Hey guys,
I agree we should have a group meet, if we have a couple people
working on this now, we should be set by the time the season starts.
Let's pick a Saturday or Sunday that the people who want to help can
meet up, we'll make a list of bars and come up with a game plan. (and
have a couple beers too....) Saturdays work better for me as I play
football on two teams on Sundays, but, depending on the Sunday, I can
work something out. I won't be around Memorial Day weekend, I'm
going home to pick up a piece of furniture I bought at Eastertime.
(also going to pick up some Yeingling...woo hooo!!!)

To my knowledge, Champions doesn't have their own lot. You'd have to find
on-street parking or park in a garage. Parking on Comm Ave is never fun,
but it's better on Sundays than during the week. Tonic and/or T's will
probably be fine for parking. I was in the basement room of Tonic before
it was Tonic. The room would work, but I can't speak for the
establishment. What time do they open on Sundays?

Ok, when/where do people want to meet. Maybe some time next weekend?
(I know I'm out the weekend of May31/June1).
My guess is that the overall preference for picking a place to watch
the games would be somewhere near where the Depot is. We need
somewhere that has decent parking for those of us who drive in, and
still reasonable accessable by public transportation.
I think that the place near Copley would be sort of painful for those
of us who drive, unless they have their own lot -- anyone know?

I emailed the head of the Florida Gators Club in Boston yesterday
and got a response back. They used the room on Saturday's until
last season when they made the decision to leave based on the way
they were treated by Depot management. I asked where they moved to
and here's what they told me:
Hi Tim,
Yes, we did leave the Depot for that
reason, and as extremely dissatisfied
customers. We were there for about 8
years and gave them untold amounts of
money. I'm secretly hoping that the fact
that they're changing means their bad
business skills drove them out of
business. The manager there is a
first-class you-know-what.
Last season, we watched our games at T's
Pub at 973 Comm Ave in Allston. It's
worked out well for us as we don't
compete often with their main crowd, the
BU undergrads. The owner, Steve, and his
staff have been very helpful. T's is
right by the Babcock stop on the green
line's B train. Parking in the area
isn't as good as the Depot but is
reasonable.
I also happen to know a few big-time
Steelers fans who hang out at Champions
in the Copley Marriot. Don't know
whether that information's of any use to
you or not.
Good luck to you.
BGC Secretary
As to how the relationship was built with the Sports Depot...I was
lucky that a few people who remain as part of the original group
from 1996 (Al Weiss, Jed Lippert), a small group had met there
before, so the manager at that time (Sheldon) certainly knew who we
were eventhough it was only about 10 people each Sunday. They when
we put the word out more this grew to over 30+ people each week. So
initially we did nothing that special to build the relationship with
the Depot, just people showed up on Sunday's and I ALWAYS got there
early just to hold our room. This changed about a year ago when we
offically met with Depot management to now "reserve" our room each
Sunday.
Hey, guys. So, I ran into Corey today and we did a minute of brainstorming...
He says he caught the game at McCarthy's (Boylston, across from the Pru), and they may be fairly accomodating. He also threw out Tonic (just up Comm Ave by Allston St.), which we at first thought was way not the vibe of a sports bar, but they do have a room downstairs that they don't use during the day nor on weeknights. It has two large High Definition screens with good sound. It may be a good place to check out because they dont really use the room-- put an offer out there to use the room, buy food (don't know if it's very much football food, maybe a problem), and buy drinks. Jeremiah works there too.
Anyway, we can probably throw out tidbits about where we've caught games before until the Bengals win a Super Bowl, but we won't get anywhere. The best plan is probably to have a group meet, make a game plan of how to approach bars, decide where to check out, send people to meet with management, then see what the results are. From there you can compare which bars seem feasible, whether we can meet up with our end of the bargain in their eyes, etc. Tim-- what was the process of establishing a relationship with the Depot? A little knowledge of that process could aid this one.
And the tattoo is on my back.

hi everyone,
wow, i didn't know about the sports depot closing... I'm open to anywhere but
obviously somewhere bigger would be better I think. whoever said Atlas might be
a possibility, definitely check into that! I've actually heard the Place is a
great location to watch games, so maybe someone should look into that? Although
that might not work cause people who drive in wouldn't have a place to park...
just trying to brainstorm. but the idea of getting a large club is good cause
they would be able to have a room most likely with sound
Dan
you rock!

Goodness, suddenly everyone's awake!!!
I watched a couple of games at the Common Ground before I came to the
Depot, it wasn't too bad, there is a group of guys that go there
every week that are pretty friendly, and we didn't have any problems
watching the game (except the playoff game when the patsies beat us,
then there was a bit of a brawl). The food was good, but the place
is kinda small. And last I knew, they got rid of Guinness on draft.
=(
If there's anything I can do to help find a new place, let me know.

I was at the Sports Depot just yesterday for the first time since
the last Steelers game. The manager was not there, but I asked the
female bartender about what would be happening. It was confirmed to
me that they are changing it into a seafood restaurant, but they are
keeping the current menu and simply adding some seafood dishes.
The renovations are to begin after the Celtics season is over (which
I guess is tonight :)...I never liked them) or sometime around June
15th. She asked me if we would be moving to another establishment
and I told her I certainly didn't have the time to go around to find

had with numerous individuals, it certainly tends to wear on me. So
in essence, my enthusiasm just isn't what it used to be and some
others are going to have to step up to find a potential new place.
I was approached prior to the 1st game last year by a former Sports
Depot bartender and native Pittsburgher who worked up the street and
offered to cut a deal between us and them. We had already worked
things out with the Depot so I saw no need to pursue this avenue,

Last season, after refusing to purchase a card, my boyfriend and I went to
the Common Ground. (We spent more there than the $40 that the 2 cards
would have cost, but it's the principal of the thing). Anyway, the game
was on, but there wasn't sound. I think Scott's right; the Pats take
priority. It's a pretty small place, too, so we'd almost fill it. I vote
that we keep that in mind but explore other options.

Hey,
How's everyone enjoying the offseason? I've been to the Depot a few times
since the season ended and here's what I know. They're definitely closing
by the end of June, and they're changing their name to Captain Fishbones.
I believe there's one in Marina Bay also. Also, they're changing the back
room to a winery, so they say. And most importantly, they're getting rid
of all the satellite dishes. When the new place opens, they will have 4
TV's and it'll be a much more formal setting.
I do know someone who watches the Steelers each week at the Common Ground,
and he's said great things about the place. I do recall him saying the
Steeler games are a top priority and they do come with sound. I've never
been there, so I'm only telling you what I've heard, but that may be our
best bet right now, since it's fairly close to the Depot. Oh he also told
me, you DON'T have to purchase a gift card there. Maybe relocating will
get the Steelers back to the Bowl, where they belong!!

Although I
missed much of last year's drama due to the fact that I traveled for two
and half months straight, when I returned for a game towards the end of
the season I was very disappointed in what the Depot had done. Goodbye
Depot and good riddance!! The place
down the street from the Depot is named the Common Ground. There has been
a Steelers group that has met there for a long time. Although not as big
and as friendly, they are loyal fans. The Common Ground has much better
food and service than the Depot. Additionally, it just added another big
screen. The downside is that it is smaller and when a Partriots game is
on, it always gets the sound. However, the Steelers always have top
priority when the Patriots are not on. I do have
another idea which I would be happy to explore. The Big Ten pulled their
business out of the Depot last year during college football season due to
the fact that they were experiencing a lot of the same unfriendliness
that we were. As a result, Atlas, a bar/club near Fenway, offered to
divide its establishment up and provide viewing for each alumni
association's respected game and therefore won a lot of business.
(I am a Penn State alum.) I was thinking of contacting Atlas and seeing
if they would accommodate our group on Sundays. I think location-wise,
this would work out much better for our group as everyone would not have
to go downtown. Please let me know what you think.
Go
Steelers!!

I was approached prior to the 1st game last year by a former Sports
Depot bartender and native Pittsburgher who worked up the street and
offered to cut a deal between us and them. We had already worked
things out with the Depot so I saw no need to pursue this avenue,
but now maybe the time for this is at hand. I don't know the name
of the place, but it's very near the Sports Depot.
The Sports Depot also told me they were not sure what would be
happening to the back room. It may still be in tact after
remodeling, but this would have to be asked to the Sports Depot
management.
Tim
Champions is across from the Pru, in the Marriot on Huntington Ave.

Has anyone contacted Champoins? I think that a group of us needs to
get together and look at places -- try to find somewhere where we can
make sure we have our own room, with sound.
Where exactly is Champoins, anyway?

Interestingly, the Depot's not changing owners.

Champoins is in copley square. I don't know if that will be the new meeting
place? I ojust threw it out there.
UI guess it will be up to the group to decide.

I had heard that the Depotmight be closing and another report that it might not.
Sorry to hear the bad news. Enjoyed my first and last year at the depot. I live in the Worcester area, and it was great to find a Steelers meeting place. I had always seen the Steelers games, but with less fans and no sounds on the games.
Just where is Champions? Is this the place everyone will flock to?
I found out yesterday that the Sports Depot will be closing by the
end of July. It will re-open in August or September as a fish
restaurant.
Looks like we're heading to Champions.
Completely agree about Polamalu. We didn't give up too much when you
consider we had to jump 11 spots to land him. With Polamalu and Taylor,
we're essentially replacing Lee Flowers and Hank Poteat with two guys that
can run a 40 in less than 4.4. That'll be a tremendous improvement over
last year. We needed speed, we drafted speed.
St. Pierre was a reach. But then, any fifth round QB is a reach. Was
Ragone even available when we picked there? If they're committed to Maddox
for the next few seasons, which they appear to be, QB wasn't a real priority
position -- apart from the need to have a third one on the roster. JT Wall
is basically an insurance policy for Dan Kreider, who's in the last year of
his current deal. Overall, I think it was a pretty solid draft for us. But
I also think the other teams in our division had as good, if not better,
drafts than we did. Especially Baltimore.
