Date:   Tuesday January 1, 2008
Time:   8:30 am - 9:30 am
Notes:   Tuesday 1/1/08 8:30am Kiwanis Park.
The Captain's Ride. A one size-fits-all moderately paced roll around Tempe, in the general direction of Lehi. Mileage doesn't really matter and will be determined by The Captain. (And if you are silly enough to not know who The Captain is, well, you better just get yourself to this ride.) Hang-overs optional. Breakfast at Einstein's, northwest corner Guadalupe and McClintock.

The ride from Chaparral Park on Sun 1/6/08 is cancelled on that day only.
Instead, you are encouraged to ride the short route on the Casa Grande Century
on the same day.

Cost for the flat 34-mile route is $10, and you get a rest stop, sag support
and socks. If you want to try the Metric Century (62 miles) or full Century
(100 miles) the cost is $25 and adds lunch and a raffle ticket.

Registration is 8:30-9:30am at the Safeway parking lot at 4970 S. Alma School
Road, Chandler. It is on the northwest corner of Alma School Road and Chandler
Heights Road, 1 mi. N. of Riggs Rd.

I will snowbirding in East Mesa (Sunland Spings) for four months
starting January 1. I would like to go on or organize regular weekday
and/or weekend rides during the day.

The rides might be 30 to 60 miles at a 14 to 18 MPH pace with a stop
for coffee/snack/lunch during the ride. I don't drive so it would be
best for me to start and finish in the east Mesa area. Upright bikes
would certainly be welcome.

Is there anyone out there who would like to participate or knows of a
rider group that meets all or most of those general conditions?

I'm changing a front fork from a 16" wheel to a 24" wheel so I can use my WE
Electric wheel
hub motor. The top part of the fork is 9" long, which is longer than most
forks. I can easily
use a 26" wheel fork and just shorten it or I can try to extend the ends of the
present fork but
If I find a new fork with the 9" "stem", it seems like an easier mod. but so far
most forks I've
seen have shorter stems.
Anyone have any suggestions or know of an available fork? thanks, Mike

You could switch to upright for uphills, but I think the extra weight of the
conversion mechanism would offset the climbing advantage of the upright
position.

My mistake. I thought those painted lines on Oak St were a bike lane. See pix
at
   http://picasaweb.google.com/tla85258/2007_1216ParkedBlockingTheBikeLane

I was informed by Reed Kempton that "The facility on Oak is not a bike lane
and parking is allowed in the area to the right of the edge line. The vehicle
should not, however, be blocking the sidewalk." He further explained what the
white line is: "It is space to the right of an edge line. There are no bike lane
pavement markings or signs designating the space as a bike lane."

According to the Scottsdale Bike Map, Oak St is a bike route (yellow), but
doesn't have a bike lane.
http://www.scottsdaleaz.gov/Assets/documents/traffic/bikemap_section_1.pdf

Actually, that's good news. I don't like riding in the gap left by the
traffic calming island anyway, as collects trash that can cause flats and it
can't be cleaned by the road sweepers.

Alas I have taken up triathlon and gotten back on the road bike and
so my poor strada sits forlorn in the garage. Rather than see it so
forlorn and lonely I would like to find a good home for my trusty
friend. If anyone is interested I would be willing to part with it
for $1000.
It is a medium size.

Has a johnson carbon aero fork.

650c Xero wheelset

Has a carbon seat with a minor blemish on the back (near the top it
has a crater in the carbon but does not affect the seat (as told to
me by bacchetta when they sent it to me) I have many many miles on
it and have never had a problem, you just need to keep that part of
the seat covered to protect the carbon fiber resins from the UV).

I also have the full meshbacked seat that originally came with it if
that is your preference (both are included in the deal).

With this is a fastback hydration system that carries two camelback
reservoirs (in new condition, I used them once I think).

It comes with bar end shifters that don't quite shift up into the
lowest gear but I still have the grip shifters that came with it and
those are included in the deal, I will even install them if you
want.

Also included in the deal are a Baccetta Brainbox (seat bag) and a
Bacchetta OFA bag.

For an extra $100 I will throw in the generator wheel (shimano n71
dynamo hub) that I have been using with it.

It currently does not have the flipit stem on it but I can put that
back on without too much trouble.

Anyway, let me know if you are interested.

Looking for a bike tour this summer? I can recommend GITAP. GITAP is the
week-long Grand Illinois Trails and Parks ride which Jane & Paul and Wendy and I
rode in June of 2007.

The GITAP-08 tour is Sunday, June 15 to Saturday, June 21, 2008, starting and
ending at Sauk Valley Community College in Dixon, IL. You’ll ride prairie,
hills, and Mississippi River shoreline through small towns and one large one –
the Quad Cities – using a mixture of green trails and low-traffic roads (for the
most part). You'll be overnighting at three superlative Illinois State Parks.
The basic route covers about 300 miles, but added mileage extras will allow for
as many as 550 miles for the week.

Accomodations are tent camping in state parks, with a motel package available
at an additional cost. Showers and luggage transportation provided. Breakfasts
and dinners are included – and, of course, a T-shirt, emergency sag, bike
repair, and refreshment stops when needed. (An optional jersey will be for
sale.) There are nightly meetings featuring ride info, occasional
entertainment, and door prizes. Optionally, you can sign up for the Velosophie
"book club" discussions. All this for only $375! (motels extra).

For more information, see their website at
http://www.bikelib.org/gitap/2008/index.htm
and read my trip report of last year's ride at

You're invited to join us for the 6th Jane & Paul Tucson Tour. It will take
place in February 2008 for 4 days over the President's day weekend, from Friday
Feb 15 thru Mon Feb 18, 2008. We've moved the date from MLK weekend in January
in hopes of having warmer weather.

The route is ~240 miles over 4 days, about 60 miles per day. This year we will
ride a counterclockwise loop, staying in motels in Casa Grande, Tucson, and
Florence.

The ride is self-supported, meaning you carry your own bike tools & spares,
snacks, water, clothing, etc. This is NOT a club-sponsored ride and there is no
entry fee. We should have a SAG vehicle, and we will share the driving, with
everyone taking a turn.

If you are interested in bike touring, this is a good way to get started. If 60
miles per day sounds intimidating, do some of the organized metric centuries and
you'll be ready. You
set your own pace and can take as long as you need. The route is fairly flat
(except day 3's climb to Oracle Junction). We take good roads and avoid traffic
as much as possible.

Here is the itinerary:
Fri Feb 15, Scottsdale to Casa Grande, ~55 miles.
Sat Feb 16, Casa Grande to Tucson, ~57 miles.
Sun Feb 17, Tucson to Florence , ~64 miles.
Mon Feb 18, Florence to Scottsdale, ~61 miles.

If you would like to join us, RSVP me at tla85258@yahoo. com with your rider
names and cell phone numbers. I'll send you more details, including the motels
to reserve at and what to bring, but remember, "I'm not your Mom!"

PMBC and ABC are invited to join BRAG-AZ for the 3rd Annual Zoolights night ride
to the Phoenix Zoo on Sunday 12/16/07. We will start riding about 5:30pm from
Randy's Restaurant, 7904 E Chaparral Rd # 210 (NW corner of Chaparral & Hayden).
You can learn more about Zoolights at
http://www.phoenixzoo.org/events/zoolights.shtml

If riding at night is an issue, not to worry. This is a good ride to
practice on. It is a short 6 mile ride and we will ride mostly along bikepaths
at about 10mph. We will have experienced night riders leading and sweeping.
Make yourself and your bike visible with lights, blinkies, reflectors, and light
colored clothing.

Join us for dinner at Randy's before the ride at 4:30pm . Bring cash or a
check - Randy's doesn't do plastic. There are snack bars at the Zoo, but they
are not recommended. You can also bring snacks along with.

This is a night ride, so you'll need layers of warm clothes against the cold
and bike lights to ride at night. The more lights, reflectors and blinkies the
better. You can dress in the holiday spirit and decorate your bike as well!
Don't forget a pair of walking shoes. Flat pedals and tennis shoes will work.
You don't want to be stumbling around for a couple hours on Look cleats!

It's only 6 miles from Randy's to the Zoo via IBW, Oak & Crosscut Canal
bikepath. The route map is at http://www.routeslip.com/map.php?map=16233 We
will stay an hour or two and should be back at Randy's before 9pm.

Please RSVP tla85258@... so I have a headcount for tickets. Tim is a
Zoo member and can get some tickets at the gate for $6, or regular admission is
$8.

   Hope to see you there!

I'm selling two of my recumbents. The first one is an EZ1-SX that has been
converted from the standard 16" front wheel to a 20" front wheel. It's also
gone from a 21 speed to a 24 speed. I don't know what year it is, but it seems
to be fairly low milage. Included in the sale are 2 water bottle brackets,
kickstand, computer, mirror, rear rack and bag, and, of course the original 16"
fork and wheel with the tire. It's red in color. The seat is in great
condition. It does have a few stratches here and there, but nothing
significate. I'm asking $450.00 for it. I'd prefer not to ship.

The second bike is a 2007 Cycle Genius Sparrow. In great condition with only
about 150 miles on it. Included in the purchase is 2 water bottle brackets,
kickstand, rear mirror, and computer. It's Navy Blue in color. I think it's a
shame that Cycle Genius has not been recognized for their bikes. I was
surprised at the performance of this little CWLB. 24 speeds and it gets up and
goes. I would definitely recommend this bike over the EZ1. I'm asking $600.00
for it. Again, I'd prefer not to ship.

Reason for selling---It's time to upgrade. Need to sell both bikes in order to
buy the next one.

Safe Rides,
Yoda

Buy separate or as a package. These items are basically new. Used 1
time. The rack is a hitch mounted heavy duty HOLLYWOOD rack that was used
to haul the EZ SPORT AX. The bike has only a couple miles on it and is a
limited edition aluminum bike with the better components. It also has a
never used bike bag on back, computer, bell, mirror. $650 for bike only,
$80 for bike rack or get both for $700 even. this is more than 1/2 price.
Would make a good xmas gift. Buy now before I put this on ebay. No low
ball offers please. email me back if interested. Joel

I am selling a new EZ sport AX aluminum bike way under value for an older
gentleman who bought the bike , and whose legs couldnt handle the hills in
his North Scottsdale neighborhood. He has had the bike in his garage for
6 months and finally asked me to sell it for him. He estimates he put one
mile on the bike He also has on the bike a computer, rear bag, bike bell,
slimed tires and spent almost $1400 with tax on this bike- now 1/2 price.
I am also selling my Rans V2 thats several yrs old for $750, and I also
have several Rans seats in various conditions to sell as well. If
interested, reply to this email. Thanks JB
