda Hodecker & Norma (political player in our area) joined us for a GREAT breakfast . We had an interuption when the local media wants us for some pictures but to lure us back out (to get wet...AGAIN) they offered us another breakfast and all we could eat...how can you turn that down.

All in all it was a great event and we hope more of you will be joinng us next year, and not just for breakfast

Hi

This is REALLY SHORT

First it is my sorrowful duty to let everyone know our good friend & Landlord at
the Hampton Inn (our Launch site) Mr. Bagraduni (Sonny as he was known by all)
pasted away May 2nd. His hard work & tolerance of all of us windsurfing on "HIS"
beach. He gave us (Windsurfing & specifically Extreme Windsurfing) a shot 15
years ago. I/we can not thank him enough! Our relationship with the current
management his God Son (Sarkis) is excellent and I see no changes in our
operations in the foreseeable future.

If you could remember our freind Sonny he would want to be remembered not only
as the godfather of windsurfing @ Lakes Bay but as a man who was proud of his
ethnic heritage and HONORED to be an American... A true PATRIOT. His favorite
saying was "Only in America..." and he meant it and lived it everyday.

On a happier note

Petra asked me to remind everyone she is having a Shortboard clinic at the bay
this Saturday May 24th. This is a GREAT opportunity to get tuned up & pick up
some tips to really improve your sailing THIS season. Contact Petra directly
petra_kanz@...

It's going to be GREAT weather this weekend & looks like wind the shop is open
10 am to 6pm Sat/Sun/Mon...soon to be open 7days a week stay tuned Great deals
on 2008 Windsurfing, kitesurfing & SUP's newstuff arriving all the time

See Ya Soon

Extreme Windsurfing's News and Notes

WOW! Spring is really SPRUNG here at Lakes bay the weathers been good so far (knock on wood) The water temp is rising steadly in the Mid 50's It's actually PLEASANT! Even got out for my first wave session (in the rain last Monday) Things are popping at the shop too. New 2008 Boards from Starboard & Fanatic (still waiting on our JP Preseason) Sails the NEW Sailworks Retro's are in still just as fast but easier handling & of course the SUP's are trickling in (just about every MFG is b/o on something) and FLYING OUT THE DOOR!
We are fully stocked on Accessories, Fins, Mast booms parts. We even still have some closeout & Demo Boards & sails. Basically...You need it we got it!

We are updating events. You could call may at Extreme CLINIC MONTH (details below!)

In a nutshell...Things are popping stop by or call us 484 515 5758 (warehouse) Shop is open Weekends (weather & employee health permitting...long story) 10 am to 6pm 609 641 4445

In this Edition
Everything has a value BUT Knowledge is PRICELESS
SUP NEWS I'll refrain from my pure stoke just CONTINUE to give a KILLER DEAL
Fins the best money you can spend to improve your windsurfing

Knowledge is Priceless

OK, sounds like something some teacher would say. OK I hang around teachers to much I hire them, I work with them, I'm even married to one, and I hated school (if it weren't for Athletics I'm not sure I'd have gone..but that's another story.) You probably guessed that by my grammer & punctuation here...but I digress.

Folks come in my shop and buy windsurfing equipment (thus the name EXTREME WINDSURFING) I love to talk about boards, sails, masts, booms, wet/drysuits. Even nuts & bolts & repairs excite me I LOVE IT! Seeing someone just "Light Up" after using that New ---- the stoke is refueled!

I must admit however that in these rambling discussions I find myself talking about a lot of techniques (windsurfing) Although Equipment is important to enjoy windsurfing. Proper technique & time on the water practicing (even when its not that windy) are critical too.

Time on the water I'll tak about in a later artical.

You'd be surprised how hard most people work at windsurfing. Windsurfing doesn't have to be as hard as your working at it right now! The fastest way to have more fun windsurfing is to learn to do it EASY (the RIGHT WAY) Rigging (board or sail) RIGHT is a primary first step. If you are wondering if it's rigged right just stop by the shop we'l be happy to help.
Also  at Extreme Windsurfing we have an excellent staff of Windsurfing instructors who can/do give intermediate & advanced lesson just like we do hundreds of beginner windsurfing lessons. Call us any time to set up a private lesson. BUT this month MAY we are offering some unique opportunities.

First we are really excited to welcome back Somers Point's (town a couple miles awy from Lakes bay) "prodical son" ANDY BRANT & ABK clinic on May 9 thru 11 Here are ALL the details

Dear Baltimore/Washington area Windsurfer:

This message is to alert you all to a new windsurf website. It is WindsurfResource.com. As the name says, it is a resource for windsurfers, but tailor made for windsurfers in the mid-Atlantic area (Maryland, Northern Virginia, DC area). Having had to go through some hard knocks myself, I thought I would share with you my knowledge so that others will find their progression through the sport less confusing and more organized and smooth. Windsurfing is not a privilege, but a right, and thus I hope that this website will tear down some of the barriers of entering and advancing in the sport.

WindsurfResource.com provides information on 1) windsurf launches of interest to those of MD, DC and NVA providing directions thereto and information about the launch, 2) a glossary providing definitions for common windsurf jargon, 3) a calendar describing what each month and what each season means for the windsurfer in the Baltimore/Washington area, 4) links to other websites of interest to windsurfers and 5) a load of other stuff designed to make your journey through the sport as efficient, coherent and as optimistic as possible.

Therefore, read through the glossary, the calendar, the launch info and the links, and get a leg up on the sport.

Here are some important guidelines. First, when visiting WindsurfResoruce.com. I’ve tested
it with Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 and Netscape Navigator 9 only, so try to use one of these browsers when viewing WindsurfResource.com. Other browsers such as Opera and Mozilla have not been tested.

Second, the future effectiveness of this website largely depends on feedback from you, such
as providing me with information on new launch sites, or other pertinent information that would make a nice addition to WindsurfResource.com. If you want to write to me, send a message to WindsurfResource@.... This includes, but not limited to, launch info in such locals as Assateague, Chincoteague, the lower Potomac, and the Northern neck of VA.

Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Mobile. Try it now.

Extreme Windsurfing's News and Notes

Springs been a little slow coming yeah we had an easy winter but so far this spring we've had some nice days (not real warm just nice). I have a NOSE for spring it tells me the EXACT momment spring arrives around me...That was yesterday at 4:53pm. Exact right? Well let me tell you how IT (my nose works) I was out on a soccer field (doing my thing Coaching that is) with my team getting ready to take on our most serious league rivals. The team had completed the stretching and warm up drills and we were in the middle of some serious tactical points for todays game...When spring came...It hit me like a ton of bricks overcoming my 12hr allergy medicine (which I have to take all the time to live with the familly dogs...I'm pretty sure that was a ploy by my wife to kill me slowly but that is a whole other story) My asst. coaches thought I might not make it (eye stated watering, & uncontrolable sneezing ect...) I'm pretty sure the team (girls) were happy I stop talking because I know they were tired of listening!

To make a long story short I survived (much to my wife's chigrin I think) As I was driving home with the sneezing & blowing it shook my brains enough I SAID HEY IT'S SPRING....TIME TO GO WINDSURFING! So I thought I'd write this newsletter to remind you (w/o the sneezing & blowing I hope) of the same. Let's GO WINDSURFING

Things the Magazine test FORGOT
I admit it I read all the board tests (just like most of you) I sorts of focus on the Windsurfing Magazine test & Windsport (the Canadian magazine) These 2 publications could be more different.

WS mag kinda hangs out at a tester's house on the Banana River in Fla plays with some boards has a round table and then we get PIE (charts) If you were on the deck at the shop talking about equipment and some of these (WS Mag testers) interjected into your conversation you'd have to hold back your laughter (that SOME not all) if you knew them as I know them.

Windsport I've seen their compound in Hatteras they are serious. Meassuring, weighing talking to designers testing retesting and best thing of all NO PIE charts. Just the facts (specs) little "I feel" "We Think". Minor amounts of non technical interjection

But I digress (no one really cares about my oppinions of Mag tests)

I notice (between pie charts) that NOBODY reviewed the
Starboard FUTURA

This board is truly amazing there are tons of reviews from Euro mags if you wanna read them hop over to the Starboards website. But I'm going to give you a bit of a different look.

Where the FUTURA design started

Starboard introduced the Carve years ago it was a revolution in EASE of sailing & comfort that with upgraded design tweaks dominated the freeride board market. Even when the Carve first came out I (coming from a racing background) wanted more. OK, it was comfy & easy but I wanted more "Get up GO!" The Carve was a nice board but not my personal cup of tea. The other mfg's saw the success of the Carve and some tried to copy it. Boards like the Bic Techno 2, Mistral Explosions. They weren't to successful. Others took a different angle of attack, making a much faster freeride boards that were a bit more challenging to sail. Boards like the JP Excite FWS & the Fanatic Shark (in either construction) These models and others like them got more market interest each year.

So Starboards seeing this freeride market changing and after 9yrs of development on the Carves (feeling they've gone as far as that basic design could go) plus a need to consolidate their line. Starboard over 2yrs ago started prototyping & testing boards for the Futura line. They tested them against the Carve & other mfg's Freeride boards but they went a step further they tested the FUTURA against there own Supercross (S-Type) & Speed/Slalom (iSonic) board. The iSonic & the S-type are state of the art raceboards. With the FUTURA Starboard did the AMAZING a freeride board with a setup that is as "comfy" as the old Carves, and all but matches the speed & early planning of dedicated race boards, like the S-Type & iSonic. All I can say is WOW....You are probably thinking I must be hullicinating on Allergy drugs...But I'M NOT! and here is why.

The Magic
Years & Years ago Starboard introduced us all to truly WIDE Boards (GO, STARTS, Carves Formulas ect...) Early planning, handles more sail ranges, ease of use ect... Everyone has jumped on this TRUELY AMMAZING DESIGN DEVELOPEMENT, and we've gone along happily for all these years (and will continue in the future). To get the amazing performance of the FUTURA they have continued with the advantages of width but have now delved into an over looked dimension ...
THICKNESS
I think they cover this best from the SB website
Wind range: 15% slimmer shapes combined with wider widths and low-nose rockerlines boost the Futuras' wind range at both ends: they plane up earlier and effortlessly in lightwinds and offer more control and comfort in highwinds.

Pure speed: the Futuras were benchmarked to beat the S-Types in speed. With concepts brought over from the development of the iSonics, the Futuras are faster with a sweet spot that covers a wider wind range.

Comfort: wider and thinner inherently means a more stable shape, before planing and when moving into the footstraps. The bottom line: it's just easier and more comfortable to get going.

Ride, handling and control: with its lowered centre of gravity, the Futura rider experiences a razor-sharp riding sensation with impeccable control. It's like switching from a truck-driving experience to that of a sports car.

Maneuverability: the team tested side by side two identical Futura 122 prototypes with identical rail shapes, identical bottom shapes and with only the thickness and the width changing: the wider and thinner Futuras respond quicker, faster and with more ease.

Upwind: Increased width makes the Futuras plane upwind with ease, which means more time spent riding free than trying to get back upwind to where you started from.
Summary:
  • Thinner wider shapes with iSonic genetics
  • S-Type speed, Carve comfort, iSonic range: impossible engineering made possible
  • A quiver of two fins is highly recommended to bring out the best of the board
My 2 cents

OK, Those who know me (my size) I'm NOT going to kid you here I have not nor will I claim extensive expertise on 100L and down models ...Yes I've sailed boards this small but so infrequently that it only happens when conditions are such that the National Gaurd is calling for mandatory evacutions of coastal area...yeah I mean it only then!

Over the winter here I've sailed the F111, F122, F144 & 155 in conditions from S Fla to Cali. Sails from 10.5 thru 6m all freeride sails.

Personally when I heard 15% reduced thickness I wasn't stoked, but onward I went. The first thing I noticed that "schlogging" out was no big deal (F111 & 122 on bigger boards it is obviously easy)
Got to the "wind line" and POP right up on a plane no wiggling, no wind up just POP and off I went (nice thing for a guy my size) But I wanted more (remember my Carve oppinion) So pointed my toes Sheeted in and I was going faster than I wanted w/o my feet in the strap. So I scrambled into the straps (set outboard Thanks to Jeff Feehan's suggestion) Figuring this to be a Plane killing action I was mentally prepared to start over...I was pleasantly surprised. Now Big feet (size 13) in straps & I was still planning the FUTURA seemed to be waiting for me to tell it what to do...GO FASTER Sheeting in again feet in the straps and off I went going pretty fast before pushing it to 5th gear (so to speak) I thought I'd look at the board see how it was "trimming out" (Folks DO NOT LOOK AT YOUR BOARD WHILE AT PLANNING SPEED it is a receipe for disaster, Remember I'm a proffessional (cough cough) don't do this at home. I noticed the release point (where the water comes off the rail) was at my front foot. The nose rose comfortablly above the oncoming & side chop. Things seemed fast & comfy. So I decided to push harder and see what this "puppy" could do. So pulling down (note not in) on my backhand extending my front leg and putting a god bit of back foot pressure and WHOOOOSH off we go passing people like a picket fence. I even passed a guy on a jet ski (7.5 Retro & FUTURA 144) who thought he was haul'n _ _ _! He asked me later "... got a motor on that THING?" Now, looking down (remember DO NOT do this at home) the release point is behind my front foot and the nose was still comfortably high (didn't get the feel I was going to stuff it or anything)

Now for the Turn

Most, of the time turning takes time. It is one of the continuing challenges of windsurfing (keeps us coming back...(or at least we tell ourselve such) So I think ... A thin board going blindingly fast me (a THICK GUY) this can't have a good initial out come (I was fully expecting a crash) Sheeted in, Stood up got on the rail and around we went NO PROBLEM...even easy. Hmmmm I thought not bad for a first try but remember I'm a PRO (everytime I write that I laugh) So I went for a wobbly jibe (not keeping pressure on inside rail) Again WOW I planed out with little/no effort. OK, I'm going to put this to the test how about the "Sheet out" then Jibe...yeah you know you do it I see you guys doing it all the time at the bay. And Still comfortable and although the FUTURA did not plane out it came close even with bad technique. So just for giggles I went for a FAST pivot Jibe And it handled that pivot like a wave board...WOW!

I also jumped it with better than satisfactory out come POPPED of the water easy and even in the bigger sizes didn't feel that big in the air (the short time I was there off a chop hop) I'm not going to try to kid anybody I did not attempt any true freestyle (less a few Duck Jibes) but the added width couldn't hurt here.

All I can say is I was more than STOKED with the new FUTURA I wonder if WS MAg just lost the review or what??????

* Water temp is in the mid 40's

* It is serious conditions this time of year I HIGHLY recommend using the 100 degree rule (Air Temp + Water= Safer conditions STILL BE CAREFUL) Ability & Equipment and a bunch of other factors should be considered... in short "BE CAREFUL OUT THERE"

* The Shower is gone. Hotel will not permit it to be rebuilt I suggest brining a sun shower. We SHOULD have water avail to fill sunshowers (Bring the Sunshine (warmth) too!) ONLY No equipment washing permitted.

++ To clear up a rumour We are once again allowed to use the hotel bathrooms. The hotel mgt asked that you come in through the front door and not be wet or sandy (thru their lobby)
