I drove out to California to escape the heat.  I planned to stay with my folks until the weather cooled down in Scottsdale.  I guess I brought the hot weather with, because it's been 100+ here ever since I got here.  Yesterday it was 107 - I thought I was back in Phoenix.  Today is hot again, and you can see and smell the smoke from fires all over SoCal, the first of which I saw start when I was driving W on the 210 freeway last Tuesday.

No riding yet, but I brought my bike and have Wendy and Mike's ready to go.  Maybe a ride up to Chatsworth Park tomorrow morning.

Friday night: Hay! It's only 84 degrees riding weather tonight! That's cool. Yesterday it was too hot for me to ride with you guys. I ride everyday in the hot noon sun and then ride home at night from work. Now, maybe it's cooling down. Hope to see you soon.

Derris Elger sent me this tip about wood framed bikes.  Thought the rest of you 'wood' be interested too.  See email attached below.

As for me, I'm finally back on the road.  Thanks to Tim and Betty for hosting me for the last month while the RV was being repaired.  Picked up the fixed RV today in Osseo, WI and drove to Minneapolis.  Hope to be home in AZ in about a week, after a visit to the Black Hills to see Mt Rushmore, Devil's Tower & etc.  Keep up with the pix from the trip on Picasa at http://picasaweb.google.com/tla85258

Keep cool.

tla

Hi Tom,

Thought you might get a grin from this, a wood frame bike that seems to work.

The computer aided design software used to design these frames is SolidWorks, a software package that I am very familiar with.  Sidenote: Paulo at Catrike also uses this software and its companion product, Cosmos finite element analysis software.  Cosmos takes the file from the design and analyzes where the weak points are.  When you add more material at the weak points it shows if it is strong enough and how much it will flex under different loads.  If these wood frames were not legit, I would expect that the hacks that designed it would have no knowledge of these software packages.  Who knows?

Derris Elger
formerly from Prescott, now Tucson

P.S.  Thanks for the travelogue and pictures earlier in the summer.  Sorry about the mishap with your RV.

The project features a 10-foot concrete and 4-foot stabilized DG path along the south bank of the Arizona Canal. It will provide a critical link within the regional path system including Crosscut Canal, Arizona Canal (including the Sun Circle Trail and Papago Salado Trail), Indian Bend Wash, and Rio Salado along the Salt River. The path will be the final gap connecting Downtown Scottsdale with the Papago Salado area. Many destinations in Downtown Scottsdale will be within 1/4 mile of this project. The path will be a comfortable, safe and convenient transportation option for pedestrians and bicyclists.
