Carlos Barbosa Wins Intercontinental Futsal Cup, World
United Loses Close Fifth-Place match
BARCELONA (2-22-04) -Fininho scored four goals to lead
Carlos Barbosa of Brazil past Playas de Castellón of
Spain 6-3 today in the final of the Intercontinental
Futsal Cup being played at the Planet Futbol Trade
Fair.
Action 21 won third place with an 8-4 victory over
PSTC Londrinas of Japan, and Ajax de Tánger won fifth
place by defeating World United of San Francisco, 7-5.
According to reports, Playas de Castellón was unable
to win the world club championship for the hundreds of
"castellonenses" who came to the Planetfutbol of
Barcelona to give their support. The "Albiazules" fell
to a Carlos Barbosa team that was the rightful winner.
The beginning of match was filled with tension, and
there were few attempts on goal because of the fear of
making an error. The first goal came in the seventh
minute as the result of the genius of Javi Rodriguez,
who created an opportunity that Tatu only had to push
into the goal. Carlinhos equalized a minute later for
the Brazilians.
Little by little, Carlos Barbosa gained control of the
match. The Brazilians went ahead 2-1 in the 10th
minute when Fininho finished an accurate
triangulation, and with the aid of international
goalkeeper Lavoisier, the Brazilians maintained their
slim edge for the rest of the half.
Euler brought Playas back to 2-2 in the 22nd minute,
but Jonas regained the lead for Carlos Barbosa in the
27th minute. After that, the Brazilians established
their individual superiority and were never headed.
Scoring star Fininho put the game out of reach with
goals in the 37th and 38th minutes.

Action 21 won third place with its 8-4 victory over
PSTC Londrinas of Japan in a game that was considered
one of the more interesting of the tournament.
The game began with a surprise goal by Londrina's
Hasegawa in the third minute, and Londrina continued
the battle when Ochi brought them back to 2-2 in the
16th minute and Hamaji brought them back again to 3-3
in the 18th minute. Finally, André put Action 21 ahead
4-3 in the 19th minute, and the Belgians were never
headed after that.

Ajax de Tánger won fifth place by defeating World
United of San Francisco, 7-5. As the score indicated,
it was an even game in which each team tried to show
its best after being beaten handily by the other
tourney opponents. Begdouri gave the Moroccans a 1-0
lead in the second minute, but World United came back
to take the lead 2-1 on a pair of goals by Dwayne
Gilpatrick in the 10th and 12th minutes. Gilpatrick
was praised by the Spanish press for having a strong
kick, "fuerte zapatazo".
The duel continued in the second half, but Ajax was
able to take advantage of the errors by World United
and demonstrated that futsal has much improved in
Morocco.
World United continued to battle and came back to 6-5
in the last two minutes on goals by Clovis Simas and
Brian Loftin, but Abdessalam of Ajax found the net at
the final buzzer to make it 7-5.
