Hello again!

Group temperament is interesting. Our recreational driving group is
clamoring to NOT take the bitless discussion off the list (this has
historically been a VERY educational and open-minded list, even
though the focus is on non-competitive driving). The competitive
driving list has been mostly disinterested (perhaps maturing from a
rather hotly argumentative temperament in days gone by). But I am
getting a number of private posts from the competitive list from
lurkers that would like to discuss bitless but are afraid!

Perhaps I should invite anyone here who drives to join our RED
(Recreational Equine Driving List), and persuade the bitless lurkers
to join THIS list!

The disabling part of discussing bitless on the RED list is that so
few bitless drivers there can/will share their experience in
detail. What to do! :o) Don't want to deny all the good folk on
the RED list the opportunity to expand their horizons, but need a
place to go for educational resources.

I would like to ask about experiences with teaching horses to give
to the BB, particularly laterally. Does anyone favor traditional
lungeing/longlining techniques, or are Parelli/Lyons (give to the
bit/give to pressure) techniques more appropriate? I believe my
horses will benefit from a sensible re-training program before I
just hitch up and go. Neither horse has "control" or attitude
problems. They are sensitive, kind, cooperative critters
without "history". That is except for the poor fellow with the
bone spur in his mouth, and he harbors no ill will. Both horses
have good give-to-pressure reflexes (which could be improved). I
believe I could essentially drive them with a thread, but I also
know that there are lots of holes even in my conventional training.

The idea of going bitless is a great motivator to work on our
schooling and communication. Particularly the lateral work. Any
thoughts would be appreciated!

Best regards,
Barb Lee
