I'm looking for a tagline for NYM Tours to put on the back of a t-shirt and to use in promoting the club.  We have a few ideas, but I'm open to your new suggestions.  I want something short, pithy, memorable, and maybe humorous.  Like Jill & Tim's "If you can read this I'm not on my recumbent" on the back of the BRAG t-shirts.

Stealing from Adventure Cycling, here are 9 guidelines for a tagline...

    * 8 words or less
    * Organizational impact and value
    * Accessible/memorable
    * Specific to NYM tours (general taglines about cycling not as helpful)
    * Emotional connection
    * Spirit and promise of organization
    * Complement and/or clarify organizational name
    * Authentic
    * Tone that is true to NYM Tours

Here are some ideas we came up with for the tag line...
  • Come ride with us ~ Sue Fassett
  • Earn your Artie
  • Cycling tours since 2006
  • Adventures in pedaling
  • Bicycling adventures
  • I'm not your Mom!
Here are some more stolen quotes...
  • A tour's a tour no matter how small! ~ Jonathan Voelz
  • Every part of the trail is fascinating ~ Caitlin Truesdale
  • Wheel get you there
  • Traveling by bicycle
  • Explore wheel life
  • A bicycle gets the equivalent of 3,000 mpg
  • Melancholy is incompatible with bicycling.  ~James E. Starrs
  • Cycle tracks will abound in Utopia.  ~H.G. Wells
  • The bicycle is the most civilized conveyance ...  ~Iris Murdoch
Here are some quotes that are more than 8 words long...
  • Get a bicycle. You will not regret it. If you live. ~Mark Twain
  • The bicycle is a curious vehicle.  Its passenger is its engine.  ~John Howard
  • When I see an adult on a bicycle, I do not despair for the future of the human race.  ~H.G. Wells
  • Life is like riding a bicycle - in order to keep your balance, you must keep moving.  ~Albert Einstein
  • Nothing compares to the simple pleasure of a bike ride.  ~John F. Kennedy
  • Things look different from the seat of a bike carrying a sleeping bag with a cold beer tucked inside.  ~Jim Malusa
  • What do you call a cyclist who doesn't wear a helmet?  An organ donor.  ~David Perry
Let me know.

Saw this on the Recumbent Blog and thought it was worth sharing.  A whole website devoted to home movies of recumbents.  http://www.recumbent.tv/  I watched the trikes riding the Katy Trail.  Gives you a good idea of the surface and the tree-tunnel.  Even shows how a trike's low chain line picks up road debris.

Just thought I'd let you know there's a new coffee shop at the S.E. Corner of McDonald and Granite Reef.  It's called BuzzBerry.  They have coffee drinks plus many different fruit drinks-smoothies.  Free Wi-Fi.  Almost all ingredients are from local merchants.  It's in it's new phase and they said that outdoor seating would be available in the future.  On weekends it's open until 10:00 p.m. and during the week 8:00 p.m.  It would be a nice stop off after our rides on Saturdays!  I know we have many coffee afficianados in the group!

I just love supporting local merchants!

Mary Ann Coe recommends Road ID.  http://www.roadid.com/Common/default.aspx  Not a bad idea for cyclists, especially if you are out away from home on a tour.

Here's what she said..."I lost my roadID after the crash, so I ordered some more.  Today, I got this funny and cool email (read the whole thing - I especially love the part where they tell me how smart I am!).  Anyway, there is a code for $1 off and for certain, it's a good thing to have. Pass it on if you know anyone who needs one."

Here's the email with the coupon ...

"Hello Mary Ellen:

"Thank you, again, for your recent Road ID Order.  You have made a very wise investment in your safety and peace of mind - it's quite obvious that you are a highly intelligent individual."

"We are thrilled to have you as a customer and hope that we can count on you to spread the word about Road ID. In fact, to make it fun to spread the word, we created a unique coupon for you to pass along to your friends! Here's the coupon number:"

"Coupon Number: ThanksMaryEllen568072

"This coupon is good for $1 off any Road ID order. It can be used up to 20 times in the next 30 days. Feel free to send this coupon via email, Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, town crier, or good ole fashion smoke signal."

So... who's going to be in Tucson for the El Tour de Tucson 2009? Saturday - November 21st

My wife, Tina and I will be attending and staying at the Days Inn next to the freeway near the Convention Center.

We'd love to visit over dinner with anyone who will be there for the event. We'll be arriving Friday afternoon and registering and will be available for dinner in the evening. We are also staying over on Saturday night after the event and would also join you for dinner on Saturday evening if you like. Call me or email so we can get together.

Hi,

I'm new to Yahoo groups and recumbent cycling but have been enjoying riding with
others in Tucson for the past 5 weeks.

There is a yahoo group in Tucson called TucsonRIDER but my friend & I spend most
of our online networking time on FaceBook so I created a Facebook group called:
"Tucson Recumbent Cyclists" in hopes to recruit even more recumbent riders.

Please join us if you are on FACEBOOK at:
http://www.facebook.com/groups.php?ref=sb#/group.php?gid=218810544464

I also started my own recumbent cycling blog to document my experience:

Come down & ride with us!

Interesting graphic mapping the speed records for various types of bikes from 1930 to today.  It also shows significant rule changes, such as the 1934 UCI ban on recumbents and the 1996 ban on "superman" bikes.  Looks like there is an opportunity for a new tandem streamliner to beat a record that has stood since 1979.

I hadn't heard of the WRRA.  It is the World Recumbent Racing Association.  It keeps track of speed records by unfaired recumbents.

Yesterday I posted a Sunray and Rans Cruz for sale.  The Sunray has been sold, but the Cruz is still available.  I will consider a LWB or a MLWB recumbent as a trade if it's in good condition.  I'd prefer a Status size std. or a Tour Easy size small or small/medium, but what have you?  If sold outright then I'm asking $1000.00.

I have a Sunray from Sun in excellent condition with less than 50 miles on it that I'd like to sell.  Several upgrades consist of a huge soft seat bottom, computer, mirror, and kickstand.  21 speeds that will surprise you with it's performance.  Asking $450.00.

Also, a Rans Cruz with a lot of upgrades that include hubs, wheels, bottom bracket, cranks, dual mirrors, kickstand, Rans rear rack, water bottle bracket, and computer.  Yellow in color.  Asking $1000.00 but will consider a trade for a LWB or MLWB full blown recumbent.  Preferably a Stratus or Tour Easy size small or small medium in like condition.

Email for more information or directions to see and test ride on either of these bikes.

Yoda

In honor of the 10 year anniversary of the BRAG-AZ website, join us for a celebratory bike ride and brunch.  This will be a joint ride with Kokopedalli.  The ride will start at Chaparral Park, NE parking lot at Jackrabbit & Hayden at 10am on Sunday, November 15.  We'll ride to a N. Scottsdale park to stop for a picnic lunch.

If you will be attending, please RSVP to tla85258@... by Friday 11/13 with the number in your party so I know how much food to buy.

The BRAG-AZ website was a spin-off from the BRAG recumbent club.  BRAG was founded in 1997 by Doc Culver of Bike Emporium (BE) and three recumbent customers, Rich Belcastro, John Carey and Glenn Mathis.  According to John,  Doc came up with the BRAG (Bent Rider Arizona Group) acronym, although I don't remember Doc riding on any club ride.

I got my first recumbent and started riding with BRAG in May 1999.  By then Jim Mayer was working at BE and leading the rides.  If I remember rightly, at that time we only had Thursday night rides every other week, and a couple Saturday rides a month.

We scheduled rides every Thursday night in mid-1999 about the time Jim left to start up Recumbent Central (RC) at the 16th St & Maryland location.  1st, 3rd and 5th Thursdays and Saturdays rides started at RC, and 2nd and 4th Thursdays and Saturdays the rides started at BE.

The website started on Nov 15, 1999 with about 30 subscribers, of whom seven have stuck with us for all 10 years with their original email addresses!  Can you imagine all the BRAG-AZ email they've had to delete over the years?  The website has over 4000 of them in the archive, which works out to a little more than 1 per day.   If you don't already to get them, but would like to, send an email to brag-az-subscribe@yahoogroups.com.   If you get them but have had enough, send an email to brag-az-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com.

In August 2000, the Bike Ride Across Georgia (BRAG) notified ABC that we were violating their service mark by using the BRAG acronym and ABC, shuddering in fear of a lawsuit, dropped us as a chapter.  In case anybody official asks, we now call ourselves BRAG-AZ, the name of our Yahoo Group.

Jim moved his shop to 7th Ave and Dunlap on Feb 1, 2003.  Mark Gregory was the RC ride leader. Tim and I rode every Thursday night from BE, occasionally riding West to meet Mark's much larger group.  After Jim closed up shop in July-August of 2005, Mark continued to lead rides from RC until he moved to Washington State in August 2006.  When the RC rides ended, more members began to show up for the Thursday night BE rides.

What are your memories of the early days of BRAG?  How did you hear of BRAG?  What got you interested in recumbents?
