Just a note to let you all know. I've retired from teaching and going

Thank you, Graham. We are running on the same track.

Yes, some bodybuilders, weightlifters, and other fitness poeple are
definitely arrogant. And, yes, all Christian bodybuilders,
weightlifters, and other fitness people should be grateful. When we
are grateful we cannot be arrogant, because we know where our
strength comes from. When we allow the Holy Spririt to help us focus
on that, we are not ashamed of who we are, but we are not satisfied.

In the gym we wear tank tops which shows off our muscles. We're not
ashamed of what God is doing for His glory. The issue is we are
not "graven images," but people who can relate to others in this
world. God has called us to use everything we have to proclaim that
Jesus Christ died to set all men and women right with His Heavenly
Father. As far as not being satisfied, we are always working towards
being like Christ: trusting, obedient, worshipful, and all other
outward actions, showing the life of God's Son. And as God wills us
to be physically fit, we are always striving to get bigger, stronger,
a more proportioned FOR WHOSE Glory? Bodybuilding and weight-
training, especially professional, is a lifestyle. Christianity is a
lifestyle and a calling which covers everything we do in our lives by
His Spirit.

Thanks for your encouragement to me. When members post on this site
it builds everyone else up.

Your brother,
Tim

Tim, Scott,

Thanks for the insights.

I think I might have compartamentalised my life so that I haven't
seen working out as witness and worship. In reality, our whole life
is a witness- and I fall so far short so often that I find that
thought uncomfortable. I was much more comfortable with the idea of
witnessing when I used to think that it was just about being able to
present the Gospel in 3 points- all, of course, beginning with the
same letter.

The other difference is using what we have for God's glory, and
remembering that:

"Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the
victory and the majesty, for all that is in the Heavens and in the
Earth is Yours. Yours is the Kingdom, O Lord, and You are exalted as
Head over all. Both riches and honour come from You, and You rule
over all. In Your hand are power and might, and in Your hand it is to
make great and to give strength to all." (I Chron. 29:11f)

In all we do, it is God who enables us.

I will pray that I will have opportunities to speak to others. The
gym I use is at work, and it is quite a friendly one. I am sure we
all have experienced ones with the strutting peacocks preening in the
mirror, wanting everyone to see them and being like Narcissus.

And the other thing which makes us distinctive is how we use strength-
rather than the worldly way of using strength and power to self-
build, it is to be used to build up and encourage others. I am sure
many of us have encountered in gyms the sort of person who likes to
scoff at and ridicule the man who cannot do much. That is the worldy
way of behaving. For us, it is using what we have to build up others.

You are RIGHT ON guys. In everything give God the glory. As we do
that, we have a relationship with God that tends to spill out on
others. I have a workout shirt with the words "He is not moving
mountains this time, He's building them." God definitely is my
trainer, and, your right Scott, praying when your working out is
like "worship."

Relating to people at the gym is a natural part of the program. We
all have the same interest-getting stronger and fit. The difference
is the Christian has a different "Life" attitude which brings God
into our passion for weight training and body building. With that
relationship the Holy Spirit moves people into conversations or just
being friendly.

I'm, also, not ashamed of who I am in Christ and in the way I look. I
personally have future goals to compete some day. And it will not be
wanting to compete and win that will be important, but all the people
I've met and related to along the way. We are all instruments of
God's plan to spread His Gospel, and it starts by just being friendly
at the gym(and on this website).

I pray that all of you on this website would feel free to share their
heart.

I don't mean things like the body is God's temple, or we work out for
God's glory, as these are not things that non-Christians are going to
latch on to.

In part, it will be our attitude and behaviour. Wiping down the
equipment. Not preening and showing off. But I am sure there's, well,

This is something I have been thinking about for a while. When we are
working out, how do we show others that we are Christians, that there
is that distinctivenss about us?

I don't mean things like the body is God's temple, or we work out for
God's glory, as these are not things that non-Christians are going to

time to be thankful(actually, being thankful is a constant), why not
share one thing you are thankful for. We could each share during this
time between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

I'm thankful to God and His plan of salvation through Jesus Christ His
Son.

What are you thankful for? Send a post.

Tim,

This is a belated thank you for your response.

Yes, I have accepted Christ as my Saviour so that part is taken care
of. Yes, I do pray. Sometimes though, it seems as if I am just
talking into thin air, to be honest.

When I mentioned a one hour drive, that is a best-case scenario. My
mom lives with my sister about 2.5 hours away from me, so it is
usually a 5-hour round trip to do anything for mom . The only time is
is a 2-hour round-trip is when mom is staying temporarily at her
house which is an hour away from me.

Trying to reason with my sister and mom that mom belongs in a care
facility has been fruitless.

It has finally come down to my doctor putting me out on medical for
depression and some physical side-effects of all the stress I am
going through. If nothing else, I'll make myself get to the gym so I
can deal positively with all the mountains of stress in my life.

Dave

Dave, first I admire you for helping your mother. You are committed
to her needs. That is an inspiration to all of us with older parents.
I know how hard it is. Both of my parents are in their eighties and
need support.

It's not an hour drive, but thirty minutes one way takes up a lot of
my family's time. Actually, we try to arrange our visits around
errands that we normally run. If we buy groceries we do it on the
west side so we can swing by after our shopping. Usually we bring ice
cream or another treat along the way for the visit. And Dave, you and
I do it because we love them don't we. I thank God my parents were
led to a great care facility. They have an apartment now but
eventually will probably have to transfer to the nursing part of the
center.

As far as being stressed out and overwhelmed join the club. I'll pray
for you if you pray for me on THAT one! Actually, I've decided to let
most of my plants in the yard die off. Living in Phoenix you have to
water all the time. I can't keep up with everything so I decided to
let the bushes go. I'll keep the trees going. And the house is
falling apart but God told me it's just a house. As long as we have a
roof and it's semi-clean I dont' have to be a "Mr. Clean." In fact I
told my wife Susan we need to have some people over so we'll have to
clean up the house.

Finally, Dave God isn't up in the attic, the sky, or in the heavenly
realm. God is IN YOU, by His Holy Spirit. You see Christ, before He
left this earth, said His people will receive a COMFORTER! Dave, have
you accepted Christ and what He did for you by dying on the cross to
forgive you of your sins and make you right before His Heavenly
Father? If so, God has given you the Holy Spirit as a "translator"
or "go-between" with you and God. The Holy Spirit ministers to you.
you draw closer to Him and He draws closer to you.

God is with you. It's like walking through the day with a friend.
Your "Friend" (Holy Father) and you are talking to each other
constantly all day. You laugh, make jokes, possibly cry, or even get
upset and angry. It's a relationship. The next time you take the
drive to your mother understand that God, through the Holy Spirit, is
sitting in the seat next to you in your car. I have had many a
conversation with Him during my hour drive to work each day.
The more you talk, eventually He'll start talking bsck through the
Bible, or from people like me. So you see Dave God wanted me to type
this to you. I have the faith and trust to know that my response to
you might help.

And by praying for you I ask God to answer my prayer for you in your
life.

You and your family are on my list Dave.

Your brother in Christ,

Tim

Hey Guys!

I'll just spill my guts here since I am pretty much at wits'end about
my situation.

I am stressed out, overwhelmed , too busy for my own good and there is
nothing I can cut to lessen my load. The biggest thing is that mom is
in bad shape and losing ground as time passes. I do what I can for her
however anything I do for her entails a minimum 1-hour drive one way.

I have my job, a house I try to keep up single-handedly and get no help
whatsoever.

As a result of being so overwhelmed, I haven't been to the gym in
months. I am very depressed over that also!

I need help, I need balance , I need stress relief. I pray about this
all the time and it seems my prayers just hit the ceiling and then fall
to the floor.

I am asking your help as I have done all I can.

In a previous message, "Holy Gardening" talked about a leaf on a tree. Growing from a particular branch determines the leaf's development into mature, green foliage. Then, as the circle of life continues, the leaf becomes an individual, independent from the branch. The green changes into a variety of fall colors which make the leaf a unique specimen. The support twig holding the leave to the family branch weakens and finally the leaf drifts, drops, or flies off from the "parent" tree.

The leaf is still a product of the particular branch on the tree. So after all the nurturing with experiences both good and bad, the leaf goes off on its own. Sometimes the leaf comes off just as soon as it changes color. Other leaves come off at different times while others stay on their tree branch not willing to separate and become independent. Maybe the leave is weak and continues to need support from the branch. Maybe the leaf is just lying around, relaxing, on other branches. Whatever the reason the stem's hold on the branch prevents the leaf from moving on, away from the tree.  It's these leaves that will eventually wilt to their branch unless a big "wind event" in their life-cycle can help them separate, going out on their own.

But what happens when the leaves do separate? They are now ready to experience a part of their life-cycle that is both potentially amazing and destructive, with many varied experiences in between. All through the part of this life-cycle the leaf deals with situations based on who the leaf is: its type of family branch.

A leaf that comes from a family tree branch with smooth, rounded edges relates to the environment in a "go-with-the-flow" manner; bumping, sliding, rubbing. It has no rough edges that make it stubbornly "stick" to things along the way. Unfortunately these type of leaves, also, stack very well on top of each other so they at times are held down in a life of mundane existence. If an adventurous wind event takes place they either stay put in "the pile" or will only move if the others move along with it.

Unlike these smooth leaves other trees have leaves with curved "spikes" that stick out: rough, uneven edges that at times stick to things. These leaves stubbornly stick to things such as rocks, or other leaves. Is this intentional? At times it is and at other times these leaves have no control over themselves getting "stuck." It is just who they are: the type of family branch they came from. For these leaves it takes a big wind event to get them unstuck. But if and when they do get unstuck and a wind does catch them they can really soar!

Since they are built larger and stronger they have the potential for their branching out curves to be caught by the wind. Soaring in the wind, they really move forward great distances with the other leaves. And, also, because of their size, when these leaves stack with the other leaves on the ground, they become leaders when a wind comes along moving and helping to move and carry the other smaller leaves.

Smooth, spiky, or whatever their shape, leaves either move in the wind or stay put on the ground.  Whether they move or stay put depends on their make-up. It depends on their shape, size, or strength; all determined by how they were "raised" while on their family branch. If they still have a stem the leaf can get stuck easier on objects. This family "residue" weighs the leaf down.

When they are in the air their make-up, also, affects how they soar. With a stem the leaf might use it as a rudder in much the same way a kite uses a tail. This family residue can, in this case, actually help the leaf move through the air. Either way leaves either lay down in piles or move through the air in both good and bad directions.

While growing on the family branch of the tree the leaf was just a part of the family plan: and individual shape but still tied to and dependent on the group. Now the independent leaf can go places. At first it moves and soars with its strong multicolored skin. But after awhile in the world it begins to wilt towards the last part of its life-cycle: mulch.

Life has turned another course these last few weeks. Posting has been
difficult. I ended a few weeks ago with "Holy Gardening One." In the
message it talks about leaves on a tree. Today God is sharing a message
about leaves after they fall from the tree. Pray it brings new insight
into what God wants to do through you as you let Him catch you with His
wind.

Please pray for me. I'm in a life transition. Also, feel free to post
any requests you have. We are here to support each other.

Thank's Kevin for sharing. A prayer of congratulations and a prayer for a change in the son-in-law. I pray God can, by His Spirit, let the son-in-law see  Christian lives lived as he interacts with your family.

How about instrumental jazz? Music with a good fast beat. For me I like to pray between reps or sets. God is right there while I'm pumping the iron. He really gives me focus: call Him my personal trainer!

I use partials and negative as well. On decline I'll work up to 405 for 1, then go to 450 for 2-3 negatives. I use the same weight fo flat as well. Inclines I usually won;t go above 405.
