Re the UW's announced reasons to close Picnic Point to bicycles, something's not right . Erosion could be curtailed by banning bikes, but garlic mustard can be spread by human shoes. Ban walking/hiking, too? Better solution to erosion would be to get the local WORBA (Wisconsin Off Road Bicycling Association) chapter involved and put into place the same type of erosion-preventing trail construction successfully in place elsewhere.

OLD SAUK ROAD CLOSED BETWEEN TIMBER LANE AND PIONEER ROAD

 By Mike Gengler, RideChair

As we learned returning from the Black Earth Hilltopper on June 26, Old Sauk Road between Timber Lane and Pioneer Road is closed for construction for the foreseeable future.  According to the Town of Middleton, through which Old Sauk Road passes, the new road will be widened by 4 feet from Timber Lane to Swoboda and by 8 feet from Swoboda to Pioneer.  Although the road will not have dedicated bike lanes, the wider traffic lanes will improve bicycle safety.

What to do in the mean time?  The official detour is to take Timber Lane to Mineral Point, Mineral Point to Pioneer (there is a church on the corner) and Pioneer back to Old Sauk.  Note that Twin Valley, used on some rides as a connector from Old Sauk to Blackhawk leaves Old Sauk in the construction site, so it should not be used.  Much of Old Sauk has been widened and is probably a safer route than Blackhawk at this point for most of its distance.

This incident points up the importance of ride leader scouting of the complete route prior to printing cue sheets.  Club policy requires the leader to drive or ride every part of the route within a few days of the ride.  The map and cue sheet must reflect a safe and open route, even if changes must be made at the last minute.  For example, fresh pea gravel ona downhill should result in a reroute. Water over the road, if more than just a very short distance, should result in a reroute.  We once rode past abridge out on Spring Valley, but the contractor had conveniently positioned boards across the creek so that we could carry our bikes to the other side.  This event provided amusement rather than emotional reactions.  The ride leader who is on the scene has to make the call.  Erring on the side of safety is never incorrect.

I will be individually notifying all leaders of rides to the west of this situation.

Below is a detour that is suitable for cyclists.  Because we most frequently use Old Sauk Road as a return route, the detour is clocked from the intersection of Timber Lane and Old Sauk.  However, if you are using Old Sauk to leave Middleton or Madison, you can reverse the entries, starting from the intersection of Pioneer and Old Sauk.  Please read the note below about the residential neighborhood through which you will be riding.

Note:  Street signs are visible but are hung low, made of wood and need to be watched carefully.  This route goes through a residential neighborhood with streets designed not to accommodate through traffic.  Therefore, you must make frequent turns.  Also, please go slowly, use caution and show good road manners because you will encounter cars exiting driveways and children playing in the road. Homeowners on these roads are not accustomed to significant bike traffic.

Usually as ride chair I do not recommend a particular ride -- they are all great
(as is Sunday's Aztalan ride led by Linda Seamars)! However, I do want to put
in a good word for Ann Pollack and Jan Hansen's Saturday ride from Paoli. We
moved this ride to a better date (it was in September) so that more people would
be able to participate. The route is very scenic, somewhat challenging, and
passes through areas that we do not visit on any other rides. Also, you get to
go to New Glarus for treats. I hope to see you there.

I received a follow up call today from the Town of Middleton about the detour.
The town advised me that all vehicles, including bicycles, that attempt to pass
through the construction area (even to Twin Valley) will be ticketed if caught.
Please follow the "official" detour or the detour posted on this site if using
Old Sauk.

REMINDER! Please attend tonight's meeting to tell the City of Madison that you value bicycling. This is an important opportunity for demonstrating that bicycling is a vital part of the city budget. Amanda White from the Bike Fed will be at the meeting and will have 20by2020 buttons and "I Bike Wisconsin" stickers to help bicyclists stick out in the crowd. Look for Amanda in a white Bike Fed t-shirt if you'd like to wear one of these.

See you tonight!

MADISON ACTION ALERT!

Hello Madison Bike Fed Members and Supporters,

Mayor Soglin and other city leaders want to know what city services are important to you! The City is hosting five different Community Budget Conversation meetings to better understand what city services Madison residents most value and how we want our tax dollars spent in 2012. The best opportunity to tell the city that bicycling is important to you is at the August 16 meeting. Mayor Soglin, most city alders, and key city staff will be attending.

This is a critical opportunity for everyone who cares about bicycling in Madison. Please attend the meeting and tell the Mayor that bicycling is a major priority for you. These meetings are attracting audiences of 100 - 200+ people. Let's show our city leadership that hundreds of Madisonians value bicycling! It's going to be a tough budget year, so your support on the 16th is vital.

Good morning Bombay riders

I hope you are enjoying WSC recovery day this morning.  With luck, you've made room for one more ride this brisk Labor Day.

To echo Bill Hauda's comments from last week, please take a moment to consider attending Moving Bicycling Forward in Madison.  Whether you live in Madison or just bike through on occasion this will be an important and informative event.  Plus, we'll gather for food and conversation afterwards.

Moving Bicycling Forward in Madison

Wednesday, September 7

6:00pm

US Bank Plaza (1 S. Pinckney)

The Bike Fed is offering you another opportunity to demonstrate that bicycling is highly valued by our community. In partnership with the City of Madison, we are pleased to announce that Mayor Soglin will be joining us for an evening of celebrating bicycling in Madison.

Moving Biycling Forward in Madison will feature remarks by Mayor Soglin in addition to presentations from a variety of other community and city leaders. By joining us for this event you can expect to:

  • Hear Mayor Soglin's vision for bicycling in Madison
  • Learn about innovative bicycling infrastructure and how it may be applied in Madison
  • Understand how the city is moving bicycling forward in 2012 and beyond
  • Learn how you can get invovled and provide feedback

It's important that we show the city that bicycling is a priority by getting many bicycle supporters to turnout for this event. Plus, this will be the first time that Mayor Soglin addresses the bicycling community to share his vision for bicycling. You don't want to miss it!

After the presentation, Bike Fed invites you to join us for a FREE pizza social at the Brink Lounge at 7:30pm as part of our statewide "Fed Fest" celebration.

For more details on Moving Bicycling Forward in Madison visit the Bike Fed's website.

I hope to see you on the 7th. This is another important event during City Budget season!

As your Madison Ambassador for the Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin's Share and Be Aware campaign, I want to hear your reactions to the presentations.  I'll use your comments as plans are made for the second year of Share and Be Aware.  I know that many bikers will be enjoying the Paoli Wednesday Night Bike Ride, but with sunset at 7:20 you can still join us at the US Bank Building or The Brink after your ride.

Thank you,

Last week a woman with an amazing cycling resume walked into TheFit
and expressed interest in teaching some cycling classes for us. We are
working on expanding our schedule so the timing was perfect. She is a
triathlete who leads Bombay Cycling Club's endurance training rides. She leads
a very real (as opposed to not real) and technical class. What I am trying to
say is she is a real rider who will teach a class targeted at real riders and
those who like to train like they are real riders. Katie is open to teach two
days a week and the rides will be either at 5:30am or 5:30pm MW for 1 hour. She
will be leading a
free class later this month (the week of October 24 at one of those
times) to introduce herself and her class to potential riders. I would like to
extend an invitation to you and your cycling friends to give this class a
try.Space is limited so please let me know if you will attend and if morning or
evening classes are preferred. After all, a great class is nothing without
participants.

If you are unable to attend the meeting, or would like more information, contact David Layton at (608) 246-3821. Written comments regarding the project can be mailed to David Layton, WisDOT Project Manager, 2101 Wright Street, Madison, WI 53704. Citizens who are deaf or hard of hearing and require an interpreter may request one by contacting David Layton at least three working days prior to the meeting via the Wisconsin Telecommunications Relay System (dial 711).

Bombay Bicycle Club – Fall Meeting

Sunday, November 13, 2011

Why would someone want to bicycle over 33,500 miles through 42 different countries and over 6 different continents with few or no maps?  Ward and Jacky Budweg of Decorah, IA did just that when they sold everything they owned to spend three years (2007-2010) traveling the world on their bicycles.  They visited Europe, Africa, Central America, South America, Australia and SE Asia. The Budwegs returned with a lifetime of memories – a mix of genuine kindness and expressions of generosity interspersed with constant daily challenges.  Times weren't always friendly.

Hear more about the Budwegs' adventure at the Bombay Bicycle Club Fall meeting to be held Sunday, November 13th beginning at 5pm at Lussier Family Heritage Center, 3101 Lake Farm Road.

Dinner and beverages will be provided free of charge to club members. New members may join at the door to participate.  The meeting will include reports from current club officers and officer elections. Drawings for door prizes anda trivia contest (with prizes) will accompany updates from Bicycle Federation of WI and others.  Special thanks to beer sponsor, Ale Asylum!

This will be a good time to renew your membership for 12 full months from the date of the meeting or from the end of your current expiration date, whichever is later.

Directions to the Lussier Family Heritage Center: From the Beltline Hwy 12/18, EXIT 264 and go south on South Towne Drive. After the roundabout, continue onto Raywood Road; turn left on Moorland Road; continue on Lake Farm Road.

Hi Cindy,
I just wanted to confirm the "trivia contest (with prizes) will accompany updates from Bicycle Federation of WI" portion of the evening.  Mark stressed this would be very brief.

Here is an opportunity for you to speak out for bicycling. Not a roadie-specific issue, but important to our comrades who may chose to do this.         We at Bike Fed repealed mandatory side-path requirements in our state years ago. They should not be allowed to exist elsewhere.
