Greetings,
In the late 60's and early 70's I was a patrol officer based at
Kandrian West New Britain, Papua New Guinea
I spent a lot of time patrolling the east and west passismanau census
district also known as Asengseng.
During that time most of the inland kaulong people used long blow
guns used primarily to hunt pidgeons and hornbills.
At the time I read some articles by Anne Chowning who had done
research in this area.
Some of her research also was published in the National Geogrphic
circa 1968-70, tried but cannot find any archival records in the NG.
Do you have any knowledge of this custom, I believe that this custom
use of such type of weapons is unique to the Southern coast of WNB.
Do they still use these blowguns and has any research ever been done
to establish where this custom originated.
I think the only other usage of blowguns is in the Sarawak/Borneo
area.
I would be most interested to hear your views
Regards
Harry Topham
