June 30th in Cyclones History - 2001-2005   Message List

Perhaps some trips down memory lane can get the juices flowing here. I stopped
updating this file when I "retired", but posting these daily takes no time and
it might provide some memories for you all. Some guys listed in this and future
posts have actually played for the big club. Some wound up hurting them.

2005 – The Cyclones began a 3 game series at Aberdeen with a tidy 2-1 win over
the Ironbirds. Trailing 1-0 after 2, Brooklyn tied it in the 3rd on a sac fly
from Jesus Gamero and then grabbed the lead for good in the 4th on an Armand
Gaerlan RBI single. The pitching took it from there, as Waner Mateo went the
first 6, yielding 6 hits, to improve to 2-0. After Kevin Tomasiewicz pitched 2
scoreless innings, Aristedes Almenar pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to pick up his 3rd
save. The Cyclones were now 8-2 (the best 10 game start in their 5 year history)
and maintained their 2 game McNamara Division lead over SI and HV.

2004 – Brooklyn's solo hold on first place lasted only a day as they completed
their home and home with Hudson Valley in an 11-3 loss at Dutchess Stadium. Will
Quaglieri (1-1), who had been excellent in his first two outings, was rocked for
5 runs in the 3rd inning and another in the 5th en route to the loss. He did
record 7 strikeouts. Five Renegades had multi hit nights in the drubbing. Dante
Brinkley had a pair of doubles in the losing effort. At 8-5, the Cyclones
dropped into a 3 way tie for the McNamara Division lead with HV and Aberdeen,
who defeated Staten Island.

2003 – Brooklyn made it 4-0 against their cross town rivals with a 3-0 win over
Staten Island as their 2nd home and home and home series of the season got under
way at Keyspan Park. All 3 runs came on 4 straight hits with 2 outs in the 5th
inning. Yunir Garcia and Rashad Parker hit back to back doubles to score the 1st
run, Cory Coles then singled in Parker and Ian Bladergroen doubled in Coles to
cap off the scoring. Garcia, Bladergroen and Coles all had 2 hit nights. The
runs came just in time for starter Matt Lindstrom, who allowed 2 hits in 5.2
innings to improve to 2-0. In 17.2 IP, Lindstrom hadn't allowed a run and had
only given up 5 hits. Carlos Muniz came on to get the final out to pick up save
#3. With Williamsport and Hudson Valley both losing, Brooklyn found themselves
alone atop the McNamara Division at 9-4.

2002 - Brooklyn and Mahoning Valley played game 2 of their 3 game
series at Keyspan. This one was a wild affair. Brooklyn came from two
runs down not once, but twice. They scored 3 in the 7th to take a 4-3
lead, but gave it right back as the Scrappers scored three in the
8th. But, Brooklyn tied it again with two in their half of the 8th
and then won 7-6 with a run in the 11th. Ender Chavez, Jonathan Slack
and Blake Whealy all had 2 hits in the game. One of Whealy's hits was
his first homer of the year. Robert Paulk pitched the last two
innings and got his first win. Brooklyn finished June at 8-5, one
game behind Williamsport and Staten Island.

2001 - The Cyclones and Cardinals went back to New Jersey for the
third game of their 4 game home and home set. The two teams had
traded shutouts in the first two games and the pattern held up here,
with NJ getting the 3-0 shutout. Brooklyn had 7 hits in the game,
including 3 by Francisco Sosa and 2 by Angel Pagan, but couldn't put
any runs across. Matt Peterson was the starter and loser. He fell to
0-2 on the season. Brooklyn was 5-7 in June in their inaugural
campaign.
