MSG and Fox Sports viewership is up significantly because of the
Cablevision block out of Yes.
But I haven't read any specific stats yet as to whether the Cyclones
are bringing in more viewers in their time slot than than they ran
last year.
I guess we'll find out next season.
If they run more games than this year, than I guess they consider it
a success. If they run the same or fewer, I guess that will answer
the question.
I think they still see Cyclones games as nothing more than filler for
programming time right now.

Minor league baseball attendance is up across the board, with the
largest growth in the NY Penn over the past year or so with the entry
of the larger markets here in NY, suburban Boston, (Lowell) and
Aberdeen .
I think the Times cares less about the actual game itself and more
about putting a spin on it that will sell them more papers.
People like us who care less about the between innings promotions and
entertainment and more about what's actually happening on the field
and within the organization for a short season low level A team are a
minority among Times readers.

What bothers me most about the stub hub is the auction part of it.
I have no problem with a season ticket holder selling extra seats to
games they can't sell themselves, or with the Cyclones participating
in that, or even the commission.
But when I see tickets for the Staten Island Yankees series being
sold there on auction for as much as $37.00 a ticket, it bothers me a
lot.
Especially since fans can't sell tickets at face value within a
certain distance from the ballpark!
When I started the Cyclones ticket exchange, it was partly because I
saw opening day tickets for last year being auctioned off for such
unbelievably high prices on Ebay while true baseball fans like Desert
Viking who wanted a seat for opening day were being shut out.
I think all fans who want to see a Cyclones game should have a chance
to and pay the same price the Cyclones charge at the window.
I try to prevent any kind of scalping on the ticket exchange site and
encourage people to send me the e mail addresses of people who are
selling tickets for more than 20% of face value.
Those who do are banned from the group and it bothers me that the
Cyclones are allowing people to sell tickets for more than 3 times
face value and taking a cut from it to boot.
Unfortunately, I think you're wrong on the Cyclones breaking the law
here because they're selling tickets for their own event and aren't
acting as a broker for other non KeySpan events.
I think they saw all the action on Ebay and the high demand for their
tickets in the resale market and wanted a piece of the pie.

Yup, game was called at around 8:25.
Of course the rain ended not too long after that.

Team members were out on the field a few times, once doing the Cha
Cha with Bobby Malek wearing Marty's jersey and running back and
forth with the monkeys. Was great seeing them really be a team

Hey Pat

Thankfully the game was postponed. I left at 8:15. An announcement
will be made by the Cyclones on Monday.

I don't know, there have been several reports on ESPN.com about
potential trades involving first year players that will be "named
later." Do you really think Selg will nix any deals? He is so in
the owners pockets he wouldn'y do a thing.

Love that Minnesota is running away with it. If the Mets don't do
anything I would love to see Montreal get in as well.

Let's turn the discussion away from Turray specifically then.
You mentioned that John Ford Griffin was released because he had an
attitude.
If a Cyclone player had the same attitude toward the fans and his
fellow teammates, but was also the best player in the league and an
excellent future prospect, should he be traded or should they stick
with him and hope the organization can turn him around?
Would you take the chance on trading away the next Barry Bonds
because he had an attitude?

There goes that independent league bias again.
Cylones alumni 1st baseman Jeremy Todd after being released by the
Mets found new life in the independent Western league.
He's leading that league now with a.379 average.
http://www.westernbaseball.com/leaders_current.html
Now I'm not questioning the Mets decision to release him last July.
He was 0-7 at that time with only 1 RBI when they let him go and I
might have done the same thing.
Did the Mets give up on him too soon?
Maybe, maybe not, only time will tell.
Other Cyclones alumni that were released by the Mets have played in
the independents also like Tony Coyne, Joel Zaragoza and Brett
Herbison.
Alec has them all listed on his Cyclones alumni sheet.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/brooklyncyclones2/files/Cyclones_Alumni_
Stat_Sheet.xls
I admit that Coyne, Zaragoza and Herbison aren't doing as well as
Jeremy Todd is, but at least with the independents, they're getting
the second chance that affiliated ball never gave them.
If the Mets don't want to make the move to bring a higher level of
full season affiliated baseball here, maybe the independent leagues
would.
And if they did, the team would probably wind us being just as
popular as the Cyclones are, maybe more so if they could get some
familiar faces.

Won't work even that way. The Commissioner voided a deal because the
"player to be named later" was traded in the year following the
original trade
deal. The cut-off date is the end of this month. There will be a

The Cyclones bats had perked up lately, but the combination of
Crosscutter starter Roberto Novoa and reliever Henry Owens held
Brooklyn to just two hits in a 1-0 Williamsport shutout. Abraham
Ayala and Blake Whealy had Brooklyn's 2 hits. On the positive side
was Neal Musser. Making his 4th (and likely last) rehab start, he
went the first five innings (his longest stint to date) and allowed
just one hit. Following an established pattern, Chad Bowen came on
the relieve Musser in the 6th inning. He had pitched 8 straight
scoreless innings in this capacity, but that ended quickly, as he
yielded back-to-back singles to Matt Meath and Tabor Lee to start the
inning. After Jorge Cortez sacrificed the runners over, cleanup
hitter Humberto Aliendo singled in the games only run. The Cyclone
defense took over and turned double plays in the 6th, 7th, and 8th
innings to keep Bowen out of further trouble. Despite committing 3
early errors, the Cyclones turned a team record 5 double plays in the
game. But, as noted, the one run was enough as Williamsport took 2
of three in the series.

Back at 500 again, Brooklyn (15-15) now trails Williamsport by 4
games. The Cyclones also find themselves all alone in 4th place in
the McNamara Division. That's because, New Jersey completed a three
game sweep over Hudson Valley with last night's come from behind 6-3
win. The Cards have 4 straight overall and at 16-14 remain 3 games
behind Williamsport. 2nd place Staten Island also lost a game in the
standings as Aberdeen got a rare home win, 4-2 over the Yanks. SI
drops to 17-13, 2 games behind while the Iron Birds improve to 13-17,
and remain 6 games behind. Hudson Valley fell further into the
cellar. The Renegade losing streak has now reached 5 games and at 10-
20, they are nine games behind. They become the league's first 20
game loser. Aberdeen and Hudson valley combined are just 6-21 at
home.

In the Pinckney Division, Mahoning scored 4 runs in the 8th inning to
break open a tight game and defeat Batavia 8-3. The Scrappers took
the last two games of that series. At 14-16, Batavia falls 5 games
off the pace; while at 16-14, Mahoning Valley remains three games
behind division leading Auburn. The Doubledays and Jammers played the
wild game of the night. Auburn was cruising 6-1 in the 7th inning,
but Jamestown scored 2 in the 7th and 3 in the 9th to tie it up.
They probably shouldn't have bothered, as Auburn scored 8 runs in the
top of the 11th to win the game 14-6. Jammer pitcher Dave Johnston
was allowed to be the sacrificial lamb as all the 11th inning runs
were off him and earned. Overall, the Doubledays pounded out 20 hits
in the game. Justin Owens and Clint Johnston had four hits a piece
and Russ Adams 3. Those three hits now vault Adams into the lead in
league average. Brooklyn's Haji Turay went 0-3 so he drops to 2nd
at .350, 4 points behind Adams. The Doubleday's team average jumps
to a league leading .280. One other note from the game – one of
those "that's why it's minor league ball" things. Leading off the
bottom of the 11th, Jamestown's Kevin Randel led off with a booming
double. With his team down by 8, for some reason he thought he could
make it a triple. He was gunned down by a mile. I guess that's one
of the reason Jamestown falls to 13-17, 6 games behind.

In the Stedler Division, we finally broke the recent pattern of first
the top two teams winning, then the next day the bottom two teams
winning. Last night was the bottom's turn and Lowell certainly held
up their end of the bargain at Tri City. They scored 7 runs in the
first inning and cruised from there to a 14-1 win. But the pattern
was broken when Vermont came up an 8-3 loser at Oneonta. This is the
first time in almost a week that any team in that division has won or
lost more than one game in a row. The 2 game Tiger winning streak
makes them the first 20 game winner. At 20-10, they finally gained a
game on Tri City (14-16) who now trails by 6. Lowell (12-17) kept
pace and remains 7.5 games back while Vermont (11-18) falls 8.5 games
off the pace.

Tonight, another round of three game series begins. Five of the
seven series will be interdivisional as Staten Island returns home to
take on Mahoning Valley, Oneonta hits the road for a series at
reeling Jamestown, Tri City travels to Auburn to take on the red hot
Doubledays, Lowell goes from Tri City to Williamsport and Batavia
hits to road to take on Vermont. The Expos will welcome their one-
millionth fan this weekend. Lowell accomplished the feat last week.
The two divisional series have Aberdeen heading back out on the road,
where they're 10-7, to take on New Jersey and Brooklyn and Hudson
Valley begin a home and home and home series with tonight's game at
Keyspan.

Brooklyn will play 11 of their next 14 games at Keyspan Park. After
this stretch, they play only 3 of 15 at home, so if they're going to
get it going this season, now is the time to start. They couldn't
have a better opponent as the Renegades come in losers of 5 straight
and the league's worst record. Hopefully the law of averages won't
catch up with them just yet. Brooklyn went 5-3 against Hudson Valley
last season. Tonight will be the first of 10 meetings between the
two clubs this season. For the Renegades, the pitching has been the
big problem as they are dead last in ERA at 5.05 and their 295 hits
allowed is 2nd worst to Jamestown's 300. Brooklyn, who is 9th in ERA
at 3.61, is third in hits allowed with 272, but the Cyclones still
continue to lead the league with 285 strikeouts. Hudson Valley has
done OK on the offensive side. They are 4th in hitting at .252 and
4th in runs scored with 141. Auburn leads in both categories.
Brooklyn is 8th in hitting at .239 and is in the middle on most
offensive categories.

Players to watch on Hudson Valley include left fielder Joey Gomes,
who is second in homers with 5. Gomes is also tied for the league
lead in runs scored with 14. DH Shawn Riggans is batting .306 and is
third in the league with 24 RBI's. Also, in 12 games with the team,
shortstop Anselno Mercedes is batting .316. Also, 2001 Alum Luis
Candelario was re-assigned to the team this week.

Starting the game for the Renegades tonight will be lefty Michael
Prochaska (1-2, 7.20). This will be his 7th appearance and third as
a starter. In 20 IP, he's allowed 19 runs (16 earned) and 26 hits
while walking 6 and striking out 21. In his last outing on 7/14
against Williamsport, he went the first five innings and allowed 4
runs (earned) on 5 hits and struck out 7 in a 7-3 Renegades loss. It
will lefty versus lefty as Yunior Cabrera (3-2, 1.76) gets the start
for Brooklyn. He comes in 8th in the league in ERA. This will be
his 7th appearance, all as a starter, and his fourth crack at getting
his fourth win. The lack of offensive support combined with the
bullpen's inability to hold leads has hurt his record. He looked
like he would get that 4th win his last time out on 7/14 at NJ. He
allowed just 2 hits over 5 innings and left with a 3-0 lead. But
reliever Robert Paulk allowed the Cards to come back to tie it before
Brooklyn got a run in the 8th to make Paulk the winner.

The odds would seem to be in Brooklyn's favor, but baseball is a
wacky game.

While technically true that they cannot be traded before their one
year annivesary, sometimes teams will include the famous "Player to
be Named Later" as part of a deal, with the understanding that the
player is one of the new draft picks and will be moved on his
anniversary date.

2001 - After winning 12 straight, the Cyclones lost their second
straight, 5-3, at Lowell and were swept in the short two game
series. Brooklyn fell behind 2-0 in the first and made it a one run
game in the 2nd, 5th and 7th innings, but each time, the Spinners
answered with a run in the bottom of those innings to keep it a two
run game. A rehabing Brett Herbison started and took the loss. The
main bright spot was the debut of Joe Jiannetti, who arrived just
before the game and was inserted into the lineup at third base. He
proceeed to hit the Cyclones first ever inside the park homer and
drove in 2 of the 3 Brooklyn runs. He also stole a base. Forrest
Lawson had the other RBI for the Cyclones. Brooklyn's lead in the
MacNamara Division had lasted 5 days as Staten Island had not lost
since being swept by Brooklyn the previous weekend. At 20-10, the
Cyclones found themselves percentage points behind the Yanks once
again.

Something I forgot to mention in the discussion about Jason Huber.
Those
new Cyclones (draftees) who signed contracts with the Met's
organization this
year cannot be traded until next year. The rules of baseball prohibit
trades
before the first anniversary of someone signing a contract to play.
That doesn't
remove Huber from any trade list. But, some of the new faces will be
at
Keyspan till September.

Does anybody know how much the T.V. audience has grown this year?

Have there been any polls taken to determine how many homes people
are veiwing the televised Cyclone games so far this year?

Since Fox Sport Network took over, there must be a considerably
larger viewing audience.

BTW I miss Bill Daughtry. He was an exiting and colorfull
commentator.

Illegal, yep. But, even worse, it's immoral. How can season
ticket/mini-plan holders sleep at night when they're charging THEIR
FELLOW FANS as much $37.50 for an 8 dollar seat? Hell, they
may be charging even more; that is just the highest price I happened
to notice (for the 7/26 game v. SI).

If any Cyclones staff are reading this: how 'bout making the StubHub
a face-value operation? Go ahead and take your grubby 15% if you
must, but don't allow sellers to charge more than face value. What's
the argument against that? That higher prices mean a higher fee for
the team? C'mon guys, YOU'VE ALREADY BEEN PAID FOR THESE TICKETS!
The StubHub should be a service for the fans. Otherwise, it has no
purpose other than to make the team more money on ticket sales
without raising the prices at the box office. Pretty smarmy (and, as
Corey says, illegal).

Don't get me wrong; I don't begrudge the team trying to make a few
extra bucks. But ticket sales are not the place to do that. The
Cyclones merchadise flies off the shelves as fast as it comes in.
That's where the real money is. Just keep coming up with new items
and people will buy them. Echoing what someone said here weeks ago,
I don't really care what they charge for non-essential items like
clothing and food. I don't need 'em. All I really care about are
affordable ticket prices. I can always buy my cap at Modell's and my
knishes at Mrs. Stahl's.

Unless and until the StubHub offers tickets for face value only, I
see no reason to use it. We have Pat's great Ticket Exchange (plus,
I've never had a problem buying tickets before a game--either at the
box office or from a fan with extras).

In a related personal note, I start a new job tomorrow with a great
potential for long hours. Thus, I may have pairs of tickets to about
15 games (including away games at SI) available on the Ticket
Exchange throughout the season. Check in there every so often if
you're interested.

I'd settle for daily box score, player movement as they occur, team stats 2-3x a
week. Sadly, Ticker coverage starts at low-A. If they would drop down a level,
NYT could buy in and we could otherwise read their game synopsis on the
net as well. Wait a minute, we've got Alec and Pat. Maybe you guys could
sell your skills to the local papers.

MINOR LEAGUE REPORT
Mets' Prospect a Long Way From Home
By FRED BIERMAN

Most minor leaguers have fans in their hometowns who follow their
progress through the professional ranks, but JUSTIN HUBER, a top
catching prospect in the Mets' organization, merely has a lot of
confused friends back home in Melbourne, Australia.

``For most of my social friends it's very hard for them to
understand,'' Huber said. ``They could look at a book of baseball
stats and not understand a thing.''

Huber, 20, grew up playing Australian Rules Football, cricket and
golf, but also found the time to play baseball. He joined a T-ball
league at age 6 and fell in love with the game. Although his high
school did not have a team, he played for the under-18 national team,
where he was noticed by Mets scouts and signed as an international
free agent in 2000.

This season, Huber was tearing up the South Atlantic League with the
low-level Class A Capital City Bombers before he was called up on
Monday by the Class A St. Lucie Mets. Huber was hitting .294 with 10
home runs and a league-leading 72 runs batted in for Capital City.

On Sunday night, Huber caught 10 innings as Capital City defeated the
Wilmington Waves, 1-0, to capture the Northern Division's first half
and secure a playoff berth. Ten minutes after the game ended, Huber
learned that he was going from Charleston, S.C., to Port St. Lucie,
Fla. On Monday, in his first game with St. Lucie, Huber played
another 10-inning game as the Mets lost, 15-8, to the Charlotte
Rangers.

``You just don't have that much time to think,'' Huber said.

Huber was the first unanimous selection to the South Atlantic League
All-Star team since MIKE HARGROVE in 1973, and he was one of only
four Class A players to be selected to the Futures game in Milwaukee.

``It stills blows my mind a little bit,'' Huber said. ``I never
imagined I'd be playing with such a caliber of players in such a
short time.''

One of Huber's heroes growing up was DAVE NILSSON of the Milwaukee
Brewers, a native of Brisbane, Australia. Although Nilsson was not
the first player born in Australian to play in the major leagues (JOE
QUINN played for the 1891 and 1892 National League champion Boston
Beaneaters), he was one of the most popular. When Nilsson broke in
with the Brewers in 1992, two Australian players had played in the
majors, Quinn and CRAIG SHIPLEY. Since then, there have been 11 and
Huber hopes to add to the total.

CALIFORNIA LEAGUE

Tampa Bay selected outfielder JOSH HAMILTON with the first overall
pick in the 1999 draft, but Hamilton's career has been marred by
injuries. This season is no different.

Hamilton, 21, a left-hander, is scheduled to see a specialist about a
rotator cuff injury in his throwing shoulder and could miss the rest
of the season. He was hitting .303 with 9 home runs and 44 R.B.I. in
211 at-bats for Class A Bakersfield, but injuries restricted him to
being a designated hitter in 48 of his team's 56 games.

Hamilton's first professional season, 1999, ended after 96 games with
a knee injury that required arthroscopic surgery and a car accident
in 2001 limited him to just 100 at-bats last season.

NEW YORK PENN LEAGUE

Although every player at every level had to feel shocked by the death
of St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Darryl Kile last month, RYAN BICONDOA,
a starter for the Staten Island Yankees, felt the loss even more.

Bicondoa was a fourth cousin of Kile's and was about to make his
first professional start against the New Jersey Cardinals when Kile's
death was reported. Despite the news, Bicondoa went out and pitched
five no-hit innings and struck out seven to pick up his first
victory.

Bicondoa has continued to pitch masterfully. In five starts he is 3-2
with a 1.47 earned run average. He also leads the team with 36
strikeouts in 30 2/3 innings.

YUNIOR CABRERA, a 21-year-old left-hander from the Dominican
Republic, has emerged as one of the top starters for the Brooklyn
Cyclones. In five starts, Cabrera is 3-2 with a 1.76 E.R.A. and has
struck out 31 while walking only 12 in 30 2/3 innings.

TEXAS LEAGUE

JASON ARNOLD was a top pitching prospect with the Class A Tampa
Yankees before he went to the Oakland Athletics as part of the three-
way trade that brought JEFF WEAVER to the Bronx. Although Arnold was
7-1 record with a 2.48 E.R.A. with Tampa, his first start with the
Class AA Midland Rockhounds of the Texas League was inauspicious. He
went three innings and gave up three runs, two earned, before he was
replaced.

JOHN FORD-GRIFFIN, the other prospect sent to Oakland in the trade,
has also struggled for the Rockhounds, getting only one hit in his
first seven at-bats and striking out three times.

ATTENDANCE ON THE RISE

In a time of steroid talk and labor unrest at the major league level,
fans are flocking to minor league parks. In June, 7,642,954 fans
attended minor league games, the highest total for the month in more
than 50 years. Last season minor league games drew 38.8 million, the
second-highest total in the 100-year history of the minors. Despite a
slow start, this year's total trails last year's at the same point by
only 1.1 percent.

The New York Penn League has seen the largest increase at 22.3
percent. The Toledo Mud Hens, playing in a new park, have set an
attendance record with 22 home games remaining. The previous mark had
stood since 1953.

The Times generally does a rather poor job of covering the Cyclones.
There seems to be no pattern as to when they'll even include the NY-
Penn standings in a little corner of the sports page--generally this
happens a couple of times a week. Rarer still are Cyclones games
listed in the Calendar section.

During the last week, however, the NYT has seen fit to actually write
full articles about Brooklyn's pro team (granted, of course, that the
focus--until today, anyway--wasn't on the actual game of baseball,
heaven forbid). On Friday, an article about the Cyclones (rightly
criticized by Alec) appeared on the first page of the Weekend (!)
section (see message 14857). On Monday, an article about a possible
baseball strike with some Cyclones-related comments showed up on the
first page of the Metro (!!) section (see message 14951).
Yesterday's paper, strangest of all, featured the article about Party
Marty Haber on the first page of the--ready for this?--Dining Out
(!!!) section (see message 15014).

Today, finally, someone actually wrote about the Cyclones (and
former 'Clones) in the Sports section. Granted, it was just a
smallish blurb about Justin Huber and an even smaller mention of
Yunior Cabrera in the Minor League Notebook, but that sure beats the
Times' usual non-existent coverage. Would someone who knows how to
do it post a link? The Notebook is on page D6.

Let's hope that this current ink flow means that the Times is finally
starting to take notice. The fact that three of these article showed
up on front pages (although of sections you'd never imagine to
include baseball coverage) seems to indicate that the editors think
that interest is relatively high. Perhaps we'll eventually see daily
box scores and game recaps in the NYT.

Yeah, right.

The Cyclones roller coaster ride took an upturn once again as they
evened their 3 game series with Williamsport with a 7-4 win. It was
a nice bounce back performance after the tough loss the night
before. With the score tied at two in the 5th inning, Brooklyn had a
chance to blow the game open, but once again they couldn't get the
big hit. Corey Ragsdale led off and broke a 2-2 tie with his first
homer of the season. Then Jonathan Slack, Joe Jiannetti and Jay
Caligiuri all singled to load the bases with no one out. All four of
the hits came on the first pitch. But they could only get one more
run out of it, and that came when John Toner hit into a double play.
But in the next inning, the Cyclones finally got a big clutch hit
when Jonathan Slack hit a 2 out, 2 run triple which made the score 6-
2. Slack, Caligiuri, Brett Harper and Joe Hietpas all had two hits
in Brooklyn's 13 hit attack. Ragsdale also stole his league leading
13th base of the season. Haji Turay added a single. Turay continues
to lead the league in hitting with a .364 average. The offense has
been picking up lately. The Cyclones have hit 8 homers in the last 5
games for a total of 18 on the season. That ties them for 3rd with
Auburn. Hudson Valley has hit 19. Mahoning Valley, 21. Brooklyn's
team average is now at .243, 8th in the league, and 7 points higher
than two games ago. Auburn has jumped ahead of Williamsport for the
league lead at .275. On the pitching side, Kevin Deaton looked like
he might finally get his first win when he took the mound in the
bottom of the 5th with a 4-2 lead. But he was removed with 2 outs.
A month into the season, his record is still 0-0. Brandon Kentner
came on to pitch the next 3.1 innings to pick up the win and improve
to 2-1. Robert Paulk got the last two outs in the 9th to record his
2nd save.

Brooklyn's victory pulls the Cyclones (15-14) back to within 3 games
of Williamsport (18-11) in the McNamara Division. The Cyclones
remain tied for third with New Jersey, who held Hudson Valley to 3
hits in pounding the Renegades 11-2 in an afternoon contest at
Dutchess Stadium. Hudson Valley is just 3-11 at home. Speaking of
bad home records, second place Staten Island (17-12) moved within a
game of the Division lead with a 5-1 win at Aberdeen. All five of
the Yankee runs were unearned as the Iron Birds now fall to 2-10 at
home. Aberdeen remains 6 games back at 12-17. Hudson Valley now
possesses the league's worst record at 10-19, but they stay 8 games
behind.

In the Pinckney Division, Jamestown put up an 8 spot in the 4th
inning to take a 9-2 lead over Auburn. The Doubledays (18-11)
mounted a furious rally, but the Jammers hung on and finally beat
Auburn 9-8. In the other series, Mahoning Valley came up with a run
in the top of the 10th to beat Batavia 5-4. As a result of last
night's action, Auburn's lead in the division shrinks to three games
over Mahoning Valley (15-14), but remains 4 games over Batavia (14-
15). Jamestown's victory pulls them to within 5 games at 13-16.

In the Stedler Division, yesterday was the day for the top two teams
to win, and they didn't disappoint. Oneonta fell behind 3-0, but
came back to tie and then used a triple and a wild pitch to win 4-3
in 11 innings. The Tigers once again have the league's best record
at 19-10. In the other series, Tri City cruised to a 9-3 win over
Lowell. So the five game lead remains between Oneonta and Tri City
(14-15). Both Lowell and Vermont fall back to 11-17, 7.5 games
behind.

Tonight, the latest round of three game series around the league
concludes. Staten Island and New Jersey will be looking for sweeps
while the rubber game will be played in the other 5 series. At
Williamsport, the Cyclones will look for their second straight win.
Lefty Neal Musser (0-0, 1.13) will make his 4th rehab start for
Brooklyn. He pitched two innings the first two times out but went 4
innings last Saturday against NJ. Overall, Musser has been very
good. In 8 IP, he's allowed 2 runs (1 earned) and 6 hits while
walking 3 and striking out 8. When his work is done, Chad Bowen will
follow him. This will be Bowen's 5th relief appearance. He's also
started two games. Bowen pitched poorly early on, but has lately
been in a groove following Musser. He's pitched 4 scoreless innings
in his last two appearances spelling Musser and picked up his first
win last Saturday in Brooklyn's 3-1 win over NJ. Neither pitcher has
appeared against Williamsport. Going to the mound for the
Crosscutters will be righty Roberto Novoa (2-1, 6.07). This will be
his 4th appearance, all as a starter. In 13.1 IP, he's allowed 11
runs (9 earned) and 16 hits while walking just 1 and striking out
11. Most of the damage came in his last outing against Hudson Valley
on 7/13. In that contest, Novoa lasted just 2.2 innings and gave up
8 runs (6 earned) on 7 hits in a 9-2 Crosscutter loss. This will be
Novoa's first appearance against Brooklyn.

Hopefully, the Cyclones will creep a little closer to first with a
win tonight.

2001 - The Cyclones began a 2 game series at last place Lowell and
built a 4-0 lead by the 5th inning. It looked like they were well on
their way to their 13th straight win, but Brooklyn starter Harold
Eckert allowed a bases clearing double in the fifth inning to trim
the lead to 4-3. A sac fly in the 6th tied the game. On the play,
Frank Corr attempted to nail the runner at the plate, but his throw
sailed into the dugout which allowed the go ahead run to score.
Lowell added an insurance run in the 7th and went on to the 6-4 win.
Eckert fell to 2-1. The six runs given up by Brooklyn were the most
in any game so far that season. Jay Caligiuri, Frank Corr and Tyler
Beuerlein all had RBI's for the Cyclones. It was Brooklyn's first
loss since July 4th. At 20-9, their lead was now just one game over
victorious Staten Island.
