Petra Kanz clinics
Following on the successes of last years Petra Kanz clinics, in 2002
BABA will offer Petra's Intermediate Shortboard Clinic June 29/30 at
the Gunpowder and a Beginning Freestyle Clinic July 27/28. BABA
foregoes the twenty- percent sponsorship fee on Petra's clinics that
are priced at $220 when held at a club's home site. So the cost to
BABA members is an attractive $176. (BABA dues are only $20 a year
for the whole family. You still save!)
- Intermediate shortboard techniques – Gunpowder Falls State Park,
Chase, Maryland
Because we cannot count on perfect wind conditions, the curriculum
will be somewhat wind dependent. The targeted ability levels planned
for each clinic, however, will assure that no matter what wind we
have, the instruction will prove valuable. Petra has provided the
following summary of clinic content.
Shortboard (light wind conditions): uphaul, luffing drills, nose
sinking drills leading up to shortboard tacks, pivot jibes, possibly
backwinding and lee side techniques for the more advanced,
beachstarts fin first, clew first, sailchi.
Shortboard (heavy wind conditions): water starts, fin first, clew
first, sailchi, planing tacks, planing step jibes, duck jibes.
Beginning Freestyle Clinic – Gunpowder Falls State Park, Chase,
Maryland
Petra was the women's 2001 freestyle champion at the prestigious
King of the Cape competition in New England and is a uniquely
qualified freestyle instructor. She says that learning freestyle
first means "Debunking the myth that `freestyle' is a senseless
accumulation of show off tricks that only 0.5% of the windsurfing
population is able to do, and secondly, that it has nothing to do
with `normal' sailing skills."
The clinic starts with solid clew first, fin first and backwind
sailing (beach starts and waterstarts). From there it works into
helicopter tacks and body sail 360s. Petra works from successes on
these skills into more advanced tricks, all interspersed with lots
of sail-chi and how everything applies to everyday sailing. And the
beauty of a freestyle clinic is that it requires next to no wind!
