I know the first set of responses you get from "the list" will be for adding in the South end of Seneca Lake at Clute Park, but I have been raving for a while now about the "unknown" launch from the boat-parking docks at Snug Harbor Restaurant on the South West side of Keuka Lake in Hammondsport.

You can order a beer and a basket o' fries and claim an outside table, then rig up in the parking lot or on the dock, then launch dock-start style from one of the open spots in the large dock area!

On a decent South West or West South West, that end of the lake gets really clean, unobstructed winds!

And that lake tends to empty out if it gets windy leaving plenty of criss crossing for us!

If the intent is to get totally comprehensive, I would have to add in the North Shore park at Taughanock Falls. On a North or North East day, you get a great expanse of water, plus some decent swells coming into the park. Stick your family in the Pavilion with a Fire roaring while you hit the whitecaps and make a day out of it!

And if you are truly stuck on the West side of Cayuga, Sheldrake has a couple spots to jump in:
While not ideal, the teeny tiny cul de sac of a boat launch area CAN get you into striking distance of the North Cove area (aka Wyers Point), where you can get ripping on a North , North East or even some North West...
Ditto for the restaurant a bit further south by the trailer park that just changed hands...
Same Boat parking lot docks that you can sneak out on, but this is a bit further south than the point and cove, so it does get a bit narrower and more boat traffic to deal with.

Jim, it looks like it will be nukin this weekend 10/17-18 provided that one can deal with the cold and the moisture. Wind speeds High 20's to 30 for NJ, mid 20's for the Delmarva, high teens and low 20's for points further south.

Looks like drysuit conditions for NJ with the temps in the mid to upper 40's most of the day Sat and Sun, near 50 for the Delmarva and mid to upper 50's for points further south.

Any further comments or advice?

To maximize your Autumnal Windsurfing enjoyment, I've put together a list of 8 fairly local launches that are good on a NW or a W fall flow:

1) Mason Neck S.P. It is best on a NW. The link is: http://www.windsurfresource.com/mason_neck_state_park.htm
However, the down side is that there are tons of weeds near the shore. If you can tolerate walking through them, than this is it. As a result, Mason Neck is best in Spring on a NW when there are no weeds.

2) For a longer drive for you, consider Elk Neck S.P. The link is:

but is a 2 hour drive from NVA. Has a large fetch and faces NW.

3) Another option is to go to Saint Mary's college:

this too is a 2 hr drive from NVA. This too is good on a NW, and you can
possibly hang out with other windsurfers there at the school that Farrah Hall started

4) Another option is Oxford: http://www.windsurfresource.com/oxford,_md.htm

5) Or, you can drive the 3 hours to Dewey Beach DE:

6) Queen Anne Marina, whose link is:

However, they close at 5PM and are about 75 min from NVA.

7) NW at the Gunpowder launch is an off-shore wind and is therefore bad -- unless you sail around the point (at Greenbank Road) to the north of the launch. In other words, in order to catch a good wind on a NW day at the Gunpowder, you have to sail north to get around the point so that you are looking upstream at the railroad bridge. Once you round that point and see the railroad bridge, you can get a good, steady and consistent flow on a NW day. Therefore, only if you can tolerate sailing to and around the point is Gunpowder a viable launch on a NW day.

8) Matapeake State Park, Kent Island MD Click on http://www.infosports.com/parks/MD/723029.html
for driving directions. Gear drop off and launch to the north of the parking area and the piers. This launch is currently not yet documented on WindsurfResource.com, but will be shortly.

Hence, Jim has some first hand experience with sailing in tropical cyclones.

Daphne, since you live in Northern VA, I recommend the following on a NW wind:

1) Mason Neck S.P. It is best on a NW. The link is: http://www.windsurfresource.com/mason_neck_state_park.htm
However, the down side is that there are tons of weeds near the shore. If you can tolerate walking through them, than this is it. As a result, Mason Neck is best in Spring on a NW when there are no weeds.

2) For a longer drive for you, consider Elk Neck S.P. The link is:

but is a 2 hour drive from NVA. Has a large fetch and faces NW.

3) Another option is to go to Saint Mary's college:

New Jersey State Stand Up Paddle boarding Championships

This was the MOST fun event I ever had the pleasure to be involved with. The camaraderie was great and the competition was exciting! I want to thank the competitors, sponsors (Dakine, Hyperflex, Starboards) the city of Ocean City and my friends and family that made this event happen.

On August 15^th was the date of the first annual NEW JERSEY STATE STAND UP PADDLE BOARDING CHAMPIONSHIPS. Held in the “blessed” (local Catholic church blessed the waters while we had our first event) waters (Feast of the Assumption… Anne Marie that is why your back didn’t hurt when you paddled! Like my Irish Grandmother would say, “A dip in the ocean on this day was good for what ails you”) off 7^th streetbeach in Ocean City NJ . Although we had sunny (if not down right HOT) day, the blessing of the waters didn’t help the surf conditions. “Ankle snappers”

So our enthusiastic competitors started out on a long distance race…wasn’t that long only 3.3 miles on a calm morning no wind or chop. The competitors hit the water hard and they stayed together to the first mark rounding. As they started up the long run to the “northern mark” the field started to spread out and were joined on this leg by a HUGE POD OF ATLANTIC BOTTLE NOSE DOLPHIN which is very appropriate of them since ALL the event Registration fees were donated to the Marine Mammal Stranding Center (in Brigantine NJ) www.marinemammalstrandingcenter.org it made for a beautiful photo opportunity and a neat experience for the competitors, with wild dolphin so close you were afraid they WOULD touch you! The event was won by Josh Miller fresh back from a month in Hawaii (winning on the second shortest board in the race) Followed by one OC finest Charlie Bowman and third place came to the hard charging Greg Hanson from Brigantine. Full results to follow.

After a short break I found ALL the competitors in the water “testing out” the surfability of the wave conditions. Surf able it was, with some neat rides being made by all competitors. We quickly put together an “expression session” type format with lead judge and oldest competitor Mark Hawks & I doing the honors. Length of ride, wave selection & tricks were all considered and Mark insisted on taking “dismounts” into consideration as well (Flopping in the water at the end of the wave…NO GOOD) Which I think it was BRILLIANT!! Perennial surf stars like Charlie Bowman & Ben Schnaible of Manasquan NJ and the other good surfers in the lineup. The competition was hot with lots of good natured jostling (Jostling is Jockeying with contact) However, the highest honor in this event goes to our very own TERRY JUNKER with the ALOHA SPIRIT AWARD. Terry got “Dropped in” on a WHOLE BUNCH of waves by various competitors but he kept his new found laid back mellow spirit (with a smile). Terry personified the true ALOHA SPIRT of Stand Up Paddle Surfing. It was a fun event to watch and I wish I could have been out there with you guys (even though the surf was small)

After an even shorter break (These guys were JAZZED to get out there) we set up a totally NEW EVENT called SURF SLALOM this was inspired by the old windsurfing event by the same name. It took lots of turning, speed and wave knowledge to win this event. The winner of the first heat was a “nip & tuck” affair between the winner of the distance race Josh Miller & the winner of the wave event Charlie Bowman. Joining them in the finals was the winner of the second heat Steve Janakowski and Greg Hanson. The finals were set the four best pitted against the course, conditions, luck and of course each other. The waters edge by this time was lined 2 & 3 deep to watch the final heat. The competitors charged off the beach and were very tight at the first mark the field separated after a few untimely falls with Josh & Charlie in another neck & neck dual. It was impossible to tell who would win until they entered the surf zone to the finish Josh fell in the waves, Charlie picked up a wave and looked like he would pass Josh in the end but Josh muscled his way in to just hold off the hard charging Bowman and win the Surf Slalom event.

Every competitor left with fun memories, new friends and neat prizes from our sponsors. I hope everyone had as much fun at the NJ State Stand Up Paddle Surfing Championships as I did running them, and I look forward to seeing everyone next year!

OK, We are still open 7 days a week 10 am to 6pm. We will go to weekends around Labor day and continue weekends only thru mid to late October (depending on weather) Of course we are still available 7 days a week 24 hours a day on the internet thru our website www.extremewindsurfing.com or at our warehouse 484 515 5758

A fun thing to do is plan a sailing trip to Lakes bay then set up a "Day Use" room at the Baymount Inn on site. They are VERY CHEAP during the week (weekends are still busy after all we ARE in ATLANTIC CITY a resort area) So you can sail real hard leave your rig on the beach step into a hot shower relax get warm. get some coffee. (JoJo's delivers enjoy a nice Italian meal in the day loby of the hotel with an inside view of Lakes Bay) Then go out Derig (or hit it again) and go home warm, relaxed & comfortable. With a GREAT day of sailing you didn't expect to get in this time of year.

It's like having a home right on the beach without the expense or hassle. Great way to enjoy offseason sailing without the uncomfortable wet cold ride home...Try it you'll like it!

Jim, I just wanted to say I had a great time and that I thought that this event was a great idea. Was able to SUP for my second time ever, first time ever on the ocean, saw dolphins, got a good work out, enjoyed the company and learned a lot about the sport.

It was just this kind of clinic that got me into windsurfing. Annapoliswind.com used to hold beginner clinics where they provided the equipment at a deeply discounted rate. That is why I believe that events like this have a purpose in the sport.

Look forward to seeing pictures of the event!

Summer is here we are enjoying a fun little summer swell today. This weekend it is going to be windy BOTH DAYS! (as a matter of fact it looks like wind all week)

#1 This coming SATURDAY August 1 the folks at the Pleasantville Yacht Club are hosting a swimming race (Rainbow Channel Challenge) to benifit the Donny Fund.
