sanctioned world club championship tournament.
San Francisco, Calif. – February 4, 2004 – World United F.C.
www.worldunitedfc.com has accepted an invitation to participate in
futsal's first Intercontinental Cup which will take place Feb. 18-22
in Barcelona, Spain. World United F.C., U.S. men's futsal national
champion five of the past seven years, will now compete in top level
international competition.
The tournament will be organized by the Real Federacion Española de
Futbol www.rfef.es – Spain's Soccer Federation – and the Liga
Nacional de Futbol Sala www.lnfs.es – Spain's Professional Futsal
League – and is endorsed by FIFA www.fifa.com.
The Intercontinental Cup will take place in conjunction with the
Planet Futbol www.firadelfutbol.com trade fair and games will be
televised to 64 countries via Television Española Internacional (TVE
Internacional).
Six teams will participate at the I Intercontinental Futsal Cup:
Playas del Castellon/Spain (UEFA Cup 2003 Champion), Action 21
Charleroi/Belgium (UEFA Cup 2003 Runner-Up), ACBF Carlos
Barbosa/Brazil (South American Champion 2003), World United F.C.
(U.S. National Champion 2003), PSTC Londrina/Japan (Asia) and Ajax de
Tanger/Morocco (Africa).
"It has been our desire to take our club to test international waters
for some time now," said Mario Salinas, World United president, "and
when the invitation came through to go to Spain for the
Intercontinental Cup, we saw this as the perfect opportunity."
"I am familiar with ACBF Carlos Barbosa from the U.S. Select Team's
Russia Tour in 2001, the National Team played against Action 21
Charleroi at the Genk FIFA tournament in Belgium in 2002 and
satellite technology allows us to watch the Spanish League games
where Playas del Castellon games are televised," said Vava Marques,
World United head coach and U.S. Futsal National Team assistant
coach. "This will certainly help in our preparation for the
tournament".
"I am very pleased to have our national club champion participate in
such a distinguished event", said Alex Para, President & CEO of the
United States Futsal Federation. "U.S. Futsal is also happy that our
national team assistant coach will be using this tournament as
valuable training and preparation with a view towards the upcoming
World Cup 2004 qualifiers".
World United F.C. is currently seeking funding and sponsorship to
take its delegation to compete in Barcelona next month. Sponsors
interested in supporting the team and traveling to Barcelona as part
of the delegation should contact Mario Salinas.

About Futsal
While futsal was once South America's best-kept secret, it is now a
full-blown international sport with some 120 countries playing it
worldwide. The sport has already had four FIFA sponsored World
Championships. Futsal is expected to become part of the Olympic
family during the 2008 games.
Futsal is 5-a-side soccer (4v4 plus a goalkeeper, no walls) played
indoors on a basketball court or larger dimensions. Because the
sport is a great skill-developer, demanding quick reflexes, fast
thinking, and pinpoint passing, it is an exciting game for children
as well as adults. Great Brazilian soccer superstars such as Pele,
Zico and Socrates grew up playing the game and credit futsal with
developing their skills. Futsal is played with a special low bounce
ball to keep the ball in play, necessitating players to use their
skills to maintain ball possession
