There is always a stir of excitement in the watersports industry all the new stuff is being introduced. Of course 2009 offers some neat boards & sails along with new exciting SUP stuff. I'll try to keep it brief but I gotta say there is alot of cool stuff and not all of it is in"big ticket" items. I just wanna give somethings to think about.
BOARDS
The most exciting new design is in the Freestyle Wave models. JP & Fanatic have outstanding well proven designs. The NEWS here is the Starboard KODE comes in sizes up to 133L This offers a style of sailing accessable to every ability in every condition. In full on waveboard the Twin fin concept is being refined daily. This is NOT the Hifly Madd but a true waveboard that the twins make insanely loose & FAST. I'm sure as the season presses on we'll learn more in this design. High performance (FAST) freeride boards are still dominated by the Starboard FUTURA's, JP Excite & Fanatic Shark & Eagles. These shapes are refined but the MAJOR change is construction. JP's PRO EDITION are an AMAZINGLY light & stiff. Starboard introduces WOOD CARBON along with WOOD. This construction is the perfect match of lightness & durability.
SAILS
The news is from EZZY which is replacing its highly reguarded SE Wave with 2 new models The Phantom a full on wave sail this is a flatter design for high winds of the older SE Waves. The new Freestyle Wave a lighter more freestyle/freeride design to better match the new Freestyle boards. It is faster than a full wave sail & a lighter feel. Ezzy is contiuing to improve the Freeride which is a very powerful freeride sail with excellent speed.
SAILWORKS is keeping it's strong line up for 2009 Starting with the Retro, with 11 years of development, is Sailworks' most long-term sail project and arguably the most popular freeride sail sold in North America in the last decade. Massive low end power, stable mid-range, with slippery top end speed, translates to an enormously usable wind range. Built with rugged durability for long term use in an intuitive, easy to rig package. Why settle for less? Sailworks is offering a powerful Speed/jumping sail design in the light of the old B&J (Bump & Jump) type sailing called the HUCKER. Sailworks rounds out it's line with an excellent allaround wave/Freestyle sail REVOLUTION & the most underated Race designs the NX series. Then finally the RIPPER a great Junior rig We've used these for years in our training rig and are some of the most sought after sails in our fleet.
We are also excited about the new sails from Severne, GOYA & GAASTRA
SUP's
Starboard is still leading the way with a full line of SUP Boards. They are the only company R&D in Flatwater models as well as Crossover & Pure wave boards. Starboard has been the leader in SUP designs and will continue to be in 2009
Just a quick over view
For Pure Flatwater they will be offering 3 new models around 12'6" along with the current Point (14'8)
For multi-use (CROSSOVER) The SUPer 12'6 with a centerboard will be an excellent choice along with the super Stable "Big Easy" (12' X 32") and the most sought after model the Ultimate Blend (11'2") or in 2009 BLEND. with GREAT nose ridding capacity.
In the WAVE catagory there is an extensive choice Starting with the 10'5 DRIVE a slightly smaller version of the BLEND Followed by WHOPPER 10' X 34" discribed as the most significant developement in SUP's since "The Paddle!" Followed by the 9'8 ELEMENT a great high performance SUP and the 2 STINGER models 9' Stinger & The 8'5" Pocket Rocket Quad fin my personal favorite
Starboard with each model having 3 constructions there are 36 distinct boards avilable I know one will fit your application.
In the one board scenerio Amundson seems to have 3 GREAT models 11'6 Great all around flatwater to small waves. With a wide tail and flatter rocker this board glides like aboard much bigger. The 11'3 is the true all around board & the 11' is a wave catching/ridding machine. The 11' rides smaller than its length in waves.
True SUP wave ridding one can't overlook the Naish line with every board a work of art narrower in width but definitely a performance design from the 9'3 to the 9'6 QUAD, 10'6, 11'4 and the ONLY company offering a true big wave SUP GUN 11'6 along with the classic 11'6 (in 2 constructions and one of the fastest flatwater/downwind boards the 12' GLIDE
There is so much to talk about paddles, fins, Specific SUP sail rigs, bags we'll have to get into that more in latter editions.
Accessories
Things like HYPERFLEX wetsuits MOJO the most economical and best performing Wind/Kite specific wetsuis around. The Chinook SUP Rig packs for not only SUP's but beginner & Junior rigs that really work and are just "cheap" although they are inexpensive. One of the neatest new things is the DAKINE MONO Line. It has its origins in kitesurfing but is a HUGE improvement over standard fixed lines you just gotta see it to believe. Not to be forgotten (they ain't cheap) but the MAUI SAILS Carbon booms have hit the carbon boom design RIGHT. With SUPER STIFF easy to use durable booms. I'm REALLY STOKED ON THESE BOOMS. Their sails aren't bad (they are very good) either.
There is so much more to introduce and say about these and other products but we/I have all winter. I'm looking forward to 2009 already |
