I will be doing a relaxed ride with Gabriela on
Wednesday morning (9:00 AM) along the East Bay Bike
Path. Probably around 20-30 miles, it'll be a good
recovery ride for anyone that. . .needs to recover!

We'll be leaving from Thayer and Angell (Gabriela just
moved here and doesn't know where Faunce is yet).

Hopefully we can get some people to join for a fun
ride!

Hey all,

Going to leave from Faunce at 8:30 tomorrow AM for the TH loop. Don't have time for the extra loop, although others may. I've got to be done by 11, so that's why I'm leaving earlier.

Please post back to the list if you think you'll make it, or at least email me directly.

Usual shenanigans apply, although I've been off the bike for a couple of weeks so I'll be playing catch-up a bit.

Cheers,

Jason

The NBW has a 9am ride from the East Providence parking lot every
Saturday.

They ride down to Bristol for coffee & bagels.

I started this ride as a low speed option to the BTH ride a few years
ago and the Brown turnout was light but the NBWers took off with it.

Check it out for a nice recreationally paced ride.

Hey,
Anyone up for riding the East Bay Bike path tomorrow
morning? It's supposed to rain in the morning
though, so I'll play it by ear, although I don't mind
getting a little wet. (granted, my idea of rain is
rain in Los Angeles) I think I'll leave around 900 AM
from Faunce unless it's absolutely pouring.

Anyone want to join?

Hi Brown Riders,

My name is Gabriela Salazar. I've just moved to Providence to attend
RISD for an MFA in painting. For a while now, I've been sitting
quietly in on ride announcements and group discussions; figured it was
time to introduce myself.

I have never raced, however, about four years ago I completed the
Habitat Bicycle Challenge, a cross-country ride for Habitat for
Humanity, affiliated with Yale, where I did my undergrad. And though
I may be a slow-poke now, when I was on my bike daily and climbing the
Rockies, I was quite the mean speed machine. Mainly, I think my
training and enthusiasm suffered from not having people around to go
riding with.

As an aside, I am also on the RISD biking board and all that ever gets
posted is "come chat with me, I'm fast" spam from "racygirl". It's
very disappointing. So I hope it's not a problem I'm not a Bear; I'd
like very much to go on rides with you all. What rides that go out
semi-regularly should I try to hop onto, and is there a schedule of
rides once classes start?

I will also be in town next week with nothing to do and would love to
take a medium-paced long ride through the area to get my bearings. I
am living on the West Side, and my internet is not hooked up yet, but
I will be checking regularly.

Thanks.
Looking forward to meeting you,
Gabriela

Anyone up for a ride tomorrow at 9:00. I was thinking about doing hills, but could be persuaded to do something else. send me an email or call me (734-239-5451) if you want to ride (since I won't ride across town if no one's coming). I'll check my email at around 8:30, so let me know if you're coming and I'll be at Faunce at 9:00.

Following Priscilla's June statement and proposal:

My name is Bladi Duran and I am running for the position of Officer. I have been
involved with cycling and racing since I was about 14. My experience was
initially with mountain biking and alpine ski racing but eventually switched
over to Road cycling, and I was hooked not long thereafter. In a clandestine
meet for late night eats back in April, Graham Anderson aka Lil G and I threw
out some ideas to play with as prospects for the future of Brown racing, and
from that I tried to churn out a few goals I would have for the racing team. The
first major issue we had to discuss was the most obvious- the upsetting amount
of funding we have to move forward as an organization. It seemed fitting, then,
to devote a good deal of time throughout the Fall to drafting inquiry letters
and sending them to the right places in search of new sponsorship, scouting if
you will. A dollar amount may be unrealistic here, but a specific number of
sponsors as a goal certainly is not. Graham's idea wa! s even offering to do
publicity events for our potential sponsors throughout the Fall. I have a good
deal of sales experience, having been a Field Sales Leader at Vector Marketing
when I was 18 accumulating approximately 18k in personal sales in one Summer. I
am good at networking and selling a product, so I don't doubt if our
organization is cleaned up a bit, we can interest other organizations. This is a
major issue that is going to need a lot more dialogue though, and I'd be happy
to discuss this in a more collaborative manner to ensure we have a great deal of
monetary viability in the long term.

Also, there are a couple ideas to think about for accomplishing over the next
two or three seasons, but can certainly be put to the side until other aspects
of the team fall into place. The first is actually attaining a coach, which
under consensus fell under the category of long term, since that would
ultimately be covered by the funding we have yet to achieve. It is pretty clear
that while experience has a major role in racing success, a professional
presence to assist in racing development tailored to different rider's abilities
and goals would benefit the team. In other words, experienced racers on the BCC
can only help so much, but a coach refines the training programme for each
individual, which naturally becomes a valuable asset in group performance- when
each knows his/her limits, goals, strengths and weaknesses and can therefore
delegate responsibilities and tactics in a peloton more readily. I think this
would help us function as a unit much better. But alas, "! ;the flying V" dream
must wait as a type of luxury goal. Another not as important but certainly soon
kind of goal is to attain a training room, some kind of team space where we can
deck out the walls with memorabilia, maybe a couch, a tv, some cycling videos,
as G had suggested, perhaps even some space for rollers/trainers. Also, I know
there were a few concerned about our website. I'm all for that, although my
rudimentary programming knowledge means I could help zero with the javascript or
html, but layout/design could certainly be something up for discussion. I know
there was even mention about redesigning our team outfits, anyone else for this
idea?

The last two ideas I have are to be an aim for this coming season and I think
would really help to develop what is no doubt missing from our racing squad thus
far, a cycling culture, one that is particularly enticing for undergrads. My
friends at Dartmouth, Kevin Wolfson and Toby Marzot have the privilege of
enjoying an annual retreat over Spring break. I think it would be fitting to
organize some daily training rides in the midst of some geographic pleasantries,
places with some brutal ascents, perhaps a Colorado, California, a Georgia, an
upstate New York if we want to be close, or if we want to be unoriginal and
follow Dartmouth's lead, North Carolina countryside. Do I hear road trip? The
memories we would share. The second idea I threw out to Graham and I have
mentioned to Priscilla as well would be a weekly ride for the entire racing
team, the Brown peloton ride. It would perhaps be early in the week, but I think
especially as a publicity gig to gain exposure while in o! ur sexy lycra, we
could enjoy as a team a few runs around the Brown campus, right on time, each
and every week, looking serious and spitting hot fire terrorizing the streets
repeatedly - it just says more to me than a Ratty dinner, to be honest.

This past Spring I was forced to forfeit my entire racing season due to heavy
math and CS work, meaning I was thoroughly frustrated with how little I was able
to dedicate to the BCC, but having changed my major and having gotten to ride
with and meet new faces involved with this group, I think we can bring together
a club where many faces are never seen. My bias is toward racing, and while I do
love the BCC, I think it's time we brought all the faces into light who would
like to compete, and to compete with style; the goal of the group I want to
associate with is one that develops racers. I know we have the depth, talent,
and ambition all around. I'd like to make those aspects thrive in a way that can
outpace any problems with consistency we have historically been crippled with,
which will hopefully translate into logistical success and some gnarly wins.

I saw this story on Fark.com

One version said that Jesse is 18 y/o. which amazed me 'cause I met him
almost 15 years ago. He was a HUGE three year old, fast on a bike too.

Hi,
My name is Jeff Hall and I play men's lacrosse at Brown. I am sending you this email to inform you about a new program that will be implimented next fall to help increase attendance and boost school spirit at athletic events. The program is called browNation and was founded by Moses Riner('09) with assistance coming from the Brown Sports Marketing Office. He was inspired to create this program because of the success that this kind of program had at his old school, Duke University. With your help, we are trying to make this program an instant success that will have continued success long after we're gone. This is an excerpt from the unofficial brochure that I have attached to the email for you to get a better idea of what its about and check out the attached unofficial brochure for more information.

"BrowNation is the only official student fan club of the
Brown Bears! It is open exclusively to Brown students
and was formed to increase school spirit, heighten
awareness, build relationships, increase attendance,
and to give our Bears a boost of energy and excitement
as they battle for Ivy League and NCAA glory! For only
$20, BrowNation members have an opportunity to earn
free apparel and Grand Prizes by attending designated
athletic games and showing their BrowNation Card.
Exclusive giveaways, contests, and special events are
also part of your BrowNation membership!"

The first game will be the adidas Soccer Classic on Friday, Sept. 7th, with a campus wide BBQ at Stevenson Field before hand.

Also, we are looking for a hand full of students who are crazy about Brown and will be willing to paint-up/get crazy at games. We are looking for intensity. These students need to be committed to Brown Athletics and willing to go to games rain or shine. They will be the "elite super fans" if you will, within the overall group. We are thinking of things to entice people to do this, possibly putting their name on a plaque and putting it in the Omac, or other ideas that we are currently thinking of. If you have an idea that would make you want to do this, let us know. Football players, I know some of you have to be down for this. So if you or anyone on your team is interested let me know, and I will put you in touch with the right people. Or, you can contact the Sports Marketing Office directly.

Lastly, the official brochures will be around campus in the fall. They will definitely be in the Pitz, but check out for them around campus.

Thanks! If you have any questions about browNation you can contact me or the Sports Marketing Department.

Go Bears!

Since no one has posted as of yet, I am posting tomorrow's ride for
8:30am if interested. I need to be back by 12pm and I want to have the
option of riding the extra loop if I feel like it. Additionally, it is
going to be hot again so the earlier out the less I have to deal with
the weather.

Saturday 8:30am Faunce.

Remember: Sunday NBW ride at 10am from Providence Bicycle on Branch
Avenue. It will be a great challenging ride. Trust me

Hi,
My name is Jeff Hall and I play men's lacrosse at Brown. I am sending you this
email to inform you about a new program that will be implimented next fall to
help increase attendance and boost school spirit at athletic events. The
program is called browNation and was founded by Moses Riner('09) with assistance
coming from the Brown Sports Marketing Office. He was inspired to create this
program because of the success that this kind of program had at his old school,
Duke University. With your help, we are trying to make this program an instant
success that will have continued success long after we're gone. This is an
excerpt from the unofficial brochure that I have attached to the email for you
to get a better idea of what its about and check out the attached unofficial
brochure for more information.

"BrowNation is the only official student fan club of the
Brown Bears! It is open exclusively to Brown students
and was formed to increase school spirit, heighten
awareness, build relationships, increase attendance,
and to give our Bears a boost of energy and excitement
as they battle for Ivy League and NCAA glory! For only
$20, BrowNation members have an opportunity to earn
free apparel and Grand Prizes by attending designated
athletic games and showing their BrowNation Card.
Exclusive giveaways, contests, and special events are
also part of your BrowNation membership!"

Hey kate--

I ship with fed ex when I need to ship in cardbox (when not on an airplane or in
my hard case). I found them to be cheaper, and have never had problems. I've
also used DHL with success.

Just remember that the dimensions of the bike box are going to bump up to a new
category of weight/size class and you're going to have to pay for up to
100-something pounds of weight. Its that way with all shippers.

So its gonna cost you, but now that airlines have jacked their rates for
shipping bikes anyway... its not a big deal in the grand scheme of things.

I would recommend stuffing lots of newpaper in there, and reinforcing with extra
layers of cardboard everywhere. Seriously should be fine...

In conclusion... buy insurance on the value of your bike if you're nervous.

You'll be fine.

Best,
~E

It's probably time for a BCC Wiki. You know, "where can I keep my bike at the
dorms?" and that kind of thing.

I haven't got one to offer, though. So I'm about to ask a question I'm sure has
been asked and answered before.

Shipping for my racing bike? I'm going out to San Diego for a while and I need
to ship my racing bike. I don't have a hard case, but I'm worried about
shipping in a cardboard box. So... is it dangerous to ship in cardboard?
Should I try to borrow a hard box (anyone?)? Also, recommendations as to UPS or
FedEx ground or something else? The cost is not a huge factor and neither is
time -- safety is my main concern. I've flown with my bike but never shipped
it. I would never fly with cardboard...

Thanks,
Kate.

To all Brown University an invite to Sunday's ride

On behalf of Refunds Now Tax Services and the Cycling Team, we would
like to invite you to participate in our first (of what we hope will be
many) NBW rides. The ride will be this Sunday August 5 leaving at 10am
from the parking lot adjacent to Providence Bicycle at 725 Branch
Avenue Providence. The ride is a beautiful and challenging course, with
rides of 10/35 and 57 miles. Providence Bicycle will be having sales
promotions and offering food (Pizza?)after the ride.

We look forward to having all of you come and attend. This is one of
those courses you will be coming back to often for rides if you live in
the Providence and Northern RI area.

Come out with us. We look forward to riding with you all.

Hi all,

As some (all?) of you may know, I'm back in Seattle this summer, racing
my track bike every Friday and generally making a nuisance of myself
with snarky anti-doping emails. Last summer (my first on the track), I
sent a couple of race reports, but this year, I've been busy off the
track, and I haven't gotten around to it. Also, until this last Friday,
my racing has been either lackluster or rained out and cancelled, so
there wasn't much to report.

Let's start with Thursday night, when I was operating under the pretext
that a clean bike is a fast bike. As such, I went ahead and completely
degreased the track bike's chain, cleared the degreaser, and went to dry
the chain. A moment of inattention later, and i realized that my thumb
was stuck between the chain and the cog on the back--which really really
hurt. So I went to the ER.

To make a long story short, I had some x-rays taken, and I'd managed to
punch a tooth from the cog all the way through my thumbnail and deep
enough into my thumb to break the bone at its tip. This REALLY
hurts--don't try it. They wrapped my thumb in a bandaid, a splint, and
some gauze, and they told me I couldn't hurt it any worse, so if I could
tolerate the pain, I was cleared to race.

So I raced.

Ow.

There were three races on the night. The first race was a 10-lap
scratch, which at 400m/lap, translates into a 4km long criterium, where
the first person across the line wins. Pretty simple. With three laps
to go, they rang the bell for a $10 preme, and I was sort of in
position--so I drilled it, and no one followed. I blew past the 2 man
break 200m before the line, and took the preme comfortably:

http://www.wheelsinfocus.com/2007/pages/94AD9047fsa.htm

too comfortably. As I crossed the line, I looked back, saw the gap, and
put my head down and motored. In case you're curious, I make faces when
I go that fast for that long:

http://www.wheelsinfocus.com/2007/pages/94AD9052fsa.htm

but everything worked out, I held about 6 bikelengths at the finish, and
took a classless, jersey-open victory lap:

http://www.wheelsinfocus.com/2007/pages/94AD9052fsa.htm

Note also the monster thumb bandage, and the no-glove style--couldn't
get the gloves over the bandage.

Race # 2 was a miss-and-out, which means that the last person across the
finish line on each lap gets pulled from the race until there are five
riders left, and then they sprint for places. I rode this race pretty
conservatively, managed not to get pulled, and botched the sprint:

http://www.wheelsinfocus.com/2007/pages/94AD9256fsa.htm

that's me in the middle barely hanging on to second place. I think
Sean's pink grips were slowing him down, but I'm not complaining.

The last race of the night was a points race, and Amara had gotten bored
with her camera by that point--she didn't take pictures of the sprints
at all, so I'm going to have to do my best to describe the 5x5 without
visual aids. A 5x5 means 5 sprints, one every 5 laps, with points
awarded 5-3-2-1 for 1st-4th on each sprint. The person with the most
points at the end of the race wins. Well, Ian (the guy who won the
second race, and finished 2nd in the first race, was my only remaining
competition for the omnium, so I spent this race watching Ian's wheel.
We were both out of position for the first sprint, and then he took off
for the second sprint with me on his wheel. There was a solo rider up
the track, and I came around Ian to grab the 3 points to his 2. The
pack caught the solo rider, another rider went, and Ian took off for the
third sprint with me on his wheel. I got around again, and now it was 3
different guys with 5 points, me with 6, and Ian with 4. On the 4th
sprint, I got boxed completely out of position, and Ian went and took
2nd--which meant he was now leading the race. Not good. Then a break
of 3 riders went clear, including one of the guys with 5 points--which
meant that my chances to overtake Ian were mostly up the road, as was
the likely winner. Then I got lucky--I dropped into the chasing
paceline at around 6th wheel, and the 2 guys on the front killed
themselves bringing back the break, then pulled off and left Ian to
close the last 20m. We took the bell about 10m behind the break, with a
fading Ian on the front and me on third wheel. Second wheel attacked, I
followed, and as we got to the break, I hit it as hard as I could over
the top--and rode away for max points on the final sprint and the points
race and omnium wins.

Like I say, I had a pretty good night on Friday. Behold the power of
the thumb.
