SPRINGS · Since breaking his jaw in preseason, sidelined
Panthers defenseman Bret Hedican has mastered the fine art
of the blender.<br><br>"I got the thing down and
actually learned a lot about nutrition and got something
positive out of this thing," said Hedican, 31, who had
hoped to make his season debut tonight against the
Rangers but was vetoed by his doctor.<br><br>"I tried to
talk him into [playing tonight], but the five-week
line, they're not comfortable in letting me go out
there."<br><br>Hedican, who broke his jaw when the stick of Tampa Bay's
Jimmie Olvestad struck him in the face on Sept. 29, has
targeted Wednesday's home game against Pittsburgh for his
return. He will wear a protective mouth guard and cage
for at least 6-8 weeks. Hedican, who dropped 11
pounds when his mouth was wired shut for four weeks, has
regained seven since improving his diet.<br><br>"My energy
is at an all-time high," said Hedican, who purposely
endured his most physical practice Friday at Incredible
Ice since suffering the injury. "My recovery time on
the bicycle is faster, and I'm excited to see how
this carries over on the rink."<br><br>Hedican said he
owes his vitality to his favorite breakfast-blended
specialty: "I mix oatmeal with strawberries, blueberries,
raisins and wheat protein in there. Add a little skimmed
milk, grind it up and drink. It's so good."
