I talked to Jim this afternoon. He did get sick and was brought back
from Kayenta by his son, but he's out of hospital and on the mend.
He started riding his Longbikes Slipstream, credit card touring,
destined for Colorado. Day 1 was from home to Anthem. Day 2 he rode
from Anthem up to Sunset Point. He said the climb to get there "is a
bitch." It was very hot, and he was following I-17, and said it was
no fun. He got there about noon, and realized it is a long way to
the next stop, so he turned around and went back to Black Canyon
City. He called his son Andy, who drove him up to Flagstaff.
The first day's ride out of Flag was OK, but his health started
deteriorating. He was laid low by a combination of exertion at
altitude and bronchitis. On the 4th day out of Flag, he had serious
breathing problems, and only did 12 miles to Kayenta. Since it was
70 miles to the next stop, he decided not to continue. Rather than
go into the reservation hospital, he called Andy to take him home.
He'll be recovering for the rest of August, and will not be making
another long ride - at least not this month. He says next time he
may try the Pacific coast route, where he doesn't have to do the ride
at 5-6,000 feet. You'll probably see him at the RC ride tomorrow
morning.
Get well soon!
