I know that many of you are subscribed to the burningriver100 discussion group for runners, but for those who aren’t and are interested in helping marking the BR100 course this year, we’ve got  a planning meeting coming up in Weds.  Hope you can make it.  If you want to help, but can’t make it to the meeting, please contact Bill.  (See his contact info below.)

Happy trails,

Joe

Subject: [burningriver] Course Marking Volunteer Meeting

Hi folks. The Burning River 100 mile race is fast approaching and I am looking for volunteers to help mark 100 miles prior to the race and sweep the course after the race. My daughter is getting married on the same day as the race August 2nd and 3rd. How does that happen? When I asked her to change the day of her wedding she told me to change the date of the race. Turns out both Celeste and Stephanie thought I was out of line. I know many of you are already volunteering at the BR100 but this is a much needed part to a successful race and if you can’t help out on race day you could certainly help with marking and sweeping. There are many opportunities to help besides just marking. There will need to be many different marking supplies produced prior to the week preceding the race August 2nd. Dave Koch has graciously accepted to fill the needs I will not be able to do coordinating this major undertaking.

We were thinking of dividing the course into 3 sections and have a team leader with a crew to start marking their section the Saturday and Sunday before the race. Ideally the week prior to the race the team would then cover the other teams section to catch any missed areas, make sure the other sections are marked uniform, and check for any markings vandalized. Race day we try to stay ahead of runners to make sure all trail markings are still up and visible. Some sections at night are set up with glow sticks race day. There are also opportunities to sweep the course after the race to clean up markings and any trash. It was rewarding to me last year to have so many finishers say what a well marked course we had. Last year it was a goal of the race committee to have great aid stations and a well marked course and I can say we exceeded the expectations.

We are planning a meeting and would like to have anyone interested in volunteering to help with this aspect of the race attend and answer any questions. The meeting is scheduled for Wednesday June 18th at Joe Jurczyk’s house in Brecksville at 7:00 pm. His address is: 10022 Gatewood Brecksville, OH

From the West….

From 21/Brecksville Rd. go to Snowville Rd.

Take Snowville east (down towards the Valley) for about 1.5 miles.  After you pass Dewey Rd. on your right, turn left on Deer Run (first street on your left).

Proceed about .7 miles to Quail Dr.(second street on your left).

Turn left on Quail and left on Gatewood.

We’re the second house on your right (tudor house: 10022 Gatewood) that probably will have a black lab running around in the front yard.

From the East….

From Riverview Rd. go to Snowville Rd.

Take Snowville west (away from the Valley) for about 1.5 miles.  After you pass Echo Hills Dr. turn right on the  next street, Old Orchard Dr.

When the street ends turn right on Hickory Ridge.

Turn left at the stop sign (Lake Forest – which turns into Deer Run).

Proceed about .2 miles to Quail Dr.

Turn right on Quail and left on Gatewood.

We’re the second house on your right (tudor house: 10022 Gatewood) that probably will have a black lab running around in the front yard.
