First year med-student here, Rhode Island native (Cumberland),
just moved to Bowen ST (right off Thayer). Interested in going on
some rides soon- hopefully by next weekend I'll be all settled in
my apt. I've been road-riding solo for a solid 3 years and want to
start getting into group riding- maybe even do racing in the
spring if my schedule permits.

See you on the road soon,
Justin

Rob, the cool repair guy at Providence Bicycle on Thayer, wants
to start rides from the store. He's leading rides on Wed and
Fri at 7am (yes, seven aye emm). He plans on friendly rides of
about 25 miles out into Seekonk. If you want to join, show up
in the alley in front of the store by 7. He'd like it if you
also called him and told him to expect you; his cell is
9 9 6 1 3 4 7.

He's also leading a ride tomorrow (Sat, July 31) at 7am.

Hi all:

Given the recent set of new allegations made in the media about doping,
I figured I would emphasize that under NO circumstances should anyone
at Brown (or any cyclist for that matter) even consider the use of
performance enhancing drugs (well other than perhaps an espresso). But
for the record, I also thought I would show how the media distorts
things to find a story:

If you noticed, Lance chased down Simeoni from a break due to their
"dispute". Details are:

> Simeoni, 32, is a key witness in the trial of controversial Italian
> sports doctor Michele Ferrari, with whom Armstrong has admitted
> working in the past. Earlier in the race Simeoni had confirmed his
> intention to take Armstrong to court for defamation

Now Velonews then "factually" remarks on Ferrari's reputation by
stating (this same claim about him has appeared many times over the
past years as evidence of what a slime he is):

> Ferrari has been quoted as saying that EPO was no more harmful for one
> than a glass of orange juice.
>
Now today CyclingNews published the original text of that 1994
interview from which this claim was supposedly taken (again it has been
re-reported for years - but I guess without reading the original
quote):

> Jean-Michel Rouet: Speaking of EPO, do your riders use it?
>
> Dr Michele Ferrari: I don't prescribe this stuff. But one can buy EPO
> in Switzerland for example without a prescription, and if a rider
> does, that doesn't scandalize me. EPO doesn't fundamentally change the
> performance of a racer.
>
> J-MR: In any case, (EPO) is dangerous! Ten Dutch riders have died in
> the last few years.
>
> Dr MF: EPO is not dangerous, it's the abuse that is. It's also
> dangerous to drink 10 liters of orange juice.

Notice there is nothing about a "glass" of oj. And his comments, while
not perhaps completely as anti-doping as one would hope, are not the
absurd claims that have been attributed to him.

Also, today Tyler Hamilton responded to charges against him:

> Regarding Prentice
> And finally, as if July wasn't a tough enough month for me personally,
> I just want to make something clear.
>
> I arrived home from Paris on Monday afternoon to read the story on the
> Internet some of you have referenced in the guest book on my website.
> A former part-time team physician has made derogatory public
> statements about my former U.S. Postal teammates and me. This is not
> the first time this man has done this. (reference: Gorski incensed
> about drug allegations against Postal team).
>
> It has always been my policy to try to take the high road and keep
> some thoughts to myself. But I also realize there are a lot of young
> cyclists who follow my career, so it is on their behalf that I will
> finally respond.
>
> The claim that I, along with another teammate, approached a team
> doctor and asked him questions about doping products back in 1996 is
> absolutely false. I swear on my wife's life and the grave of my dog
> that I never asked that man about anything of the sort. If you know
> anything about me, you know this is as emphatic as I can be. I'm truly
> saddened to have to respond publicly to such an accusation.

The point of all this? Don't assume that because these people ride at
the top level that they use drugs. These people are role models and
successful because of their hard work and focus!

Happy riding!

-m

—Norma S, Brooklyn

I had a GREAT time!!
—Craig H, New Jersey

I am sure I saw places in NYC that even the NYPD doesn't know exist. It was a
fabulous ride. My friends and I will be riding (with a bigger group, I'm sure)
again next year primarily to see the things I am sure we missed this year.
—Edward G., New Jersey

  <http://www.transalt.org/calendar/century/cimages/photos/050.jpg> Thanks so
much for another fantastic NYC Century. I rode it for the first time last year
and was stunned at the variety and richness of the route. This year, I was
impressed at the professionalism of the marshals, the variety and quality of the
snacks, the friendliness of rest stop staff, the presence of EMT and police, the
improved route ... was I too tired to notice these things last year? Thanks for
giving me a reason to ride 100 miles! Cheers,
—Jeanette S., New York

Although I lived in the city for most of my 57 years, it was only on the NYC
Century Bike Tour that I got to go through neighborhoods that I had never been
to before in my life. It was truly the ultimate urban experience. Thanks again,
—Marty S., New Jersey

My brother from Michigan wanted to see NYC. He did the NYC Century with my wife

One further note: A bike trip is the sort of thing that is accessible to
everyone. There's no "level" assigned to a ride like this. With modern
technology like maps and route markers, the group can split according to
pace and/or detours, tourist sites, distances, number of preferred ice
cream stops, etc. And anyone can do a 60 mile ride if they take it at
their own pace and do a little riding the few weeks before, as evidenced
by the Bike and Build crew crossing the US right now! I really want to
encourage anyone thinking of doing it to give it a shot. The more the
merrier!

Cyclists of Brown,

I have had questions and suggestions several times concerning the bike
club doing a two or three day bicycle weekend trip. Recently, I've
started daydreaming about this, and I thought perhaps a nice choice would
be to take three days on the Columbus Day weekend (both of the previous
two years it's been nice weather), and bike out toward Cape Cod.

Looking at the maps, I think one idea would be to bike out to Myles
Standish State Forest, near Plymouth (about 60 miles), and set up camp
there the first night. Then, the next day could be used to ride out along
the cape and back, with various route lengths available so people could do
a greater or lesser distance. There are lots of tourist sites to see,
beaches, lookout towers, old mills and cranberry bogs, that kind of thing.
Leaving camp set up at Myles Standish would make logistics much smoother,
and we could sleep there again (and roast marshmallows and tell ghost
stories and the whole shebang), before heading back to Providence via a
slightly different route. Most riding would be flat to rolling, and very
quiet roads.

If you like the idea, please write me and tentatively reserve the weekend
on your calendar. I'd be pleased to deal with logistics and routes.

N.B. There are, of course, things that need working out. Most
importantly, getting camping gear & clothing etc. out to Myles Standish
(i.e. do we make people bring racks and panniers of stuff, or do we beg
some generous soul to drive (it's a 1 hr drive)?).

Thanks,
Kate.

In celebration of a certain exciting change of circumstance involving a
"3" and a "2" and relevant to myself, especially when riding a bicycle,
I'm announcing a ride:

Kate-is-a-cat-too Ride
Wednesday (tomorrow) 3:30 pm
Faunce Arch
Level 3

On the agenda: West, to the beautiful Scituate roads, then maybe north to
stop by the Lincoln crit before heading home. Highlights will probably
include Mann School road, which has also seen a certain upgrade recently.
You may also be treated to some stories of Colorado and some intimate
details concerning Cippolini.

*** REMINDER: Thursday is Bob's Time Trial. I'm still on a quest to beat
15 minutes. Come out and try the course yourself. We'll meet at Faunce
arch at 5:15 pm and take an easy ride out to the course. *****

Guys,

there's interest, though, we could maybe do another one.

Ride, 6:15 pm tonight, lazy and hazy: level 2-3 (everyone welcome), 1.5
hrs, east/flat-rolling, just to spin the legs and enjoy the oppressive
humidity and the smell of the cows that I missed so much this past week
while riding in the Rockies.

The smallest (or second smallest, the tour of Jan Mayen may be smaller) nåtional
tour just finished on sunday. The results are in, and it was a most exciting
tour won with only a 9 second lead overall. Much like the tour, the roads were
often blocked by cows, and a multitude (read 3) of spectators filled the
maintain passes. Results and pictures are at http://www.tsf.fo.

Enjoy, Arni

Hi everyone,

I'll be doing a longish ride tomorrow, probably around 4 hours.
Will go out to Scituate, exploring some unusual roads. I'm thinking a
steady, moderate pace (say 15 mph), which makes it a level 3-4. There
will be some hills involved. Meet at Faunce at 3 pm.

I'm planning to head out from the front of the CIT @ 4:15pm for a ride.
It will be a level 1-2 ride on the Brown Cycling scale. We will not
drop anyone! Depending on who shows up, will determine where we go ;)

We had two from the Brown Cycling community join us last week and ended
up wandering through some of the "back" roads of Riverside and
Barrington.

Not Brown related but 6 NBWers showed up at a deserted Keg Room
downtown Wednesday night and had all 12 TVs to ourselves. Bob Roll
on a 60" screen is a hoot. Oh yeah, $3.00 pitchers of Molson
Canadian added to the festive mood.

Come and test your time trialing skills, or just come out for a good time, with
Rafe and Ben. They'll be meeting under Faunce Arch at 5pm. Also, remember to
bring $6 if you plan on doing the actual time trial.

Howdy, folks. I just joined the list and wanted to introduce
myself. I'm a staff member in Sociology, live in Rumford on the
Sunshine Creamery block, and ride every day to commute, plus a few
more miles when I can squeeze them in around my family time. I
probably won't be able to make most of the club evening/weekend rides,
but hope to catch some of you now and then.

All the best,

Hi everyone,

I'll be doing a hilly ride tomorrow, 2-3 hours up north. Meet at
Faunce at 4. Should be level 3-4.

I'm also wondering if anyone has advice on saddles or, even
better, a spare racing or touring saddle I could use for a bit. I rode a
Selle San Marco Era saddle -- the first racing saddle I've tried -- for
the whole spring, and it just killed me. Lots of nasty saddle sores that
never really went away. I think it's the narrowness that did me in. So I
clearly need to change saddles, but I have no idea what to look for. If
you have a saddle lying around (preferably a bit wider than a standard
racing one) and would be willing to let me ride on it for two or three
weeks, I'd be much appreciative.

Thanks,
Rafe

howdy, Pete here. '01 Tufts alum, living on the East Side, working
in Bristol, riding regularly in Arcadia and Lincoln Woods. I'll try
to post rides and can carry 1-2 people and 3+ bikes in my pickup to
the woods.
Should be riding Blackstone too, but my road bike hasn't arrived yet.
Cheers,
