Nature Valley Grand Prix
       Pro/Elite Stage Race
   Pro,1,2 Men & Pro,1-3 Women
            Minnesota

National Racing Calendar - $33,000 in Prize Money

Named "Best Organized Pro/Am race" by Team 7UP's John Lieswyn

June 9 - 13, 2004
Weds - Women's Mesabi Trail Time Trial (6 miles)
Thurs am - Men's Mesabi Trail Time Trial (6 miles)
Thurs pm - Iron Range Road Race, Finish in Virginia, MN
Fri pm - Downtown Minneapolis Classic
Sat - Red Wing Road Race
   Sun - Stillwater Criterium

The ranking of the Nature Valley Grand Prix has been raised by USA Cycling
to 2.2, making it one of the top four stage races in the country.

The Women's Race is part of the Women's Prestige Cycling Series, which
also includes Redlands, the Tour de Toona and the Bermuda Grand Prix. A
field of at least 120 women riders is expected. The women's Nature Valley
GP was on the UCI calendar, but it was taken off at the request of the
riders and teams.

The Minneapolis Downtown Classic will take place on a 1.2 Km course in the
entertainment district. This race will again be partnered with the
popular Alive After 5 concert, which is held next to the course in Peavey
Plaza. In 2003, this race attracted 10,000 spectators and the energy level
was amazing. The crowd is expected to double this year since the band,
Martin Zeller, routinely sells out clubs with $10 cover charges, but the
performance will be free during the race.

The top amateur and Best Young Rider will receive a leader's jersey after
each stage. There will be an additional prize list for final GC and the
top finishers will be recognized on National television.

The Stillwater Criterium will include a Cat 2,3 race. Cat 2 riders who
miss a time cut in an earlier stage will be admitted to this race for
free.

The Wisconsin Cycling Association's 2003 cyclocross season begins this
Sunday, September 28, at Lapham Peak State Park in Delafield. Bring
your MTB or 'crosser and hit the dirt running on this fun, fast, and
undulating (fundulating?) course.

If you've never tried cyclocross, now's a great time to start.
First-time 'crossers in the Juniors, Men's C, and Women's C divisions
pay just $5 to compete (plus the cost of a USCF license, if you don't
have one).

and The Silver Brook Road Race Sunday morning on 13 July.

Times - registration will start Saturday night at or about 5:30 PM at
the start/finish line on Old Military Road - follow the signs and look
for a white van that has "Twin Port Cyclery" on it. The course is out
and back on Old Military Road - about 7 miles each way on a slightly
rolling course. Order of racers will be in order of registration. Time
trial will last until we run out of light. First racer leaves the

open for anyone who might be coming up later than that for the time

Silver Brook Road race will have registration open at the Wrenshall
Township Building on Carlton County 1 - about 2 miles north of MN State
23 in a maroon buildling. Registration will open at or about 9 AM with
the race(s) starting some time after 10 AM. Promoter and official will
determine the number of categories and laps based on the number of
racers that register and their ability. The course is a triangular
course on lightly but well paved country roads that is flat to rolling
and around 12.6 miles per lap. We will have cameras at the finish and
2 meter radio cars on the course to ensure safety and compliance for our
participants.

This is an ABR sanctioned race directed towards novice racers but open
to all who want to have a good race in an area that is simply beautiful.
If you are tired of going around in circles on a hot city pavement
seeing the same buildings umpteen times then consider coming up to the
Not Quite Duluth Classic. Enjoy the evergreens and fresh air.

Fees include insurance and ABR one day licenses for each day for non-ABR
members for Seniors and Juniors 12 or older.
Seniors $20 per race - $30 for both events.
Juniors 12-17 $10 per race - $15 for both events
Under 12 payment for insurance and ABR one day licenses for each day

For the road race: please do NOT park on Carlton County Highway 1 nor in
the township building lot which is reserved for helpers and officials.
You may park on the side road just south of the township building.
Helmet and yellow center line will be strictly enforced!!!

Prize list - just like the good old days where the race was more
important than a prize list:

2nd place - more braggin' rights.
1st place - a heap of braggin' rights.

I made the arrangements for an instructor, room and training clinic to
certify new USCF officials.

Sunday --- May 4th, 2003 --- 11:00 am
Mercy Medical Plaza --- lower level --- the Scanlon room
Mercy Hospital
500 East Market Street
Iowa City, Iowa

Parking available in the ramp across the street.

Iowa needs you. We are getting low on officials to work at the many
USCF
sanctioned bike races held here in Iowa. Every club that puts on races
should consider sending someone. or two. or more.

Who makes a good official? People with the ability to do two things at
once. If you can read and watch tv. Walk and chew gum. Yak on a cell
phone while driving and not run over anyone. Like to watch bike races.
If
you can pay attention to the race while writing down numbers. The
officials are the ones paying attention so they know what's going on
strategy wise. Parents or spouses of racers that are going to the race
anyhow. Like to race but don't have time to train anymore to be
competitive. Promoters who need something to do that other month of the
year. People who like to travel and be outdoors. Get paid to go to
races!

Who makes lousy officials? Active racers, as an official you are
usually
needed to work at all the races for the day, it doesn't work too well if
you cut out for a couple of hours to change, warm up and race. And if
you
are actively training and in shape, why would you pass up a chance to
race? If someone interrupts you while you are saying something, does it
take you 3 minutes to get back to the subject? People who can't read
their
own handwriting. People with Attention Deficit Disorder (hey, thats
me!)

What does it cost? The clinic is free thanks to the IBRA. The USCF
charges $35 per year for an officials license. And the Iowa Bicycle
Racing
Association will reimburse your annual license fee at the end of each
year
if you work just 5 races during the season.

Help save your own club money by becoming an official. Officials get
paid
some for working but they get paid $0.33 per mile to drive to and from
the
race. Having to hire officials from far away can really add up. The
pay
scale ranges from $15 per day to $150 per day for the biggest races.

How hard is it? It's not. I've see non-racers pass the test without
reading the rule book. I've see ex-racers pass the test without any
study. Once certified, you will work your way up the ranks. Officials
are
ranked just like racers, start at cat 4, upgrade with experience to cat
3,
and then cat 2. To upgrade to cat 1 you need years of experience and a
week long class. Then the next step is National Commisar and then
International Commisar. Assignments are typically made on your
experience
level so there is no getting buried over your head trying to do things
you
aren't ready for.

How to prepare. Read the USCF rule book thru once (or more if you
want). Last years' will do. You don't have to memorized rule numbers
or
anything like that. Since we don't have a velodrome in Iowa, feel free
to
skip the section on track racing for now.

What to bring to the clinic? Paper, pen/pencil and a rule book if you
have
access to one.

The USCF has the new 2003 rule book on line for download at:
http://www.usacycling.org/rulebooks/2003_uscf_rulebook.pdf
yikes, 167 pages.

I expect our next clinic will be in November that will include the
annual
review for current officials and those officials who want to upgrade as
well as any new officials.

DIRECTIONS:

From the west, Interstate 80 east to the Dubuque Street exit.
South on Dubuque Street to Jefferson Street (one way going east)
East on Jefferson about 4 blocks. You should be able to see the Mercy
parking ramp on your left.
(Market Street is a one way street going west)

From the east, take Interstate 80 to the Highway 1/Dodge Street exit.
Take Dodge Street south to Market Street
Turn right, Mercy is in about 2 blocks, ramp on the left.

Sunday --- May 4th, 2003 --- 11:00 am
Mercy Medical Plaza --- lower level --- the Scanlon room
Mercy Hospital
500 East Market Street
Iowa City, Iowa

Parking available in the ramp across the street.

Iowa needs you. We are getting low on officials to work at the many USCF
sanctioned bike races held here in Iowa.

Get paid to go to races!

Who makes lousy officials? Active racers, as an official you are usually
needed to work at all the races for the day, it doesn't work too well if
you cut out for a couple of hours to change, warm up and race. And if you
are actively training and in shape, why would you pass up a chance to
race? If someone interrupts you while you are saying something, does it
take you 3 minutes to get back to the subject? People who can't read their
own handwriting. People with Attention Deficit Disorder (hey, thats me!)

What does it cost? The clinic is free thanks to the IBRA. The USCF
charges $35 per year for an officials license. And the Iowa Bicycle Racing
Association will reimburse your annual license fee at the end of each year
if you work just 5 races during the season.

Help save your own club money by becoming an official. Officials get paid
some for working but they get paid $0.33 per mile to drive to and from the
race. Having to hire officials from far away can really add up. The pay
scale ranges from $15 per day to $150 per day for the biggest races.

How hard is it? It's not. I've see non-racers pass the test without
reading the rule book. I've see ex-racers pass the test without any
study. Once certified, you will work your way up the ranks. Officials are
ranked just like racers, start at cat 4, upgrade with experience to cat 3,
and then cat 2. To upgrade to cat 1 you need years of experience and a
week long class. Then the next step is National Commisar and then
International Commisar. Assignments are typically made on your experience
level so there is no getting buried over your head trying to do things you
aren't ready for.

How to prepare. Read the USCF rule book thru once (or more if you
want). Last years' will do. You don't have to memorized rule numbers or
anything like that. Since we don't have a velodrome in Iowa, feel free to
skip the section on track racing for now.

What to bring to the clinic? Paper, pen/pencil and a rule book if you have
access to one.

The USCF has the new 2003 rule book on line for download at:
http://www.usacycling.org/rulebooks/2003_uscf_rulebook.pdf
yikes, 167 pages.

I expect our next clinic will be in November that will include the annual
review for current officials and those officials who want to upgrade as
well as any new officials.

To Wisconsin Cycling Association Riders:

Every year brings new challenges to an organization that is run by
volunteers. The 2002 board faced many of them and with your help and
input, can prep the organization so its leaders in 2003 have a good
start. We need your help.

Will you take 5 minutes to review the 2003 Annual plan for WCA that is
posted on the WCA website (www.wicycling.org)? You'll find it under
the link to "minutes." There, you can also find the minutes from
previous meetings and discussions by the Board of Directors.

Read the information in the plan and send your comments to:
rebecca@....
The board members will compile the comments and suggestions and revise
the 2003 plan accordingly. You'll have another chance to see the plan--
and read some of your fellow riders comments--after we finish this
first round of feedback.

One other announcements:
> SAVE THE DATE: Saturday, December 7, WCA Annual Awards Dinner at
Marquette Annex. Invitations will be mailed in November.

Thank you for your help and interest in WCA. Sincerely,

Hello 24- 9ers!

I hope you are all well and that you are all having a great summer of
riding!

Registration has been flying in all summer, so the biggest 24 hour race
in the Midwest should be even bigger this year! Thank you all for
spreading the word!

This is a quick reminder that today, July 15, is the last day of the
$80 per rider pricing for the 24 Hours of 9 mile. Please be sure to get
your registration in the mail today for the lower price!

Registration forms can be downloaded at
http://www.teamsportsinc.com/249/2002/registration.htm

This is another reminder that Night Pro lighting systems will be on
hand for charging (Night Pro System only) and light rentals. Be sure
to email us if you'd like to reserve a system. Also, due to the
dishonesty of some riders last year, NiteRider will not be sending
their neutral rapid charging station this year, so all of those who use
a NiteRider system, please be sure to bring your own chargers to plug
into the walls.

Remember that camping is on a first come first served basis. Please
plan accordingly.

Friends and family of racers! Are you bored waiting around for your
riders to come in between shifts? Volunteering is a great way to pass
the time! We have a variety of jobs so please help out if you can
spare the time... tshirts and goodies await you! Please either reply
to me or contact Tracy at teccles@.... Or Call 262-549-6801 Ext 16.

The course this year will be very similar to last year's course, with
some alternate options for wet conditions. Overall it will be about a
15 mile course with great mix of singletrack and wide ski trails. The
course will be fairly flat but should offer some fun sections for the
mountain goats!

We have a few surprises this year so be sure to come up to Wausau
August 17-18 for the 4th annual 24 hours of 9 mile!

Thanks again for your time! I look forward to seeing you up there!

Best regards,
Kevin Eccles

The third annual "Not Quite Duluth Classic" time trial and road race
will take place Saturday evening June 29th at Oliver, Wisconsin using
most of the old Military Road course for the time trial. The Road race
will take place south of Wrenshall, MN on Carlton County highway 1
using the old triangular course with a newly re-paved MN 23 on Sunday
morning June 30th.

This year WiSport racers will be awarded bonus points for both events.
Our events follow the popular Bong Memorial race which precedes this on
Saturday morning near Superior, Wisconsin. This is an ABR sanctioned
race. USA Cycling racers are more than welcome to participate. As in
the past there is no prize list - just events for fun. While the event
is geared more towards citizen and lower categories it is open to all.
Our low entry fees include all insurance and surcharges.

Enjoy the great scenery and almost traffic free courses.

Check out this next great event: The Second Annual Midwest Pedro's
Festival will take place next weekend (June 28-30) at Bruce Mound near
Hatfield, Wis. (also near Black River Falls). Pedro's Fest is the best
event around, it's everything you love about mountain biking and more -
minus the racing!

Pedro's Fest will include: Trial rides for all abilities (including
women's only rides) on the Midwest's best trails (you've got to ride
these Bruce Mound trails to believe them!), camping, concerts, meeting
new people, expos, trials demos, beer, parties, Red Bull, mud bog
races, the super water slide and so much more!!!

This event is perfect for everyone - for you non-racers, it's perfect
because you get to experience a great event made for you. For you
racers out there, it's a chance to kick back and rediscover why you
love mountain biking so much - it's fun. It's also a great way to
recover your legs and spirits from a season that already seems really
long.

Onsite registrations will be accepted, so make sure to bring your
friends! Registration is open on Friday!!! More information can be

>From Bob Schwartz,

Announcing two events in the Eau Claire area:

The Tilden TT, Tilden, WI - Sat July 6th

http://www.execpc.com/~cvcc/tildentt.html

The TTT is a Wisport race with all the Wisport
categories. Entry is $15 with no late fee. We
aspire to be a monument to capitalism but since
all our sponsors crapped out on us last fall
we have to settle for an event that celebrates
the joy of racing a bicycle in a manner that
causes the individual great pain.

For an event that glorifies capitalism, please
consider the Ring Around Saturn Criterium in
Eau Claire on the following day, Sunday July 7th.

http://www.ringaroundsaturn.com/

Wisport races in the morning, followed by serious
money in in-line skate races, followed by more
serious money in USCF events later in the day.
Note that while Cat 3s race with the Cat 1/2s they
have their own prize list. Note also that there
is a prime budget and we will be shaking down
Oakwood mall tenants to further supplement this.
There is $5000 total in cash prizes.

If you use the 'Driving Directions' link on the
web page you'll get directions to the Saturn
dealership. The race is at Oakwood Mall which is
the first exit on US 53 north from the interstate.
If you don't see the mall and miss it just keep
driving because with your eyes you shouldn't be
racing anyway. The mall is pretty hard to miss.

The Saturn event has online registration with
post entry after June 30th. For more info use
the respective web page contacts.

For Immediate Release

Wisconsin-based Team Sports Events Inc. to bring Chevy Trucks National
Championship Series Mountain Bike Event to Milwaukee Area

World Champion and Olympic Racers Come to Wisconsin June 13-16, 2002

WAUKESHA, Wis. (May 29, 2002) – For the first time in Wisconsin state
history, Wisconsin-based, Team Sports Events Inc. and Alpine Valley
Resort, near Lake Geneva, Wis. will host a national championship level,
professional and amateur mountain bike event on June 13-16, 2002.

The event, round two of the Chevy Trucks National Off-Road Bicycling
Association’s (NORBA) National Championship Mountain Bike Series,
will bring world-class mountain bike racers into southeastern Wisconsin
for four days. Professional and amateur events will include cross-
country, short track, dual slalom, trials and downhill. The event will
also feature a competitive five-mile cross-country trail running race
– The Cheddar Challenge on Sunday (11:00 a.m.). With events for
riders of all levels, promoters expect to draw upwards of 2,500
athletes and 15,000 spectators.

The exciting thing about this event for Wisconsin and the WORS Series
participants is that if they have raced in a WORS event, they will be
able to be very competitve in this NORBA race when it comes to town.
The WORS series is made up of such a great group of people and riders,
that they can make a huge impact on this event and show the country
what Wisconsin and the country's largest mountain bike series is all
about.

“Bringing this Chevy Trucks NORBA National Championship Mountain Bike
Series event to Wisconsin is a great way to showcase the great cycling
and festivals our state has to offer the country and world,” said Tom
Schuler, president of Team Sports, the parent company of Team Sports
Events. “This event will bring in some very exciting racing and
festival activities that can be enjoyed by the entire family with or
without a bike.”

The Alpine Valley National Championship Series event will feature
events and activities for everyone in the family. There will be
treasure hunts, fun rides, a petting zoo, a trail running race, face
painting, popcorn, concerts, exhibitor and tech exhibits from the
bicycle industry and many other merchants. Many other activities are
in the works.

One major event that will be taking place is the Smooth as Liquid
Saturday Night Concert hosted by Trek Bicycles. The music will start
at 6:00 p.m. following the pro mountain cross events and will include
Mud Ride, The Lovelies (Ed. note - The Lovelies ROCK!), Box-o-Car and
Ward, the band lead by Grammy Award winner and former lead guitarist
for the Wallflowers - Michael Ward.

“Receiving the bid to promote this top-notch event is very exciting
for Team Sports Events, Alpine Valley Resort, the Midwest and
Wisconsin,” said Kevin Eccles, event director. “The Chevy Trucks
Nationals at Alpine Valley will give Wisconsin’s athletes, companies
and vacation destinations a chance to show what they have to offer to a
national and international audience.”

“Going to the Midwest and especially Wisconsin is something that we
have felt, as a top-level race series is very important,” said Rick
Sutton, Chevy Trucks NORBA National Championship Mountain Bike Series
director. “Wisconsin and the Midwest is home to one of the largest
mountain bike racer populations in the country and it helps make the
NCS truly, a nationwide series, with races in every region.”

Wisconsin is home to the largest mountain bike series in the country,
the Wisconsin Off-Road Series (WORS), which attracts nearly 1,000
racers during each stop on its 11-event schedule from May to October.
Team Sports Events promoted a warm-up event to the NCS, Round one of
the WORS Series at Alpine Valley, which drew nearly 1,300 athletes to
the one-day cross-country event on May 5, 2002.

We have a wonderful opportunity to bring a United States National Cycling Championship to our region if we act immediately!
