In my HUMBLE opinion, Jr is a bit overrated. He is a solid fighter, better than the average 'son of a legend', but there seems to be something lacking. Granted, he has hardly any amateur experience, but he cant expect to step into the ring and win fights based on his name alone (which he has seemed to have done twice now in his career!). He seemed soft and out of shape during the Vanda fight. While I had him winning by a round, I could have been easily swayed a couple of rounds and given a draw. Heck, I wouldnt even argue if it was given to Vanda on a SD. But that 100-90 score was horrible, and that judge should be barred from judging any furthur fights (or be punished by watching John Ruiz' career fight collection).
If Jr. bears down and trains properly, lays off the great mexican food, and drops back down to 147 where his height is an advantage (or even stay at 154) he can make a bit of noise. He is blessed with his father's chin, as was evident that night when he took some shots from Vanda and only seemed to be staggered due to exhaustion. But I really have a hard time seeing him beating guys like Forrest (though if he fights like he did against Mora, I guess there IS a chance), Oscar, Daniel Santos, heck even Cory Spinks.
Maybe he has bad luck fighting on Azteca TV. His lone draw (which SHOULD have been a loss, imo) was on Azteca. As the recent Ring article pointed out, he should be fighting on network and cable tv more often and drop these PPV fights against mediocre opponents in order to gain some exposure. Would have been great for him to fight on the undercard of Margarito-Cotto or other MAJOR PPV undercards.
JCCjr is a solid fighter and I dont rule him out as being a prospect with a future. But he is still young and his lack of amateur background hinders him. Casual fans will see a loss on his record as proof that he is overrated. But as many great mexican fighters have shown, experience is gained with early losses to nameless fighters and that doesnt translate to an ended career. These guys are a different breed, learning their craft on the battlefield. However, I feel that Jr. doesnt have that luxury unfortunately and that isnt his fault. His name doesnt allow him to stumble. Combined with his already high television exposure, he is under the microscope. All that remains is his desire and work ethic to help him. Based on how he looked after the fight, shoulders slumped, face in dissapointment and also what he said (he hinted at retiring), I dont know if he has it in him.

Subject: [boxingonvideotape] Chavez Jr. vs Matt Vanda Sat. 7/12
Did anyone see the Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs Matt Vanda Fight from
Mexico on Sat.? JC Jr. got PUNISHED! It was a close fight, but even
the Mexican fight fans didn't like the split decision for Julio Jr.
Booing, and throwing beer and objects at him! It wouldn't have been so
bad, except that one of the judges had it 100-90 (10 Rds. to 0!) for
Julio. Jr. had his head down as they read the scores and then popped
up when they announced his name as the winner. If you hit Chavez Vanda
in the youtube search box, I think someone posted the decision there.
What do you think? Is Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. a "Contender"
or "Pretender"?
