OK, sounds like something some teacher would say. OK I hang around teachers to much I hire them, I work with them, I'm even married to one, and I hated school (if it weren't for Athletics I'm not sure I'd have gone..but that's another story.) You probably guessed that by my grammer & punctuation here...but I digress.

Folks come in my shop and buy windsurfing equipment (thus the name EXTREME WINDSURFING) I love to talk about boards, sails, masts, booms, wet/drysuits. Even nuts & bolts & repairs excite me I LOVE IT! Seeing someone just "Light Up" after using that New ---- the stoke is refueled!

I must admit however that in these rambling discussions I find myself talking about a lot of techniques (windsurfing) Although Equipment is important to enjoy windsurfing. Proper technique & time on the water practicing (even when its not that windy) are critical too.

Time on the water I'll tak about in a later artical.

You'd be surprised how hard most people work at windsurfing. Windsurfing doesn't have to be as hard as your working at it right now! The fastest way to have more fun windsurfing is to learn to do it EASY (the RIGHT WAY) Rigging (board or sail) RIGHT is a primary first step. If you are wondering if it's rigged right just stop by the shop we'l be happy to help.
Also  at Extreme Windsurfing we have an excellent staff of Windsurfing instructors who can/do give intermediate & advanced lesson just like we do hundreds of beginner windsurfing lessons. Call us any time to set up a private lesson. BUT this month MAY we are offering some unique opportunities.

First we are really excited to welcome back Somers Point's (town a couple miles awy from Lakes bay) "prodical son" ANDY BRANT & ABK clinic on May 9 thru 11 Here are ALL the details

* I Still HIGHLY recommend using the 100 degree rule (Air Temp + Water= Safer conditions STILL BE CAREFUL) Ability & Equipment and a bunch of other factors should be considered... but on days with any wind you'll find windsurfers at our launch @ Lakes Bay Keep a "weather Eye out on each other and  "BE CAREFUL OUT THERE"

* The Shower is gone. Hotel will not permit it to be rebuilt I suggest brining a sun shower. We SHOULD have water avail to fill sunshowers (Bring the Sunshine (warmth) too!) ONLY No equipment washing permitted.

Dear Baltimore/Washington area Windsurfer:

This message is to alert you all to a new windsurf website. It is WindsurfResource.com. As the name says, it is a resource for windsurfers, but tailor made for windsurfers in the mid-Atlantic area (Maryland, Northern Virginia, DC area). Having had to go through some hard knocks myself, I thought I would share with you my knowledge so that others will find their progression through the sport less confusing and more organized and smooth. Windsurfing is not a privilege, but a right, and thus I hope that this website will tear down some of the barriers of entering and advancing in the sport.

WindsurfResource.com provides information on 1) windsurf launches of interest to those of MD, DC and NVA providing directions thereto and information about the launch, 2) a glossary providing definitions for common windsurf jargon, 3) a calendar describing what each month and what each season means for the windsurfer in the Baltimore/Washington area, 4) links to other websites of interest to windsurfers and 5) a load of other stuff designed to make your journey through the sport as efficient, coherent and as optimistic as possible.

Therefore, read through the glossary, the calendar, the launch info and the links, and get a leg up on the sport.

Here are some important guidelines. First, when visiting WindsurfResoruce.com. I’ve tested
it with Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 and Netscape Navigator 9 only, so try to use one of these browsers when viewing WindsurfResource.com. Other browsers such as Opera and Mozilla have not been tested.

Second, the future effectiveness of this website largely depends on feedback from you, such
as providing me with information on new launch sites, or other pertinent information that would make a nice addition to WindsurfResource.com. If you want to write to me, send a message to WindsurfResource@.... This includes, but not limited to, launch info in such locals as Assateague, Chincoteague, the lower Potomac, and the Northern neck of VA.

Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Mobile. Try it now.

Extreme Windsurfing's News and Notes

Springs been a little slow coming yeah we had an easy winter but so far this spring we've had some nice days (not real warm just nice). I have a NOSE for spring it tells me the EXACT momment spring arrives around me...That was yesterday at 4:53pm. Exact right? Well let me tell you how IT (my nose works) I was out on a soccer field (doing my thing Coaching that is) with my team getting ready to take on our most serious league rivals. The team had completed the stretching and warm up drills and we were in the middle of some serious tactical points for todays game...When spring came...It hit me like a ton of bricks overcoming my 12hr allergy medicine (which I have to take all the time to live with the familly dogs...I'm pretty sure that was a ploy by my wife to kill me slowly but that is a whole other story) My asst. coaches thought I might not make it (eye stated watering, & uncontrolable sneezing ect...) I'm pretty sure the team (girls) were happy I stop talking because I know they were tired of listening!

To make a long story short I survived (much to my wife's chigrin I think) As I was driving home with the sneezing & blowing it shook my brains enough I SAID HEY IT'S SPRING....TIME TO GO WINDSURFING! So I thought I'd write this newsletter to remind you (w/o the sneezing & blowing I hope) of the same. Let's GO WINDSURFING

I Think the Point Here is EXTREME WINDSURFING OPEN @ LAKES BAY APRIL 12th 10am for the 2008 season!

In this Edition
Something the Magazine Forgot (equipment review)

Things the Magazine test FORGOT
I admit it I read all the board tests (just like most of you) I sorts of focus on the Windsurfing Magazine test & Windsport (the Canadian magazine) These 2 publications could be more different.

WS mag kinda hangs out at a tester's house on the Banana River in Fla plays with some boards has a round table and then we get PIE (charts) If you were on the deck at the shop talking about equipment and some of these (WS Mag testers) interjected into your conversation you'd have to hold back your laughter (that SOME not all) if you knew them as I know them.

Windsport I've seen their compound in Hatteras they are serious. Meassuring, weighing talking to designers testing retesting and best thing of all NO PIE charts. Just the facts (specs) little "I feel" "We Think". Minor amounts of non technical interjection

But I digress (no one really cares about my oppinions of Mag tests)

I notice (between pie charts) that NOBODY reviewed the
Starboard FUTURA

This board is truly amazing there are tons of reviews from Euro mags if you wanna read them hop over to the Starboards website. But I'm going to give you a bit of a different look.

Where the FUTURA design started

Starboard introduced the Carve years ago it was a revolution in EASE of sailing & comfort that with upgraded design tweaks dominated the freeride board market. Even when the Carve first came out I (coming from a racing background) wanted more. OK, it was comfy & easy but I wanted more "Get up GO!" The Carve was a nice board but not my personal cup of tea. The other mfg's saw the success of the Carve and some tried to copy it. Boards like the Bic Techno 2, Mistral Explosions. They weren't to successful. Others took a different angle of attack, making a much faster freeride boards that were a bit more challenging to sail. Boards like the JP Excite FWS & the Fanatic Shark (in either construction) These models and others like them got more market interest each year.

So Starboards seeing this freeride market changing and after 9yrs of development on the Carves (feeling they've gone as far as that basic design could go) plus a need to consolidate their line. Starboard over 2yrs ago started prototyping & testing boards for the Futura line. They tested them against the Carve & other mfg's Freeride boards but they went a step further they tested the FUTURA against there own Supercross (S-Type) & Speed/Slalom (iSonic) board. The iSonic & the S-type are state of the art raceboards. With the FUTURA Starboard did the AMAZING a freeride board with a setup that is as "comfy" as the old Carves, and all but matches the speed & early planning of dedicated race boards, like the S-Type & iSonic. All I can say is WOW....You are probably thinking I must be hullicinating on Allergy drugs...But I'M NOT! and here is why.

The Magic
Years & Years ago Starboard introduced us all to truly WIDE Boards (GO, STARTS, Carves Formulas ect...) Early planning, handles more sail ranges, ease of use ect... Everyone has jumped on this TRUELY AMMAZING DESIGN DEVELOPEMENT, and we've gone along happily for all these years (and will continue in the future). To get the amazing performance of the FUTURA they have continued with the advantages of width but have now delved into an over looked dimension ...
THICKNESS
I think they cover this best from the SB website
Wind range: 15% slimmer shapes combined with wider widths and low-nose rockerlines boost the Futuras' wind range at both ends: they plane up earlier and effortlessly in lightwinds and offer more control and comfort in highwinds.

Pure speed: the Futuras were benchmarked to beat the S-Types in speed. With concepts brought over from the development of the iSonics, the Futuras are faster with a sweet spot that covers a wider wind range.

Comfort: wider and thinner inherently means a more stable shape, before planing and when moving into the footstraps. The bottom line: it's just easier and more comfortable to get going.

Ride, handling and control: with its lowered centre of gravity, the Futura rider experiences a razor-sharp riding sensation with impeccable control. It's like switching from a truck-driving experience to that of a sports car.

Maneuverability: the team tested side by side two identical Futura 122 prototypes with identical rail shapes, identical bottom shapes and with only the thickness and the width changing: the wider and thinner Futuras respond quicker, faster and with more ease.

Upwind: Increased width makes the Futuras plane upwind with ease, which means more time spent riding free than trying to get back upwind to where you started from.
Summary:
  • Thinner wider shapes with iSonic genetics
  • S-Type speed, Carve comfort, iSonic range: impossible engineering made possible
  • A quiver of two fins is highly recommended to bring out the best of the board
My 2 cents

OK, Those who know me (my size) I'm NOT going to kid you here I have not nor will I claim extensive expertise on 100L and down models ...Yes I've sailed boards this small but so infrequently that it only happens when conditions are such that the National Gaurd is calling for mandatory evacutions of coastal area...yeah I mean it only then!

Over the winter here I've sailed the F111, F122, F144 & 155 in conditions from S Fla to Cali. Sails from 10.5 thru 6m all freeride sails.

Personally when I heard 15% reduced thickness I wasn't stoked, but onward I went. The first thing I noticed that "schlogging" out was no big deal (F111 & 122 on bigger boards it is obviously easy)
Got to the "wind line" and POP right up on a plane no wiggling, no wind up just POP and off I went (nice thing for a guy my size) But I wanted more (remember my Carve oppinion) So pointed my toes Sheeted in and I was going faster than I wanted w/o my feet in the strap. So I scrambled into the straps (set outboard Thanks to Jeff Feehan's suggestion) Figuring this to be a Plane killing action I was mentally prepared to start over...I was pleasantly surprised. Now Big feet (size 13) in straps & I was still planning the FUTURA seemed to be waiting for me to tell it what to do...GO FASTER Sheeting in again feet in the straps and off I went going pretty fast before pushing it to 5th gear (so to speak) I thought I'd look at the board see how it was "trimming out" (Folks DO NOT LOOK AT YOUR BOARD WHILE AT PLANNING SPEED it is a receipe for disaster, Remember I'm a proffessional (cough cough) don't do this at home. I noticed the release point (where the water comes off the rail) was at my front foot. The nose rose comfortablly above the oncoming & side chop. Things seemed fast & comfy. So I decided to push harder and see what this "puppy" could do. So pulling down (note not in) on my backhand extending my front leg and putting a god bit of back foot pressure and WHOOOOSH off we go passing people like a picket fence. I even passed a guy on a jet ski (7.5 Retro & FUTURA 144) who thought he was haul'n _ _ _! He asked me later "... got a motor on that THING?" Now, looking down (remember DO NOT do this at home) the release point is behind my front foot and the nose was still comfortably high (didn't get the feel I was going to stuff it or anything)

Now for the Turn

Most, of the time turning takes time. It is one of the continuing challenges of windsurfing (keeps us coming back...(or at least we tell ourselve such) So I think ... A thin board going blindingly fast me (a THICK GUY) this can't have a good initial out come (I was fully expecting a crash) Sheeted in, Stood up got on the rail and around we went NO PROBLEM...even easy. Hmmmm I thought not bad for a first try but remember I'm a PRO (everytime I write that I laugh) So I went for a wobbly jibe (not keeping pressure on inside rail) Again WOW I planed out with little/no effort. OK, I'm going to put this to the test how about the "Sheet out" then Jibe...yeah you know you do it I see you guys doing it all the time at the bay. And Still comfortable and although the FUTURA did not plane out it came close even with bad technique. So just for giggles I went for a FAST pivot Jibe And it handled that pivot like a wave board...WOW!

I also jumped it with better than satisfactory out come POPPED of the water easy and even in the bigger sizes didn't feel that big in the air (the short time I was there off a chop hop) I'm not going to try to kid anybody I did not attempt any true freestyle (less a few Duck Jibes) but the added width couldn't hurt here.

All I can say is I was more than STOKED with the new FUTURA I wonder if WS MAg just lost the review or what??????

FRESH OFF THE PRESS
WS Mag just completed a review of the FUTURA I guess they hacked into my email here (only kidding) Read mine & theirs (W/GRAIN OF SALT) come by the shop & check them out we "Should" have some demos soon too!

All I can say is Check out 2008 equipment it REALLY IS WORTH IT!

I think your freind there in DC is about 10years behind in info.

I agree with his point that back in the early 90's the focus of the ws industry was high wind and waves. When we first started Extreme Windsurfing here at Lakes Bay (Atlantic City NJ) There was a "group" who who "If I can't plane with my 6M or less I won't sail" The more enlightened use to refer to this crowd as "Fence Monkeys" as they spent more time talking than sailing. Since Extreme Windsurfing started (full time) the Spring of '94. We at this time introduced (to the broad base of SNJ sailors) to wider boards bigger sails (we use to think of 7.5's as BIG) Over that summer and the successive seasons more and more sailors were out sailing (planning) These windsurfers use to get "pleasure" of "luring" the 6M & under sailors out because these lesser experinced (in yrs in the sport) were out planning. They (6M & under crowd) believed if these new sailors could do it Why not them.

So what happened in the long run most of the "Old School" 6M and under converted to take advantage of the newer easier to sail planed early/faster. a very small minority just gave up really hating getting "lured out" and a small minority went over to kites. (interesting these same folks said it wasn't fun having to deal with a sail 6M but they live on 12M & BIGGER) Extreme Windsurfing is teaching hundreds of lessons, running event (although MUCH to my dismay the racing scene here in NJ is gone)

So why is my view different than your buddy on the Potomac? Well, it comes down to a different business model. Extreme Windsurfing stays current (nay I say Leading edge helping with various prototypes of modern freeride boards & lately SUP's) we spend most of our advertising budget getting new windsurfers. We have a certified instruction and we work on having national clinic keeping our teaching perspective current Lastly, we came into windsurfing past it's Boom" We KNOW we have to work for EVERY SALE. We work at it with current product knowledge, fair & accurate application of what will work for the customer (weather we have it in stock or not) we (being on the beach where "everyone" sails) can't "hide" from our recommendation If what we recommend doesn't work we would hear about it along with ALL our prospective customers (sailors on our beach) and it wouldn't be long before we were a has been.

Windsurfing here at Lakes Bay & Extreme Windsurfing continues to grow we are starting our 15 yr. I'm still REALLY STOKED ON WINDSURFING

Jim, I just had an interesting conversation with someone who used to be in the windsurf business and pulled out around year 2000. His name is George Stevens, and he runs Belle Haven Marina on the Potomac river just a couple of miles downstream from Washington, DC. He used to rent windsurf equipment at his site, give windsurf lessons, and host races on Thursday evenings. He said back in the 80s and 90s, about 50 people would show up and participate in these races, clogging his parking lot.
He pulled out of windsurfing around year 2000. I asked him why the sport declined. He said that in the late 90s and around 2000, manufacturers of windsurf gear stopped making boards for beginners and focused their attention on the high end windsurf jock. They started making the wider planing board, which he said was expensive. He told me that the manufacturers did not continue to make boards and equipment that catered to beginners. He told me that 1) beginners started having difficulty finding beginner gear at low prices, 2) were turned off at the daunting prospects that they would have to invest thousands of dollars to get into and enjoy the sport, and 3) felt that the gear market catered only to the jocks in the footstraps and not to encouraging beginners to have a good time on beginner boards so that beginners could get better. George felt that windsurf equipment manufacturers in the years about the year 2000 discouraged beginners from practicing and enjoying the sport. As a result, George felt that this discouragement of beginners ended up hurting the manufacturers in the long run as they lost most of their potential future customers.
Do you agree with George regarding the cause of the decline of the sport since 1990? Or do you suspect thaere may be other contributing factors at work here?

Extreme Windsurfing's News and Notes

Welcome to WINTER here on a snowy day here in PA, I finally got my life to slow down enough to write Extreme's Mid winter Newsletter. I hope this finds everyone in good health and enjoying the weather where ever you are. Lots of new stuff to talk about but I'll try to keep it as breif as I can. There just a lot of fun stuff I can hardly decide were to start . So I'll just get to it!

In this Edition
Overview of what's new in windsurfing equipment
SUP NEWS (I've been restrained for awhile there's just alot of cool stuff)
Event Schedule (new stuff here too!)
Something I never Do (Videos Worth Having)

I'll keep it to these for now

May 9 - 11 ABK Returns to Lakes Bay GREAT opportunity to tune up for the season

May 17th SPRING SWAP MEET Starts 10am to ????

There are lots more in the works (Sailworks & Starboard Demo (late may) SUP Demo Tour, Beach party ect...)

News in Windsurfing

I'm really excited about the new stuff for 2008...I MEAN IT! The sports been on the right track for several years now Boards which are easier to sail (and in 2008 add faster & EASIER). Sails that don't take a doctorate in physics to assemble or use while still being high performance. Masts & booms lighter stiffer stronger and even more suited to the sails. Harnesses, Wet/Drysuits are keeping pace too. I'm just going to hit the highlights in each catagory but there is A LOT more to say Feel free to call (484) 515 5758 or email me I'm TOTALLY STOKED on 2008 Windsurfing!

Boards
It's been done fast freeride boards that are really easy to sail. The Starboard FUTURA is leading the way with the FUTURA's reduced thickness & wider width makes this board super controlable at speed but wide and stable for balance & early planning.BTW Did I mention Starboards have COME DOWN IN PRICE Fanatic's CAD design has taken board refinement to a new level. Designs like the Sharks GPS speed tested as THE FASTEST Freeride board (Shark 145 45KNOTS!) The Fanatic Hawk is an amazing blend of speed, control one of the most popular boards at Lakes Bay and still very reasonably priced. Last but in no way least JP now offers the Excite designs in a PRO Edition (there is no lighter/stiffer construction on the market) & the JP Freestyle waves are some of the most comfortable medium to highwind boards around.

I'LL GET INTO SUP (Stand UP Paddle Boards) LATER BUT SUFFICE TO SAY THESE ARE THE BEST ALL AROUND BOARDS. If I were stuck on a deserted island with one board/rig a Starboard SUP, 5.5 rig, Paddle & a fishing rod would keep me happy & healthy a LOOOONG time!
Sails
WOW, there are tons to talk about but the most interesting is the new Sailworks Retro's the cut out clew makes these bench mark freeride sails easier to handle in the bigger sizes (7M on up) The Retro has a deeper draft which improves its lowend. The Sailworks Huckers are still leading the way in the B&J type conditions. They seem to have more power per square meter and less range than the Retro. Ezzy Sails haven't been idle the SE wave which has been the bench mark of (Real World) wave sails the power & range are still evident but they have tweaked to give it a softer feel not to mention the option of a tack pulley or a D-Ring for those who prefer a grommet. The Freeride has an improved rotation & lighter weight. While still holding tremedous power thru increased draft. This is the sail that finally rivals the Sailworks Retro as THE Freeride sail. Ezzy is offering a fine kids quiver (2 sails, mast, boom extension & UJ) for under $275. Don't make your kids struggle!
Finally Ezzy is now offering the Zephyr a 7.5 sail (no cam) that has the power of a 9M. This is an area several mfg are working on (Severne, Maui Sails, Aerotech) This has been the "Holy Grail" of sail design.
I could go on & On the Severne Gator (no cam freeride sail), Maui Sails MS-2 (lightest Rec Cam sail) Gaastra, Aerotech but I'll save those for latter.

Masts, Booms, Accessories

Suffice to say masts are getting even more universal with sail designs being less mast specific (exception are Specialty sails like race sails) RDM (Skinny) masts are becoming more the norm thus worth looking into.
HPL is offering a new boom confiruration & New stiffer (retro fitable) Front end. Chinook is offering its Triple Clamp (State of the art Freeride boom) booms both Aluminum & Carbon at better prices
Harnesses Dakine continues to set th mark wit its XT Seat (The MOST versitile seat harness around) The T-3 Waist harness is the benchmark of comfort , support & mobility. The Dakine Impact harness works great as not only a Kite (KS & Windsurfing harness but is a GREAT Option for those who must sail with a life jacket as it is integrated into this harness! Prolimits Type T is really popular & the Prolimits Felix is the only true WS/KS cross over harness.
In the wetsuit.Drysuit realm we are really happy with the Ocean Rodeo Pyro Pro & Surf. GREAT mobility, all the warmth you need any time of year. PLUS Fully repairable almost eliminates wearing out!  Drysuits reduce the need for numerous wetsuits, but if you feel you just are windsurfing, kitesurfing, surf, SUP unless you are WET. Neil Pryde, Prolimits are making some of the best suits for these sports.

All I can say is Check out 2008 equipment it REALLY IS WORTH IT!

SUP ADVENTURES

Ok, by now everyone know's I'm totally STOKED with the SUP. Surfing them, Paddling, Sailing (surf & otherwise) Fishing you name it these things do it. Although I've used/tested just about everything I gotta say the Starboard SUP's are still hands down the best PLUS They are THE ONLY MFG TO OFFER A FULL 1 YEAR WARRANTY ON CONSTRUCTION. I'm very familar with just about all other mfg and there are some good designs Naish, Amondson, Mistral, Bic, Jimmy Lewis, SO, Surftech and various custom builders.

So a new adventure on my SUP.
Since I'm "stuck" here in Pa (soccer coaching & Life) and this falls hurricane season wasn't as active wave wise I was kinda "Jonesing" for some water time. I noticed that the Lehigh River (a Whitewater river in places) runs a couple hundred yards from my soccer practice field & letting my mind wonder I remembered that a coaching contemporary (friend) of mine has a similiar set up in the next town down stream. I called him up his first response was "it's a little late to scout us since you just beat us" Then he asked "you gonna run the river on a SURFBOARD?...YOU ARE NUTS!" Anyway after some more colorful adjectives he agreed if I "washed up" down by his field he'd give me a ride to the hospital or back to my van.
Not being one to think things out ,I kinda jumped on this a bit quick. Since the closest to drowning I ever came to was on this river & also forgoing the flow rate I got a wetsuit, SUP, Paddle and fishing pole (thought I'd catch a few on the way...WHAT WAS I THINK.. I don't know) went back to get my life jacket (rule of PA Fish Comm turned out to be a REAL good idea for this adventure)
So I put in "testing the waters" so to speak found that I could easily paddle up and across stream in the big calm Eddy by my soccer field. I was pretty sure I had this knocked (yeah I got knocked but that is later) I even caught a few bass in the eddy. Yeah I'm ready for whitewater I think....
Whitewater, The river started to pick up speed as I headed down stream to my destination. The First "Rifle" (not exactly a whitewater shute) I line it up facing down stream (not a good idea) I got "pushed into the "Rifle" and I hit a rock broke off my center fin (Starboards come with FCS Thruters (3 fin) setup) Noticing it was a bit "tippier" I decide it was to difficult to walk back up and abort this mission. I continued. (CRITICAL mistake)
Falling in a bit more due to the loss of the rear fin I'm headed to some serious whitewater. Well, to make a long story shorter I got my A-- beat falling smacking my head on rocks, getting my leash tangled in rocks. I did what we all do I decided I had to go back and run this until I figured it out...I messed in this shute for I don't know how long but after I ran it the fourth time I learned a lot (I'll sumerize this later) and did it with some style even setup and rode a river wave. I was happy I thought I got this river knocked but... I didn't estimate how much daylight I had or how long it would take me to float this not mind the time I took fooling around. Recognizing this oversight I decided to get moving. I got over some Rifes and Stood up through some whitewater but in the more serious whitewater I sat/knealt down reduced the falling on my head and thus speeded me on my way. I got myself to my friends soccer field (not easy to find in thelate fall darkness. So I walk up to the Highschool and wondering around in my wetsuit I find my buddy who "quickly hustled " me out (to avoid embarrassment) Riding back the 6 miles I leaned my head back on his new trucks appolstery and left a lasting memory (a 3/4" blood stain from my head) Luckly his son showed me a way to get it out with seltzer water...how'd he (a HS Junior) know that?

What I learned about running rivers on SUP's
Planning wise
WOW! Go with someone although the solitude had it's own beauty
Plan your trip better (Flow rates/distance)
Only plan on going down stream as far as you can walk back (for your first trip)
Don't run rapids blind (w/o checking them out first)
Equipment wise
Forget the fishing rod Whitewater is serious
Bring a drypak (extra fins, cell phone)
WEAR A LIFE JACKET (I did) & a HELMET (I won't forget again)
Wear a full suit & booties no matter the water temp to protect from abrasions
Get a blade guard (We have C4's $20) avoids chips from rocks
Get a Paddle Grip (cold water made the smooth shaft slippery you lean on your paddle a lot)
The 12'6" Starboard was fine

Ok, will I do it again? ... No & yes. Traveling such a long distance was really tiring not to mention dangerous due to my light constraint. Alone could be a problem too. (this is the NO side) I will (in the spring pending soccer coaching responsibilities) but I'll just run one chute (rapids) over & Over till I get it wired. There are lots of fun stuff particularly standing waves and this part (the re- running) of the whitewater river experience was REALLY fun.

I've experience waves, winds in various oceans all over the world, but I'm gonna give running water a lot more respect in the future. They are bigger (more powerful) than they look!

Another SUP Experience

In January while I was in San Deigo surfing/SUP with my son I went to the ASR show. This is where EVERYONE had their new boards out. In that week at the BIG SUP spot (Cardiff by the Sea) in North County SD. We surfed some of the new products from C4 (both paddles & boards) & Starboard.

Here are some key ideas pertinate to SUP's as I see them.
** STARBOARDS is the ONLY MFG who offers a full 1 yr warranty on SUP boards. Says something for their quality!
** 30" wide (or very close to it) is the most key/versitile dimension
** The Fish Design is more viable as a pure surf SUP again the key dimension is 30" wide
** SUP's are getting shorter and wider (like windsurfers just not THAT SHORT (or wide)
** The overall marketing plan for SUP (ALL MFG's feel this way) is not to "over tech" these boards (like has been done in windsurfing in the past) They work great, tweaks here and there keep it affordable (BTW Starboards DROPPED in price...interesting)
** Thrusters Fin configurations are still the best. Though there are some loyal single fins.  Quads & Bonzers (5 fins) seem sluggish rail to rail
** Paddles there is a lot of action trying to get something to work as well as the C4 Carbon paddle at a cheaper price. Fiberglass, various alloys, all kinds of stuff.  As of right now C4 has the lightest, most well made carbon paddles, and they are putting the most effort into finding a Better (cheaper) way. Flex patterns are being experimented with.
** Accesories, C4 Paddle Grips really help alot not to mention making finding ones paddle in the after math of a wipeout easier. Blade guards aren't bad; doesn't add any noticeable weight and definitely protects the blade. THE MULE SUP wheeled carrier for beach or road makes moving them a breeze. Something we lamented last year!

BTW: I still think the SUP (with paddle, and rig) is the most versitile and fun beach toy around just take it to any beach and you'll have the tool to enjoy whatever conditions are there.

So if you are thinking of getting into the fun here is a limited time deal

Mistral Pacifico (11'4" X30 wide)
             Fin, Paddle & Leash
PLUS an SUP MULE (wheeled carrier for beach & Road)
"Everything you need to get started"
$999 plus shipping

I Almost Never Do This

As with all of us I just don't have time, between Family obligations, Work, Coaching I just don't "check out all the new (old for that matter) videos. This year was different for some reason (I didn't find the magical 25+ hr day) I have even more stuff on my plate this winter than last. All I can think of is that my college age son keeps emailing me trailers or producers (Jace Panibianco) showed up at my house while Roger Jackson & I were unpacking boards (trying to get away to go bass fishing) but whatever it was I gotta say I've been missing out Here is what Brian Caserio (who knows about movies and can sail with the best of them) about
THE WINDSURFING MOVIE
This is a video that everyone who used to windsurf back in the Eighties should have in their library. This is a video that everyone who used to windsurf back in the Nineties should have in their library. This is a video that everyone who currently windsurfs should have in their library. This is a video that everyone who cares even a little about windsurfing should have in their library, even if they don't windsurf. If you want this kind of quality then you should buy this video. That's what I thought about The Windsurfing Movie.
Cost$25

Another one I really like is Ocean Flow I think its because it is a book (shows surfers can/will read) & a Video from Scott McKercher (Starboards/Severne Sails)
Book & DVD
Cost $49

Instructionally Speaking
The Peter Hart (near and dear to our hearts (no pun intended) as he stops by as he's married to a local girl) Serious About Wave (2 DVDS) Cost $39 Faster Cost $27  There are no more definitive DVD's on the topics. Serious About Waves has great vaction Video & freestyle tricks too.

Last but not least I HAVE TO mention C4's How To Stand Up Paddle Surf Vol 1 & Vol 2 Cost $21 EACH These are the difinitive HOW TO on the latest techniques and some cool tricks too. If you are thinking about it or doing it (thus teaching your buddies) This is not only fun but informative

I have an Obrien board with retractable centerboard, about 12 feet long.
Can you tell me some history on the board, date of manufacture, ? liters,
best size sails to use, what the core is made of, what are best conditions
to use in, etc. I have had some great sailing on it! I also snapped the
centerboard but was able to replace it with a perfectly fitting Allgaier
daggerboard from THE HOUSE in MN.

Just a Quick Note

It has been a beautiful fall (weather wise) well it's pretty much a continuation
of summer except no wind but some nice waves (like always in the fall...I've
missed the bulk of them) but things look like there is a change coming a big
cold front moving down out of Canada could bring some wind later in the week
...let's hope it holds for the weekend.

Speaking of weekends we kinda winding down at Lakes bay this has been our
"Traditional" closing weekend (2nd weekend in Oct.) So we'll be at the shop Sat
& Sunday. Pending weather I'm looking at closing the beach shop up around the
20th or 21st

I gotta say starting my 15th year, wind or no wind one of the prettiest places
to spend a day is at our beach at Lakes bay. Sunrises and sunsets are
spectacular, and taking in the bay activities Birds, fish, other boating
activities can fill a whole day, not to mention Lakes bay is the place the
nicest group of windsurfers hang out and sail. Just being around such a great
place with fun folks is a real joy wind or no wind. Fall, is the prettiest time.
Stop by and say HI!

Goings On

New for 2008 (there will be others in Fancier publications)These are just my
oppinions w/o hype

Ezzy sails

The SE Wave & Freeride are adusting with more outhaul as opposed to just by DH.
So in 2008 you'll be able to get the "old feel" of a flatter profile While still
having the option of the NEW more fuller design. Kinda neat the best of both
worlds a new design w/o compromises. The FREERIDE is the most powerful no cam
freeride sail.
The Infinity is still the traditional 2 cam sail but in light & SUPER DURABLE
Ezzy construction they are famous for!

Sailworks

Retro's (Bench mark of no cam freeride sails) have a BIG change adding a
negetive clew (in other words the sail projects beyond the end of the boom) This
will make handling even better to go along with the great speed the Retro is
famous for. I'm really excited about this sail in 2008!

The Hucker was a great sail line in 2007 here at Lakes bay. It brings back the
feel of the B&J sails (Fast, Jumping) The 6.6 & the 5.6 are the most applicable
to our sailing conditions. Real fun and fit nicely in a quiver of Retro's (mast
tolerant and rangey sail) for a different feel
(Variations on the theme of retro's)

The NX is the most overlooked race sail fast light. The Revolution is a true
wave sail.

I could go on & on (just contact me if you want more details) We have GREAT
sails from Severne (Gators no cam freeride sails are still excellent), Maui
Sails (Great race sails and the MS2 a 2 cam recreational race sail) Gaastra,
Neil Pryde, North & Aerotech.

I'll hit boards in my next edition. Also some outstanding stuff in masts & booms
this year. Lots of new stuff to play with over the winter.

We don't have any events on the agenda for the rest of the year, but we'll have
the 2008 schedule up right after the holidays (Early January) But we have some
killer deals RIGHT NOW

Sailworks Severne and Ezzy left overs up to 30% off

JP Freestyle Wave 93 FWS $999
Starboard Carve 101 Technora $899

Bic Techno 2 148L $399
AHD Ftype 75 (125L)$499
Mistral Syncro 90 $399

Plus tons of Closeouts from Starboards ('04, '05, '06 & 07's)
                                            Fanatics (These boards are finally
getting the respect they have deserved for YEARS!)
Mistral, F2, Bic. You name it we have
a great deal on it.

looking forward to seeing everyone before it gets to cold!

Hey guys, sorry for hijacking your email group but I thought you may
be interested in some of the gear I'm selling. I'm getting out of the
sport while I'm in the DC area. This gear was all bought in Hood
River, Oregon so that may explain the tiny sizes. All prices are /best
offer. High quality pictures here:
http://www.pbase.com/mrelliottgould/windsurfinggearforsale

~75L Logos Glass board. It's well used but all the cracks have been
sealed so it doesn't leak. I don't know too much about its history but
I loved the board. I recently added some new straps on it. - $200
Boom – it's light, don't know all the high tech talk, but I've put a
3.1 up to a 5.2 on it. Don't think it will rig over a 5.2. The grip is
worn but definitely usable condition. - $125
3.1m Hot Sails Maui – it's old but in good condition. I've never
actually used it but it's a great sail for teaching kids / friends on. $50
3.7m 2002 Naish Outlaw – I bought it used from Jon Malmberg, a Naish
rep who had used it 10 times. I put another 10 or so session on it.
It's in great shape and wow, I love that sail. $125.
3.7 & board in action:
http://k47.pbase.com/v3/33/442833/2/47792949.Picture707.jpg
4.2m Northwave – it's also old but in good condition. I spent the most
sessions on this sail while I was in the Hood. Good sail! $75
4.7m NorthSail Dr X. This was by far my favorite sail of the 4.
Unfortunately I put a 1 foot rip in it earlier this year with my body.
Patch it up and you got a great sail! $75

430 Powerex Skinny mast. I bought it down in Hatteras, used it twice
since. $125 (I bought this one for a 5.2 which isn't listed above)

400 Mast. I was surprised it lasted me the summer without breaking. I
guess it's pretty durable! $50 (fyi all 4 sails above rig on this mast
no problem)

Skinny mast extension. Great condition. $35

Non-Skinny mast extension (2) - Silver one was used by Dale Cook and
even has his phone number on it… ladies may be interested in this one.
$20 each.

Mast base / foot combo. - $15

All,
I was unable to make it to the East of Maui swap last weekend.  I'm looking for the smallest sail that fits on a 460 mast as well as a boom.

I want to use the equipment to complete a rig that I can leave at my parents lake house. It will only get used a couple times a year by beginner friends and family, so I don't want to spend a lot.

If anyone has old equipment they want to get rid of, please keep me in mind.

Thank you,

Terry

Tomorrow (Sunday, Sept 24 8:00-2:00) is the fall gear swap at East of Maui
in Annapolis. With the East Coast Forumla Championships in town this
weekend, there should probably be a pretty good turnout.

By far the best I have found is Bonaire. Shallow water and great winds.
No waves But they also have a season too. Not too good in Jan Feb.
But check the website for Bonaire. Better than Aruba and Margarita.
Aruba has a wind shadow problem due to big hotels.

Also Cape Hatteras is a top windsurfing spot. (You can do wave sailing
here too) But they have much shallow water on the sound. Winds are very
good in April, May and October. Other months as well, but these are
the best, when it is not too cold.

Sign up for Iwindsurf.com and get fairly good five day forecasts for all
the good spots in US.

Hello all,

I am a 16 year old Baltimore Resident who is a lifelong sailor. I race
Lasers, as well as big boats. Actually, I guess I race on anything I
can get my hands on.

My mom recently moved to North Carolina, and there is unfortunately
not enough water to sail a laser :(. I am therefore trying to get into
windsurfing, but having only done it once, on a friend of mine's
board, I don't know where to start. I am looking into buying a board
but dont know what to look for or how much I should expect to pay.
Please help.

Many thanks in advance,

Corey Mitchell

Announcing the production of the 2005 PacificWindsurf Windsurf
Calendars!

Ever since the primary windsurfing calendar was discontinued about
two years ago
I've been looking to fill the void ... Where oh where would I find
those great
tropical windsurfing photos to grace my cube wall during the long
winter
months?

Now I'm happy to announce the release of a new windsurfing calendar
featuring
hot action shots from the Diamond Head Team windsurfers in Honolulu.
Most of
the shots are taken right off glorious Diamond Head. We've also
worked
together with several woman models who in fact windsurf, albeit at an
intermediate level. Toni Leigh lives in LA, but has completed a
photo shoot in
Hawaii. The other two models are located in the Seattle / Puget
Sound region.
There are two different versions of this calendar. The Toni Leigh
version is
primarily of Toni Leigh and features various shots of her in
windsurfing
settings. The PacificWindsurf / Diamond Head Team version features
about 75%
windsurf action shots, and 25% windsurf models in windsurf settings.
While the
Toni Leigh version is somewhat exotic, the PacificWindsurf version is
particularly appropriate for a family or office environment. Both
calendars
promise to brighten up your winters!

At this point the price for these calendars is $19.99. We are unsure
of the
demand for these products and this project continues to grow. The
PacificWindsurf.com web site through which these calendars will be
sold is
generally a non-profit, hobby web site, and this is the first
commercial
venture to be seriously undertaken through the site. Generally
considering the
costs incurred so far including such expenses as hosting, software
and
development time, the site has been a net cost to run and maintain.
I can tell
you that the site is a sponsor of the 2004 Canadian National Windsurf
Championships, and has consistently sought to promote windsurfing
interests and
causes world-wide.

Please consider these calendars as you seek to adorn your home or
office walls
and gift packages in the coming months. The calendars will be
available to
ship in November.

To order your copy or learn further details, visit
www.PacificWindsurf.com or more specifically
http://www.pacificwindsurf.com/shop/calendars.htm .

If you would merely like to
reserve a calendar but not actually order one until November, please
e-mail info@... and indicate the version and number
of copies which
you are interested in.

Thank you and happy sailing!
