Well, after various problems with my other email address, I am hoping that this
sends through to the list.
I'd like to welcome to the list Alex and everyone else who has joined recently.
It's great to see all these Butyrskaya fans coming out. I imagine that we'll
have a lot to talk about about a week from now. Very exciting.
Okay, since my reply to Liz never came through, I'll say a little of what I said
in it (watch it come through now...). If y'all haven't looked at Liz's
Butyrskaya gallery, check it out now. I've gone bunches of times. I am right
now working on a photo chronology of Maria's career to put on my site. Works
great for the last two years, the only problem is--I have no pictures from
before 1996 Worlds. If anyone has any idea of where I can get some, please,
please contact me. I would be eternally grateful (also, I've found myself
lacking very many pictures from Olympics. I'd also like a few more of those, if
anyone knows of a place to get them).
I also wrote in response to Liz that Dick Button was also a force in making me a
Maria fan. He would always say some nasty stuff about her and I'd think, "but I
liked her." So I decided to rebel against Dick and become her fan. Okay, maybe
there was a little more to it than that, but Dick did make a little mad (but
hey, anyone beats Al Trautwig, but I'm not going to open that can of worms).
I am hoping that this goes through in a timely manner, oh boy. I hope everybody
has a great night/day.

Hello everyone,
I've just joined the list and I thought I would take a few minutes to
introduce myself and, of course, plug my web page!
I'm Liz, 28, and I live in Tallahassee Florida (currently at FSU).
Let's see, what did Lulu ask us to say? Oh yes, I've been a Butyrskaya
fan since 1994 when I saw her compete at the European Championships. I
remember Dick Button saying something nasty about her, so I paid
attention and I liked what I saw (in a manner of speaking, that is).
Anyway, I've seen Maria skate live twice. First at the Goodwill Games
in 1998 and most recently in October at the Keri Lotion Classic. My
other favorite eligible skater, Todd Eldredge, was also there so I got
two for the price of one!
Oh, here's the obligatory website plug. I've got pics from the Goodwill

haven't seen it before) and let me know what you think. I'm going to be
doing some major facelifting in the near future. I've got a ton of new

Hi!
Zhtrastvooytye!
My name is Elizabeth and I absolutely love Maria's skating!I think she is the
most beautiful, mature ,elegant skater to ever grace the ice......her unique
artistey is unpresidented:-) I love all her rutines especially her Tango and
St.James programs.I also like how she fights for everything and has some persona
and guts.I became a fan of her two years ago.My other favorite skater are Alexei
Urmanov,Yagudin,Ilia,Sasha Abt and Irina Sluteskaia,Laetitia
Hubert,Krylova&Ovsiannikov,K&D,B&S andI&Z.
I know,a little long.....I'm a Russian skating fan.I love their skating so
much.I can speak a little Russian(Ya garaveet pa-Russsky nye dol-ga)
I have skated since last year and can do some jumps and spins.
Thank you so much,Lulu, for making this mailing list and I love your web
site........I also think the media is very biased agenst her among other
Russians.I rarely get to hear anything of Maria......here I can share all my
pro-Butyrskaia feelings.
GO MARIA!:-))
Sincerely,
Elizabeth
dosveedanya:`)
Greetings Nicholas, Noriko, and Jeff!
I think "Cent Mille Chansons" is by Michel Magne. I'm not sure if I've ever
even seen it performed yet. However, I will soon be sent as copy of her two
January exhibitions in Japan. I guess this is where you saw Maria, Noriko?
Jeff, I know how you feel about being unsure of who to root for. If my two
original favourites, Brian Boitano and Todd Eldredge, ever compete against each
other, I will be so happy and so miserable. If only they had ties in skating!
This year at Grand Prix finals, I didn't know if I wanted Abt, Plushenko,
Vlashenko, Urmanov, or Weiss. I ended up really rooting for Abt (so
disappointing!), but it was quite a conflict for me.
I guess another one of my favourite things about Maria is the choice of programs
(I, too, could go on and on about my favourite things about her). She does some
stuff that I don't thinkanyone else could pull off. She can be great doing
"Vogue," great doing classical, great doing blues, great doing exotic music like
Tango or the Egyptian dance programs. And she can even use something as
overused as "Malaguena" and do a memorable job of it.
Well, I guess I've bored y'all long enough. Boy, I'm impressed with how much
this list has grown in only a week. Go Masha!

Hello all,
I'm 17 from Australia though I am studying to go to university in the
United States. I've been a fan of Maria since she won Europeans in 1998,
it was a very heartwarming thing to behold! Things I like about Maria's
personality are her passion and sincerity on the ice (someone mentioned
her honest reactions to her performances which I also admire), her
determination and enjoyment of skating. Things I like about her skating
include her capacity for interpretation of a variety of programs, from
being sexy and sassy to compelling and emotional. I like her spins,
especially her superb camel and layback positions. I like her true
triple lutz, great double axle and triple loop. I love her Tango
program, its so exotic and new, a really nice surpirse this
season.......Well I suppose the list could go on :-P
I hope Maria does well at Worlds and maybe even wins! However, I'm also
a big Michelle Kwan fan so it will be hard for me to decide who to cheer
for. Other skaters I'm rooting for at worlds are Anjelika and Oleg in
the Ice Dance, and Elena and Anton in the pairs event. If anyone's going
I look forward to full reports on Maria's programs!
'later,
Jeff

Hi, I'm a new member.
I've been a fan of Masha Butyrskaya since 1996 NHK Trophy.
That Egyptian Dance knocked me out!
Hope she'll win at worlds!
By the way, does anyone know the lyric for "Cent Mille Chansons" which is
used for Masha's exhibition number? And who's singing that song? I saw
this program live last month and it was soooooo beautiful and I was
almost crying! It was my very first experience seeing her live.
Noriko
Okay, my turn. I've been a fan of Maria B. since 1993 Euros when I saw
her skating to some rather unsual music. I hadn't seen anything that
different and original from the ladies field since Anna Kondrashova and,
I'm loathed to admit it, Kira Ivanova(only difference was that Anna and
Maria looked good doing these types of programs. Kira was just a
horror). Since then, Maria has caught my attention for her dramatic
flair(there have been only two other ocassions where I didn't go potty
when someone skated to Malaguena), her unique interpretation of music,
and her perseverance.
Other faves of mine are Mishkutenok and Dimitriev, Selezneva and
Makarov, Valova and Vasiliev, Fadeev, Abt, Browning, Torvill and Dean,
Usova and Zhulin, Annenko and Sretenski, Czako, Chen, and Kondrashova.

I agree with what you said in this. She has really
improved so much. A lot times in year past, she could
completely fall apart. At Grand Prix Finals she had
two very bad falls in the very beginning of the program,
but she was able to stay strong. She's had so much to
offer, but only now are we getting to see some more of
it. But I guess she still has more she can show us--
she could finally bring out that triple axel one day.
She seems to get better every single year--maybe by
the time she's 35 she can win an Olympic Gold (okay,
maybe I am exaggerating a tad). I just know that I
liked her the very first time I saw her, but I have
become more and more impressed with her every
subsequent performance.
I'd also like to welcome "Dr. Pepper" and the other
new members who haven't posted yet (I believe I recognize
one of the names of new subscribers from the Kataniye
list). Go ahead and introduce yourselves, even if you
just plan on lurking I love meeting other Maria fans (and
fortunately, I see these fans popping up more and more
these days).

Hi all,
I have just joined the Butyrskaya mailing list and, as requested by
Lulu, I am introducing myself. My name is Elliot and I live in
Boston. I have been a fan of Maria's since I saw her blues short
program at the 1996 Worlds on TV. Some of the things I like about
Maria:
Interesting and varied choreography and music choices Drama,
excitement, and tension in her skating
Her triple loop
Great costumes appropriate for the given routine
Her visible and honest reactions to how she skated, good or bad
It has been great to see Maria work to fulfill her potential. It was
also great to see the improvement in her attitude since her switch to
her current coach. Her overall skating is much better, as is her
ability to deal with mistakes (like her 2 falls at the recent Grand
Prix finals). Let's hope Maria can bounce back with a great
performance at Worlds!

Hi,
My name is Janice and I subscribed to the list today. I actually saw the
address for this list on the "Figure Skating World" site and I thought it
might be fun to join.
In the ladies I do not have a favorite skater but I really enjoy Maria and
often find myself cheering for her in competitions. It probably has a lot
to do with the fact that there is rarely a Canadian Woman in the top ten to
cheer for (although I am hoping for one soon). I think that Maria brings an
elegance to the ice that is matched by very few skater in the women's field
today. I think that has a lot to with her age and the fact that she has
been competing for so long. She has had time to develop her artistic side
along with the other elements. For me this is what makes a skater enjoyable
to watch. The only thing is I wish that she had time to finish her new long
program for this year (I think I heard it was choreographed to Romeo and
Juliet?) What do you think?
Well, my other email account is acting screwy, so I don't know if anyone else
has answered about www.butyrskaya.org yet. This is a site being made by my
friend Jason. He wants to have several webmasters who will be able to put
information in to the site. It is not official, but his friend Tatiana is
working on a Russian companion site to it, which we're hoping Maria will see.
As for which program Maria will skate at Worlds, I haven't really heard any word
on it. But I'm actually hoping she doesn't use "Swan Lake," and I don't think
she will, either. It's untested, and with the bad nerves she often has she
probably won't try it, or it wouldn't be advisable to, at least. I think it'll
probably show up next year.
I hope this hasn't been answered yet. I really wish I could get into my email!
(I'm doing this out of the onelist site) Oh well.

The news I've been waiting for is finally here. Maria has now been
officially added to the cast for Champions on Ice. She is listed as
only stopping in selected cities, but they do not specify which ones. I
just know that she had better come to D.C.!
Is anyone else planning on attending COI this year? I'm thinking about
adding reviews of her performances on the tour to my site, and I'd like
as many people as possible to contribute. I'll ask about this again
closer to the start of the tour.
BTW, have fun on your upcoming trip, Kate! I'm sure you'll have a great
time. Let me just add that I am so very jealous of you.

Being as Aaron introduced himself, I'll do so too! I'm Kate if you
didn't already know me. I am and also in the Toronto area. I started
the first real web site for Maria because I really enjoy her skating.
I'd seen her prior to the Nagano Olympics, but I never paid attention to
her. That was dumb! I saw her at the Olympics skate so well and take
the 4th place finish so hard, and I couldn't help but like her! I was
so disappointed no one had a site for her, that I decided to make one
for her.
Anyway, my absolute favourite skaters in the world are Oksana Kazakova
and Artur Dmitriev. Maria is very close behind though! My other
favourite skaters are B&S, A&P, Shen and Zhao, Drobiazko and Vanagas,
Sokolova, Slutskaya, Urmanov, Plushenko, Yagudin, and about 1,000
others! I have a lot of favourites. :D I've been a skating fan since I
was 6 watching G&G skate at the Olympics.
Hum....that's about it. I better go do some kind of homework. If you
want to e-mail me, please keep in mind that I'm away from friday the 12
to sunday the 22 of March. Back just in time for worlds! :D
Take care everyone!

Wow, you've been a Maria fan quite a long time! Wasn't
her win there way back in 1992? It's rare to find people
who have been fans of Maria so long. I, for example, did
not get very many skating events broadcast in my hometown
for years, so if a person wasn't in Skate America, Worlds,
US Nationals, or Olympics, I never saw them. The first time
I even saw Maria was 1995 Euros. But you lucky Canadians
sometimes get a lot more skating than we Americans.

I'm hoping, too, that Maria can turn this lost into a
better thing. I have also always been drawn to Maria's
artistry and maturity. She's one of those who I don't
think I'd care if she never even attempted one jump in
a program, I'd still enjoy her skating. And there are
so many for whom the jumping is the main thing.
Although I'd love to see the new "Swan Lake" program
be unveiled someday, I can watch her old LP over and
over.
I hope to see you posting again soon, Aaron!

Just a little info on me. I am from Toronto and I am 16 years old. One
day I decided to look up Maria on the web, and I found Kate's website. Since
then, I am always looking for articles, updates and info that I can get on
Maria.
I was really sad to see Maria skate poorly at the Grand Prix final, but
maybe this loss will help her recover and skate two excellent programs at the
Worlds in 3 weeks. I love her mature and artistic style. When I watch Maria,
the jumps aren't the focal points. She concentrates on her artistry, and that
gives her a huge advantage.
Anyways, my e-mail address is thecount32@...

I guess her superiority still showed in the technical marks.
For falling twice, including one fall that pretty seriously
interupted the flow of the program, her marks weren't that
bad at all. I know how you feel about wishing you could
just jump through the TV and give her a hug--ohhh...
I was hoping that her consistency with jumps was improving.
But I'm sure she can do better at Worlds. What I was hoping
she could do was be very successful in St.Petersburg, and
then take a lot of confidence into Worlds. She had been
talking about Kwan being beatable, and I think that if she
had dominated here it would have given her the mindset
that she was able to win the World Championship. However
likely or unlikely that may be (beating Kwan), it still
helps a lot with my nerves at least if I know that I can
and probably will skate a great program, and perhaps
have a chance of winning. She was getting into a
"confident underdog" state of mind, but I don't know
where she is now.
>P.S. Off topic, but did anyone else think Dick Button
>was too harsh on Alexandr Abt?
Well, Dick was nice for most of the program. He said
some very nice things for the first 3 minutes or so.
And then, the Button barrage started. And yes, I did
think he was a little too cruel. However, it seems
like sometimes when Button starts, it is pretty hard
for him to stop.
Another some-what off-topic comment (for future reference,
I do not consider discussion of the other Russian ladies
quite off-topic, although extensive discussion should
not be readily practised), I am becoming more and
more impressed with Irina Slutskaya. I have never
really enjoyed her skating until this year's Japan
Open. She seems to have finally started becoming
mature in her skating. She's got a ways to go, and
she probably won't get there this year, but I think
she is just looking better and better. This season
was probably growing pains for her, but I think that
once she cleans up a little, she may win me over.
Sorry it was so long, y'all. I guess I'm like Button
sometimes--once I start talking, it takes a lot to make
me stop.

Hey!!
Lulu, I'm glad you made this list for Maria! She really deserves more
attention from her fans.
I was very upset with Maria's skate. :*( She looked pretty
disappointed too, but too bad. She looked almost relieved that it was
over. Atleast she improved her placing over last year's final.
Sorry this is short. They are trying the Y2K thing here so we may not
have power for a while! :P I'm planning to add a whole bunch of other
stuff to my site soon....when I get a chance......that may be a while.
Sorry for the delays.

Aw what a sad night! The look on Maria's face said it all. Sometimes you
just want to reach in the TV and give skaters a hug!
Although Maria had two falls, she still should be proud of herself. Her
overall skating is far superior to that of the other ladies. I watch the arm
movements of some of the other ladies, and I wonder why they don't work on
changing that, try to grow more artistically. They could learn a lot from
Maria, Michelle, and little Naomi Nari Nam!
Well thanx for reading, just needed to let my feelings out on this!
Take care,
Shannon :-)

P.S. Off topic, but did anyone else think Dick Button was too harsh on
Alexandr Abt?
Hi Shannon! Welcome to the list. I know there's one
more person on this list out there, so go ahead and
introduce yourself. Trust me, there probably will
be more joining up soon. I only started this list
on Thursday night, and have yet to tell Kate (who runs
the other main Maria site)about it, or any of my fellow
Maria fans I've met these last couple of months.
For anyone that doesn't know, I'm Lulu. I'ma history
and Slavic area/language studies major, and plan to
teach both once I get out of grad school. I've been
a skating fan since 1988, the first time I saw Brian
Boitano. He is still my personal skate god for life.
I have a lot of favourites other than Boitano and Maria,
such as Eldredge, Usova and Platov, Orser, Naomi Nari Nam,
so many others. I basically just like good skating from
anyone.
I first became a Maria fan during the 1996 Worlds. I
guess it was sort-of her break-through performance there.
She just seemed so very different from all the other girls
because of the simple fact that she wasn't just one of
the girls. She has a maturity that few can match, and some
attributes that are better even than Kwan (don't get me wrong,
though, I am a Kwan fan as well). Her choreography is so
splendid, and she seems to finally be getting the consistency
she needs to be one of the very best.
I started this list and my site for several reasons.
Of course one is that she is a favourite of mine. But
another is that Maria has been largely ignored for years.
However, I think they're finally starting to pay attention
to her. And doing my site for her has actually led me
to grow in admiration for Maria and her skating.
I will be on the edge of my seat at this years Worlds.
The main thing I want is for her to put together two
solid performances. She can win, but I'm not really
looking for that to happen. No matter what, I want
her to be proud of how she did, not have that look
on her face saying "blew it again" or "oh well."
Hope to talk to y'all again soon. When other people
join up, feel free to tell your story again, and
put up with mine.
Take care,
Lulu

Hi! Glad to have found this list, thought I'd introduce myself!
My name is Shannon, and I'm from Iowa. I'm an aspiring actress/singer, and my
dream is to perform on Broadway. I have been a skating fan since the '92
Olympics when I was soooo happy Kristi won! My absolute faves are Kurt
Browning, Tanja Szewczenko, Philippe Candeloro, and Naomi Nari Nam. But the
list could go on and on, can't forget Brian Boitano, Viktor, and of course
Maria! :-)
I enjoy Maria's skating because she brings so mch maturity and elegance to the
ice. Many skaters only have the jumps and not the artistry. It's so nice to
see a skater combine the two, which Maria does!
I'm definitely rooting for her in Helsinki. I won't be there, but I'll be
cheering on my couch LOL.
Well thanx for reading this, and I look forward to talking with other Maria
fans. :-)
Take care,
Shannon :-)
