Advice needed re: flying on Jet Blue with windsurf equipment   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #210 of 446 |
Hi,
I need some advice on traveling by air with our equipment. We are
going to the Florida Keys the end of this month for 9 days and are
very tempted to take our equipment with us. Jet Blue charges $60 each
way for a board, boom, mast and sail. What I would like to hear from
other sailors is: what special protection does equipment need when
you're putting it on an airplane? Anyone have good/bad experience with
Jet Blue handling your equipment? And last but not least, what do you
do when you get to your destination as far as transporting the board,
etc.? I hesitate to bring our Thule rack - so is there any other way
to secure things on a rental car? Renting a van is more expensive than
we want to pay, so the car would be a sedan of some sort.
Sorry for the barrage of questions, but avoiding the high rental fees
does sound tempting - except for all the other hassles of getting our
equipment there and back! Plus we are traveling with 2 young children
so we already have a fair amount of luggage, car seat, etc.
Thanks for any ideas you may have.
Jenny & Mark
Sterling, Va.

I completely concur... you will not get enough use in the Keys to justify it, and you will be hating life because of all the additional crap you have to deal...

My experience proves using a some kind of "soft rack" to protect a 4-door rental car can work. My soft rack is two pieces of 3-inch thick rubber which are...
