Former champ Alexis Arguello was found dead of a gunshot wound to the chest. He
was recently elected mayor of Managua, the capital of Nicaragua. Sad day for me
personally, as he was one of my all time favorite fighters and, thanks to my
inlaws who are from Nicaragua, sent me a personalized photo for my bday last
year.
While I am entertained by fighters like Ricardo Mayorga, Alexis Arguello was
everything that was right in boxing and represented the best of Nicaragua. His
class, courage and humility were always an inspiration and though he did have
his deamons outside the ring, he showed the same will and courage he exhibited
within the ring outside it as well. He conquered his drug problems and rose back
to the top culminating with his political victory last year.
Join me in mourning the passing of a true man within, and outside, the ring.
Did you guys see the battle between Victor Ortiz and Maidana? Wow, what a
battle! Is this a "career ender" for young Ortiz? Or a "Hard Lesson
Learned"?...
I agree with Dan. I have always liked this fight...been clamoring for it for awhile. I think Hatton does have a better chance at beating him than Oscar did. But I think that it does get stopped on cuts with Pacquiao winning. It'll be a great matchup!

I think this is going to be a very exciting boxing match! And, I think Ricky Hatton has a great chance to win this one... if his skin holds up and doesn't get stopped on cuts! Other than that, I see it as a "pick'em" fight! What do you all think?

Hello everybody,
I just joined this website. I am posting this message in your group because I
have recently
launched an actors website both for professional actors and people with special

he can
find your profile. The website is www.actorama.com.
Check it out,

I also thought Oscar would win just though sheer size and natural
body weight... I have NEVER been so wrong! I pictured Oscar towering
over Pacman, but they didn't look that much different in size. I
kept having flashbacks of Alexis Arguello in his last matches against
Scott "Pink Cat" Walker, and Jorge Palomares. Just lacking reflexes
etc.

Interesting...though I think the major problem this year was scoring. And our amateur team doesnt seem to be up to par with international athletes. Besides, as we all know the amateur sport is a different gameplan as the pro ranks, I dont think pros would necesarily do that much better.

In my HUMBLE opinion, Jr is a bit overrated. He is a solid fighter, better than the average 'son of a legend', but there seems to be something lacking. Granted, he has hardly any amateur experience, but he cant expect to step into the ring and win fights based on his name alone (which he has seemed to have done twice now in his career!). He seemed soft and out of shape during the Vanda fight. While I had him winning by a round, I could have been easily swayed a couple of rounds and given a draw. Heck, I wouldnt even argue if it was given to Vanda on a SD. But that 100-90 score was horrible, and that judge should be barred from judging any furthur fights (or be punished by watching John Ruiz' career fight collection).
If Jr. bears down and trains properly, lays off the great mexican food, and drops back down to 147 where his height is an advantage (or even stay at 154) he can make a bit of noise. He is blessed with his father's chin, as was evident that night when he took some shots from Vanda and only seemed to be staggered due to exhaustion. But I really have a hard time seeing him beating guys like Forrest (though if he fights like he did against Mora, I guess there IS a chance), Oscar, Daniel Santos, heck even Cory Spinks.
Maybe he has bad luck fighting on Azteca TV. His lone draw (which SHOULD have been a loss, imo) was on Azteca. As the recent Ring article pointed out, he should be fighting on network and cable tv more often and drop these PPV fights against mediocre opponents in order to gain some exposure. Would have been great for him to fight on the undercard of Margarito-Cotto or other MAJOR PPV undercards.
JCCjr is a solid fighter and I dont rule him out as being a prospect with a future. But he is still young and his lack of amateur background hinders him. Casual fans will see a loss on his record as proof that he is overrated. But as many great mexican fighters have shown, experience is gained with early losses to nameless fighters and that doesnt translate to an ended career. These guys are a different breed, learning their craft on the battlefield. However, I feel that Jr. doesnt have that luxury unfortunately and that isnt his fault. His name doesnt allow him to stumble. Combined with his already high television exposure, he is under the microscope. All that remains is his desire and work ethic to help him. Based on how he looked after the fight, shoulders slumped, face in dissapointment and also what he said (he hinted at retiring), I dont know if he has it in him.

Did anyone see the Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs Matt Vanda Fight from Mexico on Sat.? JC Jr. got PUNISHED! It was a close fight, but even the Mexican fight fans didn't like the split decision for Julio Jr. Booing, and throwing beer and objects at him! It wouldn't have been so bad, except that one of the judges had it 100-90 (10 Rds. to 0!) for Julio. Jr. had his head down as they read the scores and then popped up when they announced his name as the winner. If you hit Chavez Vanda in the youtube search box, I think someone posted the decision there. What do you think? Is Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. a "Contender" or "Pretender"?
I believe Julio Jr. is a real contender, his Dad would not let him fight if he did not think he was legit. Hey Boxing Guru tell your DAD that the great Mando Ramos from Long Beach, Cal died in his sleep last Sunday 7/6/08 at the age of 58. My Father in Law mailed me the LA Times article and obituary today. Man talk about memories.
Hugs to the Ladies in your life and GOD BLESS.

There is no way boxing will leave the map. I like MMA, but I will never collect those fights. I will watch it when I can, but that is all. MMA needs 50 to 100 more years, it it lasts, to make a difference.

What do you guys think about the rise in popularity of "Mixed Martial Arts"? Could it mean the end of pure boxing as the favorite combat sport in the USA and the world?
IMO it wont end boxing, but it will probably surpass it in its popularity. It attracts the mainstream or casual fan who just want to see blood and violence. However, technical or true fans will appreciate the 'science' of boxing. Compare it to baseball...casual fans think it's a boring sport. True fans know the technicalities and the game within the game. And baseball will never die; it may have been surpassed by football as the national pastime, but the numbers are still as strong as ever. The same is true with boxing; if we can bring boxing back to network television and clean the sport up, perhaps with a national commission (which will probably never happen), and maybe find a few athletes to act as the face of the sport, then boxing can rise up and be nearly as popular as it was back in the 80s and before.
But that's just my opinion.

I'm really surprised at the responses! I agree that I would put my $
on Holmes in this battle, but I really thought that most would take
Marciano based on legend & rep. I like Holmes by U. Dec. and a very
busted up Rocky Marciano!
I think Holmes controls the fight with his jab, as Marciano attemps in vain to get on the inside. If the fight isnt stopped on cuts (TKO9), it goes the distance to an easy UD win for Holmes.

I like Larry Holmes jab in this one. Holmes does not get credit for that great jab. He did not fight the tough guys Marciano did, but if styles make fights. I like Holmes.

Larry Holmes without a doubt size and reach being the main factors.
Even on his way down Larry gave Mike Tyson (in his prime) a little work
before taking an overhand right.
