My old buddy J came by the office the other day to ask
about recumbents.
J is a brain tumor survivor. He crashed his new car when
he had a seizure and blacked out. The front end was
smashed and the airbags went off. His seizures are getting
more serious, more frequent and coming without warning.
When he went for his regular checkup, his MRI showed a big
blood clot filling the space in his skull where the tumor
was taken out. The Dr. said he must have hit his head
really hard. He didn't remember hitting his head during
the accident, but he knew that was it. It scared him to
realize he could have killed others and himself by driving,
so he's decided to give up his license and stop driving.
Realizing that without a car, his transportation options
are limited and he was complaining about the lousy bus
service. I pointed out that since he lives in Tempe, he
has the best bus service of any city in the valley. I gave
him a pep talk and a new bus book.
Then I told him he didn't want a 'bent, he needed a trike.
I know, you don't believe me, I could hardly believe it
myself! But he'll kill himself for sure if he has a
seizure on any 2-wheel bike. He can still get himself
killed on a trike, but the chances are somewhat reduced
because it is much more stable.
I recommended the EZ-3 ($725) and the WheelWiz Terra Trike
3.5 ($2000). He was astounded that he'd have to spend $800
or more - it's been a long time since he bought a bicycle!
J gave me a call today. He just got home with his new
EZ-3, and was about to ride off on it to Landis to buy a
lock and some other goodies.
Next step is to get him started with a bike club so he
learns safe riding technique. No doubt he'll soon be
adding his mileage to the PMBC club total at
