Hi Del,

I was really just sarcastically complaining about the first guy spamming the
group... much like that last guy who was promoting online betting. Granted,
it's a little bit different since he's trying to sell windsurfing related
materials. I noticed that the same guy tried to spam the SoMdWindsurf Yahoo
group with the same post.. I deleted it.

Thanks for the info on the books though.

Anyone looking for on the water instruction is welcome to join us for free

Free to good home: some sails that don't work for me, and I need my
garage back.
Gun 6.8 , 2 cam, about 1995-6. This one should be a great sail for
this area but has a minor manufacturing flaw with the cams (I think a
part sewn in backward) that is correctable with a few hours work.
Never used.
Bic 8, 3 cams - big stiff race sail, about 1993-4?, excellent for a
long board like a One-Design.

Brian Collis mentioned "The Windsurfing Bible". Some additional materials
are:

"Start Windsurfing Right" from US Sailing Association (www.uusailing.org)
which can be found in or ordered from bookstores or windsurfing dealers for
$15.95. I have a copy of the second edition which was published in 2001. It
is well written with lots of illustrations.

In used book stores you might find "A Beginners Guide to Zen and the Art of
Windsurfing" by Frank Fox which was published in 1985. It is humorous, has
lots of information and illustrations.

One instructional guide on the internet that I've found useful is "The 10-Step
Guide to Windsurfing"
(http://ist-socrates.berkeley.edu/~wprinz/windsurfing/windindex.html) written
by Bill Prinzmetal of the Cal Sailing Club. One of the easiest ways to get to
that guide is typing in the title with quote marks on any search engine.

____________________________________

Mid-Atlantic windsurfers. BABA (Baltimore Area Boardsailing
Association) has several openings in the Petra Kanz shortboard
clinic and one place in the freestyle clinic still available. Give
us a call (see below).

Petra Kanz clinics

Following on the successes of last years Petra Kanz clinics, in 2002
BABA will offer Petra's Intermediate Shortboard Clinic June 29/30 at
the Gunpowder and a Beginning Freestyle Clinic July 27/28. BABA
foregoes the twenty- percent sponsorship fee on Petra's clinics that
are priced at $220 when held at a club's home site. So the cost to
BABA members is an attractive $176. (BABA dues are only $20 a year
for the whole family. You still save!)

- Intermediate shortboard techniques – Gunpowder Falls State Park,
Chase, Maryland

Because we cannot count on perfect wind conditions, the curriculum
will be somewhat wind dependent. The targeted ability levels planned
for each clinic, however, will assure that no matter what wind we
have, the instruction will prove valuable. Petra has provided the
following summary of clinic content.

Shortboard (light wind conditions): uphaul, luffing drills, nose
sinking drills leading up to shortboard tacks, pivot jibes, possibly
backwinding and lee side techniques for the more advanced,
beachstarts fin first, clew first, sailchi.

Shortboard (heavy wind conditions): water starts, fin first, clew
first, sailchi, planing tacks, planing step jibes, duck jibes.

Beginning Freestyle Clinic – Gunpowder Falls State Park, Chase,
Maryland

Petra was the women's 2001 freestyle champion at the prestigious
King of the Cape competition in New England and is a uniquely
qualified freestyle instructor. She says that learning freestyle
first means "Debunking the myth that `freestyle' is a senseless
accumulation of show off tricks that only 0.5% of the windsurfing
population is able to do, and secondly, that it has nothing to do
with `normal' sailing skills."

The clinic starts with solid clew first, fin first and backwind
sailing (beach starts and waterstarts). From there it works into
helicopter tacks and body sail 360s. Petra works from successes on
these skills into more advanced tricks, all interspersed with lots
of sail-chi and how everything applies to everyday sailing. And the
beauty of a freestyle clinic is that it requires next to no wind!

To register for any of these great clinics, call Chuck at 410 592-
7681 or e-mail <cschnee@...>.

Hi folks
I'm new to this list and hope to make good friends. I'll be moving from Brazil to Reston, and first thing, I searched the web for good windsurfing spots and found the web page Ross made.
I should be moving in the beginning of May but cant wait to put the board in the water!
Is there any club or something like that where windsurfers get together for a beer and a chat? What would be the best surfing area if one lives in Reston?
Thanks and nice to meet you

You think you're late getting into this discussion.....look at me!

The law is in the annotated code in maryland. It says that
windsurfers have to wear a PFD or a harness. It's been a while but I
know that a wetsuit fits in there somewhere too. The rules used to be
posted on the windsurfing beach at Sandy Point State Park.

I've never gotten a citation, but the Coast Guard "pulled me over" on
the St Mary's River and gave me a ration of stuff for not wearing a
PFD. I was wearing a seat harness though. I quoted the MD law and we
went round and round until they gave up and left. I need to check the
law again in case I get into one of those situations again.

Mark,

I don't think anyone has replied to your inquiry yet,
so I'll put in my two cents.

There really is alot of good used equipment out there.
I should know, I own most of it......
And I'll sell it really cheap----

: ^ )

That being said, for the bay sailing over here that you'll
be doing, I think that you'd be better served buying good
NEW equipment. The difference between learning on an
old Fanatic Fox or Mistral one design longboard
and the new wide boards is amazing. My brother learned
in an 1/2 hour on a Starboard Start--I couldn't believe it--

As a matter of fact, I was a little resentful that he and my
whippersnapper nephew didn't have to go through all the
hardship that I went through so long ago!

"When I was your age, I had to walk twenty miles through ten
feet of snow in my BARE feet to learn to windsurf"

So at any rate, for the price it really would be hard to go wrong with
Starboard Start, as matter of fact, it's a board that you could
always
keep in your arsenal, to teach family and friends with.

I'm intrigued by the Mistral Prodigy, while I've never sailed it,
when I saw it in the Windsurf mag board test I was impressed, when
you examine the stats, you find that, it's almost as wide as the
Start, almost 20 centimeters longer, and it actually has a
retractable centerboard and moveable (sp?) masttrack.
I feel that it's a safe bet to say that staying upwind shouldn't be a
problem for a beginner. With the Start that's not always so. The
daggerboard should more than makeup for the decreased width of around
13 centimeters. The good thing about the Mistral Prodigy would be
that, it would be THE board for the conditions you'll see MOST of the
time up in Bethany. I guess it all depends on how much you want to
spend. You couldn't really go wrong either way.

Best of Luck, let me know what you decide!

Joe

That's good to hear they will be other new windsurfers
to the area. I just got a job transfer to lower
Delaware and got a place close to Lewes/Rehoboth. I
started windsurfing on used gear last summer and
finally got the hang of it, but still need to figure
out the beach start thing. Used gear was the way to
go for me but after trying some of the new boards I
might swap if I find a last season sale.

Joe

Hi Mark,

One of the drawbacks with being a newbie looking for gear is that you may
not know which used gear for sale will work best for learning. Most of the
used gear for sale out there will make learning harder than it should be.
Some of the gear that sellers say is perfect for learning is really crap
that they want to get out of their garages. If anyone tries to sell you an
old, 45lb, 14ft board, a tie on boom, and a sail that looks like a big
triangle made out of vinyl, walk away.. even if the whole kit is priced
under $100... It would be like buying 1920's skis to learn to ski in
Vermont.

The other problem is that if you really want good learning gear that you'll
be able to use as you get better, you'll need to spend some money... even if
it's used. Check out the swap meet at East of Maui that's coming up on the
25th. It's a good place to get gear at good prices. Definately talk to as
many people as you can to find out if the gear that you're interested in
will really work for you, and if the price is good. There are always people
there willing to help. If you don't find anything, talk to Mark Bandy at
East of Maui. He'll reccommend the new or used gear that he has on hand that
will give you the most bang for your buck. He'll probably point you to a
Starboard GO, Start, or another brand of widestyle board, with a light
carbon mast, an alluminum clamp on boom, and a smaller camless sail.

When you find something, PLEASE ask around to be sure that it's going to
work for you. You'll find that most windsurfers are nice people who want to
help you get on the water. Also, look thru the archives of Rec.Windsurfing
when you get a chance. This question has come up many times, and folks from
all over the world have jumped in with their ideas. You can read and search
the group from Google for free at this link:
http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&group=rec.windsurfing

I'll be at the swap, so feel free to look me up. I'll probably be near a
black Toyota truck with racks on the cap, or hanging out with the St.Mary's
college folks, or the Ezzy folks.

Brian

40cm. I remember sailing fins that small. After using the 65 and 70cm fins
on my Formula boards, I'm lost on anything that small. I was on a one of my
wave boards a month or so ago and ended up spinning out all the time cause I
kept putting so much pressure on the fin. Takes a while to get back in the
groove for smaller board/fin types of sailing.

sporting 40 cm fins, and that can severely restrict
where you can sail (e.g., Hatteras)

Greetings!

Moved to DC (Capitol Hill) from Seattle about 2 years ago, and intend to get back into the sport this spring. I'm looking for a complete package in reasonably decent shape (up to 5 years old)  that is good for typical days in this area. I had a Mistral Equipe back west, and am looking for something with similar volume ( 180 to 210 liters) - so if anyone has gear (doesn't have to be pretty ...)  they are looking to unload please contact me.
