THE GURU'S BOXING MUSEUM
http://angelfire.com/nm/boxingmuseum
I appreciate that you wouldlike to see some of my old fights, but my biggest regret in life so far is that I have nothing on tape of myself. I am now 32 yrs. old with two small children and all I want is to be able to show them myself in action. I never took the time to even take photograph's of my fights. I guess a part of me thought that I would be doing it forever and never thought about it. The only things that I have are a few Newspaper clippings ( in which my name is spelled incorrectly) and some of the sparring footage with Vinny. I fought as an amateur on and off from 9yrs. old to 13. And really took off after I graduated high school. From there I fought in the Southern New England Golden Gloves reaching the Semi-Finals in 93 and 95. The first time I was legitimately beaten while the second time was Highway Robbery. Then I continued to fight on cards throughout New England for the next few years while juggling College courses. Then my
Daughter was born in 1999 and I had mty last fight in 2000.
Right now I have my own Boxing Web-Site www.koartistboxing.com, where I cover Boxing News and stuff. I also trade and sell DVD's. The site is still a work in progress as I built it from scratch on my work computer. But I would love to interview the "Boxing Guru" sometime and let the New England area introduce themselves to you. and vice versa. The site has been up since February and already has almost 1800 hits. I know all the N.E. fighters very well and we are trying to set something up as far as interviews to hype their fights. For instance a friend of mine is Super Middleweight Joey Spina, he is fighting Jesse Brinkley from the contender at Foxwoods in a few weeks. Spina trains in Vegas with Eddie Mustafa Muhammad, he is going to call me when he gets back in town next week and we're going to do something together.
So it would be my pleasure to
get together and tell the peole about "The Boxing Guru". We need more people like you in the Boxing world giving it a good name and less of the negative people always putting our sport down. Thanks Dan.
Sincerely
Brian Pennacchia

Brian,
I have to say that I like your 5 faves too. Vinny Paz will always be one of my favorites and could have easily been in my top 5 too! When
I first started collecting autographs from boxers for my little boxing museum, I wrote to him, and didn't hear back for a while, but one day there was a big yellow envelope from PAZ! He sent me a nice letter with an autographed 8x10 and an autographed boxing card too! I think he's a great character from the ranks of pro boxing, and I know many think he's "Too Cocky", but I think he's one of my favorite boxers of all time, not only because of his heart and skill, but I think he has a good heart as a person too!
Say Brian, you said something about YOUR boxing days... Did you fight Amateur? Pro? Do you have any video of your fights? I'd love to see them, and maybe put them on my public access boxing show (if you'd like). Let me know!

Hi everybody,
My 5 Favorite Boxers are in this order:
1-Evander Holyfield-The way he was always the smaller guy and would show such heart and determination in every fight was truly inspiring.
2- Vinny Pazienza- Lived five houses away from his gym in Providence R.I.. first met him while throwing a Tennis ball up against the wall
of his gym as a sort of outfielder's practice. The man who came out to see what the noise was? Lou Duva. He sent me to the store for him,let me keep the change and introduced me to the"Next World Champion" Vinny Pazienza. From there I became a fixture inside his gym. I would start my own Boxing career shortly thereafter, and would later serve as a Sparring Partner for Vinny in his fights with Joe Kiwanuka and Esteban Dejesus.
3- Sugar Ray Leonard- Terriffic speed, always found a way to win and for a flashy speedy kind of fighter was a killer when he had you in trouble.
4- Rocky Marciano- The pride of all Italian-Americans
5- Floyd Mayweather jr.- Unbelievable skills
Five least favorite:
Naseem Hamed
Lennox Lewis
Ian Gardner
Zab Judah
Julio Cesar Chavez

I can start this, and I think 5 is a small number but here are my 5:
FAVORITES OF ALL TIME: 1. JOHNNY TAPIA - I've known Johnny since I moved to New Mexico back in 1988, and he's always been kind to his fans, takes time to sign autographs and visit with them. Johnny will always have a special place in my heart because when our Son died in 1998, Johnny called us from Big Bear, CA to see how we were doing and send his
respects.
2. ALEXIS ARGUELLO - I think Alexis always showed respect to his opponents, and through his personal problems still took time to be polite and kind to the fans.
3. BOBBY CHACON - Even through his personal problems, he was very popular when I was a youngster growing up in the L.A. area. He always stopped to talk with people at boxing events and remained friendly throughout his career and after!
4. AARON PRYOR - Aaron was pretty cocky and always played "The Bad Guy" during his prime boxing career. But he's really proven his self to be an honest and caring person these days. "The Hawk" has been very active helping others, and has always responded to my contacts. He's a great story of someone who has turned their life around. I think the world of him.
5. RAY MANCINI - Ray was always easy to root for. He is friendly and takes time for his fans too.
----------------- My "Least Fave
Five":
1. PERNELL WHITAKER 2. ZAB JUDAH 3. MIKE TYSON 4. NASEEM HAMED 5. LAILA ALI
I'm sure my top 5 favorites will come as no surprise to the ' BOXING GURU' seeing we grew up together going to the old "Olympic Auditorium" in downtown Los Angeles @ 18th and Grand, not to mention the big championship fights that were held at either the Los Angeles Sports Arena or the "Fabulous Forum".
1. Salvador Sanchez- World Champion - Pound for pound could not and was not beat, he had a shy boyish grin, always came across as grateful for the opportunity to be interviewed. I remember when he did a exclusive interview for a then up and coming publication known only in Calif as "Lowrider Magazine". At his early and untimely death the NFL Hall of Fame coach John Madden called Salvador "the finest athlete he had ever seen" after watching Salvador's training routine for a Championship defense in Las Vegas.
Salvador always did his talking in the ring.
2. Julio Ceasar Chavez - World Champion - Outside the ring friendly, engaging loves his fans. Inside the ring "all business" unbeatable by anyone in his prime, proved that in one of the greatest comebacks against Medrick Taylor who was clearly outpointing the Champion before his devastating knockout at Ceasar's hands, to look at Ceasar's calm focus before the 15th is something I will never forget. Julio never ducked any fighter or hid behind his belt, he was ready as Champion to defend against any and all comers His only mistake which is common in many of the great ones is he fought way to long and lost to 'Palukas" that would never have had a chance against him in his prime.
3. Larry Holmes- World Champion- The most underrated and unappreciated heavyweight of our time He was awesome in his prime and never ducked an up and coming
opponent. Inside the ring knew how to take advantage of his size and reach to keep his opponent at bay until he could land the knock out punch. He is loved and respected by those who know him best in his hometown of Easton, Penn. I dare say that the only other Heavyweight that may have had a chance against him in his prime would have been "The Greatest" in his prime. and even though Larry beat the greatest, he would be the first to tell you that Ali was way past his prime when he beat him, as Larry was way past his prime when he lost to "Mike Tyson". .
4. Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini- World Champion - Exciting to watch, you could not help but root for him. He had a great respect for the sport and the opponents he faced. But in the ring it was "Bombs Away" A great TV presence and not a bad color man for fights. His downfall came after he killed the South Korean fighter he was never the same after that.
5. Cassius Clay aka Muhammad Ali "The Greatest"- World Champion- What he accomplished in the ring speaks for itself. But what he has done outside the ring is unmatched by any other athlete in the world. Whether you agree with his stands or not, no one can argue that he was not passionate about the stands he took and more than once risked all he owned to defend his right to say what "America" in that day did not care to hear.
5 LEAST FAVORITE
1. Mike Tyson- Great talent, ungrateful, disrespectful and typical spoiled athlete. Proved he was not that bright when he joined up w/ Don King, and turned his back on his team that made him what he was. Cus would be so disappointed. it was truly the beginning of the end and Mike himself now knows that looking back.
2. Sugar Ray Leonard- Overrated, always waited for the big name opponents to be on there way out
before he fought them. Beating Thomas "Hit Man" Hearnes was the only legit championship fight he ever won. Duran #1 Ray was humiliated, Duran #2 was a fixed fight and I believe on his dying bed Roberto "Manos de Piedra" will confess he took a dive in that one. Duran #3 Roberto was 3 months from collecting Social Security, okay maybe not 3 months, but he was old. And lets not forget how long he ducked "Marvelous Marvin Hagler" , not until the old man Roberto Duran went the distance with Hagler did Ray decide to make a comeback. Ray a world class opportunist.
3. Parnell Whitaker- Overrated, Sugar Ray Leonard light.
4. Gentleman Gerry Cooney- Fighter cmon, he laughed all the way to the bank.
5. Fernando Vargas- Awesome talent but lacks true sportsmanship, does not give the proper respect to those who have beat him legit.
I have to say that I like your 5 faves too. Vinny Paz will always be one of my favorites and could have easily been in my top 5 too! Hi everybody,
Just wanted to let you know about our fight on Fri night Feb. 24th at
The Isleta Casino & Resort at Isleta NM (near Albuquerque).
Our guy- CESAR GUTIERREZ (Holguin) made his Pro Debut against local
favorite- Willie Villanueva, who was also making his pro debut. We
lost a 4 round decision. Much controversy, and there has been a
protest lodged to have this decision changed to a "No Contest". Both
fighters fought well, and I couldn't have been prouder of Cesar! The
young kid who turned 18 on fight night had the look of a seasoned
professional. Never lost his cool even though he suffered a broken
nose in the 2nd round! He dominated the 1st round, and The 2 Woman
Judges gave that round to VILLANUEVA!!!???? The other rounds were
close! Isleta Tribe Commission inspector DID NOT ALLOW US TO USE
ADRENALINE CHLORIDE 1/1000 FOR THE BLEEDING! He said it wasn't "Legal
here"... After the fight, the Ref said it is, and the head of the
Commission said it was legal! Manager/Trainer Dan Cushner has filed
a letter, we'll see what happens! The 2 Lady Judges scored it 40-36,
or 4 rounds to 0 for the Local Kid.
If any of you would like to see this fight, send me your address, and
I'll put you on the list for a dvd of it!
Thanks for your support! We hope to have Cesar fighting his 2nd pro
fight on May 5th Along with our other boxer- World Ranked
Featherweight Jayla Ortiz, possibly for some kind of title. We'll
keep you posted, and you can check us out at our website...

Just a suggestion Dan whenever you travel internationally you should always inform and be aware where the U S Consulate is so that they are aware of your itinerary for your own security. In many of these countries people just disappear, sounds to me like the "fix" was in from the time these fights were set up by the "Trinidad boxing authorities". Glad you made it home safely Buddy. Subject: Trinidad WIBC titles This is to clarify the position of the WIBC regarding the fights on September 23, 2005 and to state the irregularities of the events only on that night. This will be brief as there is litigation brought forth by the WIBC against a number of parties relative to the fights that night. To begin with, I arrived in Trinidad at the airport on September 22, 2005 at approximately 1:34pm so as to make the weighin that afternoon-which had been moved from 11am to 5pm. After arriving, there was no one to meet me there and after two hours of calling the promoter, ABC Boxing Promotions aka ABC Boxing Academy, I was instructed to take a taxi to their office-which I did and arrived about 4:30pm. I asked to be taken to the weighin so I could certify the weights of the boxers, go over the
rules, and have the boxers sign their WIBC Title Defense Agreements. One of the promoters, Glen Gadsby refused to take me to the arena until approximately 7:00pm that night-after most of the boxers had left and well after the weighin was over. The WIBC requires that a Supervisor be in attendence to certify the weights of all title fights. In our opinion, being barred from the weighin is enough to keep the title fights from being sanctioned. It was only the beginning of many problems to come. Upon leaving the arena, I arrived back at the hotel only to see the newspaper headlines that day detailing kidnappings in Trinidad. I go to the hotel only to find out the promoter did NOT pay for the room at the Kapoc Hotel but promised to do so later. They allowed me to check in forunately and within minutes of getting to my room, the telephone rings and a voice states "This is a friend-do not leave your hotel this evening." At first I thought this
was a joke, then when I went downstairs to eat dinner-at my own expense-which was supposed to be paid by the promoter-a gentleman at the bar advised me to be careful as his boss's son was kidnapped a week ago and just released after a large ransom was paid. At that point, I became a beleiver and stayed in the room. The next morning I go to the promoter's office to have him sign updated sanction agreements and collect all the balance due for sanctioning, belt usage fees, memberships, and gloves I brought since the promoter had NO gloves for the fight. I stayed all day only to be told that they had no money to pay the balance of all fees due nor could they pay for the hotel room, even thought the Trinidad and Tobago Boxing Board assured me on the telephone and in the newspaper that they would guarantee the WIBC would receive all monies due. Since the last flight had already left Trinidad, I was stuck and had no choice but to try to give a
semblance of sanctioning for my own safety until I could leave Trinidad. I told the promoters that due to the fact that they could not pay their obligations and the boxers would not sign the title defense agreements, I would take the belts back to the U.S. and upon everything getting in order with agreements, monies, etc. the WIBC would then send all the boxers the belts and I needed all the boxing gloves back since payment was not made for them either. Two of the promoters, Glen Gadsby and Ken Smith agreed. Upon my arrival of the arena, I was told by the Boxing Board that they did not collect the monies owed to the WIBC, that I could not sign off on the wraps or gloves, see the weights from the weighin, have the judges fill out WIBC scorecards,or have any WIBC member officials judge or referee. Obviously, something was awry. At the first WIBC title fight between Liz Mooney of the United States and Iva Weston of Trinidad, Mooney totally
dominated the fight. Even so, she was behind on the round by round scoring as I sat at the official's table-I could not beleive it. Then in the 10th and final round, Mooney knocks down Weston who falls into the ropes and cannot get up-until the referee HELPS her up!! Otherwise, she was finished! Even Chairman Taylor of the Boxing Board stated that "that cost Weston the fight." Even so, the Judges scored the round a 10-9 for Mooney until I pointed out that that was a 10-8 round due to the knockdown. Begrudgingly, they wrote it on the "notebook sheet"-not the official score sheet. I was keeping the round by round scoring and Weston won by a split decision. I go into the ring to present the beltto Mooney-ceremoniously-since I was taking the belt back-and there was a massive delay-the ring announcer states that the "judges are trying to get the scoring right." I wait and finally the decision is announced-a split decision victory for Weston! i
walk over to the officials table and asked them "what in the hell is going on?" They told me to shut up and go sit down. At that point, I called the United States and talked to 2 members of the WIBC Executive Committee about the situations that had occurred thus far and was told to pull all sanctions and leave when I could. At that point, there would be no WIBC Champions crowned the night of September 23, 2005. While I waited for the right opportunity to leave the arena, the next fight was beginning with Teresa Peruzzi and Scroller Carrington. Since I was not allowed to see scoring or be at the officials table, I sat with the U.S. Marines that I had invited and watched the fight. Peruzzi won when Carrington's corner stopped the fight. I go in the ring to present the belt for pictures and as did in the previous fight and afterwards asked for the belt back. Peruzzi and her corner refused to hand it over and at that point the Boxing Board
Chairman and Promoter came in the ring, blocked me away from the fighter, and told me to leave the ring and the belt. At that time, I stated publicly that these fights were a farce and there were no official champions on this night. As I was leaving, Peruzzi's corner yelled at me to "go have sex with myself" and with or without the WIBC they were the champion and were going to keep the belt and defend it in Bermuda. At that point, my driver called and said he was there to take me back to the hotel. I left and watched the rest of the fights on television. About 3am, there was a knock on the room door, and hotel security was there with 2 constables who asks me to go with them to the police station to answer some questions about the incidents that night. I was not under arrest nor was I detained but asked to cooperate. I went with them, showed them the contracts signed, showed them where monies were not paid, showed them that the WIBC did
NOT sell belts but charged a belt usage fee so that there was no theft, and I was told they were finished, they thanked me for my cooperation, apologized for any inconvenience, and I walked out. I was never handcuffed nor put behind bars. I returned to my hotel about 5:30am, where I had hotel security accompany me to the room where I saw my room had been gone through, documents and newspapers were missing, and the sliding glass door on the patio was open. I grabbed my suitcases, went downstairs, paid the hotel bill which the promoter never paid, met my driver, and proceeded to the airport. Upon my arrival, I got my ticket, proceeded to the gate, got on the plane and waited for takeoff. Just before the airplane door closed, airline security asked me my name, I told them, and they asked me to deplane, which I did, and there were 2 constables from the airport police station there to question me. I asked to have my bags removed from the plane,
they were, and I went with the constables to the police station at the airport. Again, I was not arrested nor detained but asked to cooperate. At no time was I treated poorly by the police nor handcuffed. Upon my arrival at the police station, one of the promoters, Boxu Potts was there-again making false allegations against myself and the WIBC, I explained to the constables the situation, showed them all contracts and monies paid to date, the belts, and how they were NOT sold. They stated that the situation was a civil matter, wished me well, and I proceeded back to the airport to get a ticket for the next flight back to Atlanta. Four hours later, I got my new ticket and I was asked to wait for airport security again. I did, and they told me the police needed more information from me. There were no police there, I walked freely to the police station, and all they wanted was contact information from me for their records. Five minutes and I
was gone. I then proceeded to the gate where I waited to board. Since I had not slept for 2 days, I was dozing off when I was tapped on the shoulder by a constable who informed me that he and his 3 colleagues were from the Fraud Squad and had some questions and would I come with them. They stated it would be quick and I would not miss my plane. I told them no problem, went with them to a conference room, showed them my passport, showed them all documents, gave them copies of the documents, gave them my contact information, and they thanked me and hurried me back to the gate to catch my plane. Again, at no time was I ever under arrest or detained forcefully and the Trinidad police were polite and professional and open minded. They knew that if I missed the plane, I would be stuck until the next day so they hurried with their questions. I got on the plane, changed planes in Miami, and returned home to Atlanta the same night. Upon my return,
I met with the WIBC Executive Committee and we officially declared the 5 "title" fights in Trinidad "non-title" due to all the irregularities that occurred-including but not limited to failure of monies paid (which was to be paid 60 days in advance), no WIBC Supervisor at the weighin, no official WIBC scorecards used, no checking of gloves or wraps, no WIBC Supervisor seeing the Trinidad scorecards after the first fight, no boxers completing WIBC membership forms or signing WIBC Title Defense Agreements, and inproprieties occurring the entire evening. A statement is being forwarded to Fight Fax, Inc. stating that these are non-title fights and asking that they be stricken from the record book. All boxers and their management are urged to contact the WIBC regarding each individual case in regards to review and appeals procedures. The WIBC nor its affiliated sanctioning bodies will not sanction any title fights or allow title fights to be
held in Trinidad or Tobago until the entire boxing board is replaced and assurances are in place that boxers will recieve proper, fair, and responsible scoring in future fights. Finally, the WIBC is in possession of documents showing that members of the Trinidad and Tobago Boxing Board are representatives of other sanctioning bodies as well as on the Board of Directors of ABC Boxing (the promoter)which obviously shows major conflicts of interests. Even the Guyana Boxing Board was not paid US$900.00 for airfare and expenses for bringing in a fighter for the card-there were no checks and balances in order there and without a doubt the most reprehensible night of boxing I have ever seen.

This won't be the 1st time Islam has been used as motivation by a fighter in the boxing ring, with the exception of Muhammad Ali in the 60's and 70's as a member of the nation of Islam. The first Evander Holyfield Mike Tyson fight, a reference was made by either Tyson or someone in his camp to the fact that it was going to be Tyson's Allah against Holyfield's Jesus to see who's servant would get the victory. When Mike lost the fight, if I remember correctly he also said he was considering retiring from the fight business. Does anyone else remember this fight hype/controversy. EDKARZ

I think he had 1 fight after the loss to Barrera, and that was it.
A friend told me that the Arab Mafia had threatened to kill him if he fought again, because of the disgrace he brought to the Muslim Religion after the pre-fight thing he did with the speech about there being only 1 true God - Allah, and then getting WHACKED by a Catholic believer!!!!!
I don't know if that's true, but I'm just curious about what happened to him and why he hung up his gloves after losing 1 fight!
