Well, for those of you that don't know, I am on my way from Los Angeles. I flew
out to LA on
Monday. Megyn (my daughter) has been living there since August and has gotten a
photography job offer that she can do from Hollidaysburg, so I came out to LA to
drive home
with her.
Merry Christmas from Arizona. With the time zone it is still Christmas day
here. We are
taking the week to drive home. I should be home for the New Years Day ride,
that is not to
say I will be joining in on the ride, maybe I will bring the Hot Dogs and
Sauerkraut. (A New
Years Day must)

Merry Christmas!!!

Just wanted to send out a link to the MS movie that Kyle did for the MS society. Out of the 100 videos that were submitted Kyle's was chosen as the top movie and was redone by a professional movie crew.

The other 4 movies were done by people that have MS and happen to also work in the movie industry in some capacity.

For those of you that were there, you'll remember lots of time walking and biking around the high school. I think most of it is on the cutting room floor! If you look quickly you may just see yourself!

Here is the link for his movie on YouTube

And here is a behind the scenes link on the making of all 5 movies.

I hope to see everyone New Year's day!

I have joined the North Club in State College and have been taking the
spinning classes. I am not too familiar with the spinning classes. I
don't know how it works for losing weight. I must have went to the
wrong room at the club; because all I did was make a sweater and two
scarfs. I guess I will lose weight if I knit fast enough. At least
will be able to shift faster next season.

Fellow bikers,

If you are feeling cooped up this winter, here are some of the things going on:

Tina, the highest rated cyclist in the area, is starting spinning
classes at ProCare in Altoona. Her classes are on:
Mondays 5:30PM - 6:15PM
Tuesdays and Thursdays 6:00AM - 6:45AM
Thursdays 12:15PM-1:00PM

The running club is organizing 3-5 mile runs, about 3-4 miles on
weekdays, about 5 miles on the weekends.
It starts at Hollidaysburg YMCA on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5:30PM,
and on Saturdays usually at 8:00AM.

I don't know much about the cross country skiing schedule, but I
understand Ron, Lee, and Don are planning on going out.

I hear Skip is spinning it away at the Summit and will kick butt with
the first blossoms of the Spring... So you know...

I received this information from Bill Hoffman who is running for a LAB boardmember seat in Region 2 (our area). Bill has been involved in LAB for a long time and has also been involved in bicycle advocacy in PA. This is not an official endorsement of Bill, but is some information for you to consider for the LAB board elections.

Jim

Please publish on your listserve or distribute to your members. Thanks!

I am Bill Hoffman and I’m running for the Region 2 seat on the League of American Bicyclists Board. I’ve been a League member since 1971 and a Life Member since 1976. I’ve been heavily involved in cycling advocacy since 1972, both in New York State and in Pennsylvania, where I have lived since 1990. I was on the League Board from1974-82 and for a few months in 2001 to fill an unexpired term.

Here is a summary of the reasons I’m running again for the Board. More detail is available at www.labreform.org/2008election/

1. Whether intentionally or not, LAB as an advocacy organization has been promoting the short-sighted , selfish interests of bike facilities planners, the bike industry, and other non-related partners more than (or instead of) the interests of its own members. Some of LAB’s actions contradict its own policy statements that appear (but are buried deeply) on its website.

2. LAB does not adequately defend cyclists’ rights, some of which have been endangered as a result of its advocacy for separate facilities for cyclists.

3. LAB has become less democratic and less responsive to its members. The number of elected directors has been reduced from 12 to 7–43% of the directors are now appointed–and certain bylaws changes quietly adopted without advance notice have further eroded members’ rights.

4. LAB has not been a good steward of members’ money. Having its headquarters in Washington, DC costs too much for an organization of its present and probable future size. LAB has been running deficits frequently since moving to DC.

5. LAB’s Board doesn’t operate openly enough. Important decisions are made without advance notice to the members, and sometimes to some of the directors. The Board meeting minutes are often too sketchy for anyone who didn’t attend the meeting to have a good understanding of what took place, and there is an unreasonable delay in publishing minutes on the League’s website.

There are proposals at www.labreform.org to address each of these issues. If you want to change the culture in LAB, I am the only candidate in Region 2 who will work for you. While I will be only one vote out of 12 on the Board, I promise to work aggressively for the reforms that will make LAB a better and more responsive organization for its members. Reform-minded candidates are running for some of the other elected seats, in the hope that we will achieve a majority within several election cycles.

After you have voted, please notify me by email, giving your membership number, so I can have a check against the votes actually submitted. I will ask to be present when the votes are counted. LAB has run suspicious elections before. Since I am viewed as a pariah by the current LAB management, there is the risk that some votes for me could be "lost."

One final thought: the percentage of club members who belong to LAB is very low–often less than 10%. I believe this is because most club members feel disconnected from LAB, and don’t feel there’s any value in belonging. Some of this sentiment is justified, but I hope to effect changes that will change these members’ minds. If the "penetration" among club members were raised to only 10%, LAB would nearly double its membership.

If you have any questions you would like to discuss with me, please feel free to email me (preferred) or call (717) 560-3636. Thank you in advance for your help in restoring LAB to a member-driven organization.

I am told by my friend at Accuweather that the ride will be dry! A
little windy on the way back. He cautions about the small country
roads may not have dried out!!! So, the ride is on. The fall colors
are probably at their peak now. Should have some excellant scenery
along Penns and Pine Creeks. Bring your camera. The only problem I
see so far is HP. Bring something to clean your tires. The Amish

Thanks for your response. My friend, who rode the century with me, works at Accuweather.  He is in charge of getting us good weather!!!  I have had fun riding with the club members this year and learned a lot about rode riding.  Riding with people above your ability improves your riding skills and level.  But, I enjoyed the back road bicycling the most that club offered and the beautiful country side in Pa.  Hopefully, I can stay involved with the club next year and continue a great time with the road bicycling.

I have made up a 61 mile metric century ride for October 20th - no home
game! The ride starts in Boalsburg and winds out through the Penns
Valley area. The ride goes through Centre Hall, Spring Mills, Coburn,
Millheim and Rebersburg before returning to the Boalsburg Military
Musuem. No climbs, rolling hills to flat on rt 192. I have made up a
cue sheet and will mark the route also. You can do this ride at your
own pace - no one will be dropped. Let me know if interested - I can
provide directions to the Boalsburg Military Museum parking lot. I
will start the ride at 9:00 AM Plenty of good eateries in Boasburg
after the ride - you can get re - hydrated at Duffy's Tavern!

Lexington Hosts Successful Bike Summit

More than 200 people attended the first Lexington, Ky. Bike Summit on
September 21, including Mayor Jim Newberry and numerous members of the city
council and their staff. Opening the Summit, the League's Executive
Director Andy Clarke welcomed the emergence of a vibrant bicycling culture
and rapidly growing network of trails and bike lanes as evidence of real
progress towards the creation of a bicycle friendly culture. At the close
of the one-day event, the Mayor pledged to establish a "Go for the Gold"
task force to earn a gold-level Bicycle Friendly Community designation, and
community members agreed to create an advocacy group (tentatively called
"Bicycling the Bluegrass") to keep momentum going.

NYC to Get Physically Separated Bike Paths

Excerpted from Streets Blog

The NY Department of Transportation revealed plans for New York City's
first-ever physically-separated bike lane, or "cycle track," at a Manhattan
Community Board 4 meeting. Unlike the typical Class II on-street bike lane
in which cyclists mix with motor vehicle traffic, this new design will
create an exclusive path for bicycles between the sidewalk and parked cars.

Bicycling More Prevalent Among Wealthy

Excerpted from the UK Times

The richer people become the further they cycle, according to official
British figures overturning conventional wisdom that the bicycle is largely
a poor man's mode of transport. The richest fifth of the population cycle
on average 2½ times as far in a year as the poorest fifth. The British
Department for Transport's National Travel Survey indicates that the
poorest fifth, despite being five times less likely to have access to a
car, are very unlikely to consider cycling as a solution to their transport
needs. The London Cycling Campaign said that people on higher incomes tend
to be better educated about the health benefits of cycling and more
concerned with maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Coming up on Saturday, September 29 th, is the annual trip to Elk
County. Since I have not been riding this year I won't be joining in
on the ride. But, I am planning to camp at Sinnemahoning State Park
just a few miles up Rt 879 from the Willows where the ride starts.
As things stand now I have made reservations at Sinnemahoning St Park
for Friday and Saturday nights. Denny and I are going to the
campground Friday evening after work. If anyone would like to join
us camping I have an extra campsite reserved at this time. A friend
was going to join us but had to back out at the last minute. I
thought I would see if anyone wanted the extra campsite before I
cancel it. Also, after the ride, if the riders want to come to the
campground for supper I can cook for everyone. Whoever is going on
the ride can decide if they want to come for the meal. Just let me
know so that I can get what I need to take along.
Let me know if you are interested.

Of course this is if there is no rain.
