Thats a great story on the bike ride Paul. I'll pass on the Albuquerque info. You might also want to join boomerang_talk as they are a much larger group and much more active. The link for that is:

Hi All,
I've been making and throwing boomerangs since 1985. It's been 23
years now. I started out by reading 'Boomerangs, How to make and Throw
them'. I have forgotten who the author is. The book came
plastic-wrapped with a nice throwing 'rang. Also, I once rode a
mountain bike from southern New Mexico to Seattle. Since I did'nt have
any money to do the ride, I made and sold 'rangs to get there. Best
time of my life.

A Murphy-area man intends to ship about 40 boomerangs to the USO for distribution to U.S. soldiers overseas.
Boomerang enthusiast and manufacturer David Fantone said he expects others from around the country to contribute - six boomerangs here, 10 there, maybe 100 total.
The contraptions might help soldiers, airmen and sailors overcome boredom, Fantone figures.
"They say the boredom is unbelievable," he said. "You've got nothing to do."
Fantone, 54, said he got the idea about the donations, and then posted an online message on a boomerang talk group on Yahoo.com, seeking contributions.
He contacted the USO - United Services Organizations - in Washington, D.C., which agreed to distribute the boomerangs.
About half of his donations include new boomerangs, while the rest are used ones that he has outgrown.
Fantone has taken his boomerangs to Wayne Owen Fighting Arts, so youngsters could write their name and hometown and messages on them.
The boomerangs are easy to carry and can be used indoors as well as aboard ship, Fantone said.
He has dubbed his effort "Boomerangs for Baghdad."
Already I have gotten feed back from the article. a cash donation was placed in my paypals account and will be used to buy more wood to make even more to ship out.

Thank you all for your donations. Any news media that comes from this project will be posted.
Not all boomerangs will be shipped to Baghdad, some will go to other places over seas, but I was assured they will all be in American service men and women hands.
yesterday I wrote to the USO about getting Boomerangs in the hands of our troops over seas for sport and entertainment. here is the response I got: ------------------------------------------------
Rev. Fantone,
Thank you for your inquiry. Can you tell me how many that you have? I may be able to distribute them for you to our troops in Iraq, Afghanistan and Kuwait.
Thank you very much for your support and I look forward to hearing from you.

I has seen a report on the news about our speci al forces over there ( Iraq) playing soccer with the locals and they were getting there behinds beat. soccer is their national sport and the locals had the home court advantage.
I figured here is a chance where the boomerang community could get out and maybe get some international exposure as well as doing something for others. I'm not sure how this will work, but I figured, "it's all good".
above is the response I got from the USO. right now I haven't any details, I think we may make them up a we go along or as advised. the bottom line is I / we are looking for donations of boomerangs. new or used. they should be a beginners type of boomerang. the more donations we get the more our chances of getting noticed. I ' m also requesting any CD or DVD's with instructional or how to materials on them we can pass along as well. any instructional hard copies on paper will help as well.
right now I am not sure if they want us to send everything to the USO address or what. I think it will depend on just how many boomerangs and materials we have to send. Juston is waiting to hear back from me as to 'how many' we will have to ship.
if you wish to donate anything to this cause, please contact me as soon as possible with a number or list of what you have in mind in donating.

three strip-lam / lap joint booms. Ash, Walnut and Mahogany woods
were used. flew first time out and test flight were way to much fun.
I kept them heavier than what I would think is normal. they all need
a hard throw. I didn't want to make them so light they flutter
away or crack on any impact. these are the real deal. I an no
judge of distance, but I am guessing the biggest one is making 40+

Don't mean to sound like such glad hander. It just was good to see you enjoy yourself so much. Mike is a rightious dude also and to see you guys cranking away at Aussie Round Intemediate was something. I was rooting for you guys! If I wasn't videotaping "I coulda been a contender!" also! David, you would have cleaned up. A guy with your skill would have won all round in the intermediate division.

Hi David!
There was so much going on at the beach tourney that I really
didn't have time to break out all but one of the Bears. Space was
limited at the little beach on Easter weekend. I managed to produce 15
of my own Whishhbones by Friday afternoon, having been occupied with
an order for Dana, and barely got the opportunity to throw them with
all the contests being run all day long and the field in use. I
haven't had a chance to throw any of the mini booms you sent me David.
I will next time I get out to the field. Most likely tomorrow. I did
get a chance to throw your Jovial on Sunday evening with some of the
guys however. It's a good fun flier but too beautiful to carry in my
bag regularly.
I have to admit that the highlight of the entire weekend for me
were the three nights I spent partying and socializing with the star
athletes/fellow boom craftsmen that I've conversed with electronically
for the past 8 years but never met in person before then. For me that
was priceless. I did show everyone Your Jovial SL lap joint boom
http://tinyurl.com/2rdknq each evening however and they were all
extremely impressed and passed it around for a good look.
I've been a horrible athlete all my life and that may be why I
have little interest in competition sports and why I got involved with
boomerangs, the one-man sport. I feel a little guilty for relaxing so
much at the event and for getting there so late. We all had our own
objectives that day. Morri didn't pick up a camera all day and Dana
didn't partake in the games. But I did a little of both :)
I arrived on Saturday just before lunch break and after an hour of
L.A. weekend traffic, finding parking and multiple trips unloading the
supplies, chairs and booms that I brought, I pretty much just kicked
it with visitors for the rest of the afternoon. I offered to give a
throwing lesson at lunchtime but Morri insisted on doing it himself
because it was a personal friend of his. Later he asked me to give a
lesson and I eagerly did. Sold 2 booms too! :) I helped mark the field
a little bit too for the last event, which I also played in. Without
any direction or request for assistance everything appeared to be
under control so I enjoyed visiting and being the spectator. I would
have liked to conduct a boom building class/demo. Maybe next year.
My Mom and some relatives even showed up (a first!) and I taught
an aunt how to throw a Darnell Trifly (her first real throwing-boom!)
after introducing her to Eric himself, who happened to be sitting in
one of my chairs at the time. Dan Johnson from Wisconsin and Mark
Weary from Phoenix (where I have family) were so gracious to warmly
approach my Aunt DeeDee and tune her new Trifly for her. What class!
Even for me it was a very busy weekend. I don't know how Morri and
Dana do it!
Dana, I'm really sorry to hear that you've been under the weather.
I know pulling off this weekend's event must have been stressful and
taxing for you. I really think you should try to get more rest and
sleep. It seems like you work around the clock. Even though I've been
making and testing booms regularly, having been off work for a while
my energy level has been quite lower than normal.
By Sunday afternoon, after selling some and giving a few booms to
friends that I hardly (if ever) see, I had a few left over that I had
intended to decorate for the beach boom event but ran out of time. I
gave 5 more out, sending them in different directions of the country
for review. Well, after a weekend long discussion on aerodynamics and
boom physics (among other related subjects) the guys who were at
Randy's house were very pleased to receive them and they made it a
point to go once again out to the beach for a trial throw. I got all
positive feedback from the pros and saw my booms flying like I never
had before! I think they liked em for what they are :)
David, here's a little constructive critique on the booms of yours
that I've thrown. Your Designs and craftsmanship are outstanding but I
think you could use a little more development in the area of tuning
and airfoiling. Everyone has their own style of crafting and also
throwing but generally speaking, a good flying boom is one that's user
friendly to nearly anyone. I would practice with plywood to make your
trailing edges longer but mainly with a more shallow angle and not
such a sharp edge. leaving 1mm of thickness on the trailing edge
allows a space for the passing air on the upper and lower surfaces to
reunite more harmoniously. Just an observation I've realized over the
years. When I met up with the boom community in 2000, I thought my
booms were great because I had nothing to compare them to. Now that
I've acquired a small collection and have done some study and
experimentation and had some superb mentoring from list members, my
booms look and perform considerably better than they did back then.
You should try to get in contact with Doug Dufresne of Outback booms
as Dana suggested. He was one of the very best mass producers of strip
lam booms ever before he recently retired from boom production. He
might give you a few pointers. I love your booms but I think they
could perform as well as they look.

Beautiful stuff Dave. The Strip lams alone are exquisite and then

Dana
yesterday I up loaded a couple photos in the Bear Boomerang Photo
Album of a boomerang I have been working on for a while. The hold up
was that I wanted to 'get-it-right' and do some research on how to
proplery inlay 'stuff' in a boomerang. After a lot of good
suggestions I came up with useing a router bit in the dripp press. 2
people are required for this project.
While one holds the press down the other moves the boomerang on the
table and useing the back support arm of the drill as a stablizor
just about anything can be done.
now all I have to do is more of them and get better at it. This one
is my first attempt at anything like this. so you will see some
imprefections in the mounting.
The Alaskan Jade was given to me as a gift to inspire me to do more
than use copper wire to hide my glue marks and such on lap joints.
THANKS PAT.
The wood is Oak, Cherry and Walnut. The design is just something I
threw together in one of the forms I like. I made it extra long and
at the last 3 inchs of each arm they are both tweaked out, but only a
few almost unnoticable degrees (long story there).
glue: Ace Hardware 6 min. gell. Epox.
range: Will let you know. Test flight before jade was 35 yards
approx.
class: just for FUN. Rec.
