The origins are from Okinawa and is the birth place of ShotoKon from the house of Shoto.  The Japanese now use it as their own and is thriving as a Japanese art.

I have studied Shotokan for over twenty years and even though many people think Shotokan is Japenese is becuase that name really does not exist there in Japan....
