Broncos' new stable of colts

FOUR youngsters straight out of school have been included in the
first pre-season squad named by the Broncos.


Bennett has new blood to preside over.

The teenagers, all now one step from coach Wayne Bennett's elite
squad, are backs Berrick Barnes and Carmichael Hunt and forwards Joe
Clarke and Tommy Learoyd.

Barnes (Ipswich Grammar) and Hunt (Churchie) are products of the GPS
system while Learoyd is from Farrer College in north-western NSW and
Clarke captained the Junior Kiwis against Australia last year.

The only other new face in the squad is star signing from the
Warriors, Motu Tony.

The NRL requires clubs to nominate their top 25 players before Sunday
but that list is based on salaries. The 27 names released by Bennett
yesterday more accurately reflect the pecking order for first-grade
starts in 2004.

Missing from the list were Carl Webb, Ashley Albert and last-season
fringe first-graders Darren Mapp, Tony Duggan, Steve Irwin and Nick
Parfitt, who will play Queensland Cup.

The squad is: Barrick Barnes, Shaun Berrigan, Barry Berrigan, Dane
Carlaw, Tonie Carroll, Neville Costigan, Michael De Vere, Craig
Frawley, Craig Frawley, Carmichael Hunt, Stu Kelly, Tommy Learoyd,
Darren Lockyer, Casey McGuire, Brad Meyers, Scott Minto, Corey
Parker, Michael Ryan, Brett Seymour, David Stagg, Gorden Tallis,
Brent Tate, Sam Thaiday, Motu Tony, Shane Webcke, Neil Wyatt.
